August 2009 Rooster

 As you might have guessed, this month’s main news is Coral Pink. We had a great trip and can’t wait for next year.  We have the annual Lake Havasu trip planned for the weekend of August 14-17th. Make your plans now to join us for some summer fun.  We still need a plan for a location for the club picnic. After several

years of hosting the picnic, Dave and Cindy will be unable to do so this year. Does anyone have any good ideas for a place to hold the picnic? It doesn't have to be a home, we have used public parks or even the sand drags in the past. Please let Jim or any of the board members know if you have any suggestions.

Wednesday: Melissa and I got up at 3:30 to leave the house by 4:15 on our way to Mesquite. The drive up went well, and we got to Mesquite at 11:15. We then persuaded them to let us check in to the nearly vacant (except for club members) RV Park and set up the trailer. We drove around town and cashed in $465 worth of loose change before going to the traditional dinner at Playoff’s Pizza. It was neat that we were able to meet up with Steve and Sharon Porter who were on their way back East on a motorhome trip but spent a few nights in Mesquite with the club. Thursday: We got up and went to breakfast at the Eureka buffet, since the one at the Casablanca is closed on weekdays. Then we packed up and headed for Coral Pink. W had a nice un-eventful drive and went up via the Cane Beds dirt road, which shortens the trip by over 40 miles. We got to the campground and began the process of unpacking, which included getting Shirley’s Ranger out of the front of Walt’s trailer, a process that was complicated by the fact they had ti pull the wheels off in order to make it short enough to fit in. The Tranthoms had arrived at the park from Colorado earlier in the day, and were looking forward to their first Coral Pink trip. Later Jim, Walt, and I went for a ride to the corral to officially begin the trip. Friday: This was a pretty typical Coral Pink day. We got up, went for a ride, and then went to town for lunch. We went to Lotsa Motsa pizza and found that due to inability to find a bread sup-

plier, they no longer have the sandwiches we enjoyed so much. The still have the $5 pizza buffet, and it was good but we are looking forward to getting the sandwiches back. We got back to camp and went for another ride before sitting around the tables and hanging out before bed. Saturday: We started the day with another ride, then took the Excursion into town for lunch and shopping. We ate at a new Mexican restaurant on the North end of town and it was quite good sit down Mexican food. We did some thrift store shopping and even found a garage sale. As we pulled into one thrift store, a nice lady followed us in and mentioned that something looked strange about our rear tire. It had a bubble the size of my fist on the inside sidewall of the right rear tire. We went to the tire shop, but realized that the tire was one that still had a warranty from America’s Tire. We changed it in the grocery store parking lot while Melissa called our Riverside America’s tire and found out they do have a store in St. George. We called them and made plans to go in on Monday to get new tires, since Melissa and I had wanted to take that side trip anyway. We went back to camp and went for another ride before dinner, nice showers, and sleep. Sunday: Since most everything is closed on Sunday in Utah, we stayed in the park for the day. We went for two rides and sat around in the shade of the group site playing games, snacking, and talking. Monday: Melissa and I got up and headed for St. George to get tires and play around shopping in Utah. My parents agreed to watch the dogs for us so we could go by ourselves and not have to worry about them, which worked out great. We decided to go out the dirt road to Cane Beds on the way there, but to come back via Cedar City which is north of Zion. We had a great day and it was neat to have something that was fun for Melissa to do since she is eight months pregnant and wasn’t going on any of the other rides. We got the tire replaced for free, and bought a new matching one for the other side so that all four tires would be new this (Continued on page 4)

month on the Excursion. We went to Costco and lots of Pawn shows and thrift stores, and headed to Cedar City for more shopping and looking around. Cedar City is about 40 minutes north of St. George on I-15 and was a nice place to look around. Then we headed towards camp on Utah 14, a scenic byway that climbs to 9910 feet in about 20 miles. The drive was beautiful, and it went from being 93 degrees in Cedar City to 66 degrees at the peak. We then took Hwy 89 back down to camp and ended a very fun day. Tuesday: This was the day we decided to go to the Thunderbird restaurant in Mt. Carmel Junction for breakfast. We loaded people in 5 trucks and headed out at 8 AM. The breakfast was nice, and they were able to seat the group of 13 people together which doesn’t always happen. The some of us went on into town while Mike and Mona headed to explore Panguitch. Jim and I went to explore trails south of the campground and then went for a sunset ride in the lower dunes to test Don’s carburetor on his car, which he had changed earlier in the day. Wednesday: We started the day with a morning ride with all of the cars and Mike taking pictures. He got some great shots. Then Don lost a belt and decided to head back while Kris Jim, Walt and I went on to the upper dunes. After we all made it back to camp, Melissa and I went into town with my parents and did some shopping and looked for a throw out bearing for my car, since mine was making noise. We didn’t end up finding one, but we met some nice locals who had recommendations on where we might find one. One place even suggested we check at the mortuary, since their son is into VWs. One nice guy said he would check out some old transmissions he had in Fredonia, but later we learned none of them had the bearings. We ended up finding that we had a used one in camp, and Walt offered a new one. We took the transmission out that night and replaced it before it hurt the pressure plate. Thursday: This might have been just about the perfect Coral Pink day. It started with a morning ride with all the buggies. We got some neat video from a camera that we mounted on Jim’s car facing backwards. Don came back early since he was having alternator issues and a little overheating. The rest of us continued on and had a great ride. Then most everybody went into Kanab for lunch. We shopped around some and then headed back to camp. It was one of the warmer days, with the temperature reaching 100 degrees before the clouds came in and it cooled off. We worked on fixing Don’s power steering hose that had popped off and then went for a nice sunset ride. We got some nice video of it, and met up with Kris, Doug, Mike, and Mona on the Rangers for a sunset break. Then we came back to camp and had a campfire at Jerry and Linda’s space, since they had moved into space 5 which is right next to the group site. Friday: We had a great last full day at Coral Pink. We started with a fast ride in the morning and got some good video (Continued on page 5)

of the trip to the corral and back. Then almost everybody went in to town for lunch and to top off on fuel before the trip to Mesquite tomorrow. We got everybody together at the group site for some group pictures and then we went for one last ride. We might possibly have saved the best for last, and we have the video to show that we were really moving. For the first part of the ride we had the camera on Jim’s car pointing back at me, Walt, and Kris, who were all roosting and flying through the dunes. At the break Kris offered to put the camera on her car and we got video of Walt throwing a lot of sand. (Even a little too much for Kris a couple of times…) We then met up with the Rangers and Rhinos just outside the camp entrance for a nice sunset break before starting to pack up. Saturday: This is probably the least fun day of the trip, but it is made better by the fact the trip isn’t totally over yet since most of us get to stay in Mesquite one more night. Kris and Doug and Mike and Mona left early, while the rest of us packed up a little more slowly but were still on the road by 11:00. We gave the Rangers a CD with our pictures on it and told them we were looking forward to next year. Then both sets of Kastles, Walt, and the Fords headed for Mesquite after saying goodbye to the Tranthams who were headed towards Colorado. After an uneventful trip down the steep Hurricane hill we followed Jim through the traffic signal in town, which irritated a Hurricane police officer who pulled up and was waiting to make a right turn. He pulled both Walt and me over, while Don smartly yielded to the nice officer and then waited as he spoke with both of us and gave us a written and financial reminder to yield. We didn’t get any pictures, but I don’t think any of us will forget it anytime soon. We headed on out of Utah and avoided any further misdemeanors on the way to Mesquite. Then we all went to the Eureka buffet for dinner, which was excellent. Sunday: To end the trip, everybody got up and headed for home. Kris and Doug left early, followed by Don, Shirley, and Walt who were headed for Havasu. Jim and Nancy were headed for the river at Cottonwood Cove to meet up with the Coles on Tuesday, and Melissa and I headed for Riverside. We got home that evening and began the process of unpacking and cleaning up after 10 days of duning fun. -Check out lots more pictures and videos from Coral Pink on the website at www.inlandempireoffroad.orgTEACHER: How old were you on your last birthday? DOGS MUST BE KEPT UNDER CONTROL AT ALL TIMES (BLM law) 3. ON A RIDE, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF YOU AND THE VEHICLE BEHIND YOU.
