Begun in 2011, the project extends water supply to parts of Gold River and Rancho Cordova where groundwater was tainted by seepage from the Aerojet Rocketdyne facility. Purification is achieved at the district’s Ancil Hoffman Park plant on the American River’s Carmichael side. Treated water then passes under the river via over 80 feet of newly laid pipeline. The project also assures reliable water supply for Gold River and Rancho Cordova during droughts. Its $8 million price tag was covered by Aerojet Rocketdyne, the California Department of Water Resources and the Carmichael Water District.

Sacramento Environmental Commission recently applauded the Carmichael Water District for a project that installed a pipeline under the American River and restored vernal habitats.
“This project is a great example of public and partnerships working together to solve problems and improve water quality.” The commissioners applauded the project’s restoration of wildlife habitat. During the six years of implementation, 400 feet of unsightly and exposed steel pipe from from the 1950s were removed from the river channel near Rossmoor Bar. Other unused concrete and metal structures were also demolished. Vernal ponds in Ancil Hoffman Park are now assured piped-in water. Culvert improvement and debris removal have reconnected an upstream riperian habitat near Rossmoor Bar to water inflow. “This project is a great example of public and partnerships working together to solve problems and improve water quality and the environment we enjoy,” says CWD manager Steve Nugent.
