What’s New

Sand Sports Super Show

The sand show has come and gone, so the sand season is officially here. When will your first trip be?

We had a chance to attend the 2017 edition of the Sand Sports Super Show, and I was impressed with what I saw. It was the largest sand show ever, and yes there were literally hundreds of RZRs there, but it was a lot of fun and there was a lot to see. Below I’ll share some pictures and comments about our visit to the show for those of you who didn’t get a chance to see it.

October at Dumont Our season starting trip to Dumont is coming up on October 5-9th. Some people will arrive as early as Thursday night, and may stay until Monday.

Anza Spook Run Mike Bacon will once again be hosting the Mona Bacon Memorial Spook Run and Weenie Roast on Saturday, October 21st. See more on page 4.

First of all, the show was huge. Besides filling all of the buildings, and the traditional outside areas, there were three or four rows of stuff on the 55 freeway side of the buildings, where the sand swap meet has been the last couple of years. There was a dirt track set up for a Yamaha test drive event where visitors were able to drive the machines themselves. Other side by side manufacturers were represented as well, with a large semi from Can Am and a big booth in the center courtyard from Textron, which recently acquired Arctic Cat. Much like being at Glamis, there were similar looking side by sides everywhere you looked. Sometimes it was worth looking more closely, however, as the LS2 powered RZR 4 seater was in one of the buildings and relatively few people seemed to notice how different it actually was. We also noticed the trend of the same manufacturer displaying sandrails and custom caged side by sides. With the size of some of those machines, and the intricate body work on all of them, there is seemingly less and less distinction between the sandrails and the highly modified side by sides. As

always, while the cars are impressive, most people aren’t there to buy one, but instead there are lots of different parts and 2

accessories available for purchase, ranging from ice chests to goggles, to a wide variety of lighted whips. We saw at least five different LED whip manufacturers, with some prices of up to $300! Rugged Radios was there with three trailers of items for sale, as well as their recent Polaris RZR and General project vehicles. These are impressive builds, and were worth the time to check out in person.

Despite how many RZRs and other side by sides were at the show, we also saw a lot of very nice custom sandrails. While

these are not the economical cars of the past, they has impressive paint and body work and massive tires that really were quite impressive. Many of them must have cost well over $100k. There were some custom side by sides as well, including a “Woody RZR” and a RZR from Gator Wraps that included its own pop out awnings, which could make it quite popular on breaks. There’s no word on whether they deploy automatically when it gets airborne, however. Overall I was out impressed with the huge number of people attending the show, as there were still long lines to get in at almost 2:00 on Saturday. It looks like it will be a busy season in the dunes! 3
