About Us

About Us

I

nhabit Media Inc. is the first Inuit-owned, independent publishing company in the Canadian Arctic. We aim to promote and preserve the stories, knowledge, and talent of the Arctic, while also supporting research in Inuit mythology and the traditional Inuit knowledge of Nunavummiut (residents of Nunavut, Canada’s northernmost territory). Our authors, storytellers, and artists bring traditional knowledge to life in a way that is accessible to readers both familiar and unfamiliar with Inuit culture and traditions. Incorporated in 2006, Inhabit Media was born out of a need for Nunavut kids to see their culture accurately represented in the books they read in schools. We have spent the last ten years working with elders and storytellers from across the Canadian Arctic to ensure that the region’s unique Inuit oral history is recorded and not lost to future generations. Many of the stories that we publish have never been written down before, having existed for centuries as tales passed orally from generation to generation. While many of these stories are ancient, we work closely with elders, contemporary Inuit writers, and illustrators the world over to present folktales and traditional stories in a format that will resonate with modern audiences across North America. Our books do not simply provide a glimpse into Inuit culture; they also represent the preservation of oral history and traditional knowledge that may otherwise have been lost, in a format that contemporary readers will find engaging, entertaining, and informative. As the first independent publishing company in Nunavut, we are excited to bring Arctic stories and wisdom to the world!

Known by many names across various regions of the Arctic, the Mother of the Sea is a powerful woman who can withhold the animals humans need to survive if she is displeased by human behaviour. Only a shaman is able to appease the Mother of the Sea and convince her to release the animals that the hunters so desperately need. This version of the tale has been told and retold in Greenland for generations. Aka Høegh is one of Greenland's most well-known artists. An excerpt from “Wheetago War II”

by Richard Van Camp in Taaqtumi: An Anthology of Arctic Horror Stories

As I scanned the horizon and trees, I could smell the fresh, smoky tobacco. The students knew not to distract us as they passed a pouch around. There were four other guards. I remember that. Kateri’s three sisters and a distant man— “Stanley,” they called him—who could drop a Wheetago from a mile away. Stanley was an ace at using his .30-30 to take out the eyes of a Shovel Head. I seen that myself at least five times. What happens when they’re blinded? The others eat ’em. It’s pretty: to see Hair Eaters turn on each other like that. So the teachers and students dropped tobacco and offered it to the earth and to our Mother. “Today,” Norma said, “we give thanks for all we have. My husband’s birthday is soon approaching, and I want to make him new moccasins. Our camp is low on beads, but you can use porcupine quills to decorate just about anything if you know what to do. Lucky for all of you, Aunty knows what to do.” The kids giggled and beamed. I could feel it. No matter what happened after, I can go back to that last exact perfect moment.

n this new collection, Kenn Harper shares tales of Inuit and Christian beliefs and how these came to coexist—and sometimes clash—in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. During this period, Anglican and Catholic missionaries came to the North to proselytize among the Inuit, with often unexpected and sometimes tragic results. This collection includes stories of shamans and priests, hymns and ajaja songs, and sealskin churches, drawing on first-hand accounts to show how Christianity changed life in the North in big and small ways. This volume also includes dozens of rare, historical photographs.

"Our Hands Remember is an important guide to traditional grass basket sewing, rich with details capturing the complex patterns and close stitching unique to the Belcher Islands. This book has enormous value in expanding our knowledge and the ability of subsequent generations to participate in this cultural practice . . . As you read, imagine gathering ivigak in the bitter winter cold and biting off the green and juicy ends of new shoots, found buried beneath the snow, to taste the approaching spring."
