A Unique Chapter for the Racine Police Department By Morris Reece
April 2nd, 2012 was NOT an April fool’s joke. In fact, two of somewhat paralleled and historical actions occurred this day. City Clerk Janice Johnson-Martin, an African-American, provided the swearing in oath to Art Howell as our new Police Chief, also an AfricanAmerican. What an honor for both! What makes this so outstanding is the history of Racine’s Police Department. Never have two candidates for Police Chief, two persons of color; Art Howell and Carlos Lopez, Hispanic, unequivocally and uniquely qualified, been set to become Racine’s first minority police chief simultaneously. The selection of one of the two candidates to become the police chief occurred in spite of the controversy surrounding the Police and Fire Commission electing to reopen the “qualified candidacy” list. This after one of the finalist candidates withdrew his name for further consideration. A decision that, quite frankly, smelled of rotten eggs. Ultimately, clearer heads prevailed and the decision was rescinded. Thus Racine has its first African-American Police Chief. BUT the fact is; he is the Police Chief for all residents of the City of Racine.
We cannot reasonably resolve in our minds by placing the entire burden of policing our community on the shoulders of one individual, we never should. Likewise, Mr. Howell cannot be expected to do so. Nor can we
anticipate his presence at every event we deem important. If Mr. Howell “fails” according to a variety of expectations and as many unrevealed agendas; we, as a community, will have ownership in the outcome. Hopefully, what will be occur under this new police administration is a collective, diverse assembly of minds to reflect on what might be in our community and what can be achieved if
and when our community truly collaborates openly; realizing too, that all actions and/or non-actions must occur within the policies and procedures that currently exist. Translation, Mr. Howell has come up through the ranks of the Racine community /neighborhood like no police chief before him. This provides him with a qualified unique perspective and applying that knowledge and wisdom. Our community support, bar no individual, must be willing to stand with this new administration. Will he perform miracles? I don’t expect that nor should anyone

(My) Translation, engage the entire Racine community…whatever your stage in life, you can make a difference! We must help our community transition from believing our neighborhoods are not salvageable. To when we confront any member of our community; we leave them better off with hope; believing that things will get better with their positive input and contribution. Many of our depreciated neighborhoods can potentially morph into considerably lower crime areas. And furthermore, be assisted into becoming more familyfriendly areas to raise stronger families to serve in greater leadership roles in their neighborhoods.
In conclusion, our Mayor John Dickert articulated a very poignant point during Mr. Howell’s swearing in. He said, “I hope there will come a day when we will simply say, “we have a new police chief; not of color, race or gender, etc, but police chief.” I completely agree. However, I must add a caveat to his comment. This type of event must occur more often than not. Then and only then, will these types of occasions become less noticeable and less controversial for most. For now, we must expect there will be blowback--- simply because…

Hayley Smith, granddaughter of Juanita Smith, is a student at Washington Park High School. Hayley is a member of the National Honors Society and is on the Honor Roll. She has taken several advanced classes in preparation for college and has achieved a 4.1 grade point average. Hayley has been very active in high school. She has been a member of the Washington Park High School Pom Pon squad for four years, the Vocal Ensemble, the Positive Impact Program, and Yearbook Committee. In addition to her school activi-
ties, Hayley has been a dedicated member of the Girl Scouts of America for thirteen years. She has also earned recognition as an exceptional dancer as a student at the Academy of Performing Arts. Hayley attends St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church where she is in the Word in Motion praise dance ministry, and she also sings in the youth choir.
Hayley plans to attend Ball State university in Muncie, Indiana, and will major in Policial Science and Dance. Her goal is to become a lawyer and dancer.

Zhane Pica, daughter of SaQunda Kolstedt and Kenneth Kolstedt (stepfather) is a student at Lutheran High School. She is on the honor roll and is a member of the National Honors Society. She has achieved a 3.4 grade point average.
Zhane’s school activities included participation in Student Council, the Ambassadors’ Organization, the Spirit Club, Drama Club, and Yearbook Committee. She also was actively involved in volleyball, basketball, and cheerleading.

Healing for the Heart
A Woman’s Journey, A Mother’s Love BY: Allena G. Berry
It may have been a bad dream, or even the teeniest of boo-boos; perhaps it was a tearful phone call or excitement over an accomplishment. More than likely, however, it was a culmination of these small events that make up what
you think of as “Mom.” Mothers, biological or through a special bond, have a huge impact on our lives, both as children and onto adulthood. It’s a responsibility that many women hold with a certain degree of poise that can only be described as awe-inspiring.
It’s a responsibility that Merida Kirk-Griffie, 83, took up at an early age. In her book, The Power of a Struggling Woman, Ms. Kirk-Griffie details her story of motherhood, which started when she was just fourteen years old. The story begins with Peter, a young man who lived on an adjacent farm to that of Ms. Kirk-Griffie’s. Peter would frequently visit after the chores on the farm were completed. During one of these visits, as Ms. KirkGriffie described it, young Peter “out talked” the even younger Merida. Nine months later, Ms. Kirk-Griffie had a little girl and a lot of explaining to do.
“I had to go before the church and ask forgiveness,” Ms. Kirk-Griffie recalled. “It was tough.” But where many young girls in similar situations, in the early 1940s, would have been left to survive alone by their families and their communities, Ms. Kirk-Griffie described the warm embrace she received from her family. This warmth would forever color how Merida would view her own role as mother. Merida’s early ascent into motherhood is
a tale of the strength of two women: the older, seeing her child take on the responsibilities that no teenager should have to bear, but bear them she did, and the young girl, understanding that this challenge of motherhood was one that she would need support in completing. “It was not typical,” she began. “I was supposed to be outcast, but my mom took me in.”
Three years later, Ms. Kirk-Griffie was married. She and her husband, like many young couples, were toiling to establish a place for themselves, picking up odd jobs where and when they could to be able to purchase a little place on a nearby pasture. Ms. Kirk-Griffie had other motives for getting established, however. The couple was living with her husband’s mother, and, as Ms. Kirk-Griffie explained with a mischievous, youthful laugh, “things didn’t go so good with the mother-in-law and the wife in the same house.”
The couple eventually moved out to their own place, but they would not be under the same roof for long. Her husband, seeking employment, moved to Racine to work on the railroad. Merida was left, a single mom in all but name. She found employment where she could but, like many single mothers, had difficulty finding consistent childcare. Prayer, and the generosity of watchful neighbors, was the only thing that propelled Ms. Kirk-
Griffie through those difficult times.
The strength she built up during this period of her life would be instrumental later on in life, as Ms. Kirk-Griffie would have to go through a mother’s worst nightmare: losing not just one, but two, of her children. Where many would have given up, Merida soldiered on, more resolved to cherish and care for her remaining children. And that is exactly what Ms. Kirk-Griffie has done. After 69 years of being a mother, she will spend this Mother’s Day traveling to New York to spend time with her daughter and two children. Furthermore, Ms. KirkGriffie has extended the definition of motherhood and is now a self-proclaimed “mother in the community.”

We often find ourselves stressed out and overwhelmed when we have a whole list of things we can't control. Maybe you're having trouble paying the bills and worried you can't afford to buy your child's birthday gift, a set of tires for your car or pay for the dental work you really need.
The devil wants you to spend your life frustrated, anxious, in fear, and out of touch with God. But we have to stop thinking about what's wrong and start focusing our mind on God, who's in control. In the Fire, but not Burned
You can do everything you need to do when God is with you—and He's always with you. In the Bible, the book of Daniel shares the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego who, because of their faith in God, refused to worship a statue of the king of Babylon. Their protest infuriated the king so much that he ordered them to be thrown into a fiery furnace that was heated seven times hotter than usual. In fact, the furnace was so hot it burned up the men who threw them inside of it!
The Bible says that the three men were thrown into the fire bound, but when the king looked in, he saw four unbound men walking around in the fire. Who was the fourth man? Who freed them from bondage and rescued them from death? The One who never leaves us nor forsakes us. So here's the point: If you go in the fiery furnace, Jesus will go in with you. Anxiety comes when we try to figure everything out on our own. One of the things we have to learn when we're having trouble is that we don't need to have the answers all the time. We don't have to know how, when or why. If we knew all the answers, we wouldn't need to trust God.
We have to get comfortable not knowing. That's what faith is.

No matter what you might be facing right now or what comes up in the future, I want you to remember two things: God is with you—and He's in control.

3rd annual Drug Bowl
Students payed close attention as they attempted to answer questions during the 3rd annual Drug Bowl held at the Cesar Chavez Center on Saturday, April 14, 2012. The purpose of the event was to educate young people about the dangers of drug use.
Wally Booker is honored by the community for his years of service and dedication to helping young people in Racine. He has impacted many lives over the years and is surrounded above by those who have been positively affected by his influence.

St. Paul Baptist Church honor James Kinchen and Tim Johnson, Ministers of Music
A special celebration took place on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at St. Paul Baptist Church to honor James Kinchen, professor of music at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Tim Johnson, minister of music at St. Paul Baptist Church. Friends, family, and people from churches throughout Racine gathered to share in this occasion and pay homage to these men who have labored in this community for years. Rev. Della Buckely organized the event and
stressed the importance of recognizing and honoring these men who have devoted themselves to serving the church and the community.
Kinchen, in addition to being a professor of music at UW-Parkside, is also the director of choral activities there. He has traveled the globe as a conductor and choral scholar and serves as the music director of the Milwaukee Choristers. His ability to encour-

age, train, and teach young, developing musicians continues to be the focus of his service.
Johnson has a long history as a music teacher and composer in Racine. Many of his compositions are utilized by churches across the United States. He also has formed community choirs in this area to give young people the opportunity to express their talent and sing praise to God through music.

Mother’s Day Laughs! After putting her children to bed, Jacqui changes into her old jeans and a worn out blouse and proceeds to wash her hair. As she hears the children getting more and more noisy in their bedroom, her tolerance grows thin. At last Jacqui wraps a towel around her wet head and storms into their room, putting them back to bed and giving them severe warnings. While leaving the room, she overhears her three-year-old say in a shaky voice, 'Who was "that"?'
While assembling furniture, Liz asked her friend's six-year-old son, Ricky, to bring her a screwdriver. 'Do you want a 'Daddy' screwdriver or a 'Mummy' screwdriver?' Ricky politely inquired. Confused by the question, Liz responded with, 'Bring me a 'Mummy' screwdriver.' Ricky returned and handed her a butter knife.
