and team spirit. Those guys were playing not like individuals, they all were as the united whole, operated smoothly and efficiently, that eventually led them to third place. Feelings. BLESK Seminar

Text&Photos: Polina Racheeva The question of sustainable development and cooperation is becoming sharper due to depleting natural resources and rapid development of technology. However, dealing with environmental issues is very complicated and demands international effort and innovative approach. International project BLESK aiming at sustainable cooperation between Russia and South-Eastern Finland and support of innovative start ups in those countries has been carried out since the year 2011. On the 21st of February 2014, the outcomes of two year projects were presented and discussed in Metsola Campus of Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences in Kotka. It is worth describing a bit the content of the project. The project started 2011 by the initiative of Cursor Ltd Kotka-Hamina Region Development Company. The business package of the project aimed at supporting the small and medium sized enterprises (further referred as SMEs). The energy package dealt with questions of sustainable sources of energy, such as wind and bio energy. The question of waste management received a lot of attention. Throughout the project a lot of workshops and seminars had been held. One of them was Rubicon business forum between Russian and Finnish SMEs, firstly held in November 2012. The organizer of the seminar was Mr. Toomas Lybeck, the Program Manager

from Cursor Ltd. Numerous educational institutions, energy associations and business incubators from Russian and Finnish side presented their works on the seminar.

from WebReady, a business investment forum for Internet and mobile startups, told about the support of Moscow based Skolkovo Technopark, a part of Moscow School of Management Skolkovo.

The forum indicated a lot of noteworthy trends. The vital role of universities in Research and Development was emphasized. For example, Kyamk was responsible mainly for the energy part of the project (Tähkä, S, 2011). Mr. Tuomo Pimiä, the Research Engineer of Kymenlaakso UAS and his project team of Kyamk Engineering students participated in energy seminars and workshops, such as Bio Energy seminar in Kyamk (21-22.05.2013), Workshop on Wind Modeling (16.04.12) in Mäkeläkangas Wind Park and Global Wind Day energy event (June 2012, Kotka). They had tight cooperation with Russian Wind Association, Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and Cursor Ltd.They also created a pilot case on Leningrad region suitability for generating wind energy, taking Primorsk as the case city. The results, according to Mr. Tuomo Pimiä, were positive. Other participants in the workshop were Lappeenranta University of Technology and Saint-Petersburg State Polytechnical University. Eugenia Barchenko from Ingria Technopark, the Saint-Petersburg based business incubator helping the high tech start ups, mentioned the cooperation with Laurea UAS as well as Aalto University. Sergey Dutov

Secondly, being a “born global” is not anymore a phenomenon, since more companies are aiming to go international from the very establishment. Business incubators, like Ingria Technoark and WebReady offer international programs in different countries and receive support from international enterprises.

Moreover, the waste management is becoming a vital question since damps possess a lot of danger to the waters of Finnish Gulf. Saint-Petersburg State Polytechnical University Professors Suetinov, Elistratov, Maslikov and Konakov presented their researches on the use of bio gas in energy generation and waste management. As it was accurately said by Mr. Suetinov, who presented his work on liquidation of damps in Saint-Petersburg region, “It is not that we inherited the land from our ancestors, it is that we borrowed it from our descendants.” To sum up, that the implementation of the BLESK project was very successful. The name, which means “shine” in Russian, has justified itself. According to the information received from some of the participants, there are some seminars in the end of 2014.

AFTER VALENTINE’S PARTY

WILL YOU BE

MY VALENTINE ... AGAIN! “Why would you celebrate your friends and valentines only once a year when you can do it twice?”

That’s right! It has already been a while, but on the 19th of February Kupla organized a second valentine’s party. This time not in Paja but in BarQ. With live DJ set brought to us by Gerald Cicero and Aake Rihkard, pool, and surprise activities you could say that this was a good party waiting to happen. So after receiving your patch mark at the door it was time to party. Which basically resulted in sitting with your friends, your beer, interesting (to say at least) conversations and good music. After a while it was time for one of the activities, which was a game called ‘spijkerpoepen’ as we call it in the Netherlands. Which, if you would translate it directly comes down to nail pooping. Now because it is valentine this was of course done in couples. So all you need is a couple, a bottle, a nail, a piece of string, and some patience. All of it was in Finnish so I didn’t quite catch who won and what they had won, but I’m pretty sure somebody won. A new addition to the usual DJ gear in BarQ was a smoke machine, which made for cool light effects. You could say that is awesome, but that’s an understatement. I must also really compliment the DJs. Again they did a magnificent job with the music! And of course Kupla! Again you managed you create an awesome party! Thank you! Text:Tom Fekkes, Photos:Polina Racheeva

Basketball Match KOUVOT

Matt Gibson(left)

We all know that Finland is the land of ice hockey. But still, there are other sports that people are crazy about, like football (of course, who doesn’t like it) and basketball also. Before the skiing holiday, we had been invited to the match of Kouvot basketball team against their neighbor rival KTP from Kotka in the Kymenlaakson derby. The Kouvola based team seemed to dominate the first quarter, leading 2717 just after 10 minutes. But in the derby match, it was not easy at all for the team when KTP started to “fight back”. They made the game back to the starting point and even took the lead in second and third quarter and Kouvot found themselves five points behind their rival (58-63) before going to the final fourth. We have to admit that this final part of the game was truly dramatic. Whenever KTP scored, Kouvot also did the same and they even fought back stronger, led

90-87 when the time was a bit less than a minute. But KTP tied the game again with the three-point shot. The home’s side attacked again and protected their victory by Matt Gibson scoring two points at the end (92-90). This match marked Kouvot second win against Kotka team this season in the Kymenlaakso derby and everyone enjoyed the atmosphere in the stadium and was not regretting missing the hockey match between Finland and USA in Olympic Bronze Medal Game which was held at the same time. After the match, we have an informal interview with Matthew Gibson, who scored the final points for Kouvot. Congratulations on the win!And could you tell us a little bit about yourself? My name is Matt Gibson and originally from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I am 29 years old and have been playing 6 years professional

basketball. When I finish playing basketball I hope to coach and work with young kids. You used to play in French basketball league before. Why did you decide to move back to Finland and what is the difference between French league and Finnish league? I decided to return to Finland after 6 months in France for many reasons. One of my biggest reasons was to be once again with the girl of my dreams Anni Mäkitalo who is also playing basketball for Lappeenranta. In France the players are very much faster and stronger. Every team has post players who are 2,10 meters or taller. Finland has much more intelligent and fundamental type players. Many great shooters here. The style of game is a little bit slower here compared to France. But anywhere you go in any league (except NBA), basketball is pretty much the same. If you know how to play and read the game you can succeed in any level.

BBA, that programme no longer exists here. I started working here as a project worker in 2001, then I worked with technical support, until I became a webmaster.

What is it that you do here in Kyamk? I’m a web coordinator, in finnish my title is verkkopalvelukoordinaattori. I’m the administrator for www-pages and intra. I help, guide and educate people in their use and give the administration rights for the staff if needed. I also help to maintain the pages. I’m the administrator also for the zef survey, which is an electronic survey system for example students working with their thesis. I help to enter the questions and provide technical support. Now we are changing from the zef to webropol survey and working with the swap.

Why did you choose this career? When I applied for school I was interested in computers. Before I had worked as a calculator of salaries, cleaner, biller and such, but life guided me here. I like my work, it feels like my own, there’s not two days that are alike and I learn new things every day. My co-workers are also really nice. Do you find your work stressful? No, not at all. Of course sometimes when there’s a program crash I have to run from one place to another and it’s a lot of work, but I don’t stress. You don’t survive in working life if you stress too much.

Then there is tweb, the document management system that I administrate. It’s more for the staff members and it holds most of our official documents, like managements minutes. That’s a part of my work students rarely see, except when there are official decisions published.

How’s your typical day? Because all days are different, there’s no typical day for me. I might be in a meeting or attend one through internet, sometimes I have courses if there’s a new system or program coming, then I visit users and students come to see me if they have something I can help them with.

Is there any projects going on? Sure, I’m taking part in a project of creating new moodle environment that contains Kyamk and Mamk. It should be ready next autumn.

What do you do on your free time? Anything but computers! I do sports and be with my family, I might give the computer a glance at home, but that’s all.

What kind of an education do you have and how did you come to Kyamk? I have graduated from Kyamk in 2003! I’m a data processing

OMELETTE How many times have you opened a fridge and found yourself wondering what on earth

to make. Well, here is an easy recipe which uses little to make a lot!

TOOLS: a saucepan, mixer, 2 bowls, an oven

INGREDIENTS 1egg per person oil vegetables of any kind you desire preferably:onion, spinach, tomato cheese(if you want it) and any other leftover in your fridge

1. Separate the egg white and the egg yolk in two separate bowls 2. Pour oil into the saucepan, heat over low heat 3.Mix the egg white until it’s firm and fluffy, and mix the egg yolk until it’s nice and frothy 4.Fold in the egg yolk into the egg white gently, so you don’t loose the fluff of it

6.Once you can see it is about half way done through, add chopped vegetables(and anything else you desire) on top, then, place it in the oven (about 150C) and bake for about 5min, until cooked through 7.Prior to putting it in the oven, you can put some cheese on top as well,so it nicely melts in the oven while the eggs are being cooked through

5.Pour the mixture on the saucepan and let it cook slowly

Emmet is a regular happy-go-lucky guy in a regular city working as a construction worker. Unbeknown to him and the rest of the cityfolk, the evil President Buisness is hatching a wicked plan to maintain order in the world. As all masterbuilders must hide underground and flee President Businesses sterile environment,Wyldstyle emerges and leads Emmet to a destiny that will turn him into the most special piece of plastic in the Lego universe. With The LEGO movie taking us all back to those nostalgic times, where building out of plastic blocks made us feel like architects and engineers, this film strikes the hearts of adults and children alike. With animated films increasingly including adult friendly references and humour for all ages, me and my grown up friends had no shame in beign the only three in the entire film theatre. If anything, it allowed us to laugh our backsides off without disturbing others. The LEGO movie, is not another Toy Story rip off as it features a lot more than the little yellow men we are accustomed to. Keep in mind that the Lego series have acquired rights to the likes of Star Wars, Batman, Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, which in itself is enough said. This mishmash of characters come together in a predictable storyline usually associated with family films, however it doesn't make the film any less interesting, if the thought of a childrens story puts you off you can certainly appreciate the visual aspect to this film. Created with the most ridiculously good looking CGI technology, anyone will keep rubbing their eyes to remember that this is infact not a traditional stop motion adventure. The hyperrealistic scenes built entirely out of Lego pieces is outstandingly enhanced with 3D (that turns out to be the only way an animation film should be enjoyed these days), making sure that there is always something interesting to follow on screen. This super movie starring your favourite characters and actors such as Morgan Freeman and Will Ferrell is a must see and worth its hype,
