HEI! The definite highlight of this issue is the Finnish alternative rock band Lapko. The band is widely popular in Finland and recently had a gig in Bar Downtown. SERVICE DESIGN In a Big Scale By: Ulla Puustelli
So what is service design?
Service design has been a buzz word already for a while. Service companies as well as companies where service is only a part of their offering have put a customer under a magnifying class. Customer’s every step is analyzed thorough out the customer journey in order to design better experiences, processes and interactions. Understanding customer’s motivations and goals and linking them to those of companies are fundamental principles in business. Nevertheless, with unprecedented choice in the digital world, customers are demanding more than just a great product. They want experiences tailored to their wants.
What is KYUAS doing with service design? In the autumn 2016, the first group of business students studying service design begin their studies. The new programme is called myynnin ja markkinoinnin koulutus, palvelumuotoilun erikoistuminen, Sales and Marketing with specialization in Service Design, taught in Finnish. Part of the studies are carried out together with design students. Combining business and design students together offers new and more extensive possibilities for innovative projects.
But what is Service design in a Big Scale? As a KYUAS student you are eligible to apply for a programme where you will be going through a customer journey, analyzing highs and low of it and at the end producing promotional material. However, this time we are not just talking about companies, but about an entire ancient village located in China. The village is part of a project which includes developing eco-tourism in three different villages. All this had already begun a year ago in the first village. Now is the second village being developed with the help of foreign visitors who are staying in the area for three weeks. The customer journey starts from Shanghai Airport, where you fly on your own expense. After that, expenses are covered by the programme with full days of activities. If you want to know more about this once in a lifetime experience, please contact: ulla.puustelli@kyamk.fi. Application time is until end April and you don’t need to speak Chinese!

PROFILE
JARI VARIS New Principal Lecturer By: Frank van de Voorde What courses teaching?
will
you
be
What do you think are the difficulties teaching students from other cultures like Russian or Vietnamese students?
I will start by teaching Finnish students from Myynti ja Markkinointi (Sales and Marketing) and also some master degree courses. I will also be teaching International Marketing to Different Trade Areas during the autumn semester and after that also courses related to internationalization. More or less that area is what I will be teaching. There may also be courses I teach together with somebody else. Are you currently teaching or working anywhere else besides KyAMK? No, just here now. Fulltime. What are your hobbies? I have long and broad background in different sports. I have been doing sports all my life basically. Nowadays it is more or less about keeping fit; gym, jogging and some rink bandy and also ice hockey sometimes. For the last two summers I have also played golf. I also enjoy reading and movies. Sometimes I have had some nature related hobbies also like bird watching and being in the forest and so on. However, now that I started golf it is more or less that during the summer. In your opinion what are the biggest challenges as a lecturer? The thing is, it is sometimes very difficult when you teach for instance international marketing to students who possibly haven’t been working and don’t have any touch to the topic
Who is Jari Varis? Jari Varis is the new principal lecturer. He lives in Lappeenranta where he started his basic studies in 1983. Jari has a vast amount of working experience, particularly in marketing and especially in business-to-business marketing and the marketing of industrial goods. He also worked for the Lappeenranta University of Technology and the South Karelian polytechnic and he will tell you a lot more about himself and his experiences in our next issue! to get a connection there with the mind-set of the students. Of course you can learn the terms and the basic ideas, and you can study for the exam but you don’t really understand what you are talking about. That is why I think these real life connections are valuable, and I will talk about that more in the article I am writing (will be published in Insider issue 19).
Russian and Chinese students I have taught before but Vietnamese is new to me, and I am looking forward to it. I know there are going to be general cultural issues as well as different attitudes towards studying. There will be issues I need to think about when there are students with different cultural backgrounds especially regarding group work and possibly some issues related to companies. For grading some form of self-assessment combined with an exam maybe. What is your style of teaching? I haven’t been teaching for some time now but I hope it is quite relaxed and not too stiff in that sense. I try to also combine theory and practice. That is a goal for me. We will see how it turns out! I hope to develop that. What advice do you have for the students? Keep on developing yourself and always learn more. In school you only learn a basic framework and theory. That is not enough when you are working in a company. You need to keep on developing your skills and knowledge. Any final words? Be active and be open and learn as much as you can but also remember that studying is a great time and you should enjoy it!

LAPKO
Interview with the Band
@ Bar Downtown
Text by: Roope Sorvo | Pictures by: Richard McGrath, Sarah Rosenthal Lapko is unquestionably one of the biggest bands in Finland in this millennium. Known for their sexually charged shows, Lapko plays post-hardcore-influenced alternative rock somewhere between anxiety of Placebo and the intensity of NOFX, with slightly Tool-esque prog elements thrown into the mix. Before their show at Bar Downtown singer Ville Malja and guitarist Janne Heikkonen joined Insider crew for a short interview. Thank you for doing this interview. Welcome to the scenic Kouvola. And congratulations, you are the first artist to ever be interviewed for Insider in the history of the magazine. So how many shows have you played around the new album? Ville Malja: When Freedom came out in last May, we played roughly 40-50 shows around Finland and a few in Germany. But an album grows old pretty quickly, so there’s no real point to start a full-on tour nine months after the album’s release, now now we’re doing these few separate shows. So what was done differently this time around? Any new influences? VM: Four people instead of three makes the whole process different. Janne Heikkonen: Also, we had an angry Canadian producer. Can’t go wrong with that. VM: We’re so old dogs that we don’t learn any new tricks. I don’t think there are any clear new favourites that we shared.
JH: Yeah, people generally draw their influences from age 15 to 20, and after that it doesn’t really matter what you listen to. You’re using the same influences that shaped your musical identity back when you were a teenager. Even if you haven’t listened to those things in years, they’re basically so etched in your DNA that you really can’t get rid of them. VM: Occasionally I’ve done something where I thought I was referencing to something we’ve made earlier, only to notice that it originally was a reference to something completely different. But I don’t really see that as a negative thing necessarily. The context defines a lot. JH: It’s actually funny that rock music in general is often berated for never doing anything new. But there is a kind of a drought in the field of rock music at the moment. I mean, there has not been a single really huge rock band on this millennium, really, that would’ve achieved the same kind of stardom or commercial success that the bands on the 80s or 90s did.
VM: No offense to any smaller band that has just started out and just released their first album or something, but even in Finland there hasn’t really been any new really big rock bands in the last 5 years. Okay, there are few exceptions that have clearly found their audience among the youth, but only a few. Back when we released our first album [in 2004], this kind of stuff was the music that the youth listened to. I mean, that’s just how it goes; eventually the tastes will shift back towards us again. JH: Maybe someone’ll be influenced by LAPKO one day. VM: Hopefully. JH: Hopefully not. So how much you do know about your opening band Lightbulb? JH: No any idea of them whatsoever. Now it’s a perfect opportunity to check them out and be positively surprised.

COVER STORY
VM: Yeah, and I remember how cool it was to be an opening band for someone else back in the day. Especially thinking it from the career point of view. JH: The times are just a bit bleak that way. When we started, in 2003-2005, we did a lot of shows as an opening band, and back then that usually lead to some other opportunity. Now I’m afraid that today being an opening band doesn’t lead to anything bigger or brighter, just judging by the fact that even the headliners are not doing that well these days. So I have to tip my hat for any Finnish band that can make any sort of break in 2016. VM: Yeah, it’s a fucking long way from opening at Downtown Kouvola to headline a place like Tavastia, for example. I mean, it was a long way from Harjavalta, where we came from, too, but due to the circumstances the road is even longer in this day and age. JH: Back when we started there were bands like System Of A Down, The Killers and Muse that were the biggest artists
in the world. Well, Muse still is, but most of them have more or less vanished. And in my opinion the new Muse album was kind of uninteresting. But then again, I don’t think you should berate a band about that. Some of the greatest and most successful rock bands in the world, like Queen or Pink Floyd for example, have done some terrible shit during their careers. There might be periods in a career of someone like Rush made four albums of consecutive crap, just trying to experiment with synth sounds. I don’t think there’s been anyone who has just created absolute gold throughout their career. Or then it just has to be a really short career. VM: That’s the other option. You really have to know when to fold it. JH: Well, Nirvana gets pretty close to that, but their career was rather short. I think it’s at least partially because there became a period when bands couldn’t just be bands anymore. There became a time when all the partying and drug
abuse had to be cast aside for becoming businessmen as well. Not that I’m saying that substance abuse is the way to make rock music, but the statistics speak for themselves. If you think about the oldest great rock bands, those people never sobered up. VM: Substance abuse can ruin people’s lives but it has also helped to create great art. JH: These things are cyclic. We can only imagine how depraved the rock, pop and EDM-stars of 2100 will be. I don’t really want to know that pop music will sound like in 200 years, though. The electric guitar is less than hundred years old, and look how omnipresent it is now.I have no idea how pop music will work in few hundred years. VM: I’m sure melody, rhythm and humanity will always remain. Follow LAPKO on: /lapkolapko @lapkogram @lapkomusic

Pollotarian: This “semi-vegetarian” diet restricts meat consumption to poultry and fowl
Flexitarian: A plant-based diet with the occasional meat item on the menu. They do their best to limit meat intake as much as possible and they have an almost entirely plant-based diet. This is not technically considered a “vegetarian” diet, but we commend the effort!

GIG REVIEW
LAPKO
@ Bar Downtown By: Sarah Rosenthal Two weeks ago the alternative band LAPKO played at Bar Downtown and were kind enough to let some of the Insider staff interview them as you have probably noticed flicking through the pages and seeing the double-paged interview there in the middle. That was obviously well before the gig which only started at around midnight.
Genre Alternative Rock Band Members Ville Malja Anssi Nordberg Janne Heikkonen Jussi Matikainen If you want to win one of their signed CD’s throw a piece of paper with your name and the answer to our question into the box outside of our office. Question: What is the name of their latest album?
Before ther main act the band Lightbulb was on stage giving it their best with a varity of own songs and cover versions of popular songs you’d recognise from the radio. The main gig was pretty amazing and Bar Downtown is great venue for gigs. If you’ve never been to the downstairs part of Downtown you should check out their schedule for their upcoming events on the right and make sure to check it out. The bartender is also very apt at making all sorts of cocktails and is willing and excited to learn more on that field. Suggestions are always welcome.

MOVIE REVIEW
DEADPOOL Size matters. By: Sarah Rosenthal and of course it didn’t end there. Apart from insulting the inconsistency to do with the X-Men of Superhero universe Deadpool is set in, they also went after those god-awful DC movies, among them Green Lantern, played by Reynolds, and Reynold’s career being based mainly on his looks rather than his acting method.
Genre Action, Adventure, Comedy Director An overpaid tool Starring A hot chick A British villain The comic relief a CGI character Rating
A former special forces operative who works as a mercenary in New York City is subjected to a rogue experiment that grants him healing powers. Yes, there is exposition to this character other than an amazing marketing campaign that was probably unnecessary since it was by far one of the most anticipated movies ever since like 5ever. Even people who were not fans of the comic books The movie didn’t even make it past the opening credits with starting to break the fourth wall
Ryan Reynolds is the embodiment of the Deadpool character. He did an absolutely awesome job and made the movie as epic as it is. In my opinion his sense of humour perfectly matches that of the original character. Before watching the movie, I was a bit afraid the story of Wade would slowdown the roller-coaster ride, bit it is nicely scattered throughout the movie. Not so much to lose track of the original storyline and not too little to be oblivious of where the superhero comes from. I think I would have enjoyed it a bit more if more if the Marvel universe was pulled into the story but unfortunately it belongs into the X-Men-Verse. The movie fulfilled all its promises and looking at superhero movies from the past years that says a lot. The Long Weekend of Ultron was a complete bummer, most people have lost every sense of orientation when it comes to the X-Men movies, the burial of the Fantastic Four franchise in just about 90min and don’t even get me started on the choices DC thought were brilliant and groundbreaking (casting Jared Leto as the Joker being the most harmless yet. And there is even more good news: Ryan Reynolds is under contract for at least one more Deadpool movie.
