WHAT SHOULD WE LEARN,
REALLY? By: Jagat Kunwar
Each day at school, we are engaged in learning and teaching. As our sole occupation in this establishment, to ask “what is important to learn”, should be a norm. Is learning collecting a “bagful” of information every day? Is it passing standardized tests to acquire a certain social legitimacy as knowledgeable and sellable in the job market? What is it? In this information age, there is no dearth of information. It is rather important to learn to use analytical tools that can be applied in multiple situations to filter crucial information from the “noise”. As we grow older we also tend to specialize
more. This is the right stage to explore interrelationships between different functional disciplines so that we are able to communicate later with other people living in their own “silos”. Eventually, both in professional or academic life, we need to specialize and then we no longer have that luxury. Proponents of ideas we learn everyday are also “people” like you and me; and most of the time what we construe as knowledge are a product of time and social acceptance. One should then always dare to be “critical” rather than be “spoon-fed” with knowledge. Later on, in both professional and academic life; higher
the margin of error, higher the consequences; but here at school we are shielded to dare to experiment with new ideas. One should then be constantly experimenting with frameworks that we are taught in practical situations to learn from their successes and failures. Ultimately all learning should lead to enduring changes in behavior. It is often not “what we know” that is consequential but “who we are” and “who we know”. School life is a fertile ground not only to gain substantive knowledge but also to foster intellectual, behavioral and social growth.
BOOK MARKETING Text by: Dr. Ilkka Virolainen | Photo by: Timo Turunen that book marketing is done well.
Creating interesting name and book cover If the name of the book is not interesting person does not even start to look further the book. Also book cover influences buying decision. Book cover creates certain kind of image about the book and that is how it influences if person puts the book back to shelves in book store or if she buys the book. Many people want to write a book - and several actually do that. But important is that there are actually readers for the book. If people are not aware of the book it does not help that much even though it is really good one. So it is important
Cooperation with media It is important to contact different media and tell them about the book. That is how they can interview the writer and write about the book. It is also good to think in innovative ways what
tv-programs and radio-programs might be interested in the book´s topics. Those are key things to increase awareness of the book.
Different ways to increase awareness Some other ways how to increase the awareness of the book is to organize events where writer speaks about the book. Places for these can be book exhibitions, book stores and also exhibitions and events related to book´s topic. Nowadays it is good also to use social media like facebook, youtube, and write blog about the book´s topics. One way to reach target group and increase their interest towards the book is to organize webinars about the book.

PROFILE
NABIN GHIMIRE 4th year IB Student By: Frank van de Voorde What are you passionate about? I really love to meet new people and make new friends. That is my real passion but I love to play sports as well sometimes. For instance I play cricket. Cricket is popular in Nepal because India is near us and it is a really big sport there but we are not so good at it. Why did you decide to come to Finland? To be honest I wasn’t planning on coming to Finland to study. I applied for Austria but it was quite expensive and I didn’t get in there. I lost a year of study in Nepal and so I decided to come here to Finland. What made you choose for KyAMK? Well I don’t know. When I was back in Nepal I didn’t know that KyAMK is that much farther away and that the train from Helsinki to Kouvola costs that much money. Kouvola is quite close to Helsinki and so I never thought the train would cost 25-35 Euro but I love Kouvola and Kymenlaakso so much that it doesn’t matter. Why do you love Kouvola so much? Because I have lots of good memories of this area. I have been here for over three years now and I love the people here. Kouvola and Kymenlaakso are good! What do you like about Finland in general? Actually what I don’t like is some stupid drunk people but I love Finns because they are honest people. Just sometimes stupid people annoy me. I think Finland is great in general.
You already said you don’t like stupid drunks but what else don’t you like about Finland? The language and the fact that Finns aren’t too social. For instance in Nepal when you don’t have money for one month you can survive easily because we are a social society. We don’t need any money to survive even for six months. You will get food and help from others.
Who is Nabin Ghimire? Nabin Ghimire is a fourth year International Business student from Nepal. He has already finished his thesis and is now dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s. He is gathering some more credits from optional courses while trying to pass his final Finnish course. He will graduate coming summer but his stay in Finland does most likely not end there!
Did you have any problems finding work in Finland? Well now I have actually two to three jobs but it was hard in the beginning. There was just no opportunity because I didn’t speak Finnish. Have you had any other difficulties in Finland besides finding a job? I have had one incident when I was in Tampere to meet my friends and that hurt me so much. There was one old lady inside the market. She saw me when I entered because it was really cold outside and she said “Get out of Finland” to me. Seriously. I asked her “What? Why? What do you think?” She replied “I don’t know. Get out.” Why should I get out of Finland? I told her, “I don’t take your money. I don’t take anything from the Finnish government. I am a student here.” It felt so bad. That racism hurt. I talked to Mi Nguyen last week and she wanted to ask you what your future plans are? Once I am graduated I want to start my own business in Finland. I already have some good ideas which I will keep to myself for now.

COVER STORY
GASELLIT Interview By: Roope Sorvo
Gasellit is rap group from Helsinki that mixes together the lyricism of underground rap with catchy pop hooks. By the time they released their third album Seis in last October they’ve already ensured their place among the mainstays of the genre in Finland. Minutes before their Bar Q gig Gasellit members Päkä and Hätä-Miikka joined Insider crew for a short interview. This is the first time Kupla has arranged an event like this. Have you done this kind of collaborative gig with a student organization before? Hätä-Miikka: Actually, we have done that surprisingly often, so it’s not our first rodeo. If it was, we’d be much more nervous. But it’s our first time in Kouvola! Päkä: We’ve been performing at several of these student After Ski things in addition to more regular student parties. But they’re always rewarding because the audience is never rigid.
So where does your name come from? Why Gasellit (“Gazelles”)? HM: The point behind it was to make it sound like a name of a sports team. So that explains the logo derived from the Oakland Raiders’ one. P: Yeah, the band kind of was our ‘team’. HM: When we formed the band we were playing around with the idea... And Gazelle was kind of your totem animal. HM: It reflects our nature. We’re pretty tame and docile, but we can also use our horns every now and then. P: I don’t know, it sounded good back then. It’s memorably stupid. It sticks with you when you hear about a band that calls themselves gazelles. HM: Plus it sort of sounds like “Gangsters”. Well, you certainly succeeded in your goal, it does sound like a sports team. HM: There’s not actually that many sports teams that would call themselves “Gasellit”. It’s just exotic enough. Things would be different if we had decided to call ourselves say, bears or tigers.
P: In Vantaa there actually is a girls’ football team called VJS Gasellit. Have you ever accidentally received their mail or vice versa? HM: Well, some of the messages we get are pretty weird and sometimes hard to decipher, so we can never be sure. Do you have any big musical influences? Or what inspired you to make music? HM: It’s not easy to start making a list of those, especially when you’re part of the group. With four guys there are four different tastes. Of course we share a few all-time favourites, Dave Lindholm, ASAP Rocky, Jontti & Shaka and Ruudolf, for example. Many of those names were kind of role models for us back when we started. P: But it’s hard to say if there’s any clear idols that would directly have affect on our sound. HM: And we consume a lot of music, across the whole spectrum. Any recent favourites? P: In the span of the last year or so Skepta and Jamie xx were the things I personally got most excited about.
COVER STORY
HM: From Finnish artists I’d say Hopeajärvi and Teksti-TV 666. And the bands from Kouvola, Pää Kii and Kakka-Hätä 77. Those have been the favourites we all share. Or well, not all. P: The favourites two of us share and the others hate. So do you have anybody specific that you’d like to work with in the future? HM: For most parts we have already collaborated with many people we have wanted to work with. P: I think out of all the people we’ve asked to work with us only one has said no. But the thing with collaborations is that we don’t start by thinking “it’d be cool to work with person X”, but rather so that we have a song draft that we feel requires a touch of a special person. It’s more about what that person can bring to the table rather than collaborating for the sake of collaborating. HM: Usually when you collaborate with someone, it turns out to be so much fun that you’d just want to do it again instantly. P: Everyone has their own approach to the process. It’s cool to see how other people do that, and it opens your eyes to all sorts of revelations about
making music. HM: I also think all our collaborating efforts have been fruitful. P: That’s something I fear every time we ask someone to work with us. The awkward ordeal of having to tell someone that they were horrible without completely burning any bridges. Fortunately we’ve never had to do that. So what about your non-musical influences? HM: Well, we try to be conscious outside of music too, but I don’t really think there had been a book, movie or anything else that would’ve touched us in a way that we’d have consciously bleed into the stuff we do with Gasellit. P: It might be that we don’t really do music that would be very cinematic in its sound or very story-based in its lyrics. I mean, sometimes they are stories, but they originate from our own lives, our if not ours, then the lives of someone we know. The stories you hear while sitting in the corner table of a cafeteria, not the stories you see on a silver screen. HM: Speaking of movies, we were on a gig in Joensuu last autumn, and we had arrived ahead of the schedule for once, so we went to see the
6
N.W.A. movie Straight Outta Compton with the band. It was quite an experience, since even if we’re from different playgrounds there’s a certain kind of ubiquity about rap music, and making music in general. The theatre wasn’t even all that full so we could comfortably keep commenting on the similarities. I identified with the guys of the movie. P: I did not. HM: But it was kind of nice to see how simple and drama-free their journey was, given all the violence and grittiness associated with the genre at the time. It felt like they had it pretty easy. But it also made me think what kind of a movie our own journey would make. So have you already thought about the casting? P: Yeah, we were playing with that idea. Though I think all the people we chose were already in their 50s, so in twenty years from now they might be a bit overage to play us. HM: We were thinking about Nicholas Cage and Danny DeVito. I believe the hardest part would be to learn to speak Finnish, though. But they’re professionals, I’m sure they can handle it.

They say that smell is the strongest sense. In this international best-seller PERFUME, Patrick Süsskind provokes a terrifying examination of what happens when one man’s extravagance in his greatest passion—his sense of smell—leads to murder. On the surface, this book is creepy, really creepy. But if you dig deeper you will see that this is a celebration of beauty and a man’s struggle to find happiness in the middle of being miserable, poor and unwanted.
Some people described TONGUE as “a taste of a heartbreak”. This statement is so true by all means. Turning from page to page, you will taste the sorrow of Jung Ji-won, the main character. She was a wellknown young chef mourning the loss of her 7-year relationship. She lost her desire to cook, to eat, and even her sense of taste. This book focused deeply on the flow of emotion and I was so wrong when I assume it as a normal “love novel”. Tongue is strange, passionate and haunting…

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • •
200g chicken breast 100g onion 200g cucumber 100g paprika 30g garlic 3 tablespoons vinegar 2 tablespoons fish sauce 1 tablespoon sugar Salt 50ml water
Let’s make it! The weather is getting warmer everyday and more important, there are finally days with sunshine in Kouvola. Yayyyy! Okay, that was a little bit too much. Therefore, how about a simple, healthy and delightful chicken salad that would keep you happy all day long?
First, boil the chicken breast and then shred them. Chop the onion and put some salt to reduce the intense flavor of raw onion. After 10 minutes, rinse it with water to remove the salt. Slice the cucumber and paprika in thin shapes also. Mix the fish sauce, vinegar, sugar, water and a pint of salt together. Then mix the sauce that we have already made with chopped onion and cu-

Finally, place the salad to the plate and the dish is ready to serve! P/s: You can add the chopped cilantro to the top of the dish for a better look as well as flavor. Good luck and see you in the next issues for more stunning dishes.

THE 1975
I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It By: Roope Sorvo ends within Top 40, but also able to hold on to a certain hipster aesthetic to appeal to the indie kids that are ‘too cool’ to listen to anything remotely popular. After its release their recent They must be doing something right, right?
Genre Indie Rock/Electropop Producer Mike Crossey George Daniel Matthew Healy Released February 26, 2016 Rating I can’t say I really enjoyed the debut album of The 1975. Apart from the catchy “Heart Out”, the self-titled debut sounded like all the cliches of bland, bloated 2010s indietronica rolled conveniently into one big, infuriating ball. Their sound seemed a bit too clean and calculated, and combined with the lyrics about love, sex and social anxieties they just struck me as One Direction for people over 14. Not to mention that the band sounds way too eighties to be named The 1975. However, they seem to have found the sweet spot where they’re not only mainstream enough for the audiences whose comfort zone starts and
Spotify
At first it certainly seems so: the first half of their sophomore album I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It, strong contender for the ‘Creepiest Album Name of the Year’ award, while not exactly stellar, offers some great tracks. Unfortunately, roughly halfway through the record takes a nosedive in terms of quality. Apart from unashamedly catchy “The Sound” the second half of the album is largely forgettable. It feels like the band at some point ran out of ideas and started rehashing the same drafts they already used on the first half, only with weaker results. For the final few tracks they just give up and dish out some acoustic ballads obviously meant for bonus tracks for a Deluxe Edition but probably left in by a delusional executive. And while the band has gotten a lot less shallow with its eighties pastiche sound, their edginess and sensitivity still feels largely calculated. The 1975’s sophomore effort contains a couple of really solid pop hits, a few successful experiments, and a whole lot of superfluous fluff. With some heavy trimming this would’ve been a tight EP. Now I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It just feels exactly as unnecessary and overly long as its title.

MOVIE REVIEW
HAIL, CAESAR! Lights. Camera. Abduction. By: Roope Sorvo studio receives a ransom letter signed by “The Future”. This sets off a series of absurd events in the truest Coen Brothers fashion.
Genre Comedy, Mystery Director The Coen Brothers Starring Josh Brolin George Clooney Alden Ehrenreich Scarlett Johansson Tilda Swinton Rating
Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) has a demanding job as a Hollywood fixer: from day to day, he goes around striking deals, covering up scandals and herding actors of Capitol Pictures. His hectic day becomes more dire than usual when Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), the star of the studio’s newest blockbuster Hail, Caesar!, disappears from the set. Soon enough the
A period piece set in the 1950s, the movie is a love letter for the Golden Age of Hollywood and the film industry in general, featuring numerous nods, homages and in-jokes to the films and stars of the era. Many of the scenes seem to exist solely so that the Coens could shoot spectacles in extinct Hollywood genres that they’d otherwise never had the chance to make. While this makes for a collection of very entertaining sketches and luxurious set pieces, it doesn’t quite form a plot structure that would carry through the whole film. This is somewhat remedied by the fact that each individual scene is tremendously written and acted, with the film’s star-studded ensemble cast giving all-around great performances. A special mention goes to Alden Ehrenreich, a relative newcomer among the more well-known names, whose performance as Hobie Doyle, an awkward Western star trying to make a breakthrough to other genres, is one of the best in the film. It’s also clear a lot of love and effort was poured into the films within the film, and despite their tangential relation to the plot at hand, they are always a pleasure to watch. Unfortunately Hail, Caesar! stumbles into the same pitfall as several other Coen Brother films: the narrative concept behind the movie, while interesting, doesn’t successfully turn into a coherent story. However, there are enough laughs and eye candy to keep you entertained from beginning to end.
