DAGESTAN is a place of extreme natural beauty with a wealth of traditional craftsmanship and a glorious ancient heritage. The FC Anji football precinct and, in particular, the Stadium, becomes a landmark heralding the return of the republic to the global stage. The Stadium serves as a monument, a beacon in the landscape.

The treatment of the site provides ordered open public spaces and is a counterpoint to the existing dense and degraded urban landscape. Like the Spanish steps in Rome, the approach and plaza enables habitation and public interaction. The FC Anji football precinct generates social and economic upliftment for the region and attracts visi-

tors from far afield to experience the richness of the place. Most importantly it facilitates a common cultural identity around which citizens from diverse groups can feel a renewed sense of local pride.

Derbent as a cultural and design reference The treatment of the sports precinct landscape is strongly influenced by the ancient city of Derbent in the south west of Dagestan. Known as the oldest inhabited city in the world - established over 5,000 years ago, Derbent is a UNESCO World Heritage site. “The city has an important strategic location as it forms a natural pass (the Caspian Gates) between the Caucasian foothills and the sea. For many centuries, it was thus in the position to control the traffic between Europe and the Middle East. As a result of this geographical particularity, the city developed between two parallel defense walls, stretching from the sea to the mountains.

Our design references the gravitas of the stone structures and the way the Derbent Fort sits on its steep site and manages level changes to create a compact and secure inner zone. As a modern tourist destination these terraces and changes in grade create a sense of adventure and a variety of commercial opportunities.

level changes ensures the delivery of parking, seating and the complex hierarchy of arrival and access to facilities.

Site treatment of the precinct The FC Anji Football precinct becomes an element in its landscape. The entire site is landscaped to create areas that are elevated, on grade or excavated. This variety in grade facilitates varied experiences and resolves many of the operational requirements of the amenities in the precinct. Maximum use of

adventure - an experiential journey. A system of platforms, ramps and stairs guides the visitor through the hardscape allowing for interaction and pauses along the way.

The Approach and Stadium & Arena public space Just as a walk from sea to mountains involves meandering and exploration the approach from the canal in the East towards the Stadium and Arena is an

and commercial opportunities, and heighten the anticipation of arrival. Once they have climbed to the plaza visitors enjoy a structured, open space that allows for circulation to the Stadium and Arena and is also available to them as large public park.

are on grade with the pool of water around the stadium. This very effective natural barrier enforces the security required to keep the public away from the VIP and players secure zone and ensures visitors’ access to the stadium is through the designated Northern and Southern entrances.

The Training Facility and fields Further West is the training facility and an outdoor The training fields to the West of the sports precinct pitch that sinks into the landscape to create three

thousand seats on its embankments. The west stand seats are covered with an accessible green roof that will be used as a steep incline for training routines. With the Stadium as the focal point in the precinct it is necessary for this smaller stadium to be discreetly integrated into the landscape.

The Stadium design As spectators make the journey up to the plaza they are met with the sight of two simple but awe-inspiring cubic forms in the landscape. Their meander terminates at the plaza where two minimalist gleaming white boxes, one dominating the other in scale and presence rest. At night the two translucent boxes glow from within creating beacons that are visible for miles. The stadium box sits within a pool of water – reflecting the light envelope in its surface and evoking mountain pools. Water cascades from one level to another adding an element of sound and movement to the still white box floating above it. Spectators pass be-

neath the pool to enter the stadium on the Northern and Southern elevations, into the ingress gates, enclosed space reminiscent of a mountain cave. From there they access ramps on all four corners of the stadium, ascending these to the stadium concourse. This creates a unique experience of moving from the Northern and Southern plaza dominated by the water feature and cascades into the glowing interior of

access points to the upper plaza means this space can be used as public space or for special events as the need requires. The play on opposites – dark and light, reflective and matt, heavy and light, hard and soft – increases the elemental tension and power of the Stadium’s presence. It becomes a monument, inspiring national pride and is a symbol of the regeneration of the re-

the envelope. Stairs from the main plaza to an upper plaza allow visitors to be on the same level as the pool of water. An outdoor screen is mounted onto the stadium envelope here allowing spectators to watch the game with the big screen reflected in the pool. Controlled

gion. Stadium circulation VIPs, players and match officials enter at level 0 on the West of the stadium in the secure zone. Level 1 accommodates the media, retail and admin-

istrative functions of the stadium. Flexibility of design at this level means that areas such as the mixed zone and media box can double as conference space when matches are not being played. Spectators enter the stadium from level 1 on all four corners of the stadium. From here they make their way one level up to the concourse for seats in the stadium bowl or continue higher to a suite or seats in the upper stands. Ramps on the 4 corners of the stadium operate as the vertical circulation for the stadium. As spectators climb these they overlook the water and the public space plazas below through the glazed corners of the stairwell atriums.

On concourse level there are views across the bowl from the concessions and sanitary facilities, allowing spectators using amenities to still feel connected to the atmosphere on the pitch and to the scale of the stadium. Sanitary facilities and concessions are arranged opposite each to ensure these lines of sight and to create a feeling of a high street on the concourse. On the upper concourse sanitary facilities and concessions are together on the inside of the concourse, under the stands above, and stacked above the amenities on the concourse below for plumbing and services. This design allows light from the faรงade into the upper concourse.

Stadium Atmosphere Delivering the drama and atmosphere that will attract people from all over the world to watch a live match is key to the bowl design. A deep lower tribune is carved out of the landscape to create a tight space where intimacy and excitement are heightened. The legacy tribune is achieved by removing the North and South stands on the upper level (30% of seats). The best seats on the East and West sides of the upper stands remain to maintain bowl atmosphere.

The unconventional use of a rectangular box instead of a round envelope is used in both Stadium and Arena. The Stadium and Arena compliment each other and the repetition of their design elements reinforces the power of the overall design concept for the precinct.

of heavy and light, matt and reflective. The gravitas of the solid base that hugs the ground is balanced with the light translucent box floating above it and the reflective polished stone on the plaza is balanced with the matt translucent envelope.

Pitch Similar to the Stadium, the Arena explores the duality level dictates level 0 in the Stadium and Arena and

as the stands are different in the two buildings their entrance levels vary. Most of the vertical circulation for the Arena is managed outside the building in the external hardscape - spectators climb up from plaza level to access the Arena entrance on the East and from here circulate in the spacious translucent atrium that faces the canal, lake and Caspian Sea.

The heritage of Greco-Roman freestyle wrestling in Dagestan is referenced in the design of the training facility, paying homage to Dagestan’s dominance in the sport on the world stage. The training facility is to the south west of the sports precinct, past the training fields. Its form sits on its site like a pair of wrestlers, interlocked in a moment

of perfect counter balance. As with the Stadium and Arena, it expresses a dynamic duality, a Yin & Yang relationship, between its elements - light and dark, light and heavy, void and solid. Large double volume spaces above the indoor pitch and swimming pool on the North elevation and the

upstairs terrace form glazed framed voids. Single volume spaces accommodating administrative and medical facilities are low slung solid blocks in the South elevation. As with the adjacent stadia, a limited colour and materials palette adds to the simplicity and dynamism of the form.

Stadium Income Generators In today’s completive market, diversification of income streams has become an imperative for any club or stadium operator. Apart from the most obvious form of income, namely ticket sales, there are a number of other income generating opportunities available for clubs and operators. These include: • Club Seats • Luxury Suites • Stadium naming rights • Parking • Advertising • Concessions • Restaurants • Facility Tours • Retail Stores Club Seats The concept of club seats has been around since the 1980’s. Club seats are wide luxury seats that are

located in a position that offer the best view of the game. The seats are leased at an annual fee and leased for a period of 10 years. The spectators occupying club seats are given preferential treatment which includes amenities such as screens to watch
