WELCOME BACK!

WELCOMING: Jordan MacQuarrie

Welcome back, everyone! After a well-deserved break, it’s time to get right back into INNIS life: second semester is packed full of some of the best events of the year:

Innis College rings in 2016 by welcoming Jordan MacQuarrie as the new Assistant Dean, Admissions & Operations at the Innis Residence. Jordan will be joining the Innis Residence team in the administration and admissions process for the residence, along with the summer business operations.

We are right in the middle of WINTERFEST – UofT has events this whole week, welcoming the students back! There is information on the upcoming events on page 2. INNIS FORMAL will be coming up at the end of February – an Innis favourite! You can see some more of last year’s photos here! For some of you, this is the last beginning-of-semester at Innis – the annual GRAD GALA will be held this semester, as well. You can see last year’s photos here! … and there will be so many more exciting events to come! Make sure you have bookmarked the ICSS Facebook Page and the OSL Facebook Page, as they often have event details there. And, of course, keep reading this biweekly newsletter for information on events from Innis and from around UofT!

Continued from front page… A former Woodsworth College student, Jordan remained at U of T after graduating in 2012 with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Political Science. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience with him, having spent the last few years working for Housing Services and Woodsworth College Residence. When he's not off travelling the world, Jordan spends his time riding his motorcycle around the city and taking improv comedy classes! Don't let the helmet fool you: Jordan loves meeting new people and experiencing new things. Please help welcome Jordan to Innis College!

SOCIAL: INNIS ♥s VIC SOCIAL FRIDAY, JANUARY 29TH STARTING @ 9PM Victoria College, The Cat’s Eye Come out to Victoria College’s The Cat’s Eye Student Pub for a night off with Victoria College students! There will be an open mic night, games, and lots of food and drinks! INNIS LOVES VIC!

INNIS OFFICE OF STUDENT LIFE CAREER EXPLORATION: CHAT WITH KATE BOWERS WEDNESDAYS, 12PM – 2PM Innis Residence, Lobby Are you starting to think about the steps to take for your career? Come by the Innis Residence Lobby to chat with our very own Career Educator, Kate Bowers, who visits Innis on Wednesdays between 12PM-2PM – she can help! You can stop by to upgrade your job search skills, prepare your resume for job or graduate school applications, practice interview skills, or make a plan for after graduation. It’s never too early or too late to start considering your career options, especially if you are feeling uncertain or confused! On Wednesdays, Kate is available in the Innis College Residence Lobby for drop-in questions or conversations. Or you can email her in advance at kate.bowers@utoronto.ca to schedule an appointment.

SKILLS FOR SUCCESS: TOM’S POPCORN TALKS MONDAYS, 5PM – 6PM Innis Residence, Events Room Starting on January 18th, Tom MacKay will be holding a weekly “popcorn talk” in the Innis Residence Events room from 5PM-6PM and everyone is invited! Each session will include a quick and energetic "microtalk" on a specific issue, usually (but not always) about money. And each session will have a different flavour of popcorn. On top of that, courtesy of the Office of Student Life, there will be a selection of drinks! Who is Tom? He's an Innis College Associate Registrar, specializing in financial issues, and pretty good at overall question-answering. Here are the first two topics: JANUARY 18TH: THE POST-HOLIDAY BUDGET BLUES JANUARY 25TH: SCHOLARSHIPS 101: WHAT’S OUT THERE They are all free, informative, and fun, not least because: popcorn. Come check it out!

INFORMATION FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS: PHOTOS Grad Photos will be taken at the Innis College Residence (Events Room) the week of Jan 11th. You must have your photo taken to appear in the Graduating Class Composite. Included in your photo session are 9 unique digital online proofs and an 11x14 copy of the class composite. The sitting fee is $20.00. Hard copy proofs may be purchased for an additional $5.00 if desired. You must sign up online to book your appointment! To do so follow these 2 easy steps: 1. Visit: lassmanstudios.com/dcs_sched/ 2. enter "in16" in the school ID to access the schedules. (Click on 2016!) 3. Find a time that is convenient for you and book it. If you are a Fall graduate, or you cannot make it to that photo session, please contact questions@lassmanstudios.com to arrange for an alternate date/time for your grad photo session. Please wear a white blouse, or a white shirt and tie. Robes, degree hoods, and traditional graduation props will be available for you at your shoot. If you would like to bring in a personal prop for your photos , feel free to do so.

INFORMATION FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS: OSAP REPAYMENT “WEBINAR� If you want to connect online to live "Webinars" about repaying OSAP after graduation, dates have been extended into the end of January. These are put on by the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC), which is the body that administers this process when the loans are consolidated. So, they're the first best resource for this information. You can find available sessions here.

INNIS RESIDENCE SOCIAL: WELCOME BACK TACO PARTY SUNDAY, JANUARY 17TH 12PM – 2PM The IRC is proud to present: Taco Party. Come socialize with your fellow residents in the events room from 12pm to 2pm and grab some delicious, all you can eat tacos. We will be serving beef, chicken, veggie, gluten-free, and dessert tacos! This event is for Innis Residence residents.

AROUND UofT GET INVOLVED: JOIN THE GOVERNING COUNCIL Make your voice heard! You can contribute to the advancement of the university’s goals, find out about issues and processes, and gain great new skills by becoming an elected member of the Governing Council. UofT is committed to having a strong student voice on its Governing Council, so why not throw your hat in the ring? All of the information that you need can be found here.

HART HOUSE: THE 34TH ANNUAL LITERARY AND POETRY CONTEST DEADLINE: FRIDAY, JANUARY 15TH Are you ready to get published? Short fiction not more than 3000 words and poetry of no more than 250 lines can be submitted to the HUB at Hart House. The 1st prize winner will be published in the 2016 Hart House Review. 1st Prize $150 / 2nd Prize $100 / 3rd Prize $50 The winning authors will be announced at the Hart House Review launch and contacted by the Hart House Literary and Library Committee in April 2016. CAREER EXPLORATION: ATTEND A RÉSUMÉ BLITZ FRIDAY, JANUARY 15TH 3PM Sidney Smith, Lobby This Friday, in the Sid Smith lobby, you can meet with Career Centre staff for suggestions and advice on your résumé. 100 slots are available, on a first come first-served basis. Bring your résumé and job description for which you are applying! Be there before 3:00pm to ensure you get a spot. Check out the event listing for more information!

GO ABROAD: 2016 SUMMER ABROAD PROGRAMS DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 11TH (FRANCE) & FEBRUARY 15TH (ALL OTHER PROGRAMS) Earn a full-year UofT credit in 3 to 6 weeks and explore the world as you do it! This summer, there are over 40 courses being offered in 20 different locations! Information about each program is available here. There will also be specific information sessions for each program held throughout January and February. In these sessions, the available financial awards will be explained, as well. The applications are available now! Applications for the France Program will be due February 11th, and all other applications will be due on February 15th. Detailed information and all application forms are available on the Summer Abroad website!

SKILLS FOR SUCCESS: FRESH START CONFERENCE SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6TH 9:30AM – 4:30PM Bahen Centre Now is your time to thrive: The Fresh Start Conference is a one-day conference on Saturday February 6, 2016 for students who have experienced academic struggles at UofT. Build resiliency skills and learn how to bounce back from academic stumbles! If you want to discover how you learn best and hear from others who have thrived after experiencing difficult academic situations, join us for this fun and informative day. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.

SKILLS FOR SUCCESS: iSCHOOL I bet you didn’t know that UofT offers a Master of Museum Studies and a Master of Information through the Faculty of Information! If this is something that interests you at all, you can get all kinds of information on these programs through their Info Days on Saturday, January 16th and Saturday, February 27th! You can register here.

INTERNATIONAL: ELL COMMUNICATION CAFÉ & READING eWRITING FREE high quality English language instruction with the ELL Program will start again in Winter 2016! The Communication Cafe offers drop-in discussions, presentations, and debates, along with learning about Canadian culture (starting January 11, 2016 — no registration necessary). Sessions are facilitated by writing centre instructors. Registration is open NOW for Reading eWriting, online writing practice with a writing centre instructor (starting January 15, 2016). SKILLS FOR SUCCESS: GET INVOLVED, GET HIRED! TUESDAY, JANUARY 19TH 11AM – 3PM Varsity Dome The Clubs and Summer Job Fair will be happening at the Varsity Dome from 11:00am-3:00pm, next Tuesday! It’s an opportunity for students to meet employers hiring for various positions for the summer – employers like CN Tower, Canada Post, IBM, Ontario Public Service, Rogers Media Publishing, Telus, and United Way Toronto.
