ew events have stood the test of time like the World Masters Golf Championship on the Gold Coast each October. This event for club golfers aged 35 years and over has attracted big numbers from all over Australia, New Zealand and around the world for more than 20 years. This month, we go behind the scenes to see what makes this tournament so popular and what’s in store for the 21st annual tournament this year. Hosted by Gold Coast-based Go Golfing, we chatted with Peter McCarthy, the tournament founder who is still at the helm. What comes as the biggest surprise

is that Peter started the tournament some 13 years before he was even old enough to play in the tournament. “Fresh out of university I secured a contract with the World Masters Games in Brisbane. There were 30 sports and golf was one of the sports I managed. We budgeted for 400 golfers and had more than 1,700 compete. It was massively challenging and working through solutions for all of the challenges and putting on an amazing event, well there’s no better feeling. What can I say, it’s in my blood and I love what I do.”

Peter’s first World Masters tournament was on the Gold Coast in 1996 and attracted 340 players. Tournament numbers peaked at more than 1,000 players about 10 years ago, however this year, entries are being capped at just 600. “For a long time my primary focus was on making the event as big as it can be. But then I had players who come every year telling me the event was too big. One guy approached me on stage to put a call out to his wife as he had spent 15 minutes looking for her. So now my team are firmly focused on how we can make the tournament better and better for players and their partners.” The event has a loyal following with 65% of players returning from one year to the next. More than 90 golfers have played 10 or more years and two players, Dennis 

Childlow and Glenn Dodds have played all 20 years. Newcomers and singles are made to feel welcome with a cocktail party style catch-up before the welcome dinner. “With so many repeat players, we are always looking at ways to refresh and enhance the event experience. Marcia Hines, Little River Band and Jerry Lewis have performed at the event. In recent years Australia’s top comedy acts have been the feature entertainment on opening nights. We have had functions on the beach, Skydeck on the 71st floor and palatial ballrooms.” To celebrate the 21st running of the World Masters, held 23-28 October, Go Golfing has fine-tuned an event program inspired by what golfers have most enjoyed over the past 20 years.

INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL | April 2016

BROADBEACH AS THE TOURNAMENT BASE 82% of participants prefer to stay in Broadbeach, which has accommodation to suit all budgets. It offers the ultimate coastal resort experience just metres from the Gold Coast’s best beaches, restaurants serving every cuisine, casino, bars and shopping with the all new Pacific Fair and Oasis shopping centres. It has accommodation to suit all budgets. Three years ago more than 300 golfers stayed at Meriton and gave it the thumbs up, so Go Golfing have secured a great deal for golfers to stay there again. Another property secured is the beachfront property, Air on Broadbeach.

TOP RESORT COURSES The private and exclusive The Pines at Sanctuary Cove was a host course for the first time last year. 71% ranked it as their favourite course so it is on the four course rotation this year. Graham Marsh’s complete redesign of RACV Royal Pines Resort was finished in time for the PGA Championship in December and Ladies Masters participants have given the course a big thumbs up. While most will recognise the former layout, the new course features more risk and reward holes and massive undulating greens. Palm Meadows is arguably the best layout on the Gold Coast. Under new

management, course conditioning has returned to the glory days when it hosted Australia’s richest tournament - the Palm Meadows Cup. It has been 6 years since Palm Meadows hosted the World Masters, but with new bunkers, new carts and those fantastic greens, Go Golfing welcomes Palm Meadows’ return this year. The Glades is always a favourite at the Masters. With the completion of new bunkering and upgrades to the practice facilities, it will again be a premier course at the Masters. Hope Island and The Colonial will host optional events in conjunction with the World Masters.

DAILY GOLF PRIZES OPENING NIGHT AT AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK SPECTACULAR In 2013 the welcome dinner was at Australian Outback Spectacular. 94% listed that night in the top 3 things they enjoyed at the tournament. 2016 participants will enjoy a 3 course dinner, drinks and their all new show – Legends of the High Country.

GALA PRESENTATION DINNER The gala presentation dinner will be at the brand-new Events Centre. Arrive on the red carpet, sip on champagne before enjoying a delectable 3-course menu prepared by award winning chefs and a dance band after the presentations.

The island is King Long famed for its cheese, free-range beef and laidback atmosphere, King Island in Bass Strait is also quickly becoming known on a global scale for its amazing, world-class golf. With two brand-new courses gracing its shores, golfers from far and wide are buzzing with excitement about this once sleepy island.

I

n most golfing circles these days, King Island is spoken about with much excitement. Home to two of Australia’s newest (and arguably most exciting) golf courses, the tiny island is on the verge of a major boom in golf tourism, as the courses, services, accommodation and food are all becoming renowned across the globe.

THE GOLF With 15 of its 18 holes now open, Ocean Dunes, on the west coast of the island,

6

INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL | April 2016

Ocean Dunes has everything that the ardent golfer could want. From spectacular ocean views to challenging world-class golf, Ocean Dunes is destined for golf course greatness. Covering 285 acres incorporating rolling dunes and unsurpassed views along 2km of majestic coastline, the course features subtle, rolling greens set in pictureperfect, natural locations. Multiple tee blocks are available for players of all standards to choose from –whether you opt for the “heroic” effort from the back

tees, or the more “friendly” forward tees, there is something for everyone. In addition to the front nine, which were opened in October last year, the February opening of the stunning par-three tenth, which plays across 3 Rivers Bay, as well as the 11th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th holes gives golfers an 18-hole prelude to the opening of the entire course (golfers can play a three-hole loop of the 10th, 17th & 18th for a second time from different tees). The remaining holes are due to open later this year.

Ocean Dunes director and course architect Graeme Grant has compared King Island’s new courses to the famous layouts on California’s Monterey Peninsula. “It’s realistic to think that we have the Australian equivalent of Cypress Point and Pebble Beach here on King Island with such spectacular links land and a rugged coast line just perfect for golf,” Grant said. The consensus from visitors to Ocean Dunes has been overwhelmingly positive, according to Grant.

King Island

“The response has been very encouraging. Players from the US, Europe, the UK & Asia have already been here. They all say they will be back and will tell the world.” “Preview” rounds are available. Please contact Ocean Dunes directly for further information. Once the course is complete and the turf is ready at the beginning of spring the 18 hole green fee will be $150. More information: www.oceandunes.com.au Though only open for a very short time, Tasmania’s new Cape Wickham Links has been ranked the 24th best golf course in the world by Golf Digest Magazine (USA). Situated near the northwestern tip of King Island and designed by American Mike DeVries and Melbourne’s Darius Oliver, the course has been open for just a few months but was described as one of the “hottest new layouts on the globe”. “From day one, all involved in the Cape Wickham project knew they were dealing with an exceptional piece of land, and to create anything less than a sublime golf experience would have

been disappointing,” said developer Duncan Andrews, who is also the owner of the popular Dunes Golf Links on the Mornington Peninsula. “I think they have achieved a sublime golf experience and it is pleasing that this is being formally recognised in a world context.” The Cape Wickham routing has been described as “heart-pounding, starting along rocks and crashing surf, moving inland but not out of the wind, returning to ocean edge at the downhill 10th, pitchshot 11th and drivable par-4 12th, then wandering into dunes before a crescendo closing hole curving along Victoria Cove beach, which is in play at low tides.” The 18-hole rate is $150, while golfers can play all day for $195. Carts are $45. Hire clubs are $50. More information: www.capewickham.com.au

courses you’ll ever play, demanding creativity and strategy to plot your way to the hole. It’s also a lot of fun.

Their food is healthy, delicious and hearty, with breakfast served all day. There are also quiches, salads, cakes and scones with jam and King Island cream which will hit the spot. There are also Gluten-free and vegetarian options. Soy is available.

Somewhat overshadowed by the two new courses (but no less spectacular), the long-established King Island Golf and Bowls club, in Currie, is one of the world’s greatest 9-hole courses. When the wind is blowing, it is one of the most challenging

Located on Old Grassy Road, off South Road, just 10 minutes south east of Currie and nestled amongst the gum trees and a chorus of birds, Cafe Brewer is the ideal place to take a peaceful moment and visualise your round of golf ahead.

The course hugs a spectacular coastline, offering endless ocean vistas, a clever routing and greens in great condition. The course is a composite 18 holes, with alternate tees (17) and greens (12) on ten fairways. There are three Par-3s, 12 Par4s and three Par-5s with a total length of 5476m. Their latest (and most exciting!) offering is the ultimate Tasmanian golf tour. Across four days, you can play four of Australia’s best courses: Barnbougle Dunes, Barnbougle Lost Farm, Cape Wickham and Ocean Dunes. If you’re looking for a golfing holiday that offers far more than just the game; then this is the way to go, especially as you’re travelling on your own private plane! Fly in style with Air Adventure Golf Tours in just 45 minutes, landing direct on the course’s private airfield. Excluding the need for the lengthy delays associated with flying out of major airports, Air Adventure’s John Dyer estimates that golfers can save up to four hours of transit time in one day. “It can be as little as 90 minutes from take off to tee off at Barnbougle,” Dyer says. “We’re partnered with Sharp Airlines so we’ve also got that added level of compliance and safety assurance. With our pressurised cabins, it’s also a much smoother ride and you’ll be able to get up above any bad weather.” Air Adventure Golf Tours can carry up to eight golfers per aircraft (two aircraft available) and supplies all passengers with pencil golf bags for transit and full-size golf bags to use at each course they play. More information: Phone: 1800 033 160. Or visit golf.airadventure.com.au Tour operator Golf & Gourmet has recently released packages that visit King Island and have the option to go any day with the scheduled airlines or use the special flights from Essendon Airport to and from King Island on specific dates.

Golf & Gourmet has also combined King Island with Barnbougle to establish a 7-night package, staying at the Island Breeze Motel on King Island and Barnbougle Lodge located at the Lost Farm course. Within this package guests play all four courses with time to enjoy the local attractions, participate in other activities or simply play more golf. Flights are not included in this package as the combinations can be used to visit either Barnbougle or King Island first. Golf & Gourmet is there to assist in planning what works best for each person. Prices for the King Island Experience are $902 per person twin share, while the King Island & Barnbougle package is $1598 per person twin share. Prices will likely increase as King Island becomes better known as a great golf destination, so Golf & Gourmet strongly suggest that you book it now and enjoy this excellent value. Kilimanjaro Golf & Wildlife Estate

By “Scottish Bob” Davies

T

his beautiful 18-hole par-72 championship golf course was built in Tanzania by the world renowned golf course designer David Jones in 2013 a former Kenya Open Champion, the course is 1400 metres above sea level and set in 1000 acres of African Bush, near the small town of Usa River and is only a 30-minute drive from the Kilimanjaro airport, and it must be rated as one of the most beautiful and exhilarating golf courses in the world. Imagine playing golf with the

magnificent Mt Kilimanjaro as your backdrop. Well, this can happen to you when you play at Kilimanjaro Golf & Wildlife Estate, but not only can you play golf under Africa’s highest mountain (which is also the highest free-standing mountain in the world and it is a dormant volcano which rises to over 19,300 feet), it is also the fourth highest mountain in the world, so after short break from your game of golf, you could then decide to go mountain climbing on Africa’s highest mountain and tick another box on your bucket list.

After you return from your mountain climbing adventure to your resort, why not relax in the beautiful Estate with a cold drink in your hand and watch the abundance of African wildlife that roams the area, from giraffes, zebras, wildebeast, gazelles, small wild cats like civet, and the African cerval, jackals, ardvaarks, and much more of the amazing and interesting wildlife. It is hard to believe that all this can be obtained in one place at the amazing Kilimanjaro Golf & Wildlife Estate.

Ellis says Hawaii is, without doubt, the golf resort capital of the world. The island of Hawaii, known as “The Big Island”, is a 30-minute flight from Honolulu and has many of the best courses in Hawaii, designed by some of the greatest names in golf. There are seven world-class courses within 15 minutes’ drive from the fantastic Hapuna Beach Hotel at Mauna Kea Resort. Competitors in this event will get to play five rounds on the best of these great course and there’s a day where they can sharpen their skills at the golf school run by PGA professionals (all included in the cost).

The four-round tournament is played on a different course each day. You don’t have to be a great golfer to join in as there are different handicap divisions for women and men, a scratch section for the guns, great prizes, nightly drinks, cocktail party and fun gala tournament dinner to finish.

Accommodation during this event is at the Mauna Kea Resort’s five-star Hapuna Beach Hotel which is set on one of the best beaches in the world and everyone will enjoy the ocean view from their rooms. There are always a number of nongolfing partners on this trip and, as you would imagine, Hawaii has numerous activities on offer apart from golf. For those who wish to spend more time in golfing paradise and some welldeserved R& R after the tournament, Pacific Golf Management will take a short flight to the island of Maui, spend four

nights at the beautiful Westin Resort & Spa on Kaanapali Beach, great shopping, fantastic beachfront bars and restaurants and a round of golf at the Plantation course at Kapalua, home of the USPGA Tour’s tournament of champions. To finish the trip it’s a short flight back to Honolulu and the final night of the tour is at the famous Waikiki. Ellis says this is his favourite tour and tournament every year; great golf courses, beautiful beachfront hotels,

fantastic weather and plenty of fun. If you would like to see some of the great Hawaii courses they play, just Google Mauna Kea Resort, Mauna Lani Resort just four of the world-class layouts you will play. RESORT OF THE MONTH >

RACV Royal Pines Resort By David Newbery

“The par-3s are different and interesting while the par-5s offer good scoring chances if you are smart with your approach shots.

A

S you approach the Gold Coast suburb of Benowa along Nerang-Broadbeach Road, there, dominating the skyline and overlooking the Gold Coast stands the tall triangularshaped building of RACV Royal Pines Resort.

“The golfing public are taking up the challenge and loving it. “A lot of golfers are walking off the 18th green and booking another round, which is a clear indication how good it is.”

It’s a welcoming sight for golfers, romantic couples and families keen on soaking up the wide range of activities the resort has to offer.

Graham Marsh’s design philosophy is to give pleasure to all golfers – professionals and amateurs alike. “The most important aspect of golf is design and that is to create a golf course that can actually challenge the very best players but at the same time provide an opportunity for the average player to have fun,” he said.

Oh, and if you are travelling there with your family and the kids ask, “are we there yet” you can confidently reply, “yes we are” as you sweep over the bridge crossing Ross Street and pull up in front of the 22-storey resort. Once checked in, a friendly attendant will have your luggage in your suite before you can shout “fore”. So, let the fun begin. After all, memories are waiting to be made at RACV Royal Pines Resort. The first-class resort, which features new two-bedroom suites and is just a short distance from the bone-white sandy beaches of Surfers Paradise and the lush beauty of the Gold Coast Hinterland, is the perfect destination whether it be for business or pleasure. At RACV Royal Pines Resort, you’ll find award-winning restaurants and bars, day spa, gymnasium, impressive children’s playground, pools, awardwinning conference and event spaces and 27-magnificent golf holes. If you are here to play the new-look 14

Graham Marsh-designed championship golf course then you take a left turn after crossing the bridge and pull up outside the fully-stocked pro shop where an attendant takes care of your golf clubs while you park the car. If, like me, you like to arrive early you can slip into the conveniently located Tees Clubhouse for a coffee, cold drink and a bite to eat before hitting the magnificent driving range and short-game practice facility. So, what can golfers visiting for the first time expect? The advice from PGA professional Mark Gibson, who runs his Exceptional Golf teaching academy at the resort, is don’t let your ego cloud your judgement. “There are five sets of tees and if you pick

the right coloured tees to suit your ability/ handicap it is very enjoyable,” Gibson said. Men can choose to play off the black (6734m), blue (6225m), white (5870m) and yellow (5538m) while the women play off the red tees (5111m) or they can challenge themselves off the yellow tees. Colleague David Ross and I, mid-range handicappers, decided to play off the white tees (slope 126) and found the course challenging, but fair. “It’s a thinking golfer’s course and definitely rewards good shots,” Gibson said. “The quality of feature shaping is excellent and Graham Marsh has designed a layout to test all golfers. “The mounding is brilliant for visually testing the player and the green surrounds are challenging.

“What I have tried to do with this golf course is to make it a thinking person’s golf course and I have tried to make it a shotmaker’s golf course and largely we have done that.” The golf course is definitely more challenging than the original design, which had more of a resort-style feel to it. The first two holes, a par-4 and a par-3, are demanding. After that, the course settles down and flows into a nice pattern with one or two more tough holes before reaching the short par-4 eighth (index 16) and shortpar-5 ninth (index 12). That gives golfers a break before heading into the back nine. The course ends with four absorbing holes – the par-5 15th (index 9), followed by a shortish par-3 (index 17), a shortish

par-4 (350m blue and 319m white) with out of bounds left and the 18th (index 10), which stretches to 416m and 399m from the blue and white tees respectively. Marsh said he wanted strong finishing holes and he has achieved that. “You really have to work hard on concentration and shot-by-shot play,” he said. “The par-5 15th is reachable in two, but if you make a slight error you can pay a severe price. On the other hand, you can make eagle so it’s potentially a two-shot swing.

“Again, the 18th (index 1) is all about getting the ball on the fairway.” If you miss the large, raised, undulating green left, right or over the back you will have your challenges making par or bogey. It didn’t bother colleague David Ross who walked off with a birdie while I had to settle for a double-bogey only because I didn’t heed Graham Marsh or Mark Gibson’s advice. “I told you it was a thinking golfer’s golf course,” Gibbo said.

“Play a poor shot at 16 and you’ll make bogey. Play a good shot and you can make birdie.

Still, I did manage 33 stableford points, which was rather pleasing considering it was my first attempt.

“The tee shot on 17, which is now 40m longer, is demanding whereas before players were taking irons from the tee. That’s not testing a player.

I can’t wait to have another crack at this challenging must-play layout where eyecatching bunkering, water hazards, swales and mounds and some devilish greens are a constant reminder to think before launching into the next tee or approach shot.

“Now players will have to make a decision about what club they use from the tee and it will have to be more than a long iron.
