International Business 13
Today I sit down with Prakash Neaupane from Nepal. Prakash is an international business student from IB13 and he is currently writing his thesis and finishing up some final courses. Besides school he also has a job in Finland, delivering mail late at night for Posti in Espoo. Combing a job with school and travelling often back and forth between Espoo and Kouvolu is not always an easy task.
The teacher in the Finnish class always tells me that talking about the weather is the ideal way to break the ice between the Finns and me. Hence, today, I will do it, not in order to get closer to any of you but to desperately have more people reading my article! Having complained to almost everyone I know in the school about how harsh the weather in Finland is, I now decide to officially disclose those complaints of mine to all of you, my dear Insider’s readers. Well, I have to say that there wouldn’t have been this article if I didn’t come back to Vietnam for the holiday. So 1 minute to express how thankful I am towards mom and dad for handling the financial issues needed for this trip. Back to the main point, I wonder how the plus-20-Celsius-degree winter sounds to the Finns. But to the Vietnamese people, it is cold. Not extremely cold, just cold. To be honest, I did underestimate the winter in Vietnam
since I have already experienced the cold in Finland last year. I remember during Christmas this year, my friend told me that it was plus 5 degrees meaning that this year Christmas is super hot. Meanwhile in Hanoi, people are posting statuses on Facebook describing how cold the plus-20-Celsius-degree weather is. The fact is that, it is quite cold in Hanoi because of the drizzle (In case you do not know because neither do I, drizzle and heavy rain are antonyms). I was convinced that the plus-20-Celsius-degree weather is cold due to hundreds of scientific reasons such as humidity and drizzle. But no, the moment when I got out of the plane back to Finland, Vietnam is definitely warm. The real thick layer of snow now covers everything. I was smiling when I saw the beautiful picture of the white Finland but crying when I only had a T-shirt and a cardigan with me then. Saying hello to the VR railway
station in Kouvola, I then knew that all the excitement to see snow I had before coming back here is slightly ridiculous. I was standing in front of the Bar Columbia with 1 big suitcase and a backpack, looking at the screen showing that it was -28 Celsius degrees on the top of VR building, wondering how could I survive then. So I decided to do nothing but standing there, getting myself more familiar to Kouvola, to Finland once again. Oh, my phone even refused to work appropriately in this kind of weather. It automatically shut down when I was taking it out of my pocket, trying to reach the taxi number. Fortunately, I was still capable of grabbing a taxi and got home safely. Having stayed in Kouvola for 2 days now, I gradually consider snow and cold are parts of my life. On the bright side, the view from my window is amazing and that’s enough. Enjoy your snow!
Why did you come to Finland? To study international business and because there is free education in Finland. That is the main reason to be here. Why did you choose to come to Kyamk? My first choice was in Helsinki but I couldn’t get good enough grades so finally I had to come here. Anyhow I am in Finland now and that is the main thing. What are you passionate about? My passion is to play games. Computer games? Not really. Outdoor games like football and cricket. I play football myself. Now in Finland I cannot really play cricket anymore though I do sometimes play in Helsinki with some Nepalese and Indian guys. We have some tournaments. Anyhow I am, somehow, managing to play! Cricket is really a big thing in Nepal? Yes because in India cricket is a really big thing. Players are

treated like big celebrities like Messi and Ronaldo. Cricket is mainly played in Australia, England and India. There is a really good Dutch player as well! What do you like or dislike about Finland? Really what I like is, though I am not from such a cold place, is the winter. The snow. Everywhere it looks good and obviously the summer is pretty awesome. Everything is green and the people are cheerful – always a smile on their face. That is really good.
I dislike the lack of job opportunities and obviously the language. I don’t dislike the language but it is too difficult. Until I learn the language there are no job opportunities. I cannot say I dislike Finland that is the problem for me. Another problem is that Finnish people don’t want to cooperate with you. I can put it this way: they are not too social. For example you are in a restaurant and meet a Finnish guy. You have some beer with him and you have good time. Next day you see him in the street and you say hi and you get no response from him. It makes you look like an idiot. Have you had problems finding work in Finland? Initially it was a problem – no not only initially, the first two to three months it was a big problem. I had no job and I was totally alone in Kouvola. I was depressed in a way. Besides finding a job have you had other difficulties in Finland? Not really. Besides the language and trying to find a job the first few months everything is fine. The social security is pretty awesome. Android, iOS or Windows? I prefer Android. And finally, your Zodiac sign? Vargo, though I don’t know what symbol it is. What would you like to ask from the next person? What do you like and dislike about working in Kyamk?

THE CLEANING LADIES

Part 1
Most of our students see our busy cleaning ladies almost every day. This week we would like to introduce them to our readers and show, who the people behind the hard work actually are. Tiina Riipi and Helena Koskinen were kind enough to tell us about their work in Kymenlaakson ammattikorkeakoulu. Tiina and Helena are not rookies in their job. Helena has worked with the students for 27 years now, while Tiina has been here for 30 years. However, they haven’t been working always in Kasarminmäki Campus. Back when they started, there was not such a thing as Kymenlaakson ammattikorkeakoulu. “Back in 1985 when I started, I was working in Kuusankoski. However, later when the university moved from
Kuusankoski to Kasarminmäki Campus, I moved too”, Tiina tells. Also Helena had to move from her original location, as she started her work in Elimäki. As you can probably guess from their many years in Kymenlaakson ammattikorkeakoulu, they both enjoy working among the students. “The best thing about working in the university, is the environment. The tasks are quite different depending on the season and the time of the day. There are also loads of people, which makes working fun.” Helena says. The ladies tell that one of the best things in their work is that they get to burn plenty of calories during the day. They try to use the lift only when they actually have to. However, on their free they have plenty
of hobbies. Tiina tells, that she enjoys jogging, crosswords, hand crafts and baking, when Helena likes to spend her time outdoors. -- Pretty tough ladies, with all that energy! Helena and Tiina started to work together in KyAMK in 2007. During the day, they work mainly separately even though they both work in the main building. “If the other one needs help with something, then we work together. For example, when we change the mould in the flowers it is quite hard work to do alone”, Tiina tells. Even though they work somewhat separately, they tell that they get along really well… Guessing it is because they are both Libras in their horoscopes. They only have someone else to work with when

the other one is on a holiday or sick. This is when SOL comes along. SOL, the cleaning company, is already cleaning Paja building. When Tiina or Helena is not working, SOL sends their cleaner to help the ladies.
jobs”, Helena tells. Before they head home, they have also cleaned the teachers’ rooms, done some laundry and taken care of the flowers. Working as a cleaner for 30 or 27 years makes the tasks quite routine.
The ladies start their day early. They clean the classrooms first, before the students arrive. “The mornings are the toughest. You have to clean all the classrooms before the lessons starts”, Tiina tells. After the classrooms, they clean the social areas, like stairs and bathrooms. The amount of work depends on the season. “When there’s no snow, there’s more sand and when there is snow, it gets more slippery”, Helena tells. The tasks that might feel nasty for the students, are every day jobs for the ladies. “You get used to do all kind of
During summer, when the students are having their holidays, Helena and Tiina have different kind of working days. “When the students are away we are taking the furniture out from the classrooms and we wax the floor”, the ladies tell. “This is nice because once you’ve done one room, you don’t need to clean it straight away again. That’s why it is nice to work also during the summertime”, Helena adds. As you can see, the work amount for two people is huge. But how can we, the students,
help the cleaning ladies in their job? “Placing the chairs under the table after classes makes a big difference. Cleaning the whole floor and placing every single table takes a lot of our time,” Helena says. “Also, taking your own trash into a bin after lesson helps a lot. It’s not nice for another student to come and sit, when there’s random trash on the table”, she adds. However, the students have improved in something. The ladies have noticed, that there are actually not that many coffee cups left on a table as there used to be. So good job everyone!

PANIC! AT THE DISCO
THE GOOD
DEATH OF A BACHELOR By: Roope Sorvo
I have always had a bit of a difficult relationship with Panic! at the Disco. To me, they have always been a slightly more photogenic version of Fall Out Boy: hard to love due to their infuriating self-conscious smugness, but thanks to their catchy hooks and left field creative calls, even harder to hate, even if they’re trying their best with their needlessly complicated 16-word song titles, cheesy tongue-in-cheek references, and puns that were probably fun in the recording studio but just make the listener groan so hard you can feel the vocal cords rupturing. Panic! has always been rather unfairly slapped into the Emo category despite their output actually being baroque-flavoured pop rock. Over the years they’ve been trying to furiously shake that stigma off their shoulders by expanding their sound towards surprising influences such as 60’s pop, psychedelic rock and other things that their mainly teenage audience would categorize as ‘oldies’. This time, on their fifth studio album Death of a Bachelor, they’re setting their sights to hip hop and jazz. And let’s just say the transition isn’t without problems. The album starts with “Victorious”, which uses the ever-so-annoying children’s playground taunting tune as the basis for its chorus melody, setting very sound course for the rest of the album: some of the hooks are infectious, but in the not fun, bubonic plague kind of way. “Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time” sounds like a product of a crunk act that decided to exclusively perform

Queen covers, right down to the Brian May-inspired rigid guitar solo. By the third track it becomes crystal clear that the guys of Panic! at the Disco are out of their depth with the whole hip-hop schtick, having all the right tools laid before them but having no idea how to use them beyond banging them together and wishing for the best. However, from “Emperor’s New Clothes” onwards the pieces click together. The out of place brass section suddenly fits the tone of the song, and the annoyingly catchy hooks are not so annoying it would overwhelm the catchiness. In

a single, faith-restoring surge the meter goes from “underwhelming” to “amazing”, while still using the same tools. And then they seem to get a hang of it. The title track is a smooth, very Sinatra-esque crooner that successfully mixes the traditional jazz elements with the electronic percussion. “LA Devotee” is probably the most balanced track on the album: the song’s faster-paced rock sound works together with the more pervasive musical elements of the album, giving the song almost ska-like energy. A brief glimmer of hope starts to shine in my heart: maybe the first tracks were just teething problems caused by the new musical environment? Unfortunately the following “Crazy = Genius” snuffs out the flame of hope like a bucket of ice water. The song feels like an early demo dug up from the depths of the band’s desk drawer: with its sloppy songwriting and overcrowded production combined with the same problems that plagued the earlier Panic! material, the song practically screams “the album was three minutes short and had this draft lying around in the studio”. The rest of the album fares barely better, with every track feeling more or less balanced mess of right elements in a wrong order without discernible highs or lows. Death of a Bachelor contains too few good tracks to save it from the truly faulty ones. Some really atrocious tracks are mixed together with outright masterpieces, forming a tangled mess of far extremes that roughly meet at the average of “Ehh”.
DINOSAUR By: Sarah Rosenthal
Genre Animation, Adventure Director Peter Sohn Starring Raymond Ochoa, Anna Paquin Rating Imagine a world where the 65 million years ago an asteroid didn’t wipe out the dinosaurs and they now live alongside humans. Imagine further that Apatosauruses now grow crops, more specifically corn and Tyrannosaurus Rex herds buffaloes and everybody talks in a distinct southern accent. It is certainly an interesting mind experiment; one that Disney and Pixar studios made into an adorable little animated movies where the landscape animation is pretty neat but all the creatures look rather goofy. The Apatosaurus Arlo is a smaller version of his two siblings Libby and Buck. They grow up on their parents farm and help with crops. They also farm very

Due to critters their dad builds a crop silo to store the corn for the winter but that doesn’t help keep these nifty buggers away. So one day Arlo and his dad build a trap and promptly catch the culprit but Arlo being the scared little chicken that he is is too afraid to kill it so it escapes. He goes after the critter with his dad. The approaching storm causes a spring flood and kills Arlo’s dad.

When Arlo next encounters the critter he goes after him and gets washed downstream ending up far away from home. On his journey home he encounters nasty flying dinosaurs, a friendly family of Tyrannosaurus Rexes and makes friends with the critter which he names Spot. Together Arlo and Spot make their perilous way back to Clawtooth Mountain. For all intents and purposes it is yet another story about finding your own inner strength, learning to forgive and how home and family is the most important thing in life. This time however they managed to do that all without worn out musical numbers. It is an overall enjoyable movie as long as you don’t think about it too much and try to ignore the Hollywood inherent racism that seems to apply for most kids movies these days as well. Gotta get them people on that when their still young after all I guess.
