Whether you choose the Hunter Valley, Newcastle or Port Stephens, you will have hit on a region rich in golfing treasures. Each region can boast numerous top-quality golf courses and venues and over the next few pages we feature a selection of the finest in these areas. For golfers who are easily distracted, there are magnificent beaches and wineries and mountains further inland. There’s plenty to see and do, so take your time to explore and make sure you acquaint yourself with the locals, who are always friendly and go out of their way to make your golfing holiday worthwhile. There’s also a wide selection of comfortable accommodation. The entire region really is a onestop golfing playground. So, what are you waiting for; isn’t it time to get acquainted, or re-acquainted, with some terrific layouts in New South Wales?

Cessnock Golf Club

CESSNOCK GOLF CLUB DESIGNED by the legendary Jack Newton, Cessnock Golf Course is located on the doorstep of the Hunter Valley vineyards and offers something for everyone. Playing off the black tees, low handicappers rarely come in more than one or two under. The fairways are like carpet and the greens the most challenging in the Hunter. That doesn’t deter the veterans who fill the course every Thursday morning playing off the white tees. Lady members are enjoying

the newly-developed ladies tees and are beginning to grow in numbers. Social groups are welcome and Cessnock offers several incentives that will ensure they enjoy their stay and return for more. The Club is now able to offer Stay and Play packages from $85 per person per day. After your round, , enjoy a meal from the bistro, cold drinks and gaming room in the air conditioned. The many TV screens have a large range of Foxtel and free-toair channels.

A visit to the Cessnock Golf Club is one that you will not forget. Non-resident membership packages are available at attractive prices. Conveniently located at the gateway to the vineyards, Cessnock Golf Club is a great option for a game.

Belmont Golf Club

BELMONT GOLF CLUB BELMONT is a popular, friendly and welcoming club, located on the southern fringe of Newcastle, just an hour and half drive from Sydney. It is an easywalking links course with spectacular ocean views. Belmont is a championship course that can be enjoyed by golfers of all levels. Constructed on pure sand, Belmont is the best “all weather” course in the area. Over the years, the club has continued to make improvements to the golf course with recent renovations including strategically-placed water features and bunkers which enhance both the aesthetic appeal and playability of the course in all weather conditions. With elevated tees designed to take advantage of the natural beachfront location and vistas, golfers require near-perfect tee shots along the beachside holes to avoid the danger in the form of dunes and shrubbery protecting the fairways. The par-5 16th hole is the signature hole of the course with magnificent views from

Bistro 801 has introduced a new menu and is now open for lunch 7 days a week and dinner from Wednesday to Saturday. Easts Leisure and Golf Club

Easts Leisure and Golf Club NESTLED in the heart of the beautiful Hunter Valley, Easts Leisure and Golf provides the perfect setting for golfers of all levels. The course is centrally located and within easy reach of the Hunter Valley Vineyards, Newcastle and Port Stephens, making it a must see on your next golfing holiday. The course is Australia’s fourteentholdest, having been established on the 12th June 1899, with golf still played on the original site. Whilst the course has been extensively developed over the past 100 years, the club has still retained its rich history with each hole telling a story. Water hazards are in play on eight of the tree-lined holes and a strategicallyplaced dam on the 2nd will worry some players. The par-3 13th is well-known

with locals, with players needing to place their shot on an undulating green over a former quarry. The recent additions of golf cart paths and architecturally designed greens and bunkers, add to give the course a real resort style feel. The modern clubhouse and new The Valley Restaurant and Fairways Function Centre make Easts a destination befitting its Hunter Valley location. Nelson Bay Golf Club

Nelson Bay Golf Club Nelson Bay Golf Club has the only 27-hole golf course in Port Stephens and the Hunter Valley, and is one of the most popular golf destinations in NSW. Located only five minutes’ walk from the CBD of Nelson Bay and stunning waterways of Port Stephens, it has accommodation next door, making this course the perfect destination for the golfer and anyone accompanying them. The club experienced a devastating fire in September 2015 and is about to open their $10million clubhouse--which have furiously worked on rebuilding for the past two years--on Thursday, 3rd August. This purpose-built clubhouse boasts a number of new facilities opening up opportunities for the club to expand into other business streams more effectively than before; such as conferences,

weddings, corporate golf days, ticketed events and the international visitor market. The clubhouse is set out perfectly for the member and visitor to relax and enjoy entertainment after a round of golf with a main bar, sports bar, indoor/ outdoor gaming, café and lounge, Bluewater Grill Restaurant, kids room, kangaroo tours and full entertainment schedule appealing to all age groups and demographics. A fully-stocked proshop with beautiful views over the course and fleet of 40 new carts makes life a lot easier for the PGA certified Moses brothers, professionals who have stood by the club through these trying times. It will be a welcome relief from the demountable building they have called home since the fire.

Ace of Clubs a hit on

NSW South Coast

S

unny and mild winter conditions on the New South Wales Far South Coast provided an ideal setting for the 21st Annual Ace of Clubs Tournament. This year’s entries came from 255 individual players representing 64 Clubs from across Australia. The event was played on four of the Sapphire Coast’s best golf courses; Bega CC, Eden Gardens CC, Pambula-Merimbula GC, and Tura Beach CC.

Carlene Ramsay & Rick Horwood

More than 1000 rounds of golf were played across the 72hole competition. The tournament featured daily individual Stableford events at each of the four courses. Scores from the daily events tallied up to finalise the overall total points for the 72 holes The King of Clubs was Rick Horwood (Medway GC), playing off a handicap of 12, who won the tournament with an overall total of 143 points, with individual wins at Eden and Tura. Runner-up was Chris Biffin, also from Medway Golf Club with a total score of 140 points on a countback from Brad Tepper from Yowani Golf Club. For the Queen of Clubs, Carlene Ramsay (PambulaMerimbula GC), playing off 10 produced an overall total of 124 points with an individual win at Tura Beach Country Club on the Thursday final round. Ramsay was one point ahead of the runner-up Robyn Whitehead of Beverley Park Golf Club with 123 points. A feature of this year’s tournament was the introduction of a Teams Event which was won by the Yowani Golf Club team

of Brad Tepper, Ken Norris, Geoff Strang and David Harris with a combined total of 508 points on a countback from the Medway Team of Rick Horwood, Chris Biffin, Stephen Buckley and Chris Jamieson. To conclude this year’s Ace of Clubs event, the traditional two-person Ambrose was played on the Friday. Robert Irvine from Sussex Inlet Golf Club produced a hole-in-one on the 10th at Eden while Judith Braden from Peninsula Golf Club hit a hole-in-one on the 11th at Pambula-Merimbula. Australians “Teeing-Up” golf tours in droves AUSTRALIANS’ passion for attending live major sporting events no matter how far away they need to travel is on the increase, with 50% of Teed-Up Golf Tours’ 2018 packages already sold out, 10 months ahead of the 2018 tour (30 March – 9 April 2018). Never before have tours sold out this quickly and demonstrate Australians’ passion for being a part of this unique golfing tournament. Back in April, Teed Up hosted their 18th fully escorted tour to The US Masters, where they hosted Australians who travelled to Augusta to be spectators at The Masters and to also have the opportunity to play a few rounds of golf including an opportunity to play at Pinehurst No 2 Golf Course. Teed-Up’s guest numbers for international Golfing Tournaments has grown over the last couple of years because Australians will make the effort to travel afar to be a spectator at world-class sporting events. “For many keen golfers, to be able to attend The US Masters is an absolute bucket list moment so it is crucial that our clients have the very best service and experience throughout the duration of the tour,” explains said Hendren, Teed-Up’s Managing Director. A staunch supporter of the tri-sanctioned ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, European Tour and Asian Tour tournament held in his home country, Singh is delighted to once again be playing the Fiji International. “Playing in the Fiji International each year is important to me and I always work my schedule to ensure I can come home,” said Singh. “I really enjoy playing in front of a home crowd, which is something I did not have the opportunity to do before the Fiji International. Everyone welcomes me so warmly

and shows me so much support yet is respectful of my preparations, Fijian fans are great.” Singh is a wonderful ambassador for Fiji overseas and is warmly welcomed home each year for the Fiji International. “Fiji continues to build capacity to host world-class sporting events and the Fiji International is a pinnacle example of how the Fijian hospitality can provide a unique element to these events,” said the Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Honourable Faiyaz Siddiq Koya. “Vijay’s continued support of the Fiji International boosts our position and draws further attention to our sporting prowess as a nation.” This year will be even more important to Singh, who has

To still be in contention at PGA TOUR events and winning Champions Tour events is a great testament to his skill, which is admired around the world but particularly in Fiji,” said Gavin Kirkman, CEO of the PGA of Australia, which oversees the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia. “But I believe his redevelopment of Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course will highlight his design skills. Avia ataste of France luxury Ryder Cup River Cruise T

rendsetter Travel and Cruise Centre has announced a luxury Paris and Normandy golf cruise which includes attendance at the final two days of the Ryder Cup, played at Le Golf National from Friday 28 September to Sunday 30 September 2018. The Saturday will see the morning foursomes and the afternoon the four ball matches. The Ryder Cup is played every two years, alternating either side of the Atlantic. However, this is only the 2nd time it has been played on mainland Europe. Le Golf National, where the French Golf Open was played in July 2017, is only a 30-minute drive from where the tour’s luxury river ship will berth in Paris during the final two days of the Ryder Cup. This is a major plus as, with traffic, it would likely take around 90 minutes to drive from the centre of Paris where most hotels are located. After 7 nights on board Uniworld’s boutique 128 guest ship S.S. Joie de Vivre, and immediately following the completion of the Ryder Cup, the tour will transfer to the luxurious Relais & Chateau property, Auberge du Jeu de Palme, Chantilly for a three-night stay with two games of golf. Uniworld, a leader in luxury river cruising, is regularly rated the world’s

Golf will include playing the spectacularly scenic Golf d’Etretat and the spectacular Harry Colt (of Pine Valley fame) designed Golf de Saint Germain – ranked 6th in France and venue for nine French Golf Opens. Post Ryder Cup in Chantilly, golf includes both 18-hole courses at Golf de Chantilly. The Tom Simpson designed Vineuil course has held numerous French Opens and is ranked # 3 in France.
