SPOTLIGHT

CASA of Pueblo Making a Difference inPueblo

CASA – Court Appointed Special Advocates serve as advocates for abused and neglected children in Pueblo and across the United States. These children desperately need our support to recruit and train volunteer advocates who give them a voice in court and ensure the best opportunity for a successful future! “Many of our youth are sentenced to live out their childhood in the foster care system; bouncing from one foster home to another until they emancipate” said Zane Grant, CASA of Pueblo’s Executive Director. “One such instance was Cynthia. I first met Cynthia when she was four-years-old and I was her caseworker working in child protective services. I knew back then that Cynthia would not likely be returned home and already had many issues that she would face throughout her childhood that would be challenging for her, to say the least. A few years after I started working as the director at CASA, Cynthia’s case came back to my attention and we knew she needed a Court Appointed Special Advocate. We needed to find someone special to be her advocate, mentor, and confidant. Nancy was one of our seasoned volunteer advocates and agreed to meet Cynthia and serve as her CASA.” After Cynthia turned 18 and left the foster care system, she agreed to share her story publicly at one of CASA’s events to raise awareness about the program. “I almost died…” said Cynthia as she choked back the tears sharing her story. “I am now 18-years-old and I would like to tell you about my journey and experiences growing up. When I was four I was already making sacrifices that only a grown-up should have to make. One sacrifice was not eating because I did not want my two-year-old sister to starve. Every time my sister would break or do something wrong, I would take the blame so she could be fed. I always used to take care of her, but soon it was time for someone else to do the job. We both were sent to my grandmother because my mom couldn’t take care of us-she just gave us to my grandma and grandpa. I felt furious and when I turned ten I was sent to foster care. I kept blowing out of foster homes so they sent me to Children’s Ark. That was the first of my many institutional placements. While I was in one of my placements, I had a blowout and punched through a bulletproof window. I cut my wrist so badly that I almost died-I had only minutes to get to surgery and live. The doctor’s considered amputation, but my caseworker convinced them to save my arm. While I was in the hospital my grandma tried to come and see me, but no one was able to get her there. So, I was by myself in the hospital. It was very hard to be there alone. I was on a lot of pain meds and had to learn to walk again and use my left hand and arm instead of my right hand. It was a sad time for me without anyone I knew to help me through it. To this day my right arm is numb and doesn’t move in certain ways. This was one of the first of many times that I had to deal with problems alone or with a stranger to help. In my lifetime, I have been in 21 placements; all those places and I still felt very alone because my caseworkers and therapists kept changing frequently. I didn’t have any one there for me. I was on my own and that made me sad and mad! I really didn’t have anyone I thought cared about me. Three years ago that all changed and I’ve had someone that’s always been there for me - through thick and thin. She taught me lessons that I thought I’d never learn. For example, she told me you have to accept yourself before anything can change. She helped understand that I was worth something. I think I’ve

taught her some things, too. My CASA, Nancy, visited me in my treatment centers. Sometimes I was rude and not very nice to her but she stayed with me and never went away. She told me that she didn’t waste time on ‘losers’ and since she was still there, I must not be a loser. On my 16th birthday she brought me chocolate cake and presents - it was nice to have someone to celebrate with. When I left my last treatment center, she was always available. It was easier to talk to her because we could go for rides, buy stuff and find my favorite goodies. I called her a lot and she was very nice about driving from Pueblo West to the south side to talk to me or take me places. I’m out of the system now, but Nancy is still with me. She’s always available by phone-even when I’m being a brat. She tells me to count to 100 and call me back when you are calmer and can talk to me. She has spent many hours in the emergency room when I did stupid stuff and hurt myself. She doesn’t let me get away with things, but does listen to me whether I’m mad, sad or glad. Late night phone calls to talk are okay (most of the time). It’s nice to know I won’t be alone -there’s always someone out there for me - no matter what! Nancy says I’ve matured since she first met me. I know I have a long way to go, but I know she’s helped me to be a better person.” CASA Volunteers make a difference in every life they touch!
