INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL | August 2016

G

olfers have been quick to rate the 2016 Centara World Masters Golf Tournament, Thailand, as the best ever. Playing in the championship for the first time, Victor Danko from Australia declared it was the best week of his life.

At 71 years of age, Victor, a member of Bayview Golf Club in Sydney, plays off a handicap of 10. He scored 136 points for the 4 rounds of Stableford competition to finish in second place in the 66+ A grade division.

“I have played lots of tournaments, but none better than this week. It will take some time for this smile to go away. I loved everything. The courses were so good, especially Banyan and Black Mountain. The caddies were spot on, took my golf to a new level, and the chatter between caddies and players was great fun. I have never felt better or more relaxed on a golf course and no doubt it helped my scores. The caddies found my ball even when I thought it was totally lost.” “I came here on my own but it was so friendly that I never felt like I was on my own. I played golf with amazing people from all over the world who I will definitely keep in touch with. Every night we were entertained and the free drinks were a bonus.” “The hotel (Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin) is just so beautiful and the staff treat you like royalty. It is just a 5-minute walk to the centre of town where you are spoilt for restaurants and bars. I had a massage most days for about $10 and everything is such great value.” “I don’t know exactly how many players were here this week, but I know it was more than 400 golfers from 23 countries

OF MY LIFE and we were all so spoilt. Go Golfing and Golfasian know how to look after golfers. It’s the little things like having buses taking me to and from the courses, having my golf clubs valeted everywhere I played, and having everything explained that made my holiday such a great holiday.” “This has been the best week of my life. I will be back every year.” The Centara World Masters Golf Championship is a week-long celebration of golf, social and entertainment events in the popular seaside resort town of Hua Hin. The event is open to all male and female golfers over the age of 35. Hua Hin is about 2.5 hours south of Bangkok. It was awarded Asia’s Best Golf Destination in 2014 and serves up a winning combination for tournament participants. Drought conditions in Thailand required organisers to change the host courses and reduce the field from 650 golfers in 2015 to a capacity of just 430 this year. Golfers played two rounds at Black Mountain, Asia’s number one ranked course, Banyan Resort and Sea Pines. Carts and caddies are included at all

courses. Each player has a caddy wearing a bib with their name and country flag. Centara Hotels & Resorts is the major sponsor. They have confirmed their involvement through to 2019. Most golfers stay at the ideally located Centara Grand Beach Resort and Villas. Established in the 1920s, the resort offers modern luxuries while retaining its bygone age of elegance.

Taking full advantage of Centara’s beachfront location, the opening night welcome dinner and gala presentation dinners are hosted around the resort pool with the beach and ocean as a stunning backdrop. Golfers gather in the evening for 19th Hole festivities to celebrate the daily winners. There is no shortage of fun and food with Thai nibblies and Chang beer. There’s more than US$30,000 in golf prizes and lucky prizes. Big winners were: Eric Butler (Australia) won a return trip to the 2017 Centara Masters; Irene Goh (Malaysia) won a trip to the 2016 Ladbrokes World Masters on the Gold Coast (Australia). Irene was also the champion for the ladies 60+ A grade. There were two holes in one at the tournament, both by Australians: Richard

Mittra (Beaconhills) scored a hole in one on the 17th at Banyan; Mark McDougall aced the 11th hole at Black Mountain. Sponsored by TaylorMade, Mark also received a bonus of a 30,000 Baht set of golf clubs. Tournament champions came from Australia, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Philippines, China, Ireland, Thailand and the United States. The Centara World Masters is co-hosted by Australian-based Go Golfing and Golfasian. In addition to Centara Hotels

and Resorts, TaylorMade, Coca-Cola, Chang and Tourism Authority of Thailand proudly contribute to the ongoing success of the tournament. The event raised 109,500 Baht for Jungle Aid, a charity providing a better future for displaced Thai children in remote communities. The 2017 Centara World Masters Golf Championship will be held from 11 to 17 June 2017. For complete event information and to book visit www.thailandworldmasters.com •

Fly to King Island & Barnbougle in style T

ravelling to golf tournaments by private jet has become very common practice for golf pros around the world with the likes of Jason Day, Jordan Speith and Rory McIlroy flying to and from events by private jet every week. Since the arrival of Barnbougle in Tasmania and, more recently, King Island, Australian golfers are now also travelling to their dream golfing destinations like Rock Stars in private charter aircraft. And they don’t have to have Rock Star salaries to afford it. In fact, chartering an aircraft for golf trips to Barnbougle and King Island has become an easy and affordable way to travel in style to golf trips. There are now various private charter aircraft operating in the Australian golf industry but not all are the same so some good questions to ask when selecting your aircraft are: Does the aircraft have turbine or piston engines? Turbines are higher performance, more reliable and

element of your golf trip for you including accommodation, dinner reservations, golf and all on ground transfers. Air Adventure even own their own bus on the ground in King Island and once safely landing the plane, their pilot (with minimum of 1000 hours) converts to the bus driver and acts as the group tour Rock Star treatment: Fly to guide doing transfers on the island King Island and Barnbougle everywhere from golf, dinner, the via your own chartered jet. therefore safer. Piston engines have many moving parts and are old technology.

Some new King Island/Tasmania trips centered around the new Cape Wickham and Ocean Dunes courses include the one or two-day tours which gives you the option of either a day trip with a full round of
golf, or overnight with two rounds of
golf plus accommodation. Prices are $595 per person (Day trip) or $880 per person (Overnight) and include airfares, golf, accommodation and pull cart and transfers to/from airport.

How many hours’ experience do the pilots have? Companies’ minimum hour requirements can vary greatly with some having just hundreds of hours and others over one thousand.

For golf tragics looking to add even more excitement to their trip, Air Adventure also have a three and four-day Barnbougle + King Island tour, which allows you to play three of world’s most remote, exciting and highestranking courses in one easy trip. This trip includes flying directly from the fairways at Barnbougle Lost Farm to King Island. Pricing starts at $1790 per person and includes your private charter flight, two nights’ accommodation, three rounds of golf and transfers. A four-day option with four rounds of golf is also available from $2075pp and has become the most popular option given you play three courses in the world top-40 plus Ocean Dunes which officially opens in September.

One airline that ticks all of these boxes is Air Adventure, a private charter golf tour specialist who operate two Cessna Conquest aircraft. Not only do they have the highest quality and fastest private charter aircraft operating in the golf industry, they organise every

Does the aircraft have a pressurised cabin? A pressurised cabin means you can fly above 10,000 feet and in most cases over the top of bad weather. This means far greater chance for a smooth flight instead of bouncing along under the clouds. How fast does the aircraft fly? For example, some aircraft take just 45 minutes to Barnbougle and others take an hour and a half.

Belmont Golf Club

Belmont is a popular, friendly and welcoming club, located on the southern fringe of Newcastle, just an hour and half drive from Sydney. It is an easy-walking links course with spectacular coastal views. Belmont is a championship course with challenges to suit players of all levels. Constructed on pure sand, Belmont is the best “all weather” course in the area. Over the years, the club has continued to make improvements to the golf course with recent renovations including strategically placed water features and bunkers which enhance both the aesthetic appeal and playability of the course in all weather conditions. Belmont has four challenging par-3s including the 155m fifth hole, with deep bunkers short right and long left it requires good club selection to an elevated green.

Because of its shape, the hole offers some challenging pin positions. The par-5 ninth is a testing hole of 482m off the white tees and requires a courageous tee shot because there’s water along the entire left side and new water and hazard features on the right. The second shot doesn’t get any easier with hazards left and right and the green, which has a hump in the middle, is protected by two bunkers on the right. The 15th hole is a 401m par-4 and has a new tee recently constructed on top of the dunes. The elevated tee is designed to take advantage of the natural beachfront location and vistas. Running parallel with the Pacific Ocean, it demands a near- perfect tee shot because there’s danger in the form of dunes on the left and shrubbery on both sides. The fast green is protected by two bunkers left and requires care to study the subtle slopes. The par-5 16th hole is the signature

Belmont Golf Club hole of the course with magnificent views from the green over the entire length of 9-Mile beach from Blacksmiths to Redhead. There are strategically-placed fairway bunkers left and right and the third shot is to an elevated green (30 metres from the Pacific Ocean), with subtle slopes protected by bunkers left and right. Membership is open in all categories, with no joining fees. Special rates for Intermediate and Juniors. Monday and Friday Social Golf Special - 18 holes for two people in a cart - $100. Easts Leisure and Golf Club

Easts Leisure and Golf Club Nestled in the heart of the beautiful Hunter Valley, Easts Leisure and Golf provides the perfect setting for golfers of all levels.

The Course at Easts is Australia’s fourteentholdest Golf Club, having been established on the 12th June 1899, with golf still played on the original site. The course has been extensively developed over the past 100 years, most notably after the Super Storm that hit the area in April 2015. Major damage to Greens, Bunkers and paths saw the need for complete re-builds and the course has benefitted from the project. Two new greens were constructed including the new 10th Green with its sandstone feature, and every bunker on the course rebuilt from scratch to give the course a true resort style feel.

Pacific Dunes

Pacific Dunes, ranked among Australia’s Top 100 courses, has a reputation for providing a unique golfing experience on its 18-hole championship golf course and is now complemented by its brand-new $3million Country Club. The course features two very distinct nines. Designed by renowned course architect James Wilcher, the layout uses strategic placement of bunker and water

hazards to create a golf course that is extremely playable to the average golfer, whilst still challenging to low handicappers. Offering some of the finest playing surfaces in Australia, Pacific Dunes should be on the itinerary for all golfers, when visiting Port Stephens. Purchase a Port Stephens ‘3 Play Pass’ and include Newcastle Golf Club and Nelson Bay Golf Club into your golfing getaway, for the heavily discounted price of $169 per person—a saving of up to $41. Pacific Dunes’ group golf coordinator and discounted green fees will ensure your social club or group of mates will enjoy a first-class experience each visit. The brand new kid’s course offers an exciting opportunity for under-18’s to play alongside mum and dad on their very own par-72 course, with complimentary green fees when playing with a full-paying adult. Pacific Dunes brand-new $3million Country Club opened in March this year, featuring a fully-stocked Golf Shop and Port Stephens’ newest dining and events destination, The Greenhouse; offering breakfast, lunch, dinner, bar and alfresco dining areas with views across the first and tenth tees. Located in the picturesque Port Stephens region on New South Wales’ lower north coast, Pacific Dunes is only 20 minutes to Nelson Bay, 30 minutes to Newcastle and less than two hour’s drive to Sydney, making the decision to become a member easy. When you become a golf member at Pacific Dunes you will receive unlimited golf

Pacific Dunes 7 days a week, preferred times and rates, honour board events, all whilst paying NO green fees at a premium golf club. The club’s corporate memberships are a great way for businesses to connect with their clients, colleagues and partners by providing both networking and incentive opportunities for your company. The staff are also happy to discuss how a package can be tailored for your specific requirements.

With 135-hectares of master planning, residents say living at Pacific Dunes is like permanently being on holidays. The benefits of living at Pacific Dunes go far beyond the world-class 18-hole course complete with pure bentgrass greens and Santa Ana Couch fairways. Residents enjoy the exclusive use of many onsite facilities including the 25m swimming pool, tennis courts, parks, gardens, BBQ area and

multiple walking trails throughout the secure, surrounding natural bushland. What are you waiting for? Nelson Bay GOLF CLUB

Nelson Bay, the only 27-hole layout in the Hunter Valley and one of the most popular golf destinations in NSW, has stared down its disastrous clubhouse fire in September to emerge smiling and successful. Not only has the club already set up a fully functional temporary clubhouse, complete with all facilities, the all-new modern replacement clubhouse is underway and will be finished in a year at an approximate cost of $10 million.

And this has been no small task, as Manager Trevor Harrison explains. “As a result of the fire, the club eventually will have to replace basically every item from paper clips to the clubhouse and everything in-between. We have been very fortunate that our Insurer, Ansvar, has settled the Material Damages Claim which covers the building and contents, which has allowed us to proceed with the construction of the new clubhouse.” With the splendid 27-hole course

unaffected by the fire and the enthusiasm of members and visiting golfers, there is more good news with the playing numbers (usually more than 70,000 a year) being exceeded in 2015-16. “Recently we reconciled our playing numbers for the year and our member and visitor rounds were ahead of last year’s budget, plus we had an increase in golf cart hires,” Harrison said. “We were lucky that we only lost three days play after the fire and the Board thanks

“And the Nelson Bay Ladies will host their famous Classic from September 12 – 15 where 150 golfers from across NSW play two stroke rounds and a four-person stableford teams event. Entry forms for all events can be downloaded from our website.” The Board has adopted a new Strategic Plan for the club and the goal is “to be the best golfing destination in regional NSW and to be a vibrant social hub for our local community”. With Harrison this month recording his 25th year in the Golf Club Management industry, it looks like he has another busy year ahead. A working (golf) holiday in Paradise S

pend a few hours on a Fiji Airways plane and you could land inside the ropes at a European Tour event in a tropical destination. Volunteering at the Fiji International has never sounded so good!

The newest tournament on the European Tour schedule, the Fiji International is now looking for 300 sports fans to volunteer at the prestigious tournament to be played from 6-9 October. Hosted at the picturesque Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course, which offers

views of the coral coast from 14 of the 18 holes, a volunteer’s office doesn’t get much better. It doesn’t matter what your experience, there is a volunteer role to suit everyone. From walking inside the ropes scoring for European Tour and ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia stars to sitting under a palm tree holding a “Quiet” sign as the players tee off, volunteering at the Fiji International is a unique experience. While volunteers are required to work a shift of four to six hours on all four days of the tournament there is plenty of time

for you to relax away from the course and experience some of the tropical hospitality Fiji is renowned for. There is no better place to unwind after your day volunteering at the Fiji International than at the tournaments Official Hotel; the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa. The luxury beach resort, which was voted in January as one of the top-10 luxury hotels in Fiji at the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards, neighbours the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course The resort provides services that go beyond the world-renowned Fijian warmth and hospitality to give guests authentic, enriching experiences and insights into the Fijian culture and way of life. But depending on your budget and location preference there are a number

ich River Golf Club Resort is situated within the beautiful Murray River region of Echuca - Moama. Less than 3 hours from Melbourne, this popular historic town was voted number 35 amongst the top 100 towns to visit in Australia. Be taken back to the bustling riverboat days with a stroll through the historic Port of Echuca precinct or cruise down the mighty Murray River to one of the many local wineries. bowls, tennis, dining, conferences and functions, TAB and Keno, Sports Bar, coffee shop, bistro, motel and fullystocked Pro Shop. Any golf club is only as good as its course. Rich River’s two Championship courses have a reputation of being one of regional Australia’s premier golfing venues that will delight everyone, from the experienced professional to the casual player. The West Course stretches to 6,227 metres off the men’s tees, playing to a par of 72. Ladies benefit from an extra shot on the 5th, playing this tough par-4 for the men as a par-5. Opened in 1979, the West Course has been host to many professional events. It

has a tight layout with tree-lined fairways and elevated greens making scoring perhaps tougher than on the East Course. The East Course, though, is no pushover. Measuring 6,247 metres off the men’s tees, it plays to a par of 72 for both sexes. Redesigned by Peter Thomson in 1998, the East Course is links style with water coming into play on several holes. The back nine is particularly challenging with the last five holes – with its strategic water hazards and tough bunkering – capable of making or breaking any round. The East Course is currently host to the Rich River Trainee Classic, one of only two national trainee events in Australia.

Both courses are of championship calibre, are immaculately groomed and playable all year round. Playing both of these wonderful layouts in one day or successive days is the stuff of dreams for the enthusiastic golfer. James Maiden Bistro offers dining options to suit all tastes and budgets with specials available every night of the week. Their Executive Chef and his talented team provide a wide selection of taste sensations expertly prepared onsite for your enjoyment. They also invite you to experience their Coffee Shop, Sports Bar or Spike Bar. Tatalia – Echuca-Moama’s premier first floor event and functions venue – offers a spectacular venue with modern

facilities in a delightful setting. Enjoy stunning views over the West Golf Course and breathtaking sunsets, beautifully captured through the floor to ceiling windows. It is the perfect setting for an intimate function for 30 or a large affair of up to 350 guests. Delectable food, fine wine and entertainment of your choice complete the perfect day. They pride themselves on exceptional service and extensive menu options, sourcing quality produce whilst offering generous portions.

Golfer or not, Rich River is a great spot to base any trip to the Murray River region and this truly beautiful part of the world. Adjacent to the clubhouse and surrounding golf courses, the 63-room complex surrounds the manicured lush gardens which houses two outdoor pools, spa, BBQ area and children’s play equipment. Once here, you will never need (or want) to leave. Rich River have 40 standard suites accommodating up to three adults. These
