The Mornington Peninsula:

AUSTRALIA’S GOLFING PLAYGROUND

St Andrews Beach Golf Course

Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula is one of Australia’s most popular golfing destinations. Featuring some of the country’s highest-rated courses along with jaw-dropping scenery, golfers are spoiled for choice.

St Andrews Beach Golf Course St Andrews Beach is a golf course that simply stuns golfers from the moment they walk out onto the first tee. Visually superb and architecturally sublime, the St Andrews Beach layout lends itself perfectly to sprawling sand dunes and incredible beach-side terrain, providing for an unforgettable golf experience. St Andrews Beach is now currently ranked as the #1 public access golf course on Australia’s Mainland and was designed by internationally-renowned architect Tom Doak (who was also responsible for the renowned Barnbougle Dunes and Cape Kidnappers golf courses). The layout offers an unforgettable mixture of short and long holes that demand a well-balanced mix of thought and execution, a challenge that only heightens the experience and enjoyment during play. The designer Doak himself said that if he “could place any one of his designs on his doorstep, St Andrews Beach might be his first choice.” Impeccable natural drainage ensures pristine playing surfaces all year round and a fleet of motorised carts are readily available for hire. There is a licensed and well catered pro shop with al fresco deck available for refreshments, with affordable green fees including Senior, Group and Afternoon golf discounts available. Competitions are open to all golfers, with official handicap weekends and other peak days. On-site, self-contained accommodation is also available. The Mornington Peninsula Golf Trail

The Spectacular New Par-3 at Mornington Golf Club (Photo by Gary Lisbon)

Mornington Golf Club There is exciting news for golfers on the Mornington Peninsula, with the beautiful Mornington Golf Club set to unveil a spectacular new cliff-top par-3 this spring. The Mornington Golf Club is known across Melbourne for its excellent views of the Bay and the city skyline. The location of the new par-3 is directly atop the cliffs near Sunnyside beach. Designed by Ben Davey from Contour Golf Design and Darius Oliver from Planet Golf, the objectives were simple – to create an interesting green site that follows the natural landforms as

best it can and doesn’t divert attention from the stunning surrounds. With the land falling sharply toward a creek on the right, the green was anchored by a deep trench-like bunker along this side and set on the horizon to appear as if directly atop the cliff. Another bunker was placed 10-15 metres short of the green to confuse depth perception and complicate what is otherwise a straightforward tee shot. The angle of the tee was designed to make the green surface more visible, and easier to approach, the further forward you play. Back tee golfers are only hitting a 150-metre shot, but to a green partly hidden and angled across them slightly.

Are you planning your next group golf trip? Our golf packages can be tailored to suit your individual or group requirements with our extensive range of golf course and accommodation partners

For any golf club, a new hole is a major undertaking, and the hope for Mornington with this par-3 is that its success will ensure continued membership growth and increased green fee play. Membership is growing at Mornington Golf Club and the new par-3 is just one of many new initiatives being implemented by this forward thinking, proactive Club. Roll on Springtime so we can all get down to Mornington to play this exciting new hole! For more information: Tallis Drive, Mornington, 3931 Phone: 5975 2784 www.morningtongolf.com.au

The Mornington Peninsula Golf Trail should be on every golfer’s “Bucket List”. World famous architects, such as Thomson Perrett, Robert Trent Jones Jr and Tom Doak, have created wonderful examples of links, resort and traditional courses for the Golf Trail. The courses provide exhilarating views over Port Phillip and Westernport Bays and Bass Strait. Eleven of the Mornington Peninsula Trail courses are in the Top 100 Australian courses! The Mornington Peninsula Golf Trail provides a unique golfing experience of playing fourteen different courses that are all within one-hour drive. Avid golf enthusiasts and social golfers are discovering that the combination of courses, their accessibility, their variety and the sheer number of them provides a golfers’ paradise that is hard to resist. Play seven different courses on the Mornington Peninsula Golf Trail and be rewarded with a free Golf Trail polo shirt and cap, valued at $60. Play the remaining seven courses and receive a free personalised framed photograph (valued at $200) of the courses you played on the Mornington Peninsula Golf Trail. Highlands Golf Club

INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL | September 2017

Highlands Golf Club Just over an hour from Sydney Airport sits the beautiful Highlands Golf Club; built on the side of Mount Alexander Hill with majestic views overlooking the Southern Highlands towards Wollongong. The par-70 course is a challenging test for all golfers, but is also friendly enough to enjoy your round with many birdie opportunities available. The club has a rich and diverse history; the original 9-hole course opened in 1926. Carnegie Clark designed the course and was also the Club’s first professional. Early on, the greens were protected from wandering cattle by barbed wire. A breakaway group of members formed a new club and 9-hole course in 1933. With course upkeep organised on a voluntary basis, the idea of two clubs by 1940 was forgotten. The expansion to 18 holes was completed in 1974. The course’s signature hole is their short but tricky par-3 18th. Measuring just over 100m, it doesn’t care what level of player you are; it can either dish out a roundsaving birdie, or a card-destroying “big number” (while also emptying your bag of all your golf balls!) After your round you can enjoy a cold refreshment on the balcony which overlooks the 18th hole, or tuck in to some of the best food in the Southern Highlands. Highlands welcomes husband and wife team Tegan and James Purcell to the Pro

Gold Creek Golf Club Shop. Tegan is the first female golf pro in the Southern Highlands and they will be a great addition to the team at Highlands. For more information: Highlands Golf Club, Hume Highway, Mittagong NSW 2575. Phone: (02) 4871 1995, or visit www.highlandsgolfclub.com.au. Gold Creek Golf Club Golfers are treated like ‘gold’ at Gold Creek Golf Club, one of the ACT’s premier layouts. Combine that with the club’s other big ‘plus’, twilight golf, and you can see why this has become one of the most progressive clubs in the ACT. Actually there’s two great assets that make it worth packing your clubs and squeezing in a game there as the weather

and the perfect spring evenings begin to lure you back to golf. First of those is the 50 per cent off green fees if you are happy to tee off anytime after 4pm. Add to that the fact the Gold Creek club has more Yamaha carts available (55 at last count) than any other club in the ACT and you’ll soon be planning to slip in not just a quick nine, but perhaps a quick 18 at the end of the day...and just wait until daylight savings starts, too.

Moss Vale GC (Dormie House) Moss Vale golf course is regarded as one of the prettiest and challenging courses in country NSW, and while you’re only 90 minutes’ drive from the Sydney CBD, you’ll feel like you’re a world away in the relaxed and peaceful Southern Highlands. The golf club was founded in 1902 and designed in its current location and layout by Carnegie Clark.

Moss Vale Golf Course (Dormie House) The 18-Hole Championship Golf Course is a par-71, 5805m (Men’s tees), and Par -73, 5300m (Women’s tees). A number of twists and turns, creek crossings and deceptive greens make the course a true test. The creek which runs through the course has to be crossed 12 times during the round. From the clubhouse, the Moss Vale layout appears hilly, but after the opening five holes, it levels out and heads into the quiet countryside. Moss Vale GC has revamped its fulllength driving range which is open to members and guests for lessons or a quick practice before tackling the course. Inside the Clubhouse you will find the newly refurbished SHOTZ Dining area

which offers one of the best a-la-carte menus in the district. Pricing is very competitive and booking is essential. Social groups and golfers are always welcome at Moss Vale GC. Aside from the excellent range of play and stay packages, Social golfers can play 18 holes for $35 ($30 for Dormie House guests) and $21 for 9 holes ($18 for Dormie guests). The perfect place for a weekend away with friends, Dormie House provides a comfortable and welcoming environment. Established in the early 1930s, Dormie House retains its period charm while providing all the amenities of a quality golf resort. The intimate atmosphere and personal service make

Capital Golf Club / Canberra International Golf Centre

Capital Golf CLUB / Canberra International Golf Centre THERE are not too many golf venues – anywhere – where there are seven PGA golf professionals at your service when you arrive on their doorstep. That’s the case at the home of the ACT’s golf academy, the Canberra International Golf Centre, right across the road from the Capital Golf Club in Canberra. Both venues are now operated by 40-year PGA member Pete Kohlsdorf. Kohlsdorf began his career as a club pro at Goulburn GC, Nowra and Murrumbidgee Country Club. It was there that he trained Colin Swatton (Jason Day’s caddy, mentor and manager) doing his apprenticeship during the 90’s. For the past 21 years Kohlsdorf has been running various golf retail operations, so if anyone knows what the golfer needs, he does.

The International Golf Centre boasts the largest range of golf equipment under one roof in Australia and includes all major brands of golfing hardware, shoes, clothing, balls and every other accessory you could ever need for a game of golf ... and all just metres from the Capital Golf Club. Stay tuned too, because Pete is close to launching a new golf direct on-line shop in the near future as well. No matter what type of golf you want to play, these two venues hold the answer. Australia’s premier pitch and putt golf centre is located at CIGC with 18 holes under lights day and night. There is also an 18-hole mini golf course that will keep you AND the kids amused. There is also a huge outdoor putting green to work on your putting. Throw in their two-tier floodlit driving range with 64 floodlit bays ... there are 29 bays fitted with Range servant automatic

tee-up machines as well, and the whole bottom tier of the range has heated bays in case you arrive and the night is a cool one. There’s plenty of on-site parking as well and once you cross the road, Capital Golf Club has tee times available in and out of competition hours on Saturdays and Sundays. Remember this is a public golf course too, so you can book your tee time online via their website. The course itself is one of Canberra’s most picturesque 18-hole layouts, with a par of 69 for the men and 72 for the women, offering a unique challenge to golfers of all levels. Here is a course which features many tight pine tree-lined fairways which can bring even the best players a stern test of their iron play. Since the early 70s Capital has proudly carried the tag of having the best bentgrass greens in the ACT.

It’s worth noting that despite all those attractions, it not entirely just about golf at Capital. The International Golf Centre has a gymnasium on site and an exciting new bar and bistro opened on September 1, which is available for conferences and weddings. Situated in Canberra’s south ‘Abode Narrabundah’ now boasts new accommodation with 85 apartments and it’s well worth checking out their tempting play-and-stay deals. Seriously, here’s a great spot for golfers to stay with everything available – and more – within metres of each other and it scarcely be in more beautiful surroundings. Air Adventure celebrates four decades

2

017 marks the 40th anniversary since Rod Dyer founded Air Adventure Australia.

In 1977 Rod, equipped with his own plane and pilot’s license, started flying guests to his remote, one-million acre cattle station, Ellenbrae in the Kimberley. He recognised that the sheer size of Australia means if you’re on the road then you are limited as to what you can see and you’ll spend countless hours driving rather than exploring. This and his thirst for adventure put Rod in a positon to show fellow travellers the vastness and picturesque regions of remote Australia. Thus, Air Adventure was born. Over these 40 years, safety has always been the number one priority for Air Adventure. Since 1977 thousands of miles and happy adventurers have flown with the company to iconic places across Australia and they have done so with a perfect safety record. These days all aircraft are flown by a highly-experienced commercial captain and fully supported by Airline Safety Standards. In partnership with Sharp Airlines, Air Adventure operates immaculately-presented Cessna Conquest II aircraft and when you step on board you are entering a sophisticated and high-performance touring vehicle. With a twin turbine engine (prop jet), state-of-the-art Garmin avionics and a highly-experienced, qualified captain, you are in safe hands.

Today, with Rod’s son John Dyer at the helm, the business continues to grow and evolve with new itineraries continually added to the offering. With the launch of world-class golf courses in Tasmania in recent years, Air Adventure is not only flying guests to tour this beautiful apple-isle but also to play these incredible courses. Being spread across different corners of Tassie, reaching these courses can be a challenge, but the direct flights Air Adventure Golf Tours offer has made traveling to these top courses much easier and golfing guests can now experience all four courses over a four-day period. The four-day tour enables guests to play Cape Wickham, Barnbougle Dunes, Barnbougle Lost Farm and Ocean Dunes golf courses; all four being recently rated among Australia’s top golf courses. “These courses are absolutely magnificent and are a must-play for any level golfer” said John Dyer, Managing Director of Air Adventure Golf Tours.

Air Adventure’s private charter flights are coupled with seamless transfers, ensuring minimal time in transit and maximum time on the greens. In fact, King Island is only a 35-minute flight from Essendon Airport, and Barnbougle Airfield a 45-minute flight from Essendon. Therefore, in the time it takes to just check-in at the major domestic airports, Air Adventure golfers will already be lining up their first shot at any of these top Australian courses. “Our golfing tours have received such fantastic feedback from clients over the past year,” said John Dyer. “Particularly as guests are able to avoid airport queues and rigid departure times. They also love that everything is arranged for them, from their flights to transfers, tee-off times and accommodation.” If you are after a golfing trip above all others, this 4-day Top of the Chart’s golf tour is something you simply can’t go past. Tee off on a ‘Bucket List’ cruise Korte’s Resort gateway to CQ golf Your ‘bucket list’ courses like St Andrews are within reach via a great golf cruise

A

ll golfers—whether it be the casual player who dusts off the clubs a handful of times a year, right the way through to the hard-core fairway fanatic— have a golfing bucket list. This list might include things like hitting a 300-yard drive, getting a hole-in-one or simply breaking 80 for the first time. Of course, like anything in life, it’s different strokes for different folks when it comes to golf but one thing that is guaranteed to be on all golfers’ bucket list is a course or two that fall into the “must play before you die” category. Whether you’re a lover of the game and its history—and your golfing Holy Grail is visiting St Andrews—or if spectacular scenery is more your thing and you’re desperate to have a crack at the likes of the mind-boggling beautiful Pebble Beach, there are certain courses that are a must play. Travelrite International have two stand-out golf tours in 2018 which will help you tick off golf courses on your bucket list. The cruise along the Western seaboard of

the U.S. includes U.S. Open and Ryder Cup Courses and the luxury cruise around the British Isles which stops off at links that form the folklore of golf. The California Dreaming Golf Cruise, departing April 2018 includes golf at toprated courses like at Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines, Harding Park, Spyglass Hill, Spanish Bay, Pasatiempo, Pelican Hill, Sandpiper and Bajamar. Alternately, why not try the Legendary Links of Britain Cruise. Departing August 2018, golfers will play at Turnberry Ailsa, Royal Portrush, Portmarnock, Royal Lytham and St.Annes, St. Andrews Jubilee, Royal Cinque Ports, Princes, Royal Guernsey, Cork. rendsetter Travel & Cruise Centre is promoting two luxury Ireland and United Kingdom golf cruises for 2018. In contrast with the traditional fly drive tours around Ireland and the United Kingdom, with frequent moving from hotel to hotel, on a Trendsetter Travel Golf Cruise holiday you unpack only once. And in the summer and autumn of 2018 you can enjoy either (or both!) of two relaxed cruises where you can play golf in leisurely style at one great course after another. Leave the driving to someone else, in this case the Captain, most often while you sleep after an enjoyable day of golf. Consistent with Trendsetter’s policy of only scheduling its golf tours on small

luxury ships, both tours are on Oceania’s 684 passenger ship Nautica. In June 2018, Trendsetter offers a 13-night circumnavigation of Ireland, starting and finishing in Dublin. Pre-cruise there are two nights spent at Carton House Golf Resort and post cruise one night in a 4/5 star Dublin hotel. In between, there are 10 nights on board Nautica with golf featured on each of the nine port days. And what a wonderful array of courses, including three of the best 100 golf courses in the world: Royal County Down, Royal Liverpool and The European Club. The golf and cruise package starts from A$10,570 pp for a golfer and A$6,570 pp for a non golfing partner – both twin share. More: www.trendsettertravel.com.au/GC5

Pre-cruise there are two nights at Meon Valley Marriott Golf Resort, 25-minutes drive from your embarkation point. The cruise is for 12 nights and includes nine port visits, the most notable being Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Belfast and Dublin. Nine games of golf are offered including four from the 100 best ranked courses in the world. Again, the golf and cruise package has a very reasonable lead in price of A$10,960 pp for a golfer and A$7,835 pp for a non golfing partner – both twin share. More: www.trendsettertravel.com.au/GC6

golf tour packages

A typical golf day starts with a relaxed breakfast, a coach transfer of less than 40 minutes to the golf course, time to warm up before tee off, a fun round whether walking or carting, followed by daily prizes in the club rooms over a convivial drink with your playing partners. On most days, there will be time for sightseeing in addition to the golf. Camaraderie is guaranteed, as is having an instant group of friends to ensure you enjoy your cruise even more, be that for cocktails in the evening or sharing dinner on a particular night. Furthermore, if your partner is not a golfer, each port promises an array of exciting shore excursions to ensure an equally enjoyable cruise experience. If this is too much golf or you want to spend more time with your non-golfing partner, do not fret as you can choose as little or as much golf as fits your preference – all with an equitable price adjustment. While a guest on board Oceania pays for alcoholic drinks on consumption (drinks packages are available), each cabin receives an on-board credit of US$600 to help defer these and other non-inclusive costs. A cruise onboard Oceania is inclusive of wifi, gratuities and meals (other than modest surcharges for certain of the specialty restaurants). Thailand on the rise as golfing hub

Golf tourism operators from around the world came to Khao Yai to join the Thailand Golf Travel Mart 2017.

W

hile traditionally known for its amazing scenery, friendly people and wonderful heritage, the Kingdom of Thailand is now becoming a booming destination for golfers. Thai golf courses and destinations have recently achieved international recognition, with the resort towns of Pattaya and Hua Hin voted as the Golf Destination of the Year for Asia and Australasia by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) in 2012 and 2014. Likewise, Chiang Mai was voted the Golf Destination of the Year for Asia and Australasia 2017. So it’s safe to say that Thailand is becoming a hot spot for golf tourism. Building upon this growing reputation, in July, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) hosted the annual Thailand Golf Travel Mart (TGTM) 2017. Held in the stunning environs of Khao Yai, a World Heritage Site, the event saw golf tour operators and buyers from key

international markets meet with suppliers and golf course owners from across Thailand. Mr. Tanes, Petsuwan, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing (Europe, Africa, Middle East and Americas) said, “Golf is big business in Thailand thanks to the amazing courses around the country that show off our attractive scenery while offering world-class amenities and famously friendly Thai caddies. This event has helped strengthen Thailand’s position as a leading golf destination while attracting new golfers to play while enjoying the legendary Thai hospitality and unique local experiences.” The aim of the TGTM 2017 was to promote Thailand as a world-class golf destination and show how the kingdom’s courses and tour operators are set up to cater to golf tourists. The event has also helped create new opportunities for Thai golf business operators allowing them to promote their services to vital foreign markets.

More than 150 buyers from 32 countries signed up to attend the TGTM 2017. A total of 95 local sellers representing Thai golf courses, tour operators, hotels and travel agents attended, as well as 48 members of the overseas media. A highlight of the TGTM 2017 was the networking golf tournament, played across three quality Khao Yai courses; the Bonanza Golf Club; The Rancho Charnvee Golf Country Club, and the Mountain Creek Golf Resort. Australian Steve Wylie, owner of Golf & Leisure Getaways, took top honours in the field at Rancho Charnvee, playing alongside Inside Golf’s Richard Fellner and Simon Cummins of Golf Tourism Australia. “The TGTM 2017 is a great opportunity for Thailand’s golf industry to show the world why Thailand is such an amazing golfing nation. But it also represents the chance to promote other attractions in Amazing Thailand; such as, our rich heritage, spirit of hospitality and unique culture,” Mr. Tanes concluded.

HERE is charm that belongs only to RACV Royal Pines Resort.

It’s a marvellous place to spend a day or two – a week even. While some resorts are off-the-beatentrack and hard to find, RACV Royal Pines Resort is there for all to see, dominating the skyline as you approach the Gold Coast suburb of Benowa along NerangBroadbeach Road. You can’t miss the resort’s tall triangularshaped building overlooking the Gold Coast. Like a magnet – it draws in golfers, romantic couples and families keen on soaking up the wide range of activities the resort has to offer. The first-class resort, which features new two-bedroom suites, is just a short distance from the bone-white sandy beaches of Surfers Paradise and the lush beauty of the Gold Coast Hinterland. sensible choices before teeing off says the resort’s Manager – Golf, Sport and Leisure David Hogben.

If you are here to play golf and arrive early, slip into the conveniently located Tees Clubhouse for a coffee, cold drink and a bite to eat before warming up at the magnificent driving range and short-game practice facility.

He told Inside Golf golfers seeking an enjoyable round needed to choose a tee block that suits their ability.

The resort has a strong connection to golf courtesy of hosting the Australian PGA Championship each year as well as a number of top amateur events including the Queensland Mid-Amateur as well as national and state seniors and veterans’ tournaments. It seems everyone wants a piece of RACV Royal Pines Resort and for good reason. Even Masters champion Sergio Garcia can’t wait to visit the resort to play in the Australian PGA starting November 30. The Spaniard said he was looking forward to challenge. The championship qualities and classic feel of the golf course is the work of renowned golf course architect Graham Marsh. Few places are more delightful to play, but first-time visiting golfers must make

“The par-3s are different and interesting while the par-5s offer good scoring chances if you are smart with your approach shots. “The golfing public are taking up the challenge and loving it.

PGA professional Mark Gibson, who runs his Exceptional Golf teaching academy at the resort, endorsed his sage advice.

“A lot of golfers are walking off the 18th green and booking another round, which is a clear indication how good it is.”

“Don’t let your ego cloud your judgement,” Gibbo said.

Graham Marsh’s design philosophy is to give pleasure to all golfers – professionals and amateurs alike.

“There are five sets of tees and if you pick the right coloured tees to suit your ability/handicap it is very enjoyable.” Men can choose to play off the black (6734m), blue (6225m), white (5870m) and yellow (5538m) while the women play off the red tees (5111m) or they can challenge themselves off the yellow tees. “It’s a thinking golfer’s course and definitely rewards good shots,” Gibson said. “The quality of feature shaping is excellent and Graham Marsh has designed a layout to test all golfers. “The mounding is brilliant for visually testing the player and the green surrounds are challenging.

“The most important aspect of golf is design and that is to create a golf course that can actually challenge the very best players but at the same time provide an opportunity for the average player to have fun,” he said. “What I have tried to do with this golf course is to make it a thinking person’s golf course and I have tried to make it a shot-maker’s golf course and largely we have done that.” The golf course is definitely more challenging than the original design, which had more of a resort-style feel to it. The first two holes, a par-4 and a par-3, are demanding.

FACT FILE Accommodation at RACV Royal Pines Resort comprises 333 luxury rooms including a mixture of king and twin rooms, corner spa suites, executive suites, one Torquay suite and two-bedroom family suites. Family suites features have the luxury of a second bathroom, fullsized kitchenette and dining and lounge area. Put yourself in the picture. After that, the course settles down and flows into a nice pattern with one or two more tough holes before reaching the short par-4 eighth (index 16) and shortpar-5 ninth (index 12). That gives golfers a break before heading into the back nine. The course ends with four absorbing holes – the par-5 15th (index 9), followed by a shortish par-3 (index 17), a shortish par-4 (350m blue and 319m white) with out of bounds left and the 18th (index 10), which stretches to 416m and 399m from the blue and white tees respectively. Marsh said he wanted strong finishing holes and he has achieved that. “You really have to work hard on concentration and shot-by-shot play,” he said.

“The tee shot on 17, which is now 40m longer, is demanding whereas before players were taking irons from the tee. That’s not testing a player. “Now players will have to make a decision about what club they use from the tee and it will have to be more than a long iron. “Again, the 18th (index 1) is all about getting the ball on the fairway.” If you miss the large, raised, undulating green left, right or over the back, you will have your challenges making par or bogey. Final reminder: When you step up to the first tee, remember to heed Graham Marsh and Mark Gibson’s advice. “It’s a thinking golfer’s golf course.”

“The par-5 15th is reachable in two, but if you make a slight error you can pay a severe price. On the other hand, you can make eagle so it’s potentially a two-shot swing.

Now tee up your ball and enjoy the challenging must-play layout where eye-catching bunkering, water hazards, swales and mounds and some devilish greens await.

“Play a loose shot at 16 and you’ll make bogey. Play a good shot and you can make birdie.

They are a constant reminder to think before launching into the next tee or approach shot. Enjoy!
