EDITORIAL

Time is running so fast! I cannot believe it but the last month of winter has already begun. And holidays will be there soon as well! What is more, this Friday we will face the St.Valentine’s Day, which in some countries is celebrated as the Day of Lovers with traditional exchange of Valentine cards. Here in Finland this day is called Ystävänpäivä (Friend’s Day). Hence it is mostly about greeting your friends and making compliments to them. In schools and universities some events are usually organised but on the whole people are not so crazy about the “amorous” component of this date. In focus of Insider this week was another interesting event – End of the World party organized by Kupla in House of Rock. What do students think about the end of the World? How it would look like? These questions are discussed in the main article of our magazine. This week you may also read about exchange trip to Puhjonranta, where exchange students both from Kouvola and Kotka spent a day participating in different indoor and outdoor activities, going to sauna and swimming in the ice-cold lake! Business students definitely will find inspiring an article about banking service Holvi, which was rated as a number 1 start up in Finland, and its co-founder Kristoffer Lawson. Another person in focus of Insider this week – the language department teacher Päivi Korhonen and her success in online teaching. Wish you a nice week and a nice chocolate bar for Valentine’s Day!

INTERVIEW

KRISTOFFER LAWSON This story is the story of one techie – as he called himself starting a banking business online. Kristoffer Lawson is the co-founder of banking service, Holvi, recently rated as the #1 startup in Finland. Over the years the company has managed to score investments, collect customers and to be the first Finnish company in Europe’s top incubator. On Thursday 6th of February, a small informal lecture was held in Paja and Kristoffer Lawson was there to share stories

Hello Kristoffer. Thank you very much for coming. First of all, how did you come upe with idea? Hello. Thank you. Well, as it often happens, the idea came from the daily life. While doing some business, we had diffuculties with dealing of finance, so my partner and I decided to set up such business, which can help companies resolve these problems.

about forming a company. For him, European banking market is a huge potential one that companies can make profit from. Holvi is basically an account that helps customers planning, running and controlling budget of different kinds of activities, from a small event to an electronic music party outdoors. We had an informal interview with him to see how he came up with the idea and what he can advise to us. Text:Victoria Zhorina / Photos: Sabine Suorsa

Do you have any competitors? Of course, as every business. But for the most part, they are traditional banks.

Your future plans? Of course, we want to develop and become more and more international, and hope that soon everyone will able to use Holvi.

What do you think is the secret of success of your set up? It is hard talking about success, because we are a new project and you’d better ask this question in 5 years. But at the moment, I think it is a high level of ambitions and a focus on the idea.

Could you advice to our readers where to find sources of inspiration? Ideas come from everyday problems. And such events, like this, help a lot.

END OF THE WORLD PARTY

ONE

APOCALYPSE PLEASE

The ultimate question: How is the world going to end? IS it going to end? Or at least how will humanity be destroyed? And also: what comes after? Zombies, machines or aliens hell bent on enslaving what is left of humanity, a reset to the stone ages or a world of awesome steampunk?

THE END IS NIGH ...and it all about stacking up aluminium pots? It was certainly a very entertaining sight, but by far not the most interesting of all competitions that were held yet.

A mix of all of those things would be fantastic - for obvious reasons - and it was quite interesting to see how everyone interpreted for themselves what they would like the end of the world to look like. Most would agree that alcohol is an important factor when facing the end.

“What were they thinking? ‘It’s an alien

DEATH, WAR, FAMINE

…were not invited to Kupla’s second student party on wednesday at the House of Rock. Instead there were quite a few people in gas masks. Indication that the apocalypse will either leave the planet a toxic waste land or will in general be quite gassy? I am not entirely sure about the implications of that particular accessory but it sure offered the chance to ask people “Are you my mummy?” a lot. They may not have understood but that didn’t make it less funny for those who did.

There were apparently some people taking the “World’s End” more serious than others and by that I mean: they actually went for golden mile. 12 beers in one evening, just like Gary King in the last part of the Cornetto trilogy with one difference: it was just one bar. This might be a good idea for future reference in the next pub crawl though.

apocalypse! Quick, grab the beer!”

“Apocalypse has come and gone. We’re just

There were none too many special effects I’m afraid, on the other hand the party batch did cause quite a bit of chuckling and/or cringing among everyone who has ever used Illustrator. grubbing in the ashes.” Samuel R. Delany, Dhalgren

Speaking of “grubbing in the ashes”, in a manner of speaking this is probably what some people felt like the morning after. At least those who stayed long enough for the lights to be turned back on.

“Don’t wake me for the end of the world unless it has very good special effects.” Roger Zelazny, Prince of Chaos

And this was the end of the world, thanks for making it a once in a life-time experience and if you were unable to attend (well I’d say it’s not the end of the world, but that would be style) see you next time for R-rated Disney.

On a brighter note, musically this was by far probably one of the best parties. From beginning to end for once there was at least 90% awesome music including the 90s music. Kudos to the DJ; please, host more of these events.

EXCHANGE STUDENT REPORT

Daytrip to Puhjonranta Last Saturday, the International Office, with the support of the International Tutors has organized a trip to Puhjonranta for exchange students both from Kouvola and Kotka. The day consisted of outdoor and indoor activities and of course the most interesting part of the day – sauna and ice swimming. The camping site is located in Puhjonranta,Valkeala.

back inside to rest and relax. At the end of the competition, even though the tutors calculated the points for each group to determine who would be the winner, every group got packs of candy and they were so tasty that everyone could not wait to try; though lunch break was right after. At 14:00, sauna was ready and the icy lake was waiting for people to dip in. Not every one dared to do it but some were having an unforgettable experiment. Carlos Eres Bosh, an exchange student from Spain where this kind of thing is not common, told us that at first he thought he could be in the lake for one minute but it was so cold that even five seconds was too long for him.

The trip began at 10:45 from the student apartment in Kuusihaankatu. After half an hour, the students arrived there, along with exchange group from Kotka. At the place, small snack with sandwiches, coffee and juice was served before every one was divided into groups to take part in different games. Because of the cold weather, the tutors decided that the groups would take turns to play inside and outside. The games included word guessing, pantomime and of course they could not miss building snowman and playing snow curling outside. We assumed that everyone would want to go out and play snow fight but we did not expect the “SnowWars” between Kouvola students and Kotka students happened that early as you could see from the pictures. Everyone was soaking wet and hungry and we came

The day ended at 18:00 and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. Despite the weather was foggy that day, brightness and cheerfulness was in the air and we all know that the trip will definitely be a memory for the exchange students during their stay here. PROFILE

are also people from nearby Mikkeli. Actually, online teaching is not that new, uploading Word or PDF files to Moodle is very traditional. In my opinion, this is not actually virtual course. I think that the best online learning is collaborative, like our language courses in Adobe Connect (AC), where we practice and interact a lot. It is a contact lesson for me. What inspired you to create a digital book? I was studying in Helsinki in Kaapelitehdas and saw a man from language department doing something alike. Then I took part in Kieppi formation where we were trained to use mobile equipment, such as mobile phones and ipads, for studying. On Verkko.ope seminars eight teachers from Mikkeli and Kymenlaakso UAS’s familiarized themselves with our school strategy, pedagogy theories and equipment evaluation. What advantages do you see in online learning? I like the idea of collaborative learning. You learn better through creating the content with the teacher, presenting it and explaining it. Often a “specialist” comes from students and guides the group, like one of my students skilled in working with MAC book. The teacher does not pour all knowledge into student. Teaching is totally different: knowledge of teachers and students is mixed. Some might disagree with me, but I think there will be no classrooms in the future anymore. We will develop contents online together while being in different places.

PÄIVI KORHONEN

Are there any other projects coming up? Next year we are planning a digital workshop in France with Spanish students and the “Game” part of our school. However, we are seeking for the school’s help in implementing the project.

Innovative teaching is penetrating to Kyamk. Two Kyamk teachers were awarded at Verkko.ope seminar 2013 dedicated to virtual learning: the winner was health care lecturer Taina Lehtonen (Jylppy campus). Awards were also issued to Sami Heikkinen from Mikkeli University of applied sciences. Päivi Korhonen, the language department teacher, grasped a lot of interest and attention with her digital book of French language. The book consists of voice and video recordings on ipad done by French language students.

Are there many universities which adopted the method? For school in Lyon the project seemed to be very innovative and unfamiliar. In Canada digital education is common. Finland has made it far to schools and even kindergartens. How can we overcome adoption barriers for virtual learning? I admit this is quite challenging. It depends on the country and their economic development. If mobile technology had been used in schools for teaching, children would have had fewer problems with behaviour and motivation.

Insider congratulates you on your success in teaching innovation. How did you get interested in the opportunity of online teaching? The starting point was in Jyväskylä where I have been learning online teaching for a year. I got interested in learning more about the use of mobile learning equipment. A lot of theory had to be turned into practice. My virtual lectures were “The Regions of France” and “European Union French”. Currently I have European Union Spanish in Virtual University of applied sciences.

Thank you for the interview and we are glad to hear more news about you!

Was the adoption of online teaching connected to the merging of Kyamk and Mikkeli UAS? Nowadays, yes. We are planning to develop online teaching further. Along with Kyamk’s Mediakasarmi and Mikkeli UAS students, there

EASY, HEALTHY FOOD Sweet potato soup With a small student budget and little time it gets very difficult to come up with good and easy things to make for yourself. So here is

Based on a true story, Philomena recounts the meeting of writer Martin Sixsmith and Philomena Lee and their journey to find her long lost son that was sold for adoption whilst Philomena was staying at a catholic convent. It seems that the award nominations are definitely overpowered with biographies this season. Adding to the list of hopeful award winners is Philomena, a warm, gentle and light hearted story focused on the relationship of two very different people that together explore the themes of faith and happiness. Steve Coogan, who along with interpreting the character of Martin Sixsmith is also the co-writer of the screenplay, makes this film a great experience to watch even with the heaviness of the subject at hand. Philomena reminds me of everything that is so fantastic about British films, they don't need all the glitz and effects of big budget films, their beautiful simplicity brings forth the true essence of the story maintaining the focus on performances rather than an elaborate production design. This film keeps the audience fixed on the wonderful actress that is Judi Dench, with her heartfelt realization of Philomina Lee, delivering such an authentic and touching view to a mothers life, even a young inexperienced person can actually relate to her situation. Coogan and Dench have great on screen chemistry that makes this film worthy of great praise as its seemingly effortless outcome works in ways that the big budget film blockbusters have a long way to even start to comprehend. A very beautiful film and a must see for everyone.
