next best thing.

In the Light of What We Know by Zia Haider Rahman

o it must be good, right? Sadly, that's not always the case—especially when it comes to crime thrillers and dystopian YA fiction. But here are some current and recent books we think actually live up to the best-seller hype.

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

Screw best-seller lists, this book won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Just in case you haven't heard anything about it yet, here's an overview of the plot: An orphan named Theodore Decker winds up in possession of a very important painting named "The Goldfinch." What follows is a coming of age story full of art and love.

The Vacationers by Emma Straub

If you can't escape to a remote tropical island this summer, reading this book is the

Who better to tell the tale of the finical crisis that defined the 2000s than a former Wall Street investment banker? In his debut novel, Rahman draws from his actual life experiences to give this story just enough realness and edge. It's only been out since April and has already been called "the novel of the century" by some.

This book’s subtitle sums it up perfectly: "The Authors of Freakonomics Offer to Retrain Your Brain." Even if you aren't familiar with their earlier stuff, this book from Levitt and Dubner stands alone. The goal is to teach you to think like a freak— i.e. more productively, more creatively, more rationally. It's also witty and fun to read—which you might not expect if you never read "Freakonomics."

The Maze Runner by James Dashner

This Is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper Coming to film Sept. 12 Siblings reunite at their childhood home for a week of sitting Shiva after their father dies. We know the plot doesn't 010 1

Want to know how Amoruso went from dumpster diver to eBay seller to founder, CEO and creative director of a $100 million plus online fashion empire? Yeah, we do too. In #GIRLBOSS, Amoruso gives up all her Nasty Gal secrets to success, plus tons of takeaway one-liners like "You are not a special snowflake."

Think Like a Freak by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner

sound like a comedy, but trust us, it is. Jason Bateman, Tina Fey and Adam Driver play the Foxman siblings in the film, directed by Shawn Levy.

othing is better than being able to say, "I liked the book better" when your friends are talking about movies. So if you're looking to do some reading this summer that will pay off later, here are a few novels that will be making their way to the big screen this year.

#GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso

Coming to film Sept. 19 If you're into YA fiction, then you'll probably like this book, its two sequels ("The Scorch Trials" and "The Death Cure") and the upcoming movie. Dylan O'Brien, of MTV "Teen Wolf" fame, has signed on to play the lead role.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Coming to film Oct. 3 At least one person has probably offered to loan you their copy of "Gone Girl" in the last year. If not, that's probably just because you were the one offering up your

Just incase your summer reading list isn't long enough already, here are a few notable titles coming soon to a bookstore (or Amazon shopping cart) near you.

The Closer by Mariano Rivera with Wayne Coffey

Nothing says summer like baseball and nothing says baseball like Mariano Rivera. Even Red Sox fans agree Rivera is the greatest relief pitcher of all time, and in this memoir he tells how he got there and what it's really like to wear the Yankee pinstripes with pride.

•Hard Choices by Hillary Rodham Clinton (June 10) •I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You by Courtney Maum (June 10) •Perfectly Miserable: Guilt, God and Real Estate in a Small Town by Sarah Payne Stuart (June 12) •Rogues—A collection of new short stories featuring Gillian Flynn, Neil Gaiman and Mr. Game of Thrones himself, George R.R. Martin. (June 17) •The Quick by Lauren Owen (June 17) •All Fall Down by Jennifer Weiner (June 17) •The Last Magazine by Michael Hastings (June 17) •Your Fathers, Where Are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever? by

copy. It's been almost impossible to avoid this best-selling suspense novel and it's only going to become more of a phenomenon this fall when the David Fincher directed movie comes out.

The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks

Coming to film Oct. 17 If sappy love stories are you thing, then Sparks is probably your favorite author. He doesn't stray far from his usual fare in this novel, which is about high school sweethearts who reunite in their small hometown after many years away. James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan will star in the film.

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

Part 1 is coming to film Nov. 21; Part 2 Nov. 20, 2015

Dave Eggers (June 17) •The Arsonist by Sue Miller (June 24) •Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng (June 26) •Friendship by Emily Gould (July 1) •One Plus One by Jojo Moyes (July 1) •Liberty's Torch: The Great Adventure to Build the Statue of Liberty by Elizabeth Mitchell (July 2) •Four: A Divergent Collection by Veronica Roth (July 8) •Glow by Rick James with David Ritz (July 8) •Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty (July 29) •Lucky Us by Amy Bloom (July 29) •The Invisible Bridge: The Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan by Rick Perlstein (Aug. 5)

If you're into "The Hunger Games," you've probably already read the entire trilogy—twice. But just in case there are any late-bloomers out there, here's a reminder that the first movie about the last book is coming out this November. So you've got plenty of time to finally get on board and root for Katniss.

Wild by Cheryl Strayed

Coming to film Dec. 5 In the summer of 1995, a novice 26-year-old hiker (Strayed) set out to hike the Pacific Coast Trail in an attempt to get her life back on track. This winter, we'll get to see Reese Witherspoon reenact that 1,100-mile solo hike.

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

Coming to film Dec. 25 "Unbroken" is a war drama based on the life of Olympic athlete Louis Zamperini. The film is produced and directed by Angelina Jolie and scripted by Joel and Ethan Coen. You're probably familiar with Hillenbrand's first book (or at least its movie) "Seabiscuit." inweekly.net

2012 breakout comedy, inspired by Steve Harvey's best-selling book "Act Like a Lady, Think Like A Man."

They Came Together A campy romantic comedy staring Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, from the creators of "Wet Hot American Summer." Transformers: Age of Extinction

Begin Again Keira Knightley stars as a

here's no better place to escape summer and its unbearable heat waves than a dark, overly air conditioned movie theater. In fact, we believe this is where the entire notion of "summer blockbusters" came from. Even though two of the biggest films of the season are already out ("X-Men: Days of Future Past" and "Maleficent"), there are still plenty of buzz-worthy flicks on the summer movie horizon. And even if big-budget blockbusters aren't your cup of tea, there are more than enough comedy sequels, dramas and indie features to go around too. Our personal must-sees this season include a '30s-style dramedy about a psychic, a French tale about flowers growing in unlikely places and Garden State II (we know that's not the real name, but it should be). We'll probably end up seeing 22 Jump Street too—how do you say "no" to Jonah Hill?

Edge of Tomorrow An action flick staring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt that’s based on a Japanese novel. The Fault In Our Stars A drama about two

teens who meet and fall in love during a cancer support group. Don't forget your Kleenex.

22 JumpStreet A buddy cop comedy sequel starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 An animated action adventure sequel featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel and Kristen Wiig. The Rover Rob Pattinson in a movie where he's not a vampire—what else do you need to know? Jersey Boys A musical biography of the Four Seasons, based on the hit Broadway play. Think Like a Man Too A sequel to the June 5, 2014

Life Itself A documentary and cinematic farewell to Roger Ebert.

And So It Goes A romantic comedy staring Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton.

Boyhood A Richard Linklater movie filmed over 12 years with the same cast that tells the story of growing up through the eyes of a boy named Mason. Ethan Hawke (it is a Linklater film after all) and Patricia Arquette star as Mason's parents.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Andy Serkis

is back to entertain and freak you out as a genetically evolved ape.

Jupiter Ascending Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum—two names not commonly associated with "action" movies. But this might change that.

A Most Wanted Man A modern spy

thriller featuring Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe and one of Philip Seymour Hoffman's last performances.

Sex Tape Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz play a married couple whose sex tape goes missing. Happy Christmas

Anna Kendrick stars as an out of work actress who moves in with her brother and his family and pretty much ruins everything they have going on.

Get On Up A biopic about the legendary James Brown. Guardians of the Galaxy Chris Pratt as

a pilot/astronaut? Not sure we're buying that, but the trailer is actually pretty entertaining. What If Harry Potter + Adam from Girls = a movie we're destined to love, no matter what it's about. But this one

The Expendables 3 Here's hoping the

for his lover after she's diagnosed with an unusual illness caused by a flower growing in her lungs. Sounds like a perfect plot for French filmmaker Michel Gondry to us. Bonus: it stars Amélie herself, Audrey Tautou.

Wish I Was Here Zach Braff took to Kickstarter to make this film a reality, so it better be good. Or we're going to demand a refund on our donation. Hercules Dwayne Johnson

(who we still call "The Rock" if we're being honest) stars as the Greek demigod in this Brett Ratner directed adventure flick.

Magic in the Moonlight A '30s-style

dramedy from Woody Allen where Emma Stone is a psychic and Colin Firth is the man set out to prove her a fraud.

The Giver A sci-fi thriller staring Alexander Skarsgård and Meryl Streep. actually sounds like a modern day "When Harry Met Sally" so it should be good on all accounts.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The

heroes in a half shell are back.

Let's Be Cops Jake Johnson (aka Nick from "The New Girl") stars in this cop comedy about two friends who aren't really cops.

If I Stay Chloë Grace Moretz stars in this sure-to-be-tear jerker where she's caught between life and death for one day. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For A sequel

to the 2005 film, featuring returning cast members Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, Powers Boothe, Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis.

When the Game Stands Tall The story

of football coach Bob Ladouceur, who took the De La Salle High School Spartans from obscurity to a 151-game winning streak. 11

Forecastle Fest

angout Fest is over, but that doesn't mean there's not more music in bulk to be found this summer. If you're looking to plan your vacation around a music festival, here are a few suggestions. But they still have some pretty solid lineups and are happening in cool cities.

here's so much in the air during the summer—humidity, mosquitoes, fireworks, and, of course, plenty of must-hear new music. Jack White is an early front-runner in our "song of the summer" debate with 'Just One Drink.' But there's still plenty of time for someone to beat him (and they probably will). Here are some contenders, plus their release dates and new album titles.

Jack White "Lazaretto" First Aid Kit "Stay Gold" Andrew Bird "Things are Really Great Here, Sort Of…"

Strand of Oaks "HEAL" Mastodon "Once More 'Round The Sun" Robin Thicke (title TBA) Sia “1000 Forms Of Fear” Jason Mraz "Yes!" Jenny Lewis "The Voyager" Shabazz Palaces "Lese Majesty" Steve Aoki "Neon Future"

Lana Del Rey "Utltraviolene" Bishop Allen "Lights Out" Ed Sheeran "x"

Did you know that locally we're lucky enough to have not one, but two weekly concert series that run throughout the summer? And both are free to attend? Yup, it's true.

Sure, you don't watch it. You actually can't stand the show or the Kardashian/Jenners. Good for you. Some of us, however, think the Kimye wedding and accompanying circus is going to make for really good bad TV.

Rising Star

ummer isn't the greatest season for TV (that’s fall's thing) but most networks do save at least a few gems for the sweltering season. Some have already started—like "Game of Thrones"—but they aren't going to last all summer, so you're going to need a few more shows to kill time with.

Series premiere June 22 on ABC Just what the world needs—another singing competition show. This one will feature Josh Groban, Brad Paisley, Kesha and Ludacris as the "experts" but the audience picks the winners and losers.

Tyrant

Season 2 premiere June 6 on Netflix We can't think of a better way to kick off a lazy summer of TV watching than binge watching all 13 episodes, can you?

Series premiere June 24 on FX An unassuming American family are drawn into the workings of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation in this drama, from the producers of "Homeland," "24," "6 Feet Under" and "Lost."

Keeping Up with The Kardashians

Wilfred

Orange Is the New Black

Season 9 returns June 8 on E!

Season 4 premiere June 25 on FX

Elijah Wood and his furry friend are back for another season of this dark comedy series.

Big Brother

Season 16 premiere June 25 on CBS This show is still on? Who knew.

Bob's Burgers

Season 5 premiere June 29 on Fox There's a lot to like about "Bob's Burgers"—like the quirky animation and awesome voice work by Kristen Schaal. If you aren't already watching it, you should be.

Unforgettable

Season 3 premieres June 29 on CBS Poppy Montgomery is back as Carrie Wells, an NYPD detective with a flawless memory.

Under the Dome

Season 2 premieres June 30 on CBS Apparently one season of being sealed off from the world in a massive transparent dome wasn't enough.

Extant

Series premiere July 9 on CBS

A sci-fi mystery thriller starring Halle Berry and produced by Steven Spielberg. Not sure why either of these two are doing TV, but we'll take it.

Welcome To Sweden

Series premiere July 10 on NBC A New Yorker marries a woman from Sweden and agrees to move there for a year. Cultures clash and hilarity ensues. Amy Poehler produces the show and her little brother Greg is the star and creator.

Food Fighters

Series premiere July 22 on NBC Remember Adam Richman from "Man Vs. Food?" He's got a new gig on a new network. Even though we're kind of tired of chef competition shows, we'll probably watch this one just to see if Richman tries to eat everything they make in one sitting.

The Quest

Series premiere July 31 on ABC What happens when an Executive Producer from "The Lord of the Rings" teams up the creators of "The Amazing Race?" "The Quest."
