Welcome back after the Autumn break! I hope that you all had an awesome Autumn break. Have you felt fully recharged and ready for the rest of the semester yet? I believe that there will be so much fun await. I had a very good holiday in Tallinn during the Autumn break. The Old Town was absolutely magnificent. Itâ€™s a pity that I could not stay there until the Halloween and see how they decorate those Gothic buildings for the event. However, even if I had a chance to stay in Tallinn until the Halloween, I might not do so. Surprisingly, after 3 days in Tallinn, I really miss Kouvola. It seems that I am not

suitable with the hustle and bustle atmosphere after all. So, I will experience this Halloween in Kouvola and this will be my first Halloween ever since we usually do not celebrate it back in my home country. I am curious to see what the Halloween has in store for me! This issue of Insider is Halloween Special. If you have not yet known what to wear to a Halloween party or how to prepare a Halloween dish which is healthy and still yummy as hell then grab an issue and find out. Happy Halloween!

It’s that time of the year again, All Hallow’s Eve, when the fluffy commercialism of Christmas meets the schadenfreude of scaring strangers. Soon cobwebs, carved pumpkins and spooky scary skeletons will decorate every shopping mall window, and stores will be filled with eyeball-themed chocolate orbs and bat-shaped licorice. Even if folks don’t really do the whole trick-or-treat thing here in Finland, the holiday is a great excuse for a fancy dress party and a fun night out.

2. Eliminating Now that you have your list, we’re gonna eliminate some options. This is the most important step of the process, as it will inevitably set course for the rest of it. When deciding a costume, one should go with few simple criteria that the outfit should fulfill: easiness, cost-effectiveness, practicality and possibly recognizability. Of course, here you should also strike out all the ideas that are just stupid. Dressing up as a KKK clansman, a terrorist or wearing a blackface are options that might not make you the most popular guy at the party. Actually, if you think these are good ideas, you’d better forget about costumes and parties altogether and rather spend the time studying why these are not viable options. Before you go any further, think about how much effort and time you’re willing to put into a costume. Sure, being Iron Man for Halloween would be cool, but being able to replicate the CGI metal suit

However, if you go to a carnival store, the costumes tend to range somewhere between ‘used car’ and ‘rest of your life in a crippling debt’, especially if you want something that doesn’t look like it was sewn together by a 8 year old sweatshop worker with no arms. Not to mention that most costumes for women tend to be slutty versions of the likes of Snow White, Darth Vader and Donald Trump. So what to do if you don’t want to pay fortunes for apparel you’re going to use exactly this once? How does one come up with a fancy dress? Well, here are five simple steps for coming up with an astonishing attire that will definitely help you to become the life of the party!* in real life with the result actually looking like the Marvel character instead of an ungodly hybrid of a failed origami and a lego figure is simply much more work and money down the drain than it’s worth. When thinking about the costs, try to figure out what kind of items you have at your disposal right now. Dressing as the horror icon Pinhead might not be a very easy or cost-effective, but if you already own a long leather jacket and a closet full of bondage gear,

creating a very convincing and recognizable costume is suddenly not only sensible, but also recommended at that point. Practicality is something that is surprisingly easy to overlook when choosing a costume. Wearing ten layers of clothing that all require assistance of a friend upon undressing will become troublesome when one tries to go to the bathroom. And any dress or robe that you have problems walking in when sober will be doubly so on your way back from the bar.

6. Modeling While not obligatory, in most cases it’s advisable to test out your equipment before the D-Day to avoid any kind of unpleasant surprises. If you bought a costume without ever testing it, do it before the important night so you can avoid unwittingly turning your costume into Spongebob No-Pants. If you were planning to go with something that requires excessive and/or complicated make up, try it on at least partially. Paint half a face to see whether or not you actually are able to colour your face in the manner you planned or do you need assitance of an adult. If everything seems to be in order, you’re good to go! On your night out you might want to take some precautionary items with you. If you sewed anything onto your costume by yourself, you might want to have a supply of emergency safety pins at hand for when your Frankensteinesque stitches inevitably start coming off the first time you try to bend your knees. If your make up is not waterproof, keep the essentials with you so you can prevent your Vampira from turning into Heath Ledger’s Joker halfway through the evening. If you’re dressed up as a zombie or indeed, the Heath Ledger Joker, additional smudging shouldn’t be an issue. But then again, it’s not 2009 anymore, so you probably shouldn’t go as the Heath Ledger Joker.

By following the straightforward touchstones mentioned above you should be able to weed out the completely undoable and otherwise unfitting options. When you’re down to the good ones, think which one you really want to be the most/which you think is the easiest one to do/which is the cheapest/whatever it is you value the most in a costume and go with that.

3. Scavenging Once your mind is set on a costume, it’s time to acquire the gear. First one should go for the cost-effective route: borrow stuff from friends, raid your family’s closets and attics. It’s usually cheaper to take something you already have and make small adjustments rather than to buy new.

4. Hunting Not everything can be found lying in the closets of your family and friends. Some things you might actually have to buy. First it’s better to go to the more cost-effective places like flea markets. Fida, Femmatori and Salvation Army are all located in Kouvola center within a few blocks from each other. There are also few rather large places next to Lidl. The actual carnival stuff is sold by Pilailupuoti in Kuusankoski, or –4–

Can you feel the Halloween atmosphere up in the air this week? For me, definitely yes I can. I had been living in Vietnam for my whole life before so when I moved to Finland, Halloween has never been a just ordinary day anymore. Oh and by the way, it is a perfect occasion to try new make-up without fear of criticism in case you fail.

The Insider team really hopes that Halloween treats you well this year. In case there is a lack of idea for the Halloween dressup, one suggestion can be taken into consideration: Why not having a no make-up at all day, girls?

In any markets now, you can easily find pumpkins, candies, masks and anything you need for Halloween. Halloween costumes are available in many shops inside Veturi but of course, you can always make your own one of a kind outfit. Having seen all the awesome characters that appeared at the freshmen party, I am looking forward to seeing more this Halloween. PUMPKIN SOUP.

Ingredience : 1 Hokaido pumpkin 3 red onions 2 glove garlic 1,5cm ginger vegtable stock balsamico vingear 1 can of coconut milk pepper, salt, curry, sugar blender additional: Bread, oil, kress How to do it: Cut the Hokaido in 2cm cubes (no need to take the shell of with hokaido). Cut the onion, garlic and ginger. Roast the onion, garlic and ginger in a big pot with a bit of oil. But about one teaspoon of sugar to it and blend well till caramlized. Let the hokaido join. Add a bit of balsamic vinigar and let reduce. Fill up with vegtable stock till the hokaido is covered. When the hokaido is done use a blender and get everything nice and smooth. Add can of coconut milk and blend again. Use salt, paper and curry to taste. Enjoy! How to live 20 euros a month? Or STOMACH vs BUDJET. Secondly, on lunch we can make a potato garnish. Ingredients: milk, onion, ground black pepper or/and salt. Fry potato with all spices; when it is almost done add milk to make the dish soft. Thirdly, traditional toasts. Take some bread, put an egg yolk on it and fry.

Everyone tells me that it is a non-sense. But let’s do that. I will not lie to you that you can really be full through eating products that are more energetic in less portions. Imagine you eat an egg or an apple. What kills hunger? Something that is bigger. To save money we need the products, which are proteinaceous, and not perishable. Usually they have the least prices at stores. What are those? Spaghetti (0, 15 €), grains [buckwheat / ‘grecha’ in Russian (0, 85 € / kg), rice (0, 87 €/kg), oatmeal etc.], porridges, some vegetables (potato), flour. Of course, perishable products are unavoidable! Even to cook something simple dairy products are necessary. To save on meat we can buy nuts, dried fruits semi-finished products [meatballs (0, 64 €), for example].

Finally, STUDENT PIZZA. Needed: bread, sausages, ketchup / mustard, sour cream, tomatoes, potatoes (why not?), cheese, and everything you have in the fridge. Put bread on oven-tray, then add sliced sausages or meatballs, put sauce on that layer and make in oven for about 10 minutes. Then add cheese. Bon appetite! If you purchase those economic products, it is possible to spend just 20€/month on food. A lot of staff can be made on those. I do not recommend you to realize this experiment voluntarily, because it is harmful for your health.

By the way, in Finland nothing can be spent on drinks, because of the good water. That is also a good point for the ‘20€/month’ task.

What can be cooked with the stuff we have? Firstly, the easiest ones are pancakes. Nutritious and easily made food. You need milk or water, a glass of flour, one egg, and sugar if you want. Mix those and fry on pan.

Sales and Marketing sing the sales. Those competencies become very familiar to me while for Lindström Ltd at the beginning of this year.

To boost the sales of companies in Kymenlaakso area we have this autumn started a new program called Sales and Marketing here in Kouvola. We are really excited about it as it is a unique programme offered by only two other UAS in Finland. As it is not only the sales in this area but also sales abroad that need this extra boost, some of the courses for the new saleswomen & salesmen are also offered in English. Those courses are of course available also for IB students!

So how does a highly effective salesperson behave? For instance the competence making contacts means initiating contact with clients, cold calling, building networks etc. actively and by taking initiative by “breaking the ice” and making people feel comfortable. In a managerial position this same competence would mean contacting actively prospects and “breaking the ice” with middle management level even in a negative environment and making people feel comfortable and interested. Competencies are multi-level expressing progressive levels of proficiency needed at different job levels.

What is also new is that the general structure of the Sales and Marketing programme follows a career path of a typical salesperson from entry level jobs to managerial positions and centers on developing competencies needed during that journey. Competencies do not only focus on what a salesperson typically does on the job, but also describe how a highly effective worker behaves to achieve success.

COHEED AND CAMBRIA: THE COLOR BEFORE THE SUN Producer: Jay Joyce, Coheed and Cambria Genre: Progressive Rock Released: October 16, 2015 For the last twenty years Coheed and Cambria have been an oddbird in the world of progressive music: despite that their blend of progressive rock, pop punk and post-hardcore has sold hundreds of thousands of records in the U.S., the band is practically unknown outside the States. Their discography so far has told the story of Amory Wars, a science fiction storyline so elaborate and complex it makes Lost look like The Very Hungry Caterpillar. With each album the band has delved deeper and deeper both into their storyline and into the sea of prog, culminating with their previous release, the uneven and divisive 2013 double album The Afterman. It was clear that the band couldn’t carry on to the same direction without crashing and burning like an overly long, uncommon time trainwreck. Now, on their 8th studio album, the band decides to change their course so drastically one can’t help but wonder if the band wrote the whole album on opposite day: The Color Before the Sun seems to be the most accessible C&C record to date. It’s the first album that isn’t part of their saga, which is a welcome change because following the storyline spanning through across all types of media was about as easy as trying to fit your whole fist up your nostril. As a result the themes are more down-to-earth and relatable, which in turn makes the music much more emotionally loaded. While it might be much less exciting and even less inventive, it is much easier to get invested in the songs about the mundane than postmodern epics about supreme tri-mages, IRO-bot trinities and people crazy enough to name their sons Chess and Domino.

On the contrary, the the more traditional song structures have provided a clearer framework for the band to work with, allowing the band to write more coherent and focused material, free of superfluous frills and garnishes. The closing track, the masterfully crafted “Peace to the Mountain”, starts out like a folk song, growing slowly towards the magnificent finish. Both the faster, punchier tracks and the slower, calmer ballads deliver, with each track defending its place on the album. Shaking up the old formula worked for Coheed and Cambria, even if their new one is much more conventional and safe than the one they used to work with: despite the missing hooks and kinks The Color Before the Sun is not only an all-around solid, well-written and cohesive record, but also a prime example how sometimes the simplest solution might just be the best one.

Abandoning the storyline for more traditional lyrics also reflects on the band’s unique flavour of progressive rock: the ‘progressive’ part has been toned down in favour of more straightforward pop sensibilities so hard that the term is used like an obsolete and convoluted hereditary title. The first power chord of the album opener “Island” is accompanied with “Pa Da Da’s” so chipper they wouldn’t be out of place in the opening of The Smurfs. The lead single “You Got Spirit, Kid” could be just as easily a lesser known deeper cut from the discography of Fall Out Boy. However, one should not mistake straightforward-

THE MARTIAN

Genre: Science Fiction, Drama Director: Ridley Scott Starring: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kristen Wiig, Benedict Wong, Sean Bean Rating: In the year 2030, a manned expedition on Mars is cut short when a storm threatens the lives of the astronauts and forces them to evacuate ahead of schedule. Due to getting lost in the storm astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead and gets accidentally left behind on Mars. After the storm calms down, Watney finds himself stuck on the Red Planet completely by himself, with the first possibility of rescue being the next expedition on Mars, scheduled three years later. For a movie about a man stranded on a desert planet with no hope of rescue the movie is rather upbeat one: there is a lot of witty banter and comedy both among the NASA crewmembers as well as in Watney’s video logs. However, the movie does a masterful job balancing the comedic elements with the dramatic ones: Watney’s hardships on Mars are almost never treated as comedic, which helps the movie retain its tension. Watney stays relatively chipper about his situation, but thanks to Damon’s wonderful performance it never feels out of place; he seems like a person who keeps up the happy facade because he knows that otherwise he’d go crazy from the crippling loneliness. The book the film was adapted from was written by a person who knows his space technology, and it shows: there is a lot of jargon related to how the equipment and physics, but it’s all delivered in a very viewer-friendly manner that gives the impression that the aim is to actually believably explain how the mechanics work instead of just throwing technobabble at the viewer’s face, hoping that it might blind them from the most glaring inaccuracies. It’s pretty hard not to draw any parallels to 2013’s Gravity: both are stories of a lonely person’s attempts to survive in the final frontier, demonstrating just how utterly hostile to life the conditions of space are. However, where Gravity was hectic non-stop rollercoaster with no breathing room, The Martian is mainly a waiting game; the former was survival in a burning house, the latter is survival on a desert island.
