The Wide Variety of the World Games he World Police & Fire Games includes many traditional and familiar sports, such as basketball, baseball, soccer, softball and golf. But the less-familiar sports make the Games unique. Here are details on some of those events:

T

DRAGON-BOAT RACING: A standard contemporary dragon boat is made up of 22 people. There are 20 paddlers in pairs, facing the bow. There is one drummer, or caller, at the bow facing the paddlers, and one sweep, or tiller, at the rear. The caller directs the group through hand signals and voice calls. Dragon boaters are paddlers, not rowers, paddling in a

canoeing style. Race distances are 200 to 2000 meters. Sunday, June 28, at National Harbor in Prince George’s County, Md. CROSSFIT: CrossFit is a strength and conditioning fitness regimen program, with competition consisting of a mix of aerobic exercise, gymnastics and weightlifting. Thursday, June 28, and Friday, June 29, at Lerner Town Square at Tysons II. ORIENTEERING – CLASSIC and SPRINT: Each runner starts separately at equal, predetermined intervals. The only aids a runner can use are the map, control de-

scriptions and a compass. Runners who lose their control card, omit a control or visit controls in the wrong order will be disqualified. Long-distance event competitors must wear long trousers and a shirt with long or short sleeves. Unless authorized, telecommunication equipment may not be used in the competition. Orienteering - Classic is Sunday, June 28, at Fountainhead Regional Park. Orienteering - Sprint is Wednesday, July 1, at George Mason University. TOUGHEST COMPETITOR ALIVE: Athletes compete in eight different events without much time in between. Athletes

A Message From Our Chief,

I

’m Chief Keith Brower with Loudoun County’s Combined Fire Rescue System. I am honored that our men and women are participating in the World Police and Fire Games and extend greetings to our brothers and sisters who have traveled to Northern Virginia to participate in the games.

ULTIMATE FIREFIGHTER: This sport challenges and demonstrates the fitness of the participants. Wearing full gear, pairs of competitors race head-to-head as they simulate the physical demands of real-life firefighting by performing a linked series of five tasks. Those include climbing a five-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses, and rescuing life-sized 175-pound victims. They race against themselves, opponents and the clock. Wednesday, July 1, through Saturday, July 3, at Springfield Town Center. FIREFIGHTER MUSTER: This is a competition typically between fire companies that includes several firefighter-specific events, such as hose lay, hose roll, ladder climb, bucket brigade, cart race and obstacle course. Saturday, July 4, at Fairfax City Station 3. FIREFIGHTER STAIR RACE: Firefighters in full gear race up a stairwell of a building with a minimum of 26 floors. Saturday, June 27, at Tysons Tower. POLICE K9: The event tests the strength, stamina and teamwork of handler and K9. It consists of a number of stations, obstacles, firearms, scent tracking, decoy apprehension, vehicle searches and environmental distractions. Wednesday, June 27, and Thursday, June 28, at Lake Fairfax Park.

jury, might compete in dodgeball. “All the big stuff and planning is all done; now it’s just dealing with the little fires that pop up, then it’s a quick fix,” Blechl said. “We want to be the best hosts and make this sporting experience as great of an experience as it can be.”

Indoor soccer matches also will be held as part of the Games. They will be at the Michael & Son SportsPlex at Dulles (21610 Atlantic Blvd., Sterling), and 250 participants are expected for the contests July 1 through 4. rom soccer and cycling to net sports and paintball, Loudoun venues should be hopping during the World Police & Fire Games. More than 3,200 athletes are expected to participate at nine spots in the county, according to Visit Loudoun, the locality’s tourism agency. Those numbers should mean a boon for sports fans, first responder-backers and local businesses. Perhaps the most talked-about sport in Loudoun will be outdoor soccer, expected to draw 700 participants to Morven Park from June 27 to July 3. Teams will square off on eight fields at the historic former home of Westmoreland Davis, Virginia’s governor from 1918 to 1922. “We’re pretty excited about it,” said Melissa Ryburn, Morven Park’s athletic fields manager. Fans attending the games should enter the park at 41793 Tutt Lane off Route15 north of Leesburg, and then follow signs

F

and directions from parking crews, Ryburn said. “Parking is pretty much unlimited here,” she said. Concessions will be offered throughout the day each day at Morven, Ryburn said, including some options for breakfast. And there’s plenty of room on the grounds for spreading out blankets for picnics, she said. Visitors also might want to wander the hiking trails on the property, she said, and a vendor tent will offer discounted coupons for anyone who wants to tour the mansion. From 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, a competitive blood drive will be held, with police supporters taking on firefighter aficionados. In addition, a week before first-responding footballers hit Morven Park in droves, the D.C. United SoccerFest will take over Gov. Davis’ former digs. The SoccerFest is a tournament for men and women of all ages. Teams consist of six players, and Police & Fire Games participants were to receive a discount off the price of registration, so this could be an opportunity to see police and fire athletes in action before the Games opening ceremony June 26 at RFK Stadium in Washington. More information about SoccerFest is at www.dcunitedsoccerfest.com.

chance meeting in a foreign country in the late 1990s between Centreville neighbors who previously did not know each other sparked the idea to bring the 2015 World Police & Fire Games to Fairfax County. The Games, which will attract more than 9,000 athletes from 64 countries, begin June 26 and run until July 5, with the majority of the events in Fairfax. In 1999, Bruce Blechl of the Fairfax County Police Department and Jerome Williams with the Fairfax County Fire Department were competing in different events during the Games in Stockholm, Sweden. Blechl was a distance runner; Williams an Ultimate Firefighter participant. Their paths crossed, they chatted, and the two realized they lived only about three miles apart. They began sharing the idea about hosting the Games in Fairfax some year. That way the two wouldn’t have to travel so far to compete. But Blechl and Williams didn’t just talk about the idea. Once back home and over the next few of years, they began looking into how to make their dream come true. “It has been a long journey, but we knew it would be a great idea to have the Games

in our backyards if we could get them some day,” Blechl said. The two contacted the World Games federation. Blechl talked up the idea locally with politicians and in the private sector about what it would take to gain traction. “The important thing was to get the local support,” Blechl said. One of his first contacts was then-Fairfax Supervisor Gerry Connolly, now a member of Congress. Connolly, who later became board chairman in Fairfax, immediately liked the idea. The board was quick to give its support. “We thought it would work, so I and the board embraced it immediately,” Connolly said. “We thought it was an opportunity to highlight what Fairfax County has separate from D.C.” Blechl and Williams kept working, and their idea continued to gain support and the right backing. Then, in 2009, their initial casual conversation back in Stockholm became reality when the 2015 Games were awarded to Fairfax. “The World Police and Fire Games is a great opportunity to celebrate the enormous contribution that first-responders make to our daily lives,” said Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe. “It will also be an economic boon to Northern Virginia and the commonwealth as a whole. I am honored that Virginia is the primary host for this

he Fairfax 2015 World Police & Fire Games will be a new experience for Jon Stanley and his partner, 2-yearold Duke. Not only are the Arlington residents participating in the Games for the first time, but it will also be the pair’s first K9 competition. Stanley, 33, and Duke, a male German shepherd, are entered in the narcotics and apprehensive portion of the police service dog K9 events. Their event is Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28, at Lake Fairfax Park. Stanley is a corporal K9 handler for the Arlington County Police Department, where he has worked for eight years. The competition in the Games will be an extension of the work he and Duke perform during a regular week. “It should be a good time to compete against other dogs and officers from different police departments,” Stanley said. “It’s a fun competition. We should do fine as long as I can stay calm. That will keep Duke calm. I’m mainly curious to see what this is all about. Duke has done well, and has been very efficient during training and

practice for the Games.” Once his competition is complete, Stanley plans to watch other events. He’s particularly interested in rugby. “These Games bring so many opportunities to watch other events and athletes,” he said. Stanley’s family never had a dog when he was growing up in Boca Raton, Fla. He initially became a dog handler as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps at Quantico. He enjoyed that line of work, then eventually pursued the specialty with the Arlington County Police Department. “It’s something I’ve enjoyed and hope to continue,” Stanley said. “When a presentation was made about the Games to our department and about the K9 competition, it seemed like a good fit. I think Duke and I can do well.”

A

t one point in his life, Sean Cheetham was a rising star in the Chicago Cubs’ organization who could throw a fastball 97 mph before shoulder injuries ended his playing career in 1993 at age 23. These days, the 44-year-old Cheetham doesn’t even pitch recreationally. But he remains connected to baseball in a new role. The transition began a year ago, when the Woodbridge High School graduate crossed paths with a former teacher and coach who asked whether Cheetham wanted to help him coach baseball at Stonewall Jackson High School in Manassas. Cheetham agreed and quickly discovered a passion for teaching others about the game. When Jack Ferrick asked Cheetham last fall to step in as the head baseball coach for Fairfax’s entry in the World Police & Fire Games, Cheetham gladly accepted.

Making people look and feel beautiful. It is who we are, it is what we do... it is our passion.

Experience, Creativity, and Passion Our team is carefully selected to fulfill that goal based on factors such as experience, creativity, and passion. Our stylists have excelled in this highly competitive and challenging industry, so you are sure to get the best service. We invite you to experience this for yourself!

SEAN CHEETHAM

Ferrick, the head baseball coach at Osbourn Park High School, was Fairfax’s original coach, but stepped down to lighten his schedule. At the time, Cheetham was trying out for the team as a first baseman, but he felt more comfortable as a manager. “I could compete, but there are a lot younger guys out there,” said Cheetham, a detective in the major crimes division for the Fairfax County Police Department. “I will enjoy making out the lineup and getting everyone in to play.” Cheetham, who served as an assistant baseball coach at Patriot High School this spring, will oversee a 24-man squad that includes fellow detective Scott Bronowicz, a former minor-league catcher. Cheetham and Bronowicz are two of the team’s three players with professional baseball experience. Under the rules, each team is allowed one civilian on the roster to serve as a coach. Cheetham brought in Paul Colangelo, a Potomac High School graduate and brother of former major leaguer Mike Colangelo. To prepare for the World Police & Fire Games, Fairfax has played two scrimmages and practiced every Sunday at Herndon High School. The team also worked out once a week over the winter at Rip City, an indoor baseball facility in Sterling. With players working different shifts, the team has not competed together as a full squad. But each person was responsible for keeping in game shape. “I’ll see our whole roster for game 1,” Cheetham said. “We’re not kids. They were told to pair up with someone who lives near you and get to as many practices and scrimmages as you can.” Cheetham, who has been in law enforcement since 1996, competed in his first World Police & Fire Games in 2011. That year, the event was held in New York City and Cheetham was a bowler. His group won two bronze medals and a silver. Cheetham said a scheduling conflict will prevent him from bowling at these games, but he will play golf in addition to his baseball duties. “It’s the atmosphere,” Cheetham said in response to why he likes the World Police & Fire Games. “People come in from all over the world. You see them all and it’s like being in the Olympic Village. It’s a neat experience.”

unning and shooting are two of Nick Barb’s favorite activities, both for pleasure and for his job. This month, the 29-year-old private first class and member of the emergency-response team for the Fairfax County Sheriff ’s Office will compete in both during the police biathlon event at the Fairfax 2015 World Police & Fire Games. “This is my wheelhouse,” said Barb, who lives in Culpeper County. “I get to compete in two things I love doing while meeting a lot of fantastic people at these Games. I’ve been getting my mind and body prepared by training hard. Not knowing what to expect is the hardest thing.” Barb is participating in the Games for the first time. “My goal is to win and enjoy the experience, but until you are on a world stage, you don’t know where you stand against others,” Barb said. “This will be a once-ina-lifetime experience and opportunity.” The biathlon is a four-mile run that includes intervals of shooting at each mile.

Barb believes his abilities as a marksman and r u n n e r h ave him ready for this particular type of biathlon. In addition to the biathlon, Barb will play for the Sheriff ’s Of f ice men’s softball team and compete in NICK BARB dry-dock rowing. Barb was encouraged to participate in the biathlon and men’s softball by fellow Sheriff ’s Office employee Tony Shobe, the Game’s director of sports as well as a softball player. “I didn’t know anything about the Games,” Barb said. “Tony knew I liked these sports and told me to ‘Go for it,’” Barb said. “Why not? It’s local, it’s where

I grew up, and it’s a world stage on our home field.” Barb is a native of Dallas, but moved around a lot with his family while growing up, attending 10 schools in 12 years. He graduated from Fairfax High School, where he was a member of a district championship boys soccer team.

Barb will not play soccer during the Games. He’s adding rowing because he believes he is in the proper condition to do well. “I train a lot on rowing machines, so we’ll see where I fall in the Games,” he said. “I expect the competition in all of the events to be strong.”

WORLD POLICE & FIRE GAMES

ix years ago, Tony Shobe had never heard of the World Police & Fire Games. Now, the Fairfax County resident and 2nd lieutenant with the Fairfax County Sheriff ’s Office is maybe the busiest he has ever been in his life as the director of sports for the Fairfax 2015 Games, which begin June 26 and run through July 5. Shobe is in charge of overseeing all aspects of dozens of different sports, from the traditional games such as baseball and soccer to non-traditional events such as firefighter stair climb and dragon-boat racing. The Games include 61 sports, with more than 9,000 athletes from across the U.S. and world expected to participate. Events will be held throughout Northern Virginia, with the majority in Fairfax County. George Mason University will host 10 sports. Fairfax high schools will host eight more. Shobe is involved in decisions about the majority of the details, ranging from securing venues and on-site coordinators for the specific sports to planning medal presentation ceremonies. If that’s not enough, Shobe also will participate in the Games as a member of the sheriff ’s office slow-pitch softball team and will continue to be on call while on the field. “I volunteered for this position, but to be honest, I had no idea what was ahead or what I was getting into,” Shobe said. “But I have no regrets. I have met so many great people and have so much great help.” In preparation for the position, Shobe traveled to other countries and cities to observe preparations for previous Games. He’ll also advise his successor for the 2017 Games in Montreal. “We learned so much from those trips, and we got as prepared as we possibly could from the experience,” Shobe said. Shobe believes his various positions with the sheriff ’s office have prepared him to be the director of sports. He has worked for the sheriff ’s office since 1995. Shobe was assigned to the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy as a basic staff instructor in 2000-01 and was the sheriff ’s office public information officer in 2004-06. He has been a member of the Sheriff ’s Emergency Response Team (SERT) since 1997 and has been the team’s commander since 2005. Right now, though, Shobe said the vast majority of his time is spent preparing for
