Let Your Spirit Sing: I was sitting outside in my backyard one beautiful Spring morning, strumming my guitar as this song magically poured in and began to take shape. It was both an inner call and a celebration in living life consciously, to fully encounter all the beauty and wonder as well as the heartache, all for the purpose of Awakening. A little while later I woke up one morning to the sound of a dove cooing … in his sweet heart-song I could distinctly hear the opening melody to “Let Your Spirit Sing” … That same lilting melody. Maybe I’d heard the melody in the birdsong the morning I wrote the tune, or maybe the bird and I were singing it together … “Open up my heart … Show me how to see … the beauty right before my eyes … in all you’ve given me.” The recording features Grammy Award nominee David Young on Flutes and Backing Vocals and Adelaide musician Heather Frahn with Backing Vocals, Harmonic-Overtone Singing, & Himalayan Bowl. Just A Little Bit More: In 2002 I was living in Upstate New York with my uncle and my father, helping with Uncle Leo’s passing as he was dying of cancer. It was a really difficult time for us all, three men locked up in this cabin together, doing all we could to journey through this very difficult transition period. Being isolated in this way had caused a strong introversion in me, and one day I was at the supermarket, feeling very alone and the checkout girl reached out asking “What’s the accent?” “I’m from Australia,” I replied. Looking gently straight into my eyes she replied back “I love Aussies”. This deeply touched me. When I got back home I picked up the second-hand guitar I had just purchased and the lyrics and music came tumbling through virtually complete. “It doesn’t take much … just a look or a touch … can open the door just a little bit more.” And, as I wrote the song I could clearly feel the passion and presence of the guitar’s previous owner, guiding me through some nice new jazz chord progressions giving the song the distinct jazz flavour, a perfect match for the heart-felt insight that “There’s really nothing to be afraid of, soul searching never led anybody astray. When you find out just what you’re really made of … You’ll open up that door… And blow all those cares away.” And, coming full circle, I invited renowned New York Jazz guitarist, Rodney Jones, to feature on the track. Yield to Love Each Day: After a few years of journeying on my spiritual path this song came through. It’s a love song to the Inner Master within us all. Through my spiritual practice my heart began to open, and the love that flowed in and out, became the gift of constancy that is always available to anyone who seeks out the Divine within oneself. The song is a guide to living a conscious life … “It isn’t always easy, but it’s the only way. Give your love, completely, yield to love each day.” In the arrangement Dino Jag created the perfect atmospheric blend for this song … I remember recording it and being transported into a timeless zone and back again … Here & Now: This song was written around my kitchen table with a couple of friends. I’d just completed a powerful 10 day silent meditation retreat, deeply inspired by the immediacy, accessibility and clarity of the present moment, and the joy and love it always offers. The song was a celebration of the Here & Now, written in a “That’ll Be the Day” chord style … as a bit of fun. Really enjoyed recording this one, with the help of some fabulous Adelaide musos and my old buddy Rob Belgiovane playing the guitar solo. Give It Your Love: I’d just been through a period of deep suffering through the letting go of a “fallen” spiritual teacher. I’d given myself over completely to this particular Master, only to discover his many failings. How could an enlightened spiritual teacher do what he did? The challenge for me at that point was to seek out the Vi-Guru within myself, and so I did. That one we all seek, can only be found within our own hearts, and every road-block and life challenge is put before us to lead us back right there. Where we learn that “It’s not what you’re doing but how you go about it, that holds you down or sets you free. It’s not what you’re seeing but how you’re looking at it that raises you to view reality … So, don’t be fooled by promises that take you for a ride, the only worthwhile promise is that Love awaits you deep inside.” All songs written by Leo Drioli. Just a Little Bit More (2:55) We’re all looking for … Just a little bit more Of what is true, real and lasting It doesn’t take much, Just a look or a touch, Can open the door, Just a little bit more We’re all caught in a spin … Looking out from within … Too distracted by the world to be asking What it is that’s in here … Keeps creating the fear Why not open the door… Just a little bit more You know there’s really nothing to be afraid of Soul searching never led anybody astray When you find out just what you’re really made of You’ll open up that door … And blow all those cares away For then you’ll have found … As you look around … A world that’s true, real and lasting No it doesn’t take much … Just a look or a touch … Can open that door … Just a little bit more
