Welcome to August! What an eventful summer it has been! We’ve been busy at Inside enjoying the events and planning for some exciting months ahead I hope you have been enjoying your summer

As you probably noticed from the vibrancy of the town, it was Pride month in July Victoria Park was full of colour, energy and inclusivity as local LGBTQ+ communities celebrated The People’s Proud Picnic together, while Worthing Museum and Art Gallery are, for the first time, exhibiting Out of Artist’s Exhibition that is running across the summer months Our lovely contributor, Caroline Osella, wrote some thought-provoking poetry for it that is on the walls surrounded by some other amazing pieces of art by multiple artists and writers I highly recommend checking out that exhibition while it’s still there

It’s free to the public and finishes on the 10th September

There was also, of course, the colourful parade that graced our promenade lighting up the grey skies and rain didn’t seem to matter at all! The parade was followed by a music festival in Steyne Gardens that ran across the whole weekend

We also had a carnival nearer the end of July with fireworks and music, and Broadwater’s Big Day Out, although this was after we went to print, but I’m sure the town had fun!

If you think this is the end of celebration and festivity in Worthing, well… there is certainly more to come! An exciting not-for-profit film festival is taking place in September, focused on building a positive, sustainable future as a community, with events for everyone and of course, Worthing Food and Drink Festival

This August edition is packed with some interesting articles and information about our town I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together

Have you noticed how proud we are of “our Matt”? Keep in touch! Liana

Stopping Prescription Waste

Iwork in Pharmacies across West Sussex I and everyone else involved in the service are continuously surprised at the amount of medicines ordered, but never collected by patients Additionally, a huge amount of prescription medicines are returned to us; some in unopened packets which have never been used In 2010, the NHS estimated that unused medicines were costing £300 million, and that figure will have grown markedly between then and now

Later research (2021) estimated that £500 million was wasted purely on medicines prescribed when other nondrug treatments may have been more appropriate

At the time in 2010, that £300 million could have paid for…

✓ 11,800 more community nurses, or

✓ 80,100 more hip replacements, or

✓ 19,800 drug treatment courses for breast cancer, or

✓ 312,000 more cataract operations

So, prescription waste is an expensive problem, that can be reduced, with the money saved freed up to pay for more care

Patients should let their GP and/or Pharmacist know if they have stopped taking any of their medicines There can

be legitimate reasons for this; such as uncomfortable side effects However, there are some patients who carry on ordering, as they think they may be upsetting the doctors’ applecart if they don’t follow their instructions Your GP and Pharmacist can advise on alternatives and keep you well

Make sure you check what medicines you have in stock at home before you re-order, and think carefully before you tick all the boxes on your re-order form There is no need to order something “just in case” if you do not really need it You can always place another order later Medicines stored at home should be in a cool dry place, definitely not the kitchen or bathroom cupboard Don’t mix new medicines with old, or you may take the wrong thing! Also, keep medicines safely out of the reach of children Remember that your prescription medicines are supplied solely for you Do not share them as you may inadvertently cause harm to someone else

Unused medicines need to be disposed of responsibly to protect the health of others and to protect the environment When you need to dispose of medicines, whether prescribed or purchased over the counter, you can return them to any Pharmacy Unfortunately, many waste medicines are disposed of by flushing them down the toilet or by putting them in the bin with general waste We know this because they can be scientifically detected in sewage, water courses and soil samples All Pharmacies have regular collections of unused and waste medicines that are disposed of in a safe manner by authorised contractors If you are returning medicines that have never been opened, they cannot be recycled or used by anyone else, due to safety concerns The Pharmacy team will need to know if any “Controlled Drugs” are in the returns (usually strong opiate drugs such as Morphine), as they must be destroyed with an authorised witness present Any medicine waste that includes needles (eg some insulin medicines) cannot be returned to the Pharmacy This type of waste is collected by the local Council’s clinical waste service Patients can contact the Council by calling them or going online to request a collection

Waterproofs, Wellies and Wellness

Summer is making its way across the Downs, and people are heading out to get their nature fix Personally, having the South Downs as a place to escape during the pandemic felt like a life-saver and they’ve had a special place in my heart ever since

I’m certainly not alone in needing to get out into green spaces Immersing yourself in nature has a long list of health benefits, both mental and physical So much so, that improving access to green spaces could save the NHS money by keeping people healthier and happier Children who spend time in nature have even been shown to learn better and achieve more at school Being connected to our environment has a life-long impact on each of us

Many of us came to appreciate this fact more than ever during the pandemic, when getting outside meant a muchneeded change of scenery and a chance to spend time with friends and family While, for most people, normality has returned, this quiet love for nature has persisted  But, those of us able to get out and explore are often more fortunate than we realise Many people across the UK face barriers to accessing nature This is particularly true for older people, those dealing with health problems, and people living in deprived areas or facing poverty

CONNECTION AND COMMUNITY

Part of what The Wellderness - an organisation set up during the pandemichas been doing over the past few years, is trying to bring people together and place the community back into nature

Doing so in a way that is accessible to everyone isn’t always easy, especially when the things holding people back aren’t always obvious Wheelchair-accessible spaces and low-cost or free tickets are a starting point to bring more of the community together, but the barriers facing people aren’t necessarily visible Last year, The Wellderness sat down with Gina Bradbury Fox from the Outdoor Guide Foundation to talk about the Waterproofs and Wellies Campaign

“Roughly a third of children in state primary schools do not get outside because they don’t have the right kit,” she explained

The Outdoor Guide was started by Gina and her sister, presenter Julia Bradbury, to share information about the great outdoors but it became apparent that this wasn’t enough As Gina explained, children get outside less than prison inmates In the summer months, getting out during school breaks can be fun But come the cold and the rain, many kids from deprived areas are either trapped inside or forced to face the weather, leaving them wet, cold, miserable and with less love for nature than ever So, the Outdoor Guide Foundation launched its Waterproofs and Wellies Campaign and The Wellderness quickly got on board

The goal of the campaign is simple: donate 10 sets of wellies and waterproofs to every state primary school in the UK…all 20,000 of them!

GETTING WORTHING’S KIDS INTO NATURE

Last year, the team at The Wellderness ran a fundraiser including a family event at Furzefield The Wellderness wanted to give local businesses a chance to support the community in the process, so suggested anyone willing to help out could buy and donate tickets, allowing the community to attend for free The response was spectacular: all ticket sales came via donation, allowing everyone who attended the event to do so for free All sales went to the Outdoor Guide Foundation, raising £275 and Focus Group, a tech company based in Shoreham, donated an additional £275 A further £320 came in via raffle ticket sales for prizes donated by partners of the Outdoor Guide Foundation

In total, the event raised enough for three schools The outdoor clothing kits

were donated to local schools: St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Worthing, Field Place Infant School in Durrington and Buckingham Park Primary School in Shoreham

The event was a genuine demonstration of what communities can achieve when they come together Each of the schools run programmes designed to get their students out into nature and these kits will allow children to join in with forest school, play outside, or join the school’s gardening club

BRINGING THE OUTDOORS HOME

It’s been inspiring to see our local community changing children’s lives But the reality of inequality is never simple Barriers to accessing nature are varied and complex and if we don’t value the natural world, they won’t be tackled  The reality is, that we could do with changing our whole relationship with the environment Getting outside and connecting with nature improves our lives and incentivises us to better protect it We saw that shift begin during the pandemic, with so many people taking time to slow down and be in nature But with a return to our normal, busy lives, we are already losing a lot of that newfound connection Being outside from an early age has the potential to drastically improve a child’s life But if parents are not spending that time outside, their children aren’t either

The real task is inspiring children and adults alike to bring nature into their dayto-day lives Whether that means long weekend walks with the kids or simply stopping to listen to the birds in your local park Making nature connection a more central part of our day-to-day, even in small ways, could change all our lives for the better

10 WELLDERNESS

Worthing-based community interest company Dad

La Soul is celebrating a trio of recent award wins, including a Points of Light from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, £10k funding from Comic Relief and becoming a finalist in the “Grammys of Entrepreneurship.”

The small team of volunteers based in Worthing are celebrating after a run of recent success in the last week, starting with a £10K grant fund from Comic Relief to expand their innovative Dads-Only Meetups, events are currently running in Worthing The new Meetups will take place every month at incredible venues in Brighton, and Hove

The Meetups are open to dads, stepdads, grandads and all male-identifying carers, with a mixture of entertainment and opportunities to meet new friends and support each other Branded “a youth club for dads with a difference”, the idea was borne out of the group discovering that men tend to witness their social circles shrink after they have children, with fewer opportunities for them to open up to their peers

Award From The Prime Minister, Tops Treble Win For Worthing-Based Dad Revolution

The Brighton Meetup will occur at leading Digital PR agency Propellernet offices in Castle Square and the Hove event is housed at co-working space, Freedom Works at Hove Business Centre on Fonthill Rd, just one minute from Hove train station

This expansion comes on top of the recent announcement that the group was selected for the daily “Points of Light” award from Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, in recognition of its work, creating a support network of over 10,000 fathers across the UK and internationally Furthermore, founder, Dan Flanagan, was nominated for the “Purpose Entrepreneur of the Year” at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards; the “Grammy’s of Entrepreneurship” The results will be announced at London’s Grosvenor Hotel, later this year

Dad La Soul founder, Dan Flanagan, said:

“We want to create a dad’s night out that is fun, silly, and enjoyable, but also goes deeper than just generic “bloke” chat. It is a safe space for dads to come and let o steam, rant if needed, and o er and receive support. We have some fantastic partnerships with organisations, such as Mind West Sussex, to create direct pathways that, traditionally, men don’t access due to work commitments or societal constraints that they should “man up.”

For dates, times and more information, visit www.dadlasoul.com.

Starting with the common theme of being a dad, the conversation can go anywhere, and often does. That is why we commission a range of stand-up comedians and TedX-level speakers to cover everything from eating disorders, dealing with mental health struggles recognising addiction, and what men need to know about the menopause and beyond. It is a common misconception that men only talk about beer and footie.

The groups are a ready-made friendship group of over 3000 dads based across the UK, Germany, the US and New Zealand, which is perfect for those dads who don’t get around to catching up with their old mates anymore.

We know from our research that 73% of dads have felt socially isolated, so events like this target the source of the issue by creating everything from nights out at gigs and stand-up comedy nights to VR headsets, DJ workshops, board games, and sea-swimming sauna sessions to help with mental and physical health issues.”

On the funding and recognition, Dan said:

“Dad La Soul is incredibly grateful for the continued support of all our funders, especially the fantastic Comic Relief for recognising the work we do getting men together and talking. Their £10,000 will help us support so many dads on the south coast with this much-needed resource, and getting the call from 10 Downing Street was the cherry on the cake - it is incredible to think that the work of our team of volunteers is being heard in Westminster!

Dad La Soul, founded in 2017, exists to orchestrate a revolution, allowing the stories and struggles of six million dads in the UK to be seen, heard and supported. The movement is now widely recognised as the leading organisation of its kind in the UK, using a unique mixture of arts, tech, music and play to start conversations that matter. It runs regular award-winning playdates in Worthing and Brighton for dads and kids, online dad sessions, and the Dads-Only Meetups.

Dad La Soul Triumphs with Prestigious Awards: Prime Minister’s Recognition, Comic Relief’s Generosity, and Finalist in The Grammy’s of Entrepreneurship
COMMUNITY REVOLUTION 11

East Beach Studios

Following my visit to East Beach Studios last month, it is safe to say that it is a must-visit space for you and your family this summer There is something there for everyone!

Nestled along the coastline, East Beach Studios stands as a testament to the creative spirit and community-driven ethos of Worthing’s local art scene Formerly beach huts rented by the public, these charming spaces were transformed into art studios about 15 years ago by the previous owner of Coast Café Today, Beth and Angie (pictured above), two passionate artists run this unique venture, which has become a thriving hub for independent artists At East Beach Studio, the concept of community is at the heart of everything they do The studios have evolved from just traditional long-term rentals to a mix of month-to-month pop-up studios and long-term rentals, ensuring a dynamic environment where artists can flourish The studios are open from Thursday to Saturday, with artists in each studio present during those days, fostering a unique sense of camaraderie while allowing the public to engage directly with the creators

Beth explains, “A lot of people here

have relationships with locals who might be walking their dog or doing their daily walk, so there are always conversations, and it’s a proper community. We’re a bit like a dysfunctional family!”

The history of East Beach Studios is intertwined with the evolution of the Worthing art scene When Coast changed ownership three and a half years ago, the new proprietor decided not to continue with the studios Therefore Beth, who started as an artist here nine years ago, took it upon herself to preserve this artistic haven alongside Angie They introduced new systems, quality control measures and mentoring programs to create a cohesive and supportive environment for artists at different levels of experience

The studio owners are actively involved in mentoring and supporting artists, particularly those who are exhibiting for the first time From framing and pricing artwork to developing social media presence, Beth and Angie provide guidance and instil confidence in the artists We focus on two of the artists

12 INSIDE OUT AND ABOUT

THOMAS FREER

Thomas, an artist at Each Beach Studios, has found solace in his creativity in this supportive community, fuelling his passion for making interactive therapeutic musical instruments out of wood From the early days of East Beach when there were only five studios, Thomas stumbled upon an empty studio at the right time

Before his time at East Beach, Thomas had been selling paintings, sculptures, and photographs of seagulls, to the point where he was unashamedly known as the ‘seagull man’ in Worthing, while working full-time to save up for the components of this bigger project, which is where his passion lies

It’s tricky as an artist going through a developmental stage or building up a portfolio for an exhibition because in all that time, you get stuck in full-time work and it’s really hard to keep your claws into your creativity, otherwise it can slip away. ”

East Beach Studios was a gamechanger for Thomas and his projects because it meant he could have a workshop and display space in one, allowing him to focus on the production of turning raw materials into a piece of art while the public are welcome to come and see the process and hear stories behind it

Having this space is essential for what I do because you can’t just sell it online. You’ve got to feel it, see it, touch it, you’ve got to hear it, experience it and you just can’t do that o a website”

Thomas’s inspiration for his musical instruments has evolved over time Initially incorporating interactive elements into his sculptures, he quickly discovered the positive impact they had on individuals with physical limitations People recovering from strokes, injuries, or trauma, as well as those with disabilities, found solace and joy in Thomas’s creations The ability to immediately create something beautiful through simple interactions struck a chord

For Thomas, the essence of his art lies in its universal appeal He believes that everyone can benefit from the joy of music and movement, regardless of background, abilities, or age Music and movement have the power to liberate, bringing light and joy into peoples’ minds Thomas feels fortunate to be able to create instruments that provide such experiences, all while enjoying the scenic view of the sea from his studio

In a world where almost everything is online, art remains something that needs that human element to it Art, in all its

forms, brings joy, solace, companionship, and community

CHLOE - ME-SHIRTS

Chloe, owner of ‘Me-Shirts’, has found her niche in personalised fabric-painting kits, offering a unique and creative experience for children What started as a hobby and a bit of fun with her daughter during lockdown, quickly grew into a successful business Originally based in Chloe’s old home in London, she would create and sell everything from one room, which could, at times, feel quite isolating

After relocating to Worthing in late August, Chloe opened her studio at East Beach in October, marking nearly a year since her dream became a reality Sitting on the steps of her studio, sipping coffee with a friend, she still finds the whole experience surreal

The inspiring atmosphere and relaxed vibe of East Beach Studio provides the perfect backdrop for her creative work Moreover, Chloe emphasizes the incredible sense of community among the artists at the studio, where they exchange advice, support one another, and share ideas

Chloe’s approach to art is unique While she doesn’t create traditional art pieces herself, she crafts tools and materials that allow children to unleash their creativity

at home or during the workshops she holds These workshops, taking place at a table outside her studio on Saturdays and during the summer holidays, offer children an opportunity to engage in art and tap into their imagination

The soothing presence of the sea and waves combined with the freedom of creative expression creates a calming environment where children can stay engaged for extended periods of time Parents are often amazed at how their kids can sit still and enjoy the artistic process Chloe believes that art and creativity are essential for well-being, and East Beach Studio provides an ideal setting for children to explore their creative potential

Chloe’s workshops also provide parents with a chance to spend quality time with their children While kids are occupied and having fun, parents can enjoy a coffee from Coast, catch up with friends, or simply relax

Me-Shirts offers parties and gifts that are unique and non-disposable MeShirts appeal to children of all ages and genders, while also fostering community and connection

So, why not visit East Beach Studios and embark on a creative adventure that will ensure lasting memories while also supporting our local artists? We will feature other artists in future months

“Our

TV debut with Retro Electro Workshop

New TV series, Retro Electro Workshop, came out on Yesterday channel last month featuring our very own regular contributor, Matt Marchant!

A UKTV Original series for Yesterday, Retro Electro Workshop is about the dying art of repairing electronics, featuring electronics repairer Matt, super-fixer Rob Howard and Shamil and his dad T Rob Howard is one of the UK’s last remaining full-time repairers of retro-electronic products with over 30 years experience Walthamstowbased restoration specialists Shamil, and his dad T, run a vintage electronics store Matt Marchant has answered some questions to help us to get to know him a bit a better

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF MATT.

I was born in Shoreham-by-Sea and developed an almost unhealthy obsession with electro-mechanical items from a young age My mum said I’d frequently flip my buggy over, just to play with the wheels My parents would often discover me taking apart the family’s Hoover or toaster, while most normal kids kicked a ball around Playing with Lego, bikes, old radios and the odd washing machine as a child eventually led me to work for BT as an apprentice I worked my way from junior technician to senior engineer I left BT in 2018 and now work for the local authority in business management

I started FixItWorkshop in 2017 as a fun fixing-related blog, where I measured repair time in biscuits and tea drinking FixItWorkshop grew legs and has become a part-time business alongside my family commitments

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN FIXING ELECTRONICS AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO IT?

Since childhood My Dad was a high street branch manager for

Indesit in the 1980s and I would get involved in some of the repairs

My Nan was a highly skilled seamstress with a room in her house dedicated to dress-making and garment repair work I watched her make and repair clothes, always fascinated by the equipment she used My love of cars and motorbikes came from a neighbour and life-long friend I first got the chance to work on engines, car bodywork etc with him

ARE MOST RETRO GADGETS REPAIRABLE?

Shamil buys a Sinclair C5, Rob has a mayday call from Radio Caroline and Matt tackles a Casio keyboard

EPISODE 3 – JUKE BOX:

Shamil finds a 70s Juke Box, Rob works on an old bus and Matt works on a collectable Kit Cat clock that doesn’t tell the time

EPISODE 4 – COMMODORE 64:

Shamil and Rob pick up a Commodore 64 and Spectrum ZX for repair and Matt meets a customer with a Raleigh Vektar bike

EPISODE 5 – BOOMBOX:

Shamil buys a Boombox for repair, Rob visits a collector of wartime memorabilia with an old radio that hasn’t worked in decades and Matt gets smoked out of his workshop by a retro food mixer

EPISODE 6 – WELTRON 8 TRACK:

Shamil finds an iconic Weltron Space Helmet radio, Rob picks up a 1950s Ferguson TV and Matt fixes an Elna sewing machine that no longer stitches

EPISODE 7 – PINBALL:

Shamil buys a vintage pinball machine, Rob goes to an auction of old radios and makes a rare find, while Matt re-wires an Edwardian lamp that is a family heirloom

EPISODE 8 – SCALEXTRIC:

WHAT’S

USUALLY WRONG WITH THE ITEMS THAT ARE BROUGHT IN FOR REPAIR?

Common issues are breaks in wiring/connections, jammed motors, worn capacitors, etc Age is a factor, for sure A seasoned repairer will know what to look for The stranger the item, the longer the diagnosis time Lastly, plain neglect and a lack of care A wipe with a damp cloth and a drop of oil can go a long way towards keeping something working for longer which to me, is what it’s all about I dislike waste and hate seeing an otherwise serviceable thing go to waste when I can see that it still has more life to offer

Yes and no Yes, as older gadgets had components that one can see with the naked eye and test using a basic test meter In stark contrast to modern gadgets with micro or even nano technology, older equipment tended to be designed with service in mind, with good access and component test and replacement included in the design No, because some older components are not available today, since technologies have faded away Even servicing some tape decks made in the 1990s is sometimes a tall order, due to spares availability

IF SOMEONE WANTED TO START FIXING THEIR OWN GADGETS, WHAT ARE THE 2 BASIC TOOLS THEY WOULD NEED?

A basic multimeter and a small flat bladed screwdriver Any selfrespecting repairer must have those before they get out of bed YouTube has no doubt saved many a broken item and has empowered those who wouldn’t normally tackle a job like this, to succeed for themselves

Shamil relives his childhood memories with a classic Scalextric, Rob lends a hand at a charity workshop and Matt repairs a late 80s Panasonic cassette player

EPISODE 9 – RADIOGRAM:

Shamil hunts down a battered 1940s Marconi Radiogram, Rob gets a 50s TV working again and Matt works on an electro-mechanical Burger toy

EPISODE 10 – TECHNICS:

Shamil buys an 80s Technics deck for Rob to restore Rob is called out to a museum for a Marconi set repair Matt works on a hostess trolley that has special memories for its owner

Tales from the workshop

know that’s a few of you), that they are only really intended to last as long as the warranty Built with longevity and a sound backup network, they are not If you want a quality vacuum cleaner that can be repaired, buy the vacuum with the smiley face!

This all got me thinking about some of the other things that you might have been persuaded to buy for your home, but now probably regret This might be because the thing was too much of a faff to use, or, it didn’t last long, or maybe the cost didn’t justify the performance So, I thought it might be fun to compile a list of rubbish items, that should have stayed on the drawing board, because quite frankly, life’s too short

Maybe you have one of these five useless items, languishing in your home, gathering dust

5 POPCORN MAKERS

Hello once again from the workshop, and hasn’t it been a busy time! Lots of interesting customer repair jobs to be getting on with; from cherished toys, kitchen appliances to printed circuit boards, all needing a little help Dividing my time between family, my main job and the workshop is always a careful balancing act, but somehow, I manage to keep on going See the greying hair

Since offering my repair skills to the charming people of Worthing and beyond, I’ve had to develop a quick-fire set of triage questions when trying to ascertain what the fault is and whether something is truly worth repairing Yes, not everything is worth saving, there, I’ve said it You weren’t expecting that, were you!

Sometimes, my repair skills are only worth investing in something if the item has spare parts available It happens all the time And, when dealing with repair enquiries, I usually have to carefully tread a line between diagnosing a fault on, say, an abused Shark vacuum cleaner that has been used to suck up paint, with the reality that not all spare parts are available for certain models Yes, some new spares are available and yes, there’s always good-old eBay, but I hate to break it to anyone who loves their Shark vacuum cleaner (and I

Honestly, what’s the point of an electric popcorn maker? Popcorn machines on the pier or at the cinema I get, but these DIY-home-install pieces of junk shouldn’t be a thing “Relive that authentic cinematic experience with a freshly made bag of popcorn, all yours for around £20”

Christmas Secret Santa present, check

Last minute, hastily-purchased gift for the wedding of a couple that you don’t really like anyway, who only invited you to the evening do, check The reality is that they take ages to work, are very small and are very difficult to repair And let’s face it, a ready-made bag of the stuff from Asda tastes better If you must have the cook-athome experience, use a lidded saucepan, a little oil and some kernels from the health food aisle

4 ICE CREAM MAKERS

My personal favourite for “what’s the point”!? All you ‘kitchen show-offs’ can spend serious money on these things, and I’ve seen some models that can make ice cream in as little as 40 minutes Yes, 40 minutes - really Imagine the joy Kids party, going well They’ve all eaten their sandwiches, all had their crisps and all they now need is jelly And ice cream Well, the good news is that the jelly is all done, waiting in the fridge, but the ice cream maker is still whirring away to it’s heart’s content for another forty bloody minutes, to produce a thimble full of sub-standard slop Sorry kids, you’ll just have to go without raspberry ripple today, but the good news is that there’s more carrot and celery sticks Yay!

3 BREAD MAKERS

I actually bought one of these useless items back in the day, no doubt trying to impress a would-be lover with my fine artisan baking skills, using only the finest flours and grains from Lidl I even grew a beard to go with my new found skills, but I quickly realised that the way to a girl’s heart, isn’t as a baker Indeed, making baked treats this way, every day, isn’t that good for one’s love life 4am starts in the kitchen to make biscuit-sized loafs is just plain annoying and ruins any notion of a romantic breakfast in bed

2 GEORGE FOREMAN

GRILLE (OTHER SLAB MEAT COUNTER-TOP GRILLES AVAILABLE)

Now, I know that this will divide opinion For some, George’s famous meat grille has changed lives One can cook burgers, steaks and, well, anything

meaty without an oven or hob They’re also cheap to run and great if you have a small kitchen The downside is that all that grease leaks out and they’re virtually impossible to clean thoroughly See the mold and scuzz, the next time you use it Yuck

1 UPRIGHT HOME CARPET WASHERS

Number one was a tough one, but if there’s one repair enquiry I receive too often, it’s for these hideous contraptions I don’t fix them now, as they’re just too troublesome and the manufacturers don’t really support any spares provision We all know the brand that I’m talking about (The one that rhymes with ‘axe’) Maybe you’ve bought one? Maybe you’re thinking of buying one, maybe someone loves theirs ‘so much’ and has recommended that you can’t live without one too Just get a hold of yourself Stop You don’t need one You’ll pay around £300 for a machine that will spend most of its time in the downstairs cupboard, leaking, until you get it out after a year to mop up Fido’s latest accident, only to find that the over-complicated mechanism is seized and to add insult to injury, you’re just out of warranty, Sir Do the sensible thing If you must wash your carpets, hire a decent machine when you need it, or get a professional in to do the work It’ll be cheaper and you’ll get a better result

Well, I feel much better now I’ve been meaning to get that lot off my chest for ages Time for a cuppa don’t you think? PS, don’t forget to tune into Retro Electro Workshop, on Yesterday Channel (27) and UKTV Play I’m on it!

Fake News/Fake History?

We read a lot these days about ‘fake news’ and ‘disinformation,’ and even ‘conspiracy theories’ These phrases are bandied about in the media, seeming to have the intention of damning an idea or opinion without discussing its merits, or failings in detail The use of these epithets seems sufficient to damn a person and their opinions out of hand

If it happens in our contemporary world, it also happens when considering the past We might ask ourselves, what is ‘fake’ history and what is ‘real history?’ How do we know what we read is correct and reliable? Could we actually be receiving a lot of sham history from dubious sources? Indeed, we can! To prove the case, I am going to take one historian to task –myself!

Last year, when I was writing my book on Hilaire Belloc (Hilaire Belloc, The Politics of Living), I was very conscious that although I very much revere this man and his writings, many people do not, and it was my duty to give a voice to Belloc’s critics, as much as my partiality would allow

Without doubt, the most damning accusation against Belloc was that he was anti-Semitic, and a man who greatly disliked and feared Jews In my book, I give the case for the prosecution as

well as the defence on this matter In my desire to neither whitewash nor excuse, I even included a quote from one of Belloc’s fellow Members of Parliament that appeared to be damning The MP in question was Edward Turnour, Earl Winteron, one time MP for Horsham and Worthing (in the days when the two towns were part of the same constituency) Here is part of the quote from Turnour as it appears in my book –“He [Belloc] made one or two good speeches and then committed a fatal error. The late Mr Harry Lawson (later Lord Burnham), a popular and much respected man, had just concluded a mild and unprovocative speech from our benches when Mr Belloc rose and, in his rather high pitched voice, began, “In extended observation of the AngloJudaic plutocracy….” He got no further This obvious reference to Mr Lawson was received with angry cries from the Conservative benches of “order,

withdraw cad!!”, whilst his Liberal colleagues sat in silent disapproval, which is always a sure sign that a member has made a grievous mistake.”

At this point, the reader of this article might well be feeling uneasy and wondering if this is even an article they should be reading at all So, I should add immediately, that I was able to show instances of Belloc roundly condemning any a notion of a worldwide Jewish conspiracy and that he was an ardent and persistent opponent of Hitler and the Nazis, urging Britain to fight on in 1940 and 1941, when many others were calling for a deal to be struck with Hitler

However, it also turns out that Edward Turnour’s allegation against Belloc was false He never made the speech he was accused of making, and members did not shout out he was a cad while his colleagues sat in stony silence How do I now know it is untrue? Because one reader of my book took the time to search through Hansard, the written record of every speech ever made in the House of Commons, trawling for this supposed speech by Belloc He even put

He [Belloc] made one or two good speeches and then committed a fatal error. The late Mr Harry Lawson (later Lord Burnham), a popular and much respected man, had just concluded a mild and unprovocative speech from our benches when Mr Belloc rose and, in his rather high pitched voice, began, “In extended observation of the AngloJudaic plutocracy….” He got no further. This obvious reference to Mr Lawson was received with angry cries from the Conservative benches of “order, withdraw cad!!”, whilst his Liberal colleagues sat in silent disapproval, which is always a sure sign that a member has made a grievous mistake.

with the House of Commons and the party-political system His appearances in the chamber became less frequent, and when the General Election was called later that year, Belloc decided not to stand for re-election The following year, he gave a speech in Worthing in which he declared that he was “glad to quit the vilest and dirtiest company” it had ever been his misfortune to keep In a letter to a former constituent who was sorry to see him go, he wrote, “one must be inside the House of Commons to see how utterly futile is any attempt at representative action”

In truth, all historians, at some time or another, allow questionable material to be included in their published works Some through negligence, some through a deliberate attempt to add spice to their story, but probably most, for the simple reason that it would take more years than most historians have left to them to check every fact and trace every piece of evidence back to its original source Fake history, like fake news, is an inevitable consequence of the human condition and it is always well to bear this in mind

the phrase “Anglo-Judaic plutocracy” into the online search facility Indeed, a speech came up containing this phrase It was not in the speech by Belloc, but by another MP, AD Steele-Maitland, member for Birmingham East

In his speech, Steele-Maitland made reference to Jewish people in public life and asserted that Belloc would regard this as evidence of the ‘Anglo-Judaic plutocracy’ But, these were SteeleMaitland’s words, not Belloc’s

It is interesting, although not surprising, that Belloc did not object to the speech, nor comment on it, as by this time (1910) he was thoroughly disillusioned

Hilaire Belloc (1870 – 1953) was a controversial figure in his day: a man of many talents but also apparent contradictions too. In this timely assessment of Belloc’s career, Chris Hare examines Belloc’s attitude towards religion, politics, war, the natural environment, and old age and dying. He also looks into the claims that Belloc was anti-Semitic.

Here was a man, who, one hundred years ago, was suggesting that the West ignored religious belief (especially Islam) at its peril, that its politics risked becoming ‘a circus’ and that real power was transferring to the banks and financial institutions. Belloc was also a very humorous man, with a dry wit, famous for his comic verses that lampooned the rich and powerful. He speaks to us very powerfully today at a time when the future appears increasingly uncertain. We may not agree with all he said and believed, but we cannot fail to be impressed by his insights and foresight.

“It is always worth while, think, to hammer at truths which one knows to be important, even those which seem, to others, at their first statement mere nonsense. For though you may die under the imputation of being a man without a sense of proportion, or even a madman, yet reality will in time confirm your effort.”

Hilaire Belloc, writing in 1925.

So, it has to be admitted, that I was guilty of including fake history in my book I took Edward Turnour at his word On reflection, of course, I can see that I should have wondered how objective a Conservative MP would be about a former Liberal MP Steele-Maitland was also a Conservative MP I was rather naïve, wasn’t I? In my desire not to let Belloc off the hook, to show that I was including the views of all those who criticised him in his lifetime, I allowed fake history to be included in my study On the other hand, let no one say I am a Belloc apologist, attempting to cover up his murky past

has his own heritage consultancy, History People UK, which he founded in 2009. Previous to that he was an adult education manager in the public sector.

LOCAL HISTORY INSIDE 19

If you know any football fans, you might have noticed a slight change in their behaviour over the last few weeks

Since the end of May, there may have been a strange lethargy and moping about (particularly at weekends) Partners and friends may welcome this period as it’s the only chance of getting major DIY activities completed or taking a holiday For a committed fan, it is a desert to be survived: the close season for football But fear not! The new football season is here and the excitement of the year stretches ahead of us Every fan will have been waiting eagerly for the announcements, firstly for the Friendlies, then for the League itself, as the next 8 months is mapped out Get your diaries out (or cut and paste in your phone), hoping there are no clashes with family weddings or big birthdays: “Of course we can get back time… as long as it doesn’t go to penalties…” It’s not just the home games to consider, as both our Men’s and Women’s teams are now in Leagues that require travelling to more distant locations: Truro, Weymouth and Weston-super-Mare being some of the destinations for the Men, and Norwich and Cambridge for the Women: “How about a nice weekend away in Bath, Love? Great architecture, some good restaurants” “Are Worthing playing?”

So, the scene is set, and we are ready for the rollercoaster of emotions that can be crammed into each 90 minutes But who will the players be? It’s a time of change, as some move on Will your favourite players still be on the team? There will be new signings, reshuffling the pack and players moved to new positions

At Worthing FC, we have a “Boys and Men’s Pathway,” so there is the potential for boys to start with the Under 14s team

Women’s Pathway” aiming to repeat this success and supply the Women’s team with excellent local players So, there’s the intriguing prospect of seeing players

followed through Youth Team games, progressing and speculating about who might get onto the bench

It’s tempting to look back over the previous season to fuel theories about the outcomes of the next: the Youth teams performed well, the Men’s team reached the playoffs and won the County Cup, the Women’s team won the League Cup and gained promotion, and the First Division Blues of the Inclusive Teams walked away with the Disability League Cup

The Managers have a challenge before them, however, there will have been promotions, with Clubs eager to hold their place in their new League, and relegations, where more experienced and in some cases full time players ‘coming down’ This stirs the mix of Clubs, players and playing styles, all of which must be anticipated to repeat or improve on last year’s successes Everyone’s an expert, of course: “I can’t believe he’s let them go!”, “What’s that going to do to our defence?”, “Where’s the midfield creativity going to come from?” Then there are the ‘friendlies’, giving rise to speculation about what the team’s ‘form’ might be like, with new mix of players, before launching into the Season The Fans

Club House

online forum will be buzzing with theories and everyone “can’t wait” to get down to Woodside and get back into the routine Early season games bathed in the last of the Summer sun, cold Tuesday nights under lights, grasping a pastie to keep your hands warm, freezing rain coming in from the west (spot the experienced supporters with ski boots, gortex jackets, hats with ear flaps and two pairs of gloves), then into Spring, as the weather warms up and we get to the pointy end of things – finishing with nothing less than comfortably mid-table, but hoping for the play-offs and beyond! We’ll hope to see you there

Ensure Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns

Sadly, excessive production and over consumption in our quest for more growth are depleting the Earth’s limited resources Continuing this will destroy the ecosystems we rely on for our survival

Adapting our behaviour, such as re-using our waste could provide a valuable resource For instance, organic waste can be turned into heat or biofuel as well as compost

Over 80% of fast fashion ends up in landfill, but we can re-use far more, some fibres can be used in anaerobic digesters with food waste but far more could be done to use sustainable fibres and support a closed loop (circular) fashion system

Recently, CREW hosted a Subversive Fashion Show highlighting the devastating contribution that fast fashion adds to the climate crisis The workshop was inclusive and fun, and increased our ability to think clearly and act effectively about fast fashion and the climate crisis We can all make changes and opt out of fast fashion (the production of very cheap clothing, often in countries such as India, China and Indonesia, made, and thrown away, fast)

NEXT MONTH

Why not book a session at CREW with “Stitch It Dont Ditch It!”? A repairing, recycling and upcycling clothing workshop held twice a month on Saturday afternoons

Plastic and microplastic waste is destroying the environment and ecology Bio-chemical solutions are needed to breakdown polymers and microplastics Better recycling would help, and more importantly, re-use

If we work towards a Circular Economy, it can facilitate sustainable consumption, providing an alternative to the current wasteful, linear economy CREW plans to offer another talk on this subject in the near future Sustainable materials are an essential part of a circular economy These are materials that can be reused, remanufactured, recycled, or recovered and minimise hazardous waste and greenhouse gas emissions

A transition towards a circular economy requires collaboration across every system and practice that touches the supply chain Researchers, academics, policymakers, educators, health professionals and the general public are included We can also start now within our communities to make this happen town by town, city by city, council by council, working with communities to change lifestyles and consumer habits Imagine a new evolved world using

only sustainable materials, offering unique properties such as natural abundance, low toxicity, affordability and versatility to produce products that only have a positive and practical impact on the planet

Globally, ideally, what is needed to make the leap is Ecocide Law The legal recognition of ecocide as an international crime as an essential protective and preventive deterrent to severe and either widespread or longterm harm to ecosystems (including water ecosystems) See https://www stopecocideearth/ for more information and to join the campaign

LOCAL PERSPECTIVE

Worthing as a tourist town should be focused on sustainable tourismtourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities There are several local companies that have made the transition to becoming sustainable champions You will be familiar with HISBE in Worthing and Bird & Blend Tea in Goring, who are both West Sussex Green Business Champions South by West cafe in Tarring is an ethical business too with core values of sourcing ethically responsible roasters, all their bakes are baked from scratch with vegan ingredients, they are a completely plastic free coffee shop and don’t use or supply single use items, and as a living wage employer promote links between creatives and other independents by using their base to highlight fantastic community working

CREW are excited to announce an innovative new Climate Conference for Worthing on 19th October in a collaboration with Community Works, Transition Town Worthing and Green Tides It will be a call to action from the community to Business, about

working together to reach Net Zero and reduce the severity of the impact from catastrophic climate change together CREW will be discussing what this means globally and then focusing on local impacts on our current trajectory

It will be a chance to share the work already being done within our community whilst spurring business on to show it can be done whilst saving money More to follow on this next month!

Thinking about climate change and ecological breakdown on your own can be scary and overwhelming CREW now has a parent and preschooler drop in group every Thursday morning 10am12pm (term time only) for any parents who would like to enjoy some tea, coffee and biscuits and a chance to chat with other parents who want to make a better world for their children

We also have the Climate Cafe once a month on a Thursday evening to chat about concerns about the future over a cup of tea and with good company

We stand back sombrely and survey the bulge Even though my bit of cupboard is neuroticneat (colour-coded and seasonally grouped) everything is creased, because it has no space around it

“Come on - charity shop time! We cannot need all this”.

We run a rule of ‘buy something, get rid of something’, but don’t always stick to it And while Depop, Marrkt, Vinted, Thrift+, Swish etc are all great, buying and passing it around is not addressing the problem of overproduction

As CREW has recently explored, through their ‘fast fashion’ talks and ‘subversive catwalk’ events, the industry is there to persuade us that our 5-yearold skinny jeans are ‘embarrassingly dated’ And when everyone around you

‘Two pairs of jeans take as much water to produce as a person will drink in a lifetime;

85% of our old clothes end up in a landfill. Synthetic fibres can take up to 40 years to degrade and dyes and chemicals leach into the earth, contaminating water and soil’.

When clothing made of synthetic fibres like acrylic and Lycra is washed, tiny plastic particles are released and work their way into the seas and oceans

is suddenly wearing lovat green, you find yourself subliminally hankering for a lovat green something yourself

The cost of this is enormous, most of it not immediately apparent to us Leah Thorn’s a:dress website explains that: Meanwhile, sustainability marketing adds a new 3 Ps - Preservation (Environment), Public (Society) and Performance (Economy) - to businesses’ usual 4Ps- “Product, Price, Place, and Promotion” Not enough, though, is it?

Fashion is the second mostpolluting industry in the world, after oil and produces more greenhouse emissions than international flights and shipping combined

There’s human costs, too - as we cannot pretend we do not know, given that even mainstream news reports inform us about low pay, modern slavery, dangerous working conditions for

garment workers We don’t seem to care To the extent that events like the Rana Plaza collapse hardly touched our hearts

As soon as we start our clear-out, we falter Once a year or so, there’s a formal funeral; those black trousers, almost never worn, have to go back in In the UK, I feel that I do need a raincoat, a warm coat, a formal jacket and a lightweight jacket

Those 3 blue checked shirts? Do I really need 3? They’re 10 years old and 2 of them were hand-me-downs from the teenagers, but they’re still in good nick, so

I’m loathed to lose them This is hopeless

We put almost everything back, sighing

I feel it’s our capitalist obsession with individual ownership that’s a big problem here Like the book libraries, kids’ toy libraries and car-share apps, I think it’s time for us to be on a clothesshare app They can have 2 of those blue checked shirts, for a start

“It’s cos it’s over-stu ed - look at all the clothes in it!”

New beach wheelchairs available for hire in Worthing

hire a beach wheelchair and, for the first time, enjoyed a day by the seaside as a family It was amazing

“After working with local businesses and the community to run raffles and raise funds, we now have three facilities for locals and visitors to use I am so grateful to all those who kindly donated towards this project

“There’s still a lot of work to be done to make our beach truly accessible, but this is a great start to getting us on the way to being more disabled friendly”

The chairs and rollator provide disabled members of the community with easier access onto the shingle, thanks to their large, inflatable wheels

However, the Council recommends users don’t venture too far down the beach, as the rocky and steep beach profile makes maneuvering equipment back up the shingle very difficult

The introduction of the new chairs demonstrates the Council’s commitment to work with local groups and help make Worthing as accessible as possible

Worthing’s pebble beaches will be more accessible for disabled residents and visitors thanks to the arrival of three pieces of specialist equipment

Following a fundraising campaign led by the local community, two beach wheelchairs and a single allterrain rollator are now available from Worthing Borough Council’s Coastal Office

The equipment is designed to make maneuvering people with disabilities across uneven surfaces easier It has been brought to Worthing to help groups and families enjoy time together on the town’s shingle seafront

Ahead of the equipment being publicly available, two local residents visited the Coastal Office to test the new equipment

After a test ride, Harry Ragless and Carole Harrison provided useful feedback to the Council on how the project could be further developed

The Worthing Beach Wheelchair Fund was created by Harry’s mother, Selina Ragless, to provide disabled children and adults in the area with more access to their local beach

Since launching in 2021, support for the fund has continued to grow and, after receiving funds from a host of generous donors, it raised enough money to purchase a child’s beach wheelchair and the rollator The adult’s chair is owned by the Council

The special equipment has been safetychecked by the Council and a booking system has been set up so that the items can be borrowed for free

Selina said: “The journey to bring the kit to Worthing began when we visited West Wittering Beach, where we were able to

Cllr Vicki Wells, Worthing’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “Firstly, I’d like to say a huge thank you to Selina and the generous public who have made this project possible It’s been a fantastic community effort and I’m so happy to see the equipment ready for public use

“This is a great first step but we know that there’s much more we can do to make our coastline more welcoming for disabled visitors

“Due to the nature of our steep, shingle beach, implementing positive changes won’t be a quick or simple process, but I can assure you that the Council and its members are committed to improving access for all”

Cllr Rosey Whorlow, Worthing’s Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, added: “Spending time by the seaside is not only great fun, but also beneficial for our wellbeing It’s therefore brilliant that the town now has two wheelchairs and a rollator to allow residents and visitors with mobility issues to enjoy our coastline”

To book the equipment in advance, visit the Coastal Office or https://adur-worthing-eforms.onmats.com/w/webpage/beach-access.
