Can you see that winter is getting stepby-step closer to Kouvola? By this time last year, the snow was falling heavily and it could be easily seen the pictures of snow or excitement when seeing the snow for the first time on many social networks such as Facebook or Instagram. This year, if those people, who are used to be exciting, are asked how they feel when the snow is coming, just imagine the fiercely desperate face of yours when you don’t have any food left and all the shops in the town are closed. So to the new students, stay excited about the snow as long as you can! Gloomy morning, dark sky and freezing weather would be the best words to describe the winter in Finland most of the time. Therefore, the issue of easing the problem that so called “Finland blue” syndrome is highly needed. For this week issue, the Insider staffs have already prepared various types of entertaining ways all for you to actually
enjoy the winter time here in Kyamk as well as in Kouvola. On Wednesday last week, the students from the IB14 team had successfully organized the “Global Business Class trade fair” in Paja all for every Kyamk-ers. They were divided into groups to represent 8 companies from different business fields, for instance, Mary Kay cosmetics, HiusTropiikki hair treatments and so forth. If you missed the event, don’t worry, you can still know what happened there in the main article. Also, you might want to check out the reviews about a music album called „Divers“ by Joanna Newsom from Roope and “The Walk” movie by Ekaterina. In addition, a piece of lemon soufflé following by a cup of hot tea brought by Hoa Truong would definitely bright up your upcoming snowy days here in Finland. Hope you all will have a great time during this winter or at least, try to survive. Please stay tuned and read Insider!

Kirsi‘s and Sara‘s Adventures in China part 2 Earlier this year in March we visited China for a teacher´s exchange at the Jinhua Polytechnic. We also spent four days in Shanghai and conducted some negotiations with a potential future partner university. We have decided to share some of our experiences with the Insider readers, so now it´s my turn to give you further insight into the Chinese food culture.
Dumplings Traditional Chinese dumplings were without any doubt one of our favourite snacks of the Jinhua food street. They come in every form and shape (bun, crescent etc.) - often steamed or fried and filled with meat (pork, beef) and veggies (steamed peas, sweetcorn, chives, and chopped carrot). Simply delicious.
Street food Our belief with Kirsi has always been that trying new foods is part of travel (perhaps even a reason to travel), so we did taste just about everything that was put on our plate/bowl. Food streets were definitely the highlight of our culinary experience. For Kirsi hard limit was seafood sold on the street, but as for me, I was eager to taste absolutely everything that was cooked, baked, steamed and fried on the street. Food streets in China are extremely popular and cheap, thus very crowded. They would most definitely not fulfil Finnish hygiene standards though, but who cares about hygiene in that cavalcade of tastes, smells and colours. The variety of food sold at the stalls is beyond imagination; you can get everything from hand-pulled noodles to crystal sugar hawthorns.
Snack-on-a-stick Skewer stands are also everywhere; vegetables, meats, chicken, bugs or basically anything you can skewer onto a stick is served. And the taste? Obviously delicious. To sum it up Food IS a reason to visit China; try all the weird looking/smelling stuff, you´ll be surprised that there is no such thing as bad-tasting food there and remember, what doesn´t kill you makes you stronger. Have synonyms for the word “delicious” ready when you are asked how the food tastes, as you do not want to repeat the “food is delicious” hundreds of times. Text: Sara Czabai | Photo: Sara Czabai

s s e n i s u B l a b o l The G and Pizza Bravo group with attractive discount coupon prizes. The participants joined the work-out sessions by trainer from FunFit as well as had their hair styled by the staffs from HiusTropiikki all for free! In addition, tasting is also one of the highlights in the event. Delicious pizza from Pizza Bravo, healthy drinks from FunFit, tasty herbal tea followed by homemade matcha cookies from the Nirvana stand. I have to say that their new product, berries tea originated from Finland, is really worth to try. Most of the people came to fair said that they were treated very carefully and completely. A tour around the event was like stopping by a travel agency to plan a camping trip having body worked out with FunFit, hair styled by HiusTropiikki, make-up done by Mary Kay, belly full with pizza, cookies, tea and then, packing suitcase from Vaitinen Ky to get ready for the trip. Finally, let’s enjoy the camping view outside and the grilled “nakki” together. Sounds great, doesn’t it?
Did you go the “Global Business Class trade fair” last Wednesday organized by the students from International Business (IB14)? If not, fortunately that you can have a flashback with us just NOW!
Text: Khue Do | Photo: Mi Nguyen
Having already mentioned in its name, the purpose of the trade fair is to give the IB14 students practical experiences of event management as well as contacting, collaborating with companies so that they can represent the companies in the trade fair to promote the products and the firm’s image among others. There were 8 companies from different business fields presented in this trade fair: Kouvolan Matkatoimisto Oy, Tentsile Finland, a camping equipment company, FunFit work-out center, Vaitinen Ky, HiusTropiikki hair treatment center, Mary Kay cosmetics, Pizza Bravo and the herbal tea company, Nirvana. Many creative and interactive demonstration methods were used during the fair in order to draw the attention and get everyone involved in these activities. The Tentsile Finland team built the tent and had a small but nice barbecue party outdoor in front of Paja building. The Mary Kay stand was really catchy since it was decorated with many black roses made by the students. Here, everyone could try the latest lipstick samples and won an up-to-20% discount from Mary Kay cosmetics. Quizzes were arranged by the students in Kouvolan Matkatoimisto Oy
As you have read IB14 had a Global Business Fair in Paja last week, but the thing is that for one day fair we had about 6 weeks of work to do before hand, the first thing we had to do was contact the company’s that we wanted to work with for the fair. Once we contacted the company’s we had to explain to them what we wanted to do, this is

5 1 0 2 r i a Trade F The thing about setting these sort of event up as a student you have the experience of the lecturers to help if you have any problems, also these sort of event help you to understand how what we are learning now in classes can be used in working life, also these sort of events are great for networking, yes I said networking, networking was around long before social networks like Facebook, twitter and the rest. And one of the best tools you can learn is how to network in person you can get a lot more information and contacts quicker than you would using social networks. I personal think that we had a great event and we should try and do more of these event again and make it twice as big more class and company involved. We all need to build our professional networks up for our future working life. So I have on tip to all students: Make sure you have a good professional network that you can user to help you grow in many ways, P.S. don’t forget to create a LinkedIn (professional social network) and start using it. Text: Richard McGrath | Photo: Mi Nguyen when business communication come in to use, we had to sell the idea to them. Once the company understood what we were doing, we had to get them to supply everything that they would like to show at the fair. In a way this is networking with companies that may lead to future opportunities for work or thesis. Yes thesis you have to start plain this early but not to early.

EXCHANGE VIEW. JE MOET HET IJZER SMEDEN ALS HET HEET IS. Greetings from the rainy Netherlands! My name is Riia and I am a second year student in KyAmk. Currently, I am in The Hague studying as an exchange student at The Hague University. Here’s a little bit about what it’s like to live and study here. I have been here for only a month but it seems like so much longer. First of all, Dutch people are really interesting. They are very similar to the Finnish – Straight forward and honest. They are more open, friendly, and not afraid to speak English. Everyone, from children to the elderly, can speak at least a few words in English which makes life so much easier for us exchange students.
rent varieties of bread. Despite this, I think that the campus is very cozy and the international aspects add extra flare to studying So you’re probably asking if I am happy that I chose to study in the Netherlands. I can easily say that it is one of the best spontaneous decisions I have ever made and have decided to extend my exchange for a full year. Let’s see if I still think the same in July. Text: Riia Järvinen | Photos: Riia Järvinen
There are all together almost 200 exchange students in the European Studies and Communication Management program with nationalities ranging from Iceland to Canada. Biggest nationality groups are Spanish, French and Italians. Unsurprisingly, I am the only Finn in our group. However, there are a few Finns on campus which makes swearing in Finnish at the university a little risky but so far I have had good timing. Our campus has three buildings and is 5 stories high with a garage for bikes. There are also restaurants on campus that to us Finns are just boring cafeterias with weird snacks, which makes me miss the real lunches that cost 2,60e. Due to this, we should be happy with the benefits from our government and stop complaining about ”small portion sizes” or that there is only three diffe-

JOANNA NEWSOM: DIVERS Genre: Indie Folk, Baroque Pop Released: October 23rd, 2015
Producer: Joanna Newsom
To be honest, I am not that familiar with Joanna Newsom’s music. I know that her 2006 album Ys was basically every music media’s album of the year and is contractually obligated to appear on every ‘Best Of’ list possible ever since; and that she mainly dabbles in baroque pop, a genre characterized by the use of harps, clavichords and other instruments that went out of fashion roughly at the same time with the black plague. Apart from those two things Newsom’s fourth studio album Divers was a complete jump into unknown waters for me. Despite Newsom’s reputation as a harpist the songs are very piano-driven; her main instrument is largely a background element. The production is lush and clean, and despite the impressive amount of different keyboards and synths no instrument drowns another out, which really showcases Newsom’s skills not only in her playing ability, but also for her writing prowess. The album is full of beautiful melodies and creative compositions that somehow manage to be overflowing and tasteful at the same time. The latter half of the album doesn’t quite match the beauty of the first half, but that’s like saying winning four millions in a lottery isn’t quite as great as winning five. However, there is one But so big that it could probably inspire Sir Mix-a-Lot to produce another hit single, and that is Newsom’s vocal style, which could nicely be described as ‘an acquired taste’. Her singing voice, while technically impressive, is so unbelievably nasal it sounds like she accidentally inhaled the ghost of Amy Winehouse up one nostril and one of Alvin’s chipmunks in the other. This is a shame, as her lyrics are absolutely delightful, full of overly complex rhymes, auxiliary alliteration and obscure references to anything from H.P. Lovecraft short stories to Victorian poetry and theories of physics. Overall the lyrics all seem to tangled around the theme of time: the opening track “Anecdotes” ponders how meaningful events fade into meaningless stories; “Sapokanikan” expands the theme to remind the listener how nothing lasts forever. “Waltz of the 101st Lightborne” is a sci-fi story about a time-travelling fleet essentially fighting their own past selves. The theme is examined from all angles and tones from witty and whimsical to downright depressing. The singing makes closer listening to the lyrics feel arduous, but rewarding; like someone scraped your face with a cheese grater, but was also considerate enough
to pay you handsomely for each individual scratch. To be fair, her vocalization fits the music, and the scraping softened towards the end; after multiple listens I found myself slowly growing accustomed to her voice. Maybe I just ran out of figurative tissue on my cheeks. Still, it is not a surprise that my least favourite track “Same Old Man” is basically only her voice accompanied by a lonely banjo. Overall Divers left me with a very positive impression. Newsom’s musical and lyrical output is so triumphant that it can’t be dampened even by her vocal delivery. Despite its shortcomings it definitely sparked an interest towards her earlier discography. I wonder if there are any instrumental releases... Text: Roope Sorvo

People ask me „Why do you risk death?”. For me, this is life. Philippe Petit This movie is a great example of following your heart and taking life entirely 100 percent. Can you go for “Thе Walk” and risk for your dream? Can you really do everything to realize something yоu believe in? Are you being YOU or are you listening, what others say? Can you imagine yourself walking on a tightrope at a height of more than 400m without any insurance? Are you afraid of heights?
