“Yesterday is gone.Tomorrow has not yet come.We have only today. Let us begin.” - Mother Teresa
Time really does fly. I still remember when this academic year started and I was writing the first article about Kyamk’s 2013-2014 Opening Ceremony in Kotka. Everything seems to just happen yesterday. And now it is already the beginning of the final period. Three quarter of the whole year has successfully passed by with many changes and reorganisations in our university. I know that all of us have been working actively and passionately to our best.
is such a special time of the year when we stand a golden chance to go back home, reunited with our beloved family and friends… I keep dreaming of my wonderful summer all the time, which somehow energises me to run and work harder for the last period. By the way, in this period, there will be many events and activities. Stay active and keep your eyes open to observe what interesting events are coming up. In this week issue, Insider brings you with the main article about the BOX. Global Service Jam 2014. Check it out to see how the Global Jam “save the World in 48 hours”. The Disney Party was also covered with a lot of beautiful pictures. And you can find an idea for cooking a new dish on the weekend, as well. Probably, it’s time for you to turn pages and enjoy reading!
I would love to just say: “Winter is over!” No longer is there any faint depressing snow fall outside. Hopefully very soon, everyday will be packed with beautiful bright sunshine. Now it is only more than 2 months left until our summer holiday. Personally, I am really looking forward to that day. I had already started counting down day by day. As for me, and some other international students living so far away from home, it

PROFILE
OILI VALTONEN
First, tell me about your profession. What are you doing here in Kasarminmäki Library? I work here as an information specialist. It means that I teach information literature and I help students and stuff with their searches. I am responsible for our e-resources and of course I have to keep up the knowledge of the e-resources all the time.
Wow and why did you choose this profession? It was in some extent coincidence. I worked as an environmental engineer, but my work didn’t last long. I was unemployed and then I got the position as an information specialist in the library of the Lappeenranta University of Technology. It was a coincidence to start this profession, but actually I like it.
What is the best thing in your work? Satisfied customers, of course!
What about life? How do you feel the coming of spring? To tell the truth, I am a little bit disappointed that we did not get any snow this winter because I like skiing but I have not had the opportunity to ski. So, now we have more light and we all seem to wake up from hibernation and begin to do our spring chores.
Do you have any interesting projects now? Yes, we have the Kaakkuri Day on March 19th. We invite all to celebrate our new library database. Where did you graduate from? Honestly, I have studied many times in my life. For the first time, I graduated from the Raahe School of Engineering. The second time was from the Lappeenranta University of Technology, so I have a master degree in the field of environmental issues. Obviously, I am not an ordinary library person. I got my library competence from the Tampere University in information studies. Actually, now I have teacher studies and I am also a student of business administration.
Give an advice to students how to be happy every day, how to smile when you want to cry. I have one thing which I use: if you can’t get what you want, you have to want what you can get. So, do not be disappointed in what you have.

DISNEY RATED-R PARTY
SPANK ME MICKEY! “Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” -Marilyn Monroe Text:Mattea Näveri, Photos:Reetta Somppi, Illustration:Mikko Lehto
What could be better than all of your cartoon dreams coming true...in a naughty way?
eat liquorice, one from each side, until there was no more and it would end with a kiss. Two girls won, and the single boy team looked extremely uncomfortable with this game, not getting even near each other’s mouths. The music continued, as dancers expectedly waited for the dance floor to be clear again.
This wonderfully imaginative theme of the party was created by our ever faithful Kupla. The idea of destroying your childhood with a little sordidness proved a whole hearted success. From garter belts to sexy stockings and balloon “swords” people put a genuine effort and brought smiles to each others faces.
Later on, there was a small competition where people voted for the best female and the best male costume. Pocahontas and Aladdin won., voted for by the clapping and whooping of the crowd.
With a pre-party at barQ the party started fairly late. Though originally, the time for the party starting was 22h, most people trickled in around midnight. It suddenly got incredibly heated and almost everyone was on the dance floor. The DJ rocked a set that is about 5-10 years old, but that made it even better as nostalgia kicked in and we all remembered our teenage years.
It was incredibly enjoyable to notice all the costumes, from sexy Snow Whites to semi naked Peter Pans. Boys and girls alike thrived as the drinks kept flowing and the music was getting louder. Kupla once more succeeded with the theme and the mood. They even added small naughty Mickey Mouse’s to straws that you can place in your drink. It seemed like there will be no end to this madness. But madness is good. Madness moves us... And move we shall!
To make things more interesting, there was a short game in the middle of the party. They chose 4 pairs, each pair having same gender people, and then made them

GLOBAL SERVICE JAM 2014
INSIDE AND OUTSIDE
THE BOX
Text&Photos Polina Racheeva
You have 48 hours to submit a project …No, not the report which you can write in an hour, my little Speedwriting and Copy-Paste Guru (put your hand to your heart and say “I did it”)! During Global Service Jam you have to come up with entirely new business idea, build a team and create a working prototype of your idea in 48 hours (not presentation, a prototype which would work). Also, you have to network with new people and…Jam around.
ment graduate Tim Vatanen also supported the brainstorming process. The secret theme was “the box” and it had to be related to some kind of service. The ideas started popping up rapidly. The most popular were the ideas with “burning box” (though it had to be dropped because of public order and morality), the emergency box (again, the censorship does not allow to disclose the entire concept) and many others (oh, again, the censorship). The group managed to think inside and outside the box. During Saturday morning two teams have appeared. Here everyone understood what it is like to develop a completely new project with high extent of uncertainty and scarce time. Already in the afternoon a group of teachers came to see the drafts of projects. Teachers were sincerely amazed by the innovativeness of all the ideas. In the evening, other jammers from France and the Netherlands got in touch with KyUAS. Dances, songs and laughter were the inseparable parts of the jam. Free food helped participants’ brains work in full volume and generate more ways to implement the project into practice. Even though the projects were different, the team worked as much together as possible. Laughter was the main source of inspiration.
The main idea of the Global Jam is “to save the world in 48 hours”. The event has been held since 2011 and this year it is the ninth Global Service Jam. Antti Viitanen, the project worker in KyUAS finds that the best outcomes of the Jam are the brainstorming, networking with other people and complete freedom of interpretation of the topic. What is more, he thinks it is an efficient way to spend one’s weekend because you have the project ready in two days and can be used for other companies. The Jam starts at the same time) in 45 different countries in 100 cities. The secret theme video is shown at around 17.30. The theme has to stay secret before “the sun goes down the shore of California”. Unaithorised use of copyrighted material and idea theft is strictly forbidden and leads to disqualification! On Friday at approximately 16.00 the entire group of Jammers got together in the project room of Paja. The design part of Kymenlaakso UAS consisted of Nikolaos Kitsoukis (DE10), Daria Nikulina and Maria Vvedenskaya from DE12, Iita Saarva, Maxim Pavlenko from Master Degree Program in Design and Laura Sigmund, an Fashion Design exchange student from Germany. The minority groups were IB11 students Sabine Suorsa (“The Big Boss”) and Polina Racheeva (“the Insiderist”) and Game Designer Ilari Kukkonen. In the beginning, the design depart-
Global Service Jams need to be held more often. They open the potential of a student, help better establishment of relationships and create the best teams, consisting of dedicated and motivated students. Another important aspect is that they create responsible attitude to projects and reach how to work in the conditions of high uncertainty and scarce time. Save the world in 48 hours? Not a science fiction anymore!

When you sit down in the cinema, knowing absolutely nothing about the movie, except that it was nominated for 10 Academy Awards but won none, then the opening credits (“Some of this actually happened.”) are quite confusing. And they still are after watching the movie. Did this really happen? Are these characters actually based on real people from the 70’s?

When business man slash con artist Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) meets the attractive and talented hustler Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) his business takes off to unexpected heights. This does not go by unnoticed by the FBI. Eager, hot-headed FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper) offers the pair a deal: if the help him to bring down corrupt politicians they will get a “get out of jail”-card. One of those politicians is mayor Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner), who turns out to be really good guy with one problem: not enough money to see the projects through that would genuinely help the population of New Jersey. While all participants carefully plan their next step, Irving’s’ wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) feels like she is not treated with the proper amount of attention she thinks she deserves and brings a number of events in motion will turn everybodies well-laid out plans upside down.

A very well-written story and having seen most of this years Oscar nominated movies, I can say that I honestly do not understand how this movie left empty-handed. The era it was set in was created so believably realistic that the unlikely events portrayed make the audience wonder just how seriously the opening title was meant.
