Playing World Masters: lessons learnt from a die-hard fan (Warning: Highly Addictive ) Sylvie Danoy

E

ach year for the past 21 years, golfers from all over Australia and international visitors have converged on the Gold Coast for a week-long celebration of golf and entertainment. These golfers wait in anticipation for the release of the tournament so they can secure their spot in the hotly-contested World Masters Golf Championship during October.

Recently, one of the die-hard tournament goers popped into our office just to say hello. As a Go Golfing fan, he rocked up proudly sporting a Go Golfing polo shirt. He has a great collection of those and conducts all his business meetings in one. He says it’s “good business Karma”. Daryn started with Go Golfing tournaments in 2010. He would have made it earlier but there was a hitch. When he first read about the World Masters he was still

4

a youngster by World Masters standards (you have to be 35 years of age to play). He remembers reading an article about this amateur golf tournament on the Gold Coast that had all the bells and whistles usually reserved for professional golfers. He had to curb his enthusiasm until 2010 to register for his first Gold Coast World Masters and thought, “At last! This is going to be brilliant.” Daryn was driven by his expectations of winning the tournament. At that stage he had a high handicap and started playing in the C grade. Winning was his focus. He’d practice at the driving range before and after each round. That’s all he did all week – practice and play. So, he was gutted when he finished pretty much towards the bottom of the field. He spent his first three World Masters trying to compete hard and score well but failed to play anywhere near his handicap. So, he started to think: “Is this event for me?” But his answer was clear: “I love my

golf and competing, I get to play four or five of the awesome Gold Coast resort courses, meet people from all over, so, yes, it is for me!” 2014 was the turning point for Daryn. He realised he was doing it for the wrong reasons. His focus had been on winning, spending his time and energy trying to kill it and have great scores instead of just going out there and simply enjoying his game of golf. “I made friends over the previous years but this was the year that I said just relax, have a few drinks, play and, who cares whether you come first or last.” Of course, that was the year he finished runner-up of his B grade division. “To be honest, being on stage as a runner-up was great, but it was just a bonus. I went home with my trophy and my new GPS watch. It was nice and this event does have fantastic prizes, but my focus now is so different. It’s about friends, playing great courses, the social events and activities and the food is pretty good too.”

“I’ve met some awesome people over the years and really look forward to catching up with them. When you go to the 19th hole, organised at the end of each competition day, you get to meet lots of people. I don’t mean just golfers your own age. I’ve chatted and laughed with people who are way older than me and that don’t even play in my age division. The 19th hole is great for this!” After going through some personal challenges, the friends he’s made at the events are getting him to travel the world playing in the other Go Golfing tournaments. A new friendship forged at the Wrest Point Masters in Hobart took him to the Centara World Masters in Thailand last year. Daryn was paired with Gwen and Jen for the Ambrose round at last year’s Gold Coast Masters and that chance meeting is now taking him on another golfing adventure. “These two were so much fun. There were jokes flying and I learnt a

whole sub-culture of golfing vernacular. They had an expression to describe every bad shot! The girls convinced me the Barnbougle tournament and courses are magic and so I am now looking forward to playing that event and seeing the girls in Barnbougle.” The 2017 Ladbrokes World Masters on the Gold Coast will run from 8-13 October and is open to male and female golfers aged 35 and over. Golfers enjoy a professional tournament experience as well as nightly social and entertainment events headlined by a welcome dinner featuring comedy and a gala presentation dinner. There’s over $100,000 in prizes which must be won. Entries are now open. Bali Golf Club and a tremendous honor for the entire team,” said Guy Owen – General Manager of Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort. “Winning these accolades is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to sustain and pursue excellence in service and world-class golfer experiences offered.” With five ocean-side holes, three cliffto-cliff tee shots and eight holes sculpted into the terraced rice field, the 18-hole world class Greg Norman-designed Nirwana Bali Golf Club is renowned for its natural setting. A total of 19 original Balinese Hindu Temples scattered throughout the course alongside breath-

taking expanses of rice paddies encircling the ground outline the courses cultural and spiritual connection. The course combines a great test of golf with the natural flora and fauna of the island. The picturesque 7th hole overlooks the Indian Ocean and the Tanah Lot temple and is one of the most photographed spots in Bali. Leadbetter Golf Academy at Bali National

B

ali has always been a popular, sundrenched holiday destination, but it’s also a great golfing haven for golfers who enjoy playing a world-class golf course.

Now there is another reason to visit Bali National Golf Resort – the Leadbetter Golf Academy. It’s a well-known fact Bali National is a “must-play” golf course and now golfers have the opportunity to hone their skills under the watchful eye of highly-skilled and motivated teaching staff at the Leadbetter Golf Academy. “We are highly motivated to establish a first-class golf academy in Bali, not only to help individual golfers, but also to generally raise the level of golf in Indonesia,” LGA Master and Director of Leadbetter Golf Academy Asia Philippe De Busschere said. Bali National Golf Resort general manager Mark Holland said the resort was proud to have Leadbetter Golf Academy at Bali National. “It is in line with one of our goals to develop the quality of golf in Indonesia by supporting all aspiring golfers, especially juniors,” he said. “We are honoured that Leadbetter Golf Academy choose Bali National as their location in Bali because the Leadbetter Golf Academy only selects premier clubs in each country to associate with.” The Leadbetter Golf Academy (Bali) caters for juniors, men and women as well as

group clinics, private lessons and playing lessons. At all times the certified Leadbetter Academy instructor uses the latest technology including Boditrak, Gasp software, Flightscope and the famous Leadbetter exercises and training aids. Joseph Glynn, a qualified PGA professional and certified David Leadbetter instructor, heads up the LGA team in Bali. The academy’s director honed his teaching skills at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club, one of the most prestigious golf clubs in Ireland and host to the 2016 Curtis Cup. He moves to Bali from Leadbetter Golf Academy in Jakarta. David Leadbetter Golf Academies around the globe adhere strictly to the company’s commitment to excellence, offering golfers of all ages and skill levels the resources to improve their games under the tutelage of the world’s finest instructors at the world’s finest training facilities.

THE GOLF COURSE: Bali National is a breathtaking experience that combines the rugged natural beauty of Bali with the landscape of a championship golf course. The scenic 6552m championship layout features three distinctive environmental settings and certainly has that “wow factor”. Creeks, canyons, cascading waterfalls, verdant native vegetation and waste bunkers running from tee to green can all come into play if you are slightly off your game. Still, the nice thing about the course is you don’t lose too many golf balls courtesy of the layout’s generous fairways. There are so many good holes on this golf course including the par-4 ninth. It’s a terrific hole, which has a rock wall virtually ringing the green. A tree, left-centre in the fairway, stands guard while water and a large bunker protect the green.

You must play this fabulous course and relax in its equally attractive Balinese yet ultra-modern clubhouse with wellappointed locker rooms, pro shop, Golfers’ Restaurant and Terrace overlooking the 18th green. After a round, it’s the ideal spot for a leisurely lunch. The award-winning Bali National Golf Resort – located at Nusa Dua in the centre of Bali’s hotel, resort and shopping precinct – is just 20 minutes from the airport. RACV Royal Pines Resort RACV Royal Pines Resort, boasting 27 challenging holes of golf, is Australia’s Home of Championship Golf. Set against a lush background along the Nerang River, RACV Royal Pines resort is located between the Gold Coast’s most famous beaches and the hinterland to the west. Opened in 1990, Royal Pines was originally designed by Japanese course architect Tomojiro Maruyama. As host of the Australian PGA Championship, the championship course has undergone a complete re-design by renowned golf course architect, Graham Marsh. The renovations have seen greens, surrounds, landing area, and bunkers replaced to bring the course up to championship standards while also retaining its appeal to cater for golfers of all abilities. The Green and Gold championship combination hosted the PGA and proved to be a challenge to even the most astute professional golfers. From the championship tees it measures 6,690m, with six par-4s that measure more than 400m, four par-5s that are over 500m long and a 201m par-3. It all adds up to a tough series of holes when factoring in the parade of bunkers that come into play on most holes, and the far-reaching swales surrounding a slew of elevated greens. The Gold combination course is comprised of the Gold nine and the Blue nine. The blue nine, located on

Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club the western side of Ross Street, proves that shorter is not always easier in golf, as it has its own distinctive challenges. While the longer hitters may find one or two par 4s reachable from the tee, they are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers, meaning even the slightest miss off the tee will likely find you in trouble. The challenge on this nine is to play smart. RACV Royal Pines is where the players come to play, and where fervent golfers can experience a challenging layout, combined with a 5-star environment. With tight, tree-lined fairways and undulating greens, each nine-hole course has its own distinctive challenges, requiring a unique skill set in order to have a successful round. Afterwards, enjoy a casual meal and cold beverage on Tee’s lower terrace, overlooking the first 10th holes of the tournament course. RACV Royal Pines Resort’s world-class practice facilities are complemented by

teaching expertise from Mark Gibson’s Exceptional Golf coaching professionals. With a family-friendly environment, there are clinics for every age and every level of player. Combined with the five tennis courts, two of which are the Gold Coast’s only undercover courts, a gymnasium, spa and brand-new water park, RACV Royal Pines Resort offers five-star facilities including conference and accommodation facilities that are second to none. Shoalhaven Heads

Bermagui Country Club

Bermagui Country Club Situated in the heart of Bermagui, and featuring fabulous views of the seaside town of Bermagui, Horseshoe Bay and Mount Dromedary, the 18-hole championship golf course at Bermagui Country Club is truly a beauty. Their fairways are lush and most are lined by a variety of beautiful native trees. But it’s also a solid challenge, with long par 4s (plenty in the 370-400 metre range) with sloping fairways and a number of blind shots to the excellent greens. There are also a number of dogleg holes to add to the challenge. Water also features prominently on a number of holes, including the 164m 15th, where the fairway is a lake. The 6,085m, par-72 course is a serious walk with plenty of hills. That said, you will really enjoy this high-quality challenging course, the beautiful views and abundant bird life. Once you play its pristine fairways and smooth, true greens, you’ll wonder why you may not have heard of Bermagui before. Over the years it has hosted many pro-ams, including the ALPG Players Championship (won by Dame Laura Davies) and the NSW Seniors

Championship. With ample water available, the course is maintained in tournament condition all year round. The Clubhouse and facilities at Bermagui feature all the amenities you need, including a restaurant open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner, kids room in the restaurant, sports bar, a spacious bbq area and built-in bar, pool tables and dart boards, courtesy bus, EFTPOS/ATM and more. Shoalhaven Heads Shoalhaven Heads is a stunning Par71 18-hole golf course next to the ocean and designed for players of all levels. The large undulating greens are spectacular, bunkering is perfectly placed and the fairways always provide a pure hitting surface.

A feature of the course is the collection of short par-4s. These are the types of holes that players of all levels love to play as they create “hero” and “bad luck” stories for reminiscing in the clubhouse afterwards. The club is also proud of its reputation as being primarily volunteer-based which engenders friendliness and visitors are made to feel very welcome. The clubhouse, with its lovely outdoor verandas overlooking the course is a great place to rest and relax after your round while listening to the sounds of the nearby surf. Home of the 2016 Illawarra Pennant Champions, Shoalhaven Heads is fast becoming a “must-play” course as word of mouth spreads about the magnificent oceanside links-style layout. It’s fair to say that during close to four decades of travelling the world he spent another vast chunk of his time at tournament venues and in hotel rooms, which left him little or no time for exploring and sightseeing. Now that he’s hung up the clubs from four-round tournament golf, he plans to make up for lost opportunities and has his sights firmly set on a number of undiscovered – and some familiar – destinations. One country he definitely wants to tick off his bucket list of travel destination is Egypt in northeast Africa. He also wants to return to South Africa and go in search of the Big Five – lion, elephant, leopard, rhinoceros and buffalo. Inside Golf recently caught up with Singapore-born Senior at Hope Island Resort where he happily answered a range of travel-related questions.

What is your favourite travel destination in Australia? The Great Barrier Reef.

What about overseas? New York – my wife loves New York. Another favourite was going to Canada one Christmas and having the family see snow for the first time. Is there a travel destination you would love to visit? Egypt. I have always said I’d be interested in archaeology – digging up things. I have been digging up courses for 40 years so I may as well dig up something else. Egypt has always fascinated me as has the Incas in South America. That’s what we are going to be doing. We are going to Egypt and also to Athens (Greece) to do a real historical tour. I hear you are a huge fan of South African novelist Wilbur Smith. Have you spent much time in Africa? Yes, Wilbur Smith is my favourite author. I have only been to South Africa once to play in the Nedbank Challenge (Sun City). We are going to go to South Africa with a couple of mates to play Leopard Creek golf course and a few other courses and go to Kruger National Park where there

are 120,000 animals. My wife June and I travelled the world for 40 years and never really got to see much. What’s the best food you’ve eaten while travelling? It has to be Japanese food. The food there is very good. I love fish and you don’t get any better than you do in Japan. You also enjoy fishing, don’t you? Yes. My aim is to do a bit of fishing now that I have more time. What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made while travelling? It was leaving our gear in the car after a tournament in Orlando (America). We were less than a kilometre from home and I said to June and the kids ‘let’s stop for lunch’. We stopped and had lunch and when we came out of the restaurant, there was virtually nothing left in the car. The only thing they didn’t take was my bag with the passports. My son’s bag with laptop, June’s Louis Vutton handbag and carry bag were gone with the laptops. The kids were devastated to lose all their gear. Best place you’ve ever stayed at? When it comes to golf, it has to be the Glen Eagles Hotel.

HATS OFF TO TRAVEL: Peter Senior has northeast Africa in his sights. Do you collect souvenirs? No, but my wife June does. What is your favourite country to play golf? Australia. What are your favourite golf courses around the world? Kingston Heath (Australia), Carnoustie (Scotland) and Pebble Beach (America).

Justine time for a round of golf Andrew Crockett

F

or many of us, the thought of being able to play golf every day and still have a job is merely a fantasy. Not so for 28 year-old Justine Belo who, along with her job as a flight attendant and coupled with her infectious passion for golf, finds herself playing golf around the world … every day. When not travelling abroad, Justine is a member of the beautiful Kiama Golf Club and plays and practices around the south coast of NSW and often in Sydney. Justine has a very keen eye with the camera and her Instagram account was what caught our eye. Justine also reminds us that passion and commitment are an elixir to success on the course, as she only took up the game a few months ago and is already breaking 80. “I fly long haul for work, so that gets me out and about a fair bit,” she says. “I love meeting new people, so I’ve been lucky enough to play some wonderful courses and get the opportunity to practice overseas as well as home, where I also get a lot of time off.’” We sat down with Justine, and got the story on this world-travelling golfer. How did you stumble into golf? “Funnily enough it was the last thing I had ever thought of taking up. After an unsuccessful afternoon trying to find surf, I wound up at the driving range for a laugh. I didn’t think I’d be even able to hit a ball, but funnily enough, I did. I booked myself in for a lesson the very next day and the rest is history. Six months later you can say I am very much addicted and in love with it. It’s crazy to see how much progress you

can achieve in such a short amount of time when you’re passionate about something. For me, being out in the fresh air and playing different courses is something I can’t get enough of, it’s just you and the course out there battling it off to see who can get the upper hand. I am happy to have broken 80 a couple times in the last month and hoping to get my strokes down slowly. “My home club is Kiama. I love the condition of our course, the greens are awesome and fairways are lush. Having some of the narrowest tree-lined fairways I’ve seen definitely gets you shooting straight and adds a challenge. We also have some great members and talented juniors, which is encouraging to see.” How many hours a week do you practice on average, and what are you currently working on? “I play every single day, generally, when I’m home. There are only a few days a month when I can’t play due to flying. But when I’m overseas I also try and fit in practice and a round, mainly in Abu Dhabi as the facilities and courses are great. I will hit about 100-200 balls at the range each day, putt for an hour or so, then hit 9 to 18 holes as well. I’ve been working on getting more release and extension in my swing, and working a lot on my putting. My short game seems to be going well lately and I love my irons and wedges. Which countries do you mostly travel to with your work? “I mostly travel to the U.S. and UAE. Los Angeles and Abu Dhabi acting like a second home the last five years. Abu Dhabi is by far the most culturally different I have been to thus far; they treat you like royalty

at golf courses there. You’ll have porters, carts fully stocked with drinks, snacks, tees, balls, cold towels - literally everything you’d need on the course. “Practicing with brand spanking new balls stacked in those little pyramids means you could hit endless balls all day, if the heat doesn’t get you first! Luckily ladies (and left handers like myself) ARE allowed in the clubhouse, and the cocktails and cold beers on tap are very much needed after a round there! You can play golf in Abu Dhabi and Dubai at night. That’s a winner in the summer when it’s 50 degrees Celsius during the day. “I recommend anyone en route to Europe to take a stopover in Abu Dhabi for a day or two and get a round in, you’ll be taking your bunker shots with wild gazelles prancing across the fairways, and dolphins cruising past while putting on some of the greens. Playing in the desert surrounded by palm trees, endless bunkers and the turquoise beach running alongside the fairway is something else. “The courses in Southern California are also amazing. Nothing beats teeing off at Torrey Pines with the Pacific Ocean on the horizon. Trump National Los Angeles is another spectacular course, yet again a challenging layout with the pacific breeze playing along the cliffs. On the other side of the spectrum, playing in the heart of the Canadian Rockies surrounded by giant peaks and pine tree-lined fairways is definitely something I recommend everyone tick off the bucket list! Just watch out for the bears, moose, and elk on course.” Have you met any other amateur golfers who are travelling the world and golfing?

“I’ve been lucky enough to meet a lot of really nice people through golf and my travels. Some are pros on tour, some amateurs, caddies, and juniors. We have so much new talent in Australia, you always bump into someone on a flight travelling back and forth to tournaments around the globe. With golf being such a worldwide sport for everyone, it’s actually amazing how many people you meet that have played courses you have, or know people you know. “Knowing people in the U.S. and Europe as well as home means there’s always someone up for a round, and getting to practice and play occasionally with touring pros really motivates me and pushes me to get better, I’m thankful for that. Sometimes I sit in LA having a quiet trip with golf channel on the TV in my hotel room and I’ll be like, “oh, I know that guy!” Networking and sharing the passion of the game with others has been great, it definitely adds a lot more courses and travel destinations to tick off the list that’s for sure!” Follow Justine on Instagram: www.instagram.com/justine_jb/ February 2017 | INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL

Say ‘Bula!’ to Fiji fun feeling that Fiji nurtures that makes it an ideal holiday destination for golfers with kids. Beyond resort living, there are so many activities and places for the family to visit.

Andrew Crockett

F

iji is a wonderful holiday destination, even for golfers. You instantly feel like you are on holiday as soon as you hop off the plane, as your body clock switches to ‘island time’. You are greeted at the airport to the sweet island music, played live on ukuleles, and native guitars as you walk through the newly refurbished Nadi International Airport with cries of “BULA” from the very friendly local people

of Fiji. Once outside and in the tropical warmth, you are soon to be at the beach and soaking in the sun and dreaming of where you will play golf tomorrow. Flying in from Brisbane (a comfortable three-hour flight), I couldn’t quite believe it as land came into view and we saw Fiji. I should say, we saw the ‘Fiji Islands’…there are hundreds of them; it is quite literally a pacific paradise. If you love the beach and the coastal lifestyle, you are probably already well-versed in Fiji and everything

it has to offer, but if not, well, there is so much on offer you will hard pressed to find time to do it all; sailing, scuba diving, fishing, surfing, snorkelling and all things coastal. Within 20 minutes of the airport is the port of Denarau, a central hub of fivestar restorts, hotels, a championship golf course and the gateway to ferries and seaplanes that can take you out to the other islands. There is plenty on offer for golfers with families; in fact it is the family

As a golfer, you don’t need more than a day in Fiji to wonder ‘how on Earth did Vijay Singh topple Tiger Woods as the World’s number one, growing up in these remote pacific islands?’ Fiji is an island chain in the middle of the ocean. ‘How did they get golf clubs here?’ you wonder. Or ‘Who designed the golf courses and how on Earth did a little boy from these islands become the world’s best?’ Now that is another story, but Vijay Singh’s influence on modern Fiji is terrific for golfers. His Natadola Bay Golf Course on the Coral Coast is the jewel in the crown for golf in Fiji.

Each year in August the Fiji International golf championship is played on the Natadola Bay golf course and the whole country celebrates golf. But as a spectator I have to say, the Fiji International isn’t just about golf. It is about family, culture and it is a bit of a party, an end of year celebration for those who make it. The Intercontinental Resort is where most people stay and it is 5 star luxury that will have you in a high level of comfort and approximately 5 minute’s drive from the golf course. The Intercontinental houses hundreds of rooms, villas and penthouses, several swimming pools, spas, four bars and three award-winning restaurants. Right on the beach, with surf out the front, The Intercontinental is so well equipped and beautiful that you can basically checkin and never leave, if that is the sort of holiday you want, The Intercontinental has everything you could hope for and more. Set on hundreds of acres, it is spacious, modern and vibrant.

The Fiji International golf event is a great time to visit Fiji with family, relax and perhaps play a bit of golf yourself. The Australian PGA do a fine job putting the tournament on and the golf course is an enjoyable walk with plenty of shade for spectators and activities for kids. During tournament week there are ample night happenings back at the resort and a great opportunity to feel part of the tournament week. The tournament is really embraced by the Fijian locals, even the President of Fiji attends the ceremonies and the elders put on a traditional Kava ceremony. Standing on the 6th tee at Natadola Bay with the coral reef on your left, volcanic rock formations on your right, waves crashing in the distance and the gentle local people fishing with rudimentary instruments – it is difficult to concentrate on the golf ball with the visual spectacular going on around you. Fiji is a golfing experience you will never forget. •

nnovative golf tour operator Golf & Gourmet is offering a great way to extend your enjoyment of Melbourne Cup Week by adding four days of golf, food and wine to one of Australia’s great celebrations.
