Winter has come! Finally, this magical celebratory time has started. Some people fear of winter: cold, wind and exams. They want to go to sleep and wake up under the spring sun. But it is important when you find so much beauty around at the first month of winter. How pleasant it was to come to the university and hear the sounds of Christmas tunes. In the air there is smell of smoke from the chimneys of surrounding houses and it’s so nice to sit during a chilly evening by the fire with a cup of Christmas tea or hot chocolate. Walking around the city instead of dull leafless trees everywhere there are colored lights, paper snowflakes and snowmen in the shop windows. Stores entice shoppers by rich festive colors and inscriptions “ALE” everywhere because December is the best time to buy gifts to relatives, friends and of course to yourself. Actually, not only big markets prepare us for the upcoming holiday. Apart from them last week opened Kyamk’s Design Market and Christmas Second Hand Store. You can read about these activities and their organizations in this issue. This pre-holiday time is also great to get together with friends to cut snowflakes out of paper, have a pre-Christmas party with small gifts or cook all together something tasty traditional Christmas with the smell of cinnamon or cook something new. For example, using the recipe from this issue. So, is it possible to miss it all, to oversleep? No way! We should love winter and enjoy the life. Oh, in addition let’s not forget that all we finally saw the first snow from our windows last weekend. Despite the long dark nights everything seems bright and magic. Holidays are coming!

SECOND HAND STORE AT THE KYAMK DESIGN MARKET

In Kyamk on last Saturday 30th of November, our tutors decided to hold the Christmas Second Hand Store in which people could sell their unused stuff. This year is the second year this kind of event was held and our students were all excited about it.

Text:Bac Le, Photo:Sarah Rosenthal, Poster:Mari Viiard

The market starting from 9am to 3pm was taken place in Paja building, along with the Kyamk Design Market. Like the usual second hand store, students who wanted to sell their own stuff would pay 3e for the consignment fee and after that they could sell their things with the price they wanted. There were so many things that were brought to that day; not only clothes but also a collection of music CDs from one Finnish student and board game and kitchen stuff. However, there was a special opportunity that every student was welcomed to give the stuff for charity. Furthermore, the market was aim to be opened not only for students but also for Kouvola citizens so the organizers had gone to the city centre and Veturi shopping mall to give flyers in order to promote the market. There was also a coffee stand in the market area, which sold organic coffee so that everyone could relax after the “shopping session. In the evening of the day, there were even more and more people coming and this was a huge surprise for us. Even though it was on the weekend and the weather was not good, still people knew about the market and they had come. Everyone was happy afterwards because some could get rid of their stuff and give it to someone who needed. We all hope the Christmas Second Hand Store will be a tradition in Kyamk and it can be organized annually. 5

Kyamk design market -annual Christmas market in the Paja building-

On Saturday the Kyamk’s Paja lightend up in festive red and white to the 2nd Design Market and Joulukirppis (Christmas second hand shop). Numerous garlands were drawn between the banisters upstairs to create a cozier atmosphere for the downstairs happenings.

What was the topic for this years Christmas market? Mexican and Native American. Between 15 and 20 vendors offered their self-made products from 10 am to 3 pm. The offers included a great variety of knitted hats, beanies, headbands, scarves and mittens. You could purchase all kinds of jewelry like earrings, and rings, bracelets, necklaces, and hairpins. Some of those made from leather, others from plastic or beautifully crafted metals. Also colorful bags and hand-printed tote bags were available as well as wallets. Apart from accessories to wear, some folks offered things to embellish your home, like paintings and prints for your walls or wooden candleholders to lighten up your apartment during this dark and cold season. But maybe you already had all of your presents together. In this case you could buy unique cards to personalize it or buy a glass of jam for yourself. Text and photos: Sarah Rosenthal

The event attracted not only students but also quite a bit of people from the area who were curious enough to take a look. They would warm up with some hot glögi (mulled wine) or different kinds of coffee at the Organic Pop-Up Café. The little lounge around the café offered a great opportunity

to sit down for a moment and have a chat and some cookies before going on to another round at the market or look around the Second Kirppis.

The only downside was the fact that it was held on a weekend and a lot of students who would have wanted to attend did not have the chance to do so. Another benefitting factor would have been longer opening hours. Not so much because people like to sleep in on the weekends in general, but because there is quite a number of students that seem to suffer from lethargy and are hardly able to wake up before the sun rises over the horizon. I am sure that there would have been a lot more people attending the market if it had been open for a bit longer, though all in all it was a thrilling (after-) noon and was finally topped-off with the first proper snow this year. The reason for that could have been the wishing tree where people could leave their wishes for Christmas. Right next to the wishing tree was a small donation box. The donations will be given to the new children’s hospital in Helsinki. If you want to find out more about that visit: lastensairaala2017.fi.

Maybe this little Christmas market offered you the chance to find one or several presents for the coming festive days. And even if you did not buy anything, you may have found some inspiration to craft something yourself. In any case I hope that this will establish as an annual event in the weeks before Christmas not only for people to get their Christmas shopping done, but also to support each and everyone of those wonderful talented artists who put their learned skills into practice.

MAK

WHAT YOU NEED:

-a forest... scavenge for branches of your own choice on the ground or on the low branches of trees to cut off -a vessel, a good choice would be glass jars....the best way to do this is to simply collect the ones you use at home and wash them out when empty, in this way you are essentially using “garbage” and being eco friendly -any type of cutting tool that will cut through branches -paper, cut into small pieces -rope, for tying the paper to the tree -pens, to write the wishes with -if wanted, you can also decorate the tree with Christmas decoration, ribbons, or any kind of other decoration of your choice

INSTRUCTIONS:

Text and photos: Mattea Näveri

Once you collected your branches, you need to rinse them from dirt, then leave them to dry. When they dry out, place your vessel straight (if using multiple vessels, you need to tie them up firmly together, so they can´t tip over) then fill the vessel with water so the branches do not dry out and last longer. Start placing the branches in one by one, cutting to length that you desire, arranging in the form you prefer. Once you have arranged them all, you can add your decorations, tie some ribbons, put some Christmas lights, or any other decoration you desire. You are now free to write you wishes and tie them to the tree accordingly. This can be a lovely entertainment for guests or a simple sentiment for friends, family and yourself.

Enjoy!

PROFILE

Jere Vilo Q: Could you please introduce yourself? A:Jere Vilo, Designer-stylist, Age 21, From Helsinki

Q: About the Christmas fair...Why did you decide to organize it in the first place, last year, and then repeated it, this year? A: First I came up with the idea when I noticed Kyamk doesn’t have its own traditional Christmas fair. Besides I think it’s a nice event it’s also important for especially design students. They get to present their products and they get to experience from standing behind their own work. I also found it really interesting to figure out with the group of organizers all the things we need to focus on and what to think about when organizing events like this. It was also great to find so many others interested to have this type of event here at Kyamk. Q: Are you happy with the results and will you continue to organize the fair next year? A:Our goal is to make this an expected yearly event. Next year I will probably be on exchange but I bet there are others with the needed open mind to organize the event. Q: Is there something you would like to change, or for school to do, and would you like to have a fair not only for Christmas, but perhaps twice a year, so that Kyamk actually supports their students and their work? A:All I really hope people see the potential of this type of event which is missing from our university’s yearly agenda. There has also been discussion about a spring fair behind Paja that would turn the area into a street type of a market. Q: Is there something that you´d like to say to Kyamk students? A:I would like to see more people taking advantage of the great opportunities and unique spaces we have at Paja. It’s a cliché, but I want to live in the moment and don’t want to be regretting undone things when I’m older.

Q: What do you do in your free time when not busy with school work? A:If I’m not in Helsinki u will probably find me from school working on a personal project. I love what I do and constantly try to improve my skills. I also try to travel as often as I can.

Q: Why did you decide to study to be a designer stylist and what are your plans for after you finish your studies? A:It has always been clear for me to study fashion design, but I’m also interested in interior design and event organizing. When I heard about this program it got me interested because it combined some of my interests. My goal is to become something I call a lifestyle designer, someone who creates the visual world around a certain concept or feeling.

Malavita or Robert De Niro in on of the most stereotypical roles you can imagine. Giovanni Manzoni, played by the aforementioned Robert De Niro, is one of the many heads of the New York Mafia - or to be precise: was. He dropped out and is moving with his wife and two children from one place to another to evade the wrath of the people he rat out to the FBI. They end up in Normandy, France. A nice quiet little town, nothing special, a place where everybody could fit in, but not this family. When Maggie (Michelle Pfeiffer) want to do some grocery shopping she overhears the town folks talk about non-so-fondly about her beloved home country. I guess that might be something most people would get upset about, but most people wouldn’t blow up a shop just because they are a little upset. Meanwhile Giovanni, now Fred Blake, find an old typewriter and starts to write down his memories, something his FBI babysitter Robert (Tommy Lee Jones) does not approve of. While Fred starts to tell his story, how he ended up in the Mafia, what exactly his obligations included and why his head is suddenly worth $20mil. Everything goes smoothly for a couple of weeks. Only about a hand full of people end up in hospital, broken legs and noses, some on Freds account some on that of his manica kids Belle (Dianna Agron) and Warren (John D’Leo). Warren has established quite a nice little business dealing homework and pills and throwing punches left and right, while Belle falls in love with her tutor drama ensues. In the end though it is one puny pun that will not go unpunished… With this action packed movie Luc Besson and Martin Scorsese show us that you don’t always need a fluffy romantic subplot to make drama happen. It may not be either ones best piece of work, but it all in all it was fun to watch. Plus points for the setting in the late 90s. Payphones.
