Greetings! I would like to grab this opportunity, the writing of this Editorial, that was bestowed upon me - by the neck to formally apologise to everybody who’s been reading my articles - especially the reviews of any kind - and has at some point felt them to be somewhat vexatious and anger-inducing. I am sorry, veraciously. I think my problem started back in the 90s when I first started spending copious amounts of time online and somehow missed the point at which I would have been able to get out before it was, alas, too late. Now I’m just a shell of my former self, filled up with memes, sarcasm, pop-culture references and anger. There are also some chicken jokes stored way down in

the depths of my constantly coffee-craving cerebrumbrum. But why am I telling you all this? It turns out that I don’t have a filter either and people seem to feel lambasted by my honesty. Especially when you’d assume I use sarcasm when I’m actually sincere in which case compliments can be mistaken for insults. It only emphasises that there should be more than just periods, commas, question marks and the likes. For example sinceriods and sarcastices might help on this issue. I shall do my utmost to be less outspoken in the future and to stop the back lashing to avoid confusion and angry fits. Also, have a nice autumn break, folks!

Look on our website for the response to the international week review we had in an earlier edition.

Autumn break The autumn break is coming and we are sure to have an escape plan away from Kouvola, wherever you are heading to, this article is a bunch of suggestions about the nearby places that you could have gone to. First of all I have some potential places in Finland: Turku, Lapland, Tempere and Savonlinna. Under the eyes of a foreigner, I prefer Lapland the most if it not had been for expensive costs to travel around. But if you are an exchange student who has a rare chance to wander in Finland, Lapland is the place you should go. Savonlinna is a nice place with beautiful sites, especially the ancient castle there. Turku and Tampere are located near the sea, which means if you are into beaches, those are the destinations to go. I actually had the chance to visit Turku and Tampere last May, during the time of a May Day celebration. To enjoy traveling in the atmosphere of beers, celebration, party times, music and the joy of the people around, that was the feeling of happiness.

buy alcohol with cheaper price than in Finland, it is fast to go and near Helsinki also. Tallinn has beatiful, ancient, cozy old town, where you can find bars, cool place for café time and beautifull bookstore, in short, this place will steal your heart at first night. St. Petersburg is also near, although its not a part of Europe, you can still visit and have fun for 72 hours Visa free, great choice for holiday time too. Oslo is a bit far, but it’s cheap to go by flight, the prize fluctuates around 75e. Lastly in the article, Stockholm-beautiful capital of Sweden will be mentioned. Two options when heading to Stockholm is that, either you can go by plane or ship, then visit the sites in the city, or you can buy a ticket on Viking line, 2 days, 90e/each person, you can still find better deals of course.

In case that you are not that into traveling inside Finland, there is some more options for you: St. Petersburg, Oslo, Stockholm, Tallinn. Tallinn is a promising place for the ones who want to

A not-about-Paris view of France:

Saint-Malo Talking about France, most of the people would immediately think of Paris, the lively city of light with the iconic Parisians. Have you ever heard of other places rather than Paris that is worth checking out? If not, let’s together experience a beautiful small city Saint-Malo in the west of France. With the number of around 50,000 people, the population of St. Malo is even fewer than that of Kouvola. However, during the summer time, the number can surpass 200,000. An amazing number, isn’t it? Tourists are mostly from France, England and other European countries. So which factors those make this city appealing to many people? The natural heritage in St. Malo is extremely diverse. The beach is breathtakingly beautiful; the famous old city and the ancient castle are absolutely the must-try things when visiting St. Malo. Imagine yourself one day in St. Malo is like watching the sunrise by the coast, exploring the castle in the morning, wandering around the old city, having ‘une crêpe’ for lunch in a random local restaurant and in the end of the day, walking along the Sillon dam so that you will be definitely amazed by the views of seaside as well as the old city movements during sunset. Of course, if those listed things above are impossible to finish in one day because of the tight schedule, you can always spend another couple of days here, in St. Malo. You are more than welcome by the super-friendly local French people here. One more feature that makes St. Malo special is the wall running around the old city. It explains for the old city is also called the “Walled city”. Known as a part of Brittany region, the weather in St. Malo is pretty much the same as in Ireland or in England. The city is near to the United Kingdom and it takes only more than one hour to Jersey Island by ferry. A nice thing to know is that if you come to St. Malo in May

every year, you will have a chance to see and maybe join ‘The Mont Saint-Michel Marathon’. There are up to 5,000 runners from many different nationalities participate in this international event whose starting point is Cancale, a really small city right next to St. Malo and finishing point is the Mont Saint-Michel Bay. Another interesting event is the ‘La route du rhum’ the sailing race which attracts up to one million people around the world every 4 years. The participants have to cross the Atlantic Ocean all alone to the Pointe-à-Pitre city in Guadeloupe Island, which is located in the Caribbean Sea area. The race is named after the most famous alcohol of Guadeloupe Island, rhum. When visiting a different place, local food is so far the top priority of many tourists. So, what can everyone expect from St. Malo? Crepes and its relative, galettes. Since it’s a coastal city, seafood is obviously among the specialties: lobsters, oysters and shell, etc. They may sound so ordinary to you, but believe us, with all the delightful seasonings and Saint-Malo sea-air, the moment you enjoy the food there is literally taken into the next level. St. Malo is also well-known for its biannual music festival: ‘La route du rock’. It’s held in the summer and winter. The performances are all about rockie and electronic. There are many famous British bands performing then, which attracts tourists from England. Camping, get-together with friends and strangers, going wild, living your life in music by the beautiful beach, why not? Feel the beat, by the beach! Last but not least, if you plan to visit Saint-Malo next summer, you should come and meet Maxime Cornee, an exchange student originally comes from St. Malo to get further information. He will be around here until the end of this year so hurry up. And of course, thank you, Maxime! Text: Khue Do | Photo: Maxime Cornee

First Diary Entry - A World of Pain

It all started on Monday morning in Funfit, weight, fat index and all that information for Niina (personal trainer) to plan a workout schedule for me. I knew I was unfit but am really unfit. So I have a lot of work to get the healthy and fit. When we went back on Tuesday afternoon Niina had out workout plans ready and she showed us how to use the machines and pick what weight we felt good lifting, the weights go up in 5kg increments, some of the machines look easy to use but if you use them the wrong way you will be in more pain, also we have to plan what we eat also. it should be five meals a day and not very large portions, so I will be eating more salads and high energy food. All I can say is HELP. I have an 8 week plan ahead of me. So here is a little look at what I have to do 4 times a week 2 days for each part.

It all started out so relaxed and nice. Just a little checkup on weight, body mass index, body fat index, visceral fat and muscle mass. Nothing painful unless you count the painful realisation that you are somehow alive without any muscles worth mentioning. That became even more obvious on Tuesday when we started to properly use the devices. It’s not like you feel it right after. You’re happy and relaxed but just for a few hours and you won’t be able to move. I never knew that 15kg could could do that to you especially considering my personal goal of being able to do at least one pull up without severely injuring myself. It’s going to be a long strenuous way from here on onward. Giving up is not an option though.

Sarah

Richard

Also a big thanks goes out to Niina for getting us started, giving us our workout schedules and putting us in general. Thank you.

DISCLOSURE: CARACAL Genre: Electro House/UK Garage/Synthpop Released: September 25, 2015 Producer: Disclosure During the start of the decade electronic dance music was a barren wasteland of monotony, in dire need of some brains; every refreshing oasis a weary ear found would turn out to be a Pitbull-shaped mirage. The saviour emerged in form of Disclosure: despite its unusual 6/8 time signature, their debut single “Latch” not only showed that Sam Smith’s skill set can be also used for good, but also proved out to be popular enough to become Top 40 hit in 15 different countries. The duo’s debut album Settle received universal acclaim upon its release and was showered with every accolade possible short of canonisation by the Pope. Even I thought the album was one of the best records of 2013, and the most refreshing debut in years. So their sophomore effort Caracal had alarmingly big shoes to fill from the very beginning. From the very first listen it is clear that Caracal shares a myriad of similarities with its predecessor; same stylish beats and sleek production, with a varied selection of talented guest vocalists. However, where Settle was a curious collection of wildly inventive sounds and turbulent, unpredictable beats, Caracal comes off as restrained and standardized. The album is much more focused in its sound, but also loses a lot of the charm of the previous one in the process. The tempo has been seriously cranked down; while the previous record was in many ways more fit to high speed chase scene rather than on the dance floor, Caracal seems to be made to be listened while sitting on a lounge, being so cool and chill that the band probably should have gone with a penguin instead of a lynx when choosing the animal for the album sleeve. Not that the slower tempo necessarily incapacitates the song material: one of the highest points on the album is the song “Magnets”, which sets Lorde’s vibrant vocal delivery against the backdrop of a reserved beat and cold, lifeless production, creating a juxtaposition where the two halves beautifully complete each other. Still, overall the record feels like a watered-down version of Settle, a collection of valleys without the hills.

record, echoing the tone of the first album. The second single “Omen” featured vocals from Sam Smith in an attempt to recreate the lab conditions under which the sleeper hit “Latch” was born. The singles lull the listener to the false sense of security in a way that, in hindsight provided by the full album, almost feels like false advertising. I’m not saying that Caracal is a bad album, far from it: it is still well-produced and retains the distinct sound of the duo; it’s just nowhere near the quality of the first album. It’s like if your dog suddenly learned to write, but only used its ability to write sexist messages on 4chan; while it’s still all very impressive, you can’t help but feel a tad bit disappointed.

Genre: Horror, Thriller, Comedy

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Writer: M. Night Shyamalan Starring: Olivia DeJonge, Ed Oxenbould, Deanna Dunagan, Peter McRobbie, Kathryn Hahn Rating: Two kids, Tyler and Becca visit who they think to be their grandparents to whom they didn’t have any contact up until now because they are not on speaking terms with their mother. They’re supposed to stay with them for a week while their mother is on a cruise ship with her boyfriend. The whole movie is about as shaky as its camera work which means that there is definitely some things that worked pretty well in it like the lighting (after The Last Airbender that was not to be expected from a movie not only directed but also written by M. Night Shyamalan) but also quite a few things that did not like using mental disorders as to create a horror setting and yet relying on cheap jump scares. It should be noted that the movie was shot with basically no budget. Not a big surprise though. After Lady in the Water, The Happening and The Village there are probably not a lot of people in Hollywood willing to sponsor a movie when they hear M. Night Shyamalan is the one in charge of it. This movie is not going to do him any favours on this matter either. If you feel like you’ve never seen any of the actors before you are probably right. Despite not being the biggest fan of horror movies ergo not knowing to many I’m pretty sure that you should not be tempted to break out into fits of laughter from the scenes that were more or less supposed to be the most horrifying ones of the whole movie. At least you won’t be laughing too long as the movie is only about one and a half hours long even though it feels longer. Maybe Shyamalan should stop trying to make horror movies people are gonna laugh about and actually embrace his talent to write comedies. Text: Sarah Rosenthal – 10 –
