Who/where do you get your inspiration from?

Looking at inspiration and motivation synonymously, what keeps me on the path are my beautiful daughters, Genevieve and Gwenivere. Without them, I am without my purpose. My ability to channel any talent I may have into a discipline and conduct myself decently throughout definitely attributes to my relationship with my stepfather, Bob. Without him, I would have never had a chance in this life. I feel the day I cease seeking selfimprovement is the day I should just hang it all up. For twenty years, I’ve been fortunate enough to have an amazing best friend and now business partner, Remington (and family). Without them, I’d be way less equipped to meet the best version of myself.

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to the art of tattooing? Entering the world of tattooing, or any creative trade for that matter, is not for the faint of heart, as you will also enter a world of self-doubt if not careful. There’s a fine line between being critical and hateful toward yourself. It’s extremely important to search for the areas in which you can improve, but it’s just as important to do so kindly. And it is easy to compare yourself to the heavy hitters and those with massive social media followings. Be wary of this, as art is subjective, and your success is not directly proportional to the number of followers you have. If you stay true to yourself and healthily seek progress, then you’ve already succeeded. ✕

My name is Kenneth Shaw. I was raised in Arizona. I started drawing at a young age, and motivated by my passion for art, I grew an interest in tattoos. I started a tattoo apprenticeship in 2006 at the age of 20, which led me to become a tattoo artist in 2008. In 2009 I opened my own studio Next Wave Tattoos with the idea of surrounding myself with like-minded artists that want to continue to grow. I wanted to be the best tattoo artist and for my studio to be recognized as the best. In 2021 I was able to open a second location of Next Wave Tattoos.

What advice would you give to someone about getting his or her first tattoo? (A tattoo virgin) The best advice I can give a person getting their first is to get a good night’s sleep, eat before you come, bring snacks and something to drink, and stay relaxed.

What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? My family was a little worried at first. I think they didn’t understand that you can have a career tattooing. They were always supportive of me but just a little unsure at first. Now they are so excited and happy for me.
