THE ROOSTER A monthly update from the Inland Empire Offroad Association

What’s New Some members headed to Havasu to play in the dirt recently, and Kris shared it by writing an article.

Summer Fun What are you up to this summer? Feel free to write an article or just send in pics to share what you’ve been doing.

Havasu Without the Lake By Kris Schellinger A couple of weeks ago,Shirley called and asked if Doug and I would like to go off-roading out in the hills behind their house. Jeff and Lavon were coming out and Jerry and Linda and Donette and her husband, Dave were up for the fun. How could we say no?

Coral Pink Reservations The reservation window is open for individual site reservations for this year’s Coral Pink trip. See more on page 3.

After a long drive(I swear Rice Road is the longest road in the history of roads)we arrived at the Fords. The Olivers weren’t far behind us with their new toy box / trailer for the kids and grandkids.

Upcoming Events • May 25-28: Memorial Day Weekend: Start of the river season!

After sitting around and talking for a bit we piled in multiple cars and went to a Mexican restaurant on the other end of town. Food was very good but I think all would agree the company was better.

• July ? - 11: Pre-Coral Pink time in Mesquite. • July 11-20: Coral Pink! This is the best trip of the year for those of us who make it.

The next morning we had a great breakfast prepared by Donette and Lavon and then we got ready for our ride. Donette asked some friends of hers to lead us out to the” cabin” that is about a 35 mile ride. We all got in the RZRs and we rode thru town to meet the friends and then we were headed to the hills. Within less than

10 minutes we had to stop. We all know that going 30 to 40 miles per hour in the dunes is great however, on the hard dirt and rocks it is another thing all together. The Fords and Tranthams turned back and the rest of us opted to stay on the ride.We made it to the cabin in record time filthy dirty from the dust, thirsty and sore.We made it back home in a few hours later in time to clean up and go to the Golden Corral for dinner. Sunday morning, after another great breakfast at Donette and Dave’s, Jerry led us on a great ride along the pole line road. We 2

stopped for “Kodak moments”, snacks, and just for fun. When we got back, Jeff and Lavon got their stuff together and took off for home. Doug and I were staying until Monday (wanted to avoid the Coachella traffic) so we had some time to clean up the Razor, play dice and relax. Bobby and Luann showed up right at diner time. We headed to Red Robin for a not so quiet dinner (let’s be honest, it’s never quiet if Bobby is there) Monday morning rolled around and it was time to head home. Such an awesome weekend.

Coral Pink 2018 is Coming! While the main duning season is winding down, that means for many of us that the trip of the year is getting closer. Individual site reservations are still available, so you can call or go online to get a site if you’d like to join us. This year we will be in the park from Wednesday July11th through Friday July 20th. To make reservations visit: www.utahstateparks.reserveamerica.com and search for Coral Pink Sand Dunes.

Whatcha Been Doing? Here’s some random pics we’ve collected to show what people have been up to in this odd time between desert and river season. John Cole got his transmission apart on a Tuesday night and found the mainsheet bearing had disintegrated. This took out the main shaft, but fortunately the ring and pinion and other gears seem to be ok. Barry Baker has been working on getting their new boat ready for the summer. The Bakers are ready for Memorial Day and their second season as boat owners.

Jim and Nancy Kastle have been on the road for over 5 weeks, spending time in Charlotte, NC and making it to the East Coast in Carolina Beach. They’re having a great time staying in many neat (and often lakefront) RV parks.

Marshall got to go up to Grandpa John’s to play tractors. He’s still a little scared of riding on the big one, but likes watching Grandpa John move dirt, and helps out with his “bicycle tractor” with pedals.

This month we’d like to thank Kris Schellinger for writing about their Havasu trip. As we head into the summer months, we’d love to hear what you’re up to in order to have something to print each month. If you have anything that you want to share, please send it to me at pkastle@msn.com. We will publish what content we have and a calendar of upcoming events in every month’s newsletter, and next month we’ll have our annual Coral Pink Preview. -Paul, Melissa, Allie, and Marshall.
