editor's notebook

I can’t believe a year has passed since the initial idea of SPACES

Magazine were being considered in our quaint publishing office. And what a year it has been!

We have received so much support from our readers and advertisers.

We have come to realize the readers are truly impressed to see so much talent and options in this area for home improvement and shopping. We have received many emails asking where they can find the products shown in the magazine and of course, we have sent them to our local advertisers; who in turn have been greatly appreciative. Not everything has gone as planned, however. There are always trials and tribulations when trying to publish a magazine. One lesson I learned is never let the editor edit her own column. I am referring to the last issue where I misused a word. I do know the difference between 'philological' and 'psychological', really!

We are always trying to be innovative and fresh and one way we

accomplish this is with new fonts. I would like to say that I was whispering but in reality the font used in my last letter from the editor was almost illegible. Lesson learned: when you are unsure if there could be technical issues – go with something else.

Although very important, a few grammar, spelling and font issues

almost seem trivial compared to the growing success of the only local high gloss home improvement magazine. Sincerely,

All Letters to the Editor must include complete & accurate contact information & phone number for a response

We would love to hear from you – please send us an email or a hand written note with your questions or comments! The Home Works article on page 32 certainly is a popular topic these days. More and more people are working from home and require a dedicated space to do so efficiently. I am included in this number. Just last month I posted my home office picture on Facebook and updated my status to say “Angela is enjoying a newly organized office – even for a Monday morning”. Through-out the winter it was becoming cluttered, so I started my spring cleaning and completely re-organized the entire space. My office houses both my work computer and home computer for the family. When others need the office, I can take my laptop to another room in the house.

kitchens

p Just like the home, the kitchen is the heart of the cottage. The word or idea of ‘cottage’ has changed over the years. Where it once was a oneseason, quaint, cozy place to vacation for the summer, complete with all the hand-me-down furniture and energy-sucking appliances; now a cottage can be considered a four-season luxury home.

SPACES •Vol 2 - No 1 • InGenius Publishing

Cotta ge kitchens M

ore and more people are choosing to have their cottage (or home) rurally, or semi-rurally, situated on the water and participating in the ever-so-envious ‘cottage living’ as their everyday dwelling instead of owning a home and a vacation cottage. And if they are not there yet, many cottage owners dream of leaving their work-convenient dwelling and retiring to their cottage. With the change of cottage lifestyle, comes the change of cottage designing and decorating. Gone are the days of having a small prep area in the kitchen, a second hand fridge and stove and a small table for those rainy days. The cottage is a place for friends and family to gather and relax, play and entertain, so the space needs to accommodate just that. Today’s modern cottage kitchen is fully designed and equipped with all the luxuries of the everyday home. Large, open kitchens looking into the great room, 360 degree views of the sandy shores and waterfront and gourmet appliances are amenities cottage owners are not overlooking.

A picturesque Charleston Lake home features cottage style essentials. Bead-board detailing, floral patterns and a soft pastel colour palette bring a warm feeling to the space. The glass cabinet doors showcase the collection of colourful dish and glass wares. (photo credit: Corell Custom Cabinetry)

Kitchen elements owners are bringing into their cottage as must-haves are quality material. This includes custom cabinetry and high-end durable counter tops and quality, resilient flooring. It is also important to cottagers to have an open concept common area for entertaining, wall to wall windows with unobstructed views and natural elements with nature-inspired ambiance.

Natural elements like a pine panelled ceiling, hammered cooper farmhouse sink and stone countertops set the backdrop for this lovely St. Lawrence River retreat.

This kitchen is all about the details. A farmhouse faucet, iron hardware adds a classic look. Modern versions of barn-light pendants hung over the island and the metal industrial inspired stools add a unique vintage flare.

5 ways to bring the vintage cottage style from days past: 1. Find elements of inspiration and pieces for your cottage kitchen by visiting flea markets and garage sales – a very affordable style! 2. Another basic way to bring the cottage style to your kitchen is through the use of a casual color scheme. Choose whites, wood tones, pastels and floral patterns. 3. Vintage details will help complete the look of any old fashioned cottage. Vintage inspired cabinet knobs, lighting (re-wired for safety) patchwork seat covers and window treatments and wicker furniture or accessories are a few ways to bring your cottage style kitchen together.

4. Cabinets can be replaced or updated to fit a cottage style. Usually upper cabinets will have glass fronts to display the mishmash of collected dishes. Often the cabinets will have a bead-board detailing, painted white or even eliminating some upper cabinets for some open shelving. 5. The most important element of all – add the whimsy and joy of laughter. Before the days of Satellite and Internet at the cottage, the simpler times were full of playing games, gathering around the common area and taking advantage of time spent together creating those ever-so-special cottage memories.

Space to Improve Dear Spaces,

THE Problem

THE SOLUTION

n on the Our waterfront house has bee ing. I think sell not is and le whi market for a doing some it's time that we considered it properly but we upgrading and try to stage How do we know don`t know where to start. be for the next will s rade upg t righ the t wha in? beg we do re whe buyer and Sincerely, Sandra

1. Get Organized

“Highlighting the elements in the home to reflect the natural surroundings is key to making this property unified inside and out.” Before & after photos courtesy of Reviving Design Flooring supplied and installed by Floor & Wall Centre

It’s easier to work around less stuff. Rent a storage unit and a dumpster and start pre-packing and purging. You don’t want buyers to chip away at the asking price; get all the major projects done next like any upgrades, repairs and painting, so the buyers don’t have to. Bathroom and kitchen updates, as well as fresh paint are important features buyers are looking for. 2. Concentrate on the Main Rooms Start with the main rooms like the living room, master bedroom and kitchen. The kitchen is the heart of the home and your kitchen has three rooms in one; the kitchen area, eating area and a sitting area with a fireplace. Your goal should be to bring all three areas together with some continuity and warm it up. Concentrate on paint, flooring and lighting. 3. Highlight Great Elements Highlighting the elements in the home to reflect the natural surroundings is key to making this property unified inside and out. For the kitchen, choose an earthy colour to warm up the walls like a sand/taupe. Remove the laminate floor as the rest of the main floor has beautiful original wood. A large format tile in a slate look would both highlight the natural stone fireplace in the sitting room as well as duplicate the outdoor surroundings buyers will see from the large windows. Choose lighting that won’t block the waterfront views. Clear glass lantern fixtures will work with both the style of the home and will visually disappear to allow an unobstructed view and bring both areas of this room together.

For a stunning contemporary shower choose a door with clear glass and industrial looking gliding hardware.

Fleurco Kinetik In-Line Shower Door (60” wide)

We’ve all heard the phrase “less is more” but these days it can be hard to live by. Don’t let that stop you from getting this look. All you need is a carefully planned space to make it easy. For example using the same tile on the wall and floor make the transition simple and clean. Don’t know where to start? Read on… we’re here to help! To achieve a sleek modern design plenty of storage is required to hide away the clutter of your everyday items. Strong horizontal lines can be introduced through hardware, suspended cabinetry and long 12 x 24 tiles. Using neutral colours (grey or beige) in varying tones help to harmonize a small space. Inject colour through your accessories which you can change up when the mood suits or trends change. Adding some natural elements to your space, like a porcelain tile with a great wood visual, makes the space look earthy and grounded while still being simple and airy. A freestanding tub can act like a piece of sculpture being the finishing touch on a masterpiece. Floating cabinets and counter tops add a lofty feel and don’t impose or narrow the space the same as cabinets to the floor would. (they also have an added bonus of being easy to clean under!) If you are doing new construction you can opt for a wall hung toilet, or if you are renovating you can replace your old toilet with

one that has a full skirt that hides the trap-way and bolts and continues the streamlined look. A modern shower could have a single pane of glass acting as a shield while being open on the sides. Most showers won’t spray any wider than 5 feet so don’t worry about water being everywhere, it will be contained within the shower zone. Add a niche in the wall to hold your soaps and shampoos to tuck them out of the way so you’re not bumping into them constantly. You can also clear up the floor space within your shower by using a trough style drain that runs across the back wall of your shower with one continual slope to the back. This creates a clean look and allows the water to flow away from where you are standing. It also means you can use different sized tiles on the shower floor. Another great way to achieve the “less is more” look is by using large tiles which offer fewer grout lines resulting in a floor or wall that isn’t as busy. Tile sizes are getting bigger and bigger these days, 12x24 or 24x24 tiles create a more spacious feel, and tile companies now are introducing tiles as big as 20” x 40” which look great and really up the wow factor. (DIY-ers beware! Make sure you use an experienced tile setter when dealing with tiles this size.)

Your Home Inspection

theCOMPLETEpicture

Thermal Imaging, also known as infrared imaging is a technology being used by home inspectors to ensure buyers and sellers get a clear picture of the property. Originally developed during the Vietnam War to find enemy soldiers at night, it progressed to medical imaging, industrial testing and, finally, to the construction trades and building consultation. Home inspections are a visual inspection, we can only report on what they can see. Thermal imaging gives a professional home inspector the ability to see beyond the normally visible.

This is a common problem, and the source cannot, usually, be found without thermal imaging and an experienced, professional inspector.

A professional home inspector, equipped with a thermal imaging camera and properly trained and certified in its use, can find problems with a house that a normal home inspectors cannot.

Your house may be insulated, but that does not mean it is properly insulated. Many times, the insulation contractors are not professional and don't know how to properly install the insulation.

Problems Include:

Thermal imaging can not only find areas of improper insulation but also water and moisture intrusion areas as well as places where cold air is blowing through the insulation and through electrical receptacle boxes. A certified home inspector trained in the use of infrared imaging can give the home owner piece of mind without opening walls and ceilings.

• Water intrusion through the houses exterior covering, whether the house has brick, stone, stucco or siding. • Improperly installed or settled insulation. • Water leaks around windows and doors. • Plumbing leaks inside the house, including leaking pipes, improperly seated toilets, leaky shower pans and bathtubs and water pipe condensation. • Improperly insulated HVAC ducting that have not been properly sealed or that cause condensation dripping in attics and crawl-spaces. • Improperly installed or insufficient insulation in ceilings and walls. • Leaking roofs, skylights, roof vent piping and roof vents.

New technologies are always being introduced to the home market, thermal imaging the best way to get the complete picture before you buy or sell. Unwelcome guests in the attic or crawlspace can easily be detected with thermal imaging due to the difference in body temperature to it's surroundings.

Below we see an example of water intrusion as seen from the inside of the house using thermal imaging during a home inspection. Because a home inspection is supposed to be noninvasive, water intrusion is not always easy to diagnose, water travels in so may ways (dripping, wicking, running, evaporation, condensation, etc) therefore, it is not easy to find the source.

The challenge? Renovate a century-old home to fit a busy family of six. Written by Cathy Howley Photography: InGenius Publishing

I

couldn't resist pointing it out, even though we weren't in the market. It had all the charm and character we love in a Victorian home. The wood work was beautiful, and much of it was still there. It had 10' ceilings on the main floor, 9' on the second, and bonus points for the finished attic with rough in for bathroom. This looked like a great idea! With a little tweaking, a new wall here, take one or two down there...it's called vision. So we put in an offer, drew out the floor plan, and went shopping for new kitchen cabinets, just as we received the news that the offer had been accepted. Now we had to take this three bedroom house and make it home for our family of six. We had a vision, alright. It was an eight to ten week vision, that had us seeing double, even triple by the time it was all said and done... ten months later! Well, OK, let me qualify that, ten months of Neil working on it, mainly by himself, Professionals installed all of the new fixtures and taps, etc. and the kids got involved with the tear-down. The older ones had a fantastic time getting dirty, while the little ones thought peeling off great huge strips of wallpaper was fascinating! Neil worked evenings, weekends and holidays, with a little help from me, the rest of the time. When it came to selecting the colour for the entry hall, we needed it to flow with the mid-shade of blue we used in the kitchen, and the soft yellow we used in the upstairs hallway. We wanted it to be deep, yet inviting and settled on an Indigo shade that has a blackish-purple undertone, and against the white trim, it's stunning! It looks fantastic against the yellow at the top of the stairs, against the blue in the kitchen and against the deep teal in the dining room/living room. The paint is called Orchard Path, and in certain light looks very teal-blue, while in other light, it looks teal-green. this is my favourite room in the house.

Older homes look great in bold colours

We selected well-made stock cabinets with softclosing hinges and drawers and customized them to fit our specific needs. Our crown moldings stained to match, black granite counter tops, white cast porcelain farm sink with apron, and delightfully eccentric faucets all dressed the cabinets up, creating an exceptional look, and keeping us on budget for the kitchen!

The family room is more casual and neutral, with Lamproom Grey on the walls, and a cocoa-taupe wool berber on the floor. the room is comfortable, and cozy underfoot, with the most durable carpet you can buy.

The boys both opted for red and navy. Two walls in each of their rooms are done in Hunting Coat Red, and two in a deep, nautical navy, against white trim, that makes the walls really pop. Combined with age-appropriate bedding and décor each room has it's own personality reflective of our boys' personal styles. The girls were more selective. Our girly-girl opted for a trendy, medium shade of turquoise, with white and purple accents, embroidered bedding with a bold purple and turquoise abstract flower print, a deep purple rug, and modern art, reflecting her vivacious personality. Her sunny, southfacing bedroom is a welcoming place that she loves! Our younger daughter selected apple green and periwinkle blue for her wall colours, with a hint of pink accents, and a great apple green lamp that adds character to her space. She is a quieter personality, with a streak of impishness, and very creative. She's our writer, so her room has an older school desk and chair, for her to spend time writing her stories and letters! The family bathroom with underfloor heating features a large vanity with plenty of storage and a undermount sink for easy cleanups. For the master bedroom in the attic, we finished the bathroom with a shower, completely tiled, and vanity that we actually converted from a small antique reproduction dresser. We sourced a 14” round sink from Kohler, and a short single faucet that spouted just over the sink, nice and compact, which was exactly what we needed for a smaller space. The master suite needed new flooring, so we installed hardwood and finished it on-site, when the rest of the pine and hardwood floors throughout the house were done. We added closet doors to the oversized closet, and Neil spent many hours trimming this room out to look like the rest of the home, on a smaller scale, since the windows here are much smaller.

Auctions in the Digital Age

live in a fast pace, instantaneous world. A world that allows you to speak face to face via Skype with someone 9 time zones away, where a store can tell you which of their sister stores has a particular product and how many there are in stock, where from your computer you can conduct your banking, pay your bills, go shopping and order dinner for delivery. The list goes on and on. Time is a valuable commodity and there is just no way to stretch your day to 25 or more hours. Auctions in the past have been a venue for finding that much sought after treasure or that comfortable extra chair needed for the home. Traditionally auctions have been a very social place where people gather to seek a particular decorator piece perhaps to put the crowning touch on a room. At auctions there are always surprises. Often something that you hadn’t considered pops up and “Eureka!” just the item to fit your need. Although the auction room can be an entertaining, social event not everyone has the time to attend. Virtual attendance has now become available via Online Bidding. Regardless of your busy schedule you now have the opportunity to sit down, at your convenience, whether it is over your morning cup of coffee, 12 noon or 2 a.m. and preview the auction on your computer screen. With a simple click of a button, at the time that suits you best, you are ready to place your bids. The auction house will acknowledge your bid by return email and if you are outbid you will also be notified giving you the opportunity to raise your bid. It’s easy, fun and has taken a small amount of your valuable time and yet, you have not missed out on the opportunity of purchasing that special piece! The modern day auctions have moved into the Digital Age!!! Carrie Hands, CAI, CPPA Hands Auction Service Ltd.

Set the stage and create the lifestyle buyers want to enjoy

Photo credit: Georgette Photography Oh, just think of the scenarios: You are having a lazy Sunday morning and the calming ripples from the lake are close enough to your Muskoka chair that you feel a cool touch as the water glides up the smooth shore rock and makes a tickling presence on your toes. Or maybe you are lying on a lounge chair, reading your favourite novel, realizing you read the last sentence three times because you are distracted by the multiple screams of enjoyment, followed by splashes; you look up and quietly assess the children are accounted for and put your head down with a smirk and continue reading. Does that sound a bit dramatic? Not if you are a potential buyer dreaming of owning a property on the water or a backyard retreat with a swimming pool. They are already imagining what their family will be doing and what their lifestyle will be like. Your job as a seller is to make it as inviting and well-maintained as possible. You need to set the stage and create the lifestyle buyers want to enjoy. If your property has a pool, you need to make it a positive element. Buyers do not want to see a dirty, green pool, rotted decking or chipped concrete. This is the season for your pool to shine. Keep swimming pools sparkling clean and any repairs to the deck or pool surround should be addressed immediately. A fresh stain should be applied to the deck around the pool. Design an attractive grilling area and seating with patio furniture and dress it up with pillows, rugs and colourful flowers. As a water-view property, you need to ‘highlight the money’. In other words, the primary focus for the potential buyer is the view. Have a professional window cleaner polish both the interior and exterior windows that is showcasing the main selling feature. This will help dramatically but you also need to let in as much natural light as possible. For any home that you are selling in the spring/ summer months, it’s important to remove heavy drapes and valances and replace them with white sheer curtain panels or opaque roller shades. Cut down any overgrown bushes or trees that may block the light coming in through the windows. People need to be comforted by their surroundings. If a buyer is looking at a home on the water, nature likely appeals to them. So bring the outdoors in by creating the same hues of greens, blues and earth-tones you see from your windows looking out. Extending the colour pallet inside will give the illusion of a calming and unified space. In addition, adding natural texture and textile elements will create a sense of Earth’s warmth and comfort. Textiles such as cotton, wicker, rattan, hemp, and jute are all materials that are inspired by nature. Natural floors such as wood, cork, stone are all flooring materials that feel natural and inviting under foot. With cottages, sellers should show potential buyers what life on the water is really like. Set a few Muskoka Chairs around a fire pit area; buyers will visualize a bonfire, roasting marshmallows to the sounds of their children giggling with the sticky-gooey fingers. Hang a hammock between two pine trees so buyers can see themselves taking an afternoon nap in the breeze after mowing the lawn. Set up a classic board game in the screened in sun porch so a family can envision themselves waiting out a summer rain storm. There are lots of possibilities for getting your property to stand out and it doesn’t have to be expensive but it has to be accurate. You only get one chance to make a positive first impression to buyers and less than a twenty second chance before they move on to the next house. Selling your house is more than just sticking a ‘for sale’ sign on the front lawn and hoping to get some kind of offer. Get creative, entice their senses, you deserve to sell your largest investment for its maximum value.Home Stagers are trained in creating spaces directly targeted to the majority market of buyers. We know what the clients are looking for in different types of properties and what best suits the home’s features. Having a Home Stager provide a consultation could save you thousands.

How do you set up a home office that functions well, looks professional and suits your style? A local designer gives you his take on getting your 'home work' done right!

HOME WORKS By Mike Dezoete, Designer, Heritage Kitchens

With the advancement of technology, especially over the past decade, the ability to work from home has become very convenient and easy, some would say almost too easy. Whether this means extending the 9-5 work day, running your own business, or just managing the dayto-day activities of your home, a dedicated space makes these tasks possible, maybe even enjoyable! In the past, a large desk with room for hard drives, printers and those large cumbersome monitors was required even to do the simplest of tasks. But with the advent of lap tops and iPads, a simple workspace like that on an island or kitchen table can often do the trick for smaller tasks, especially with a wireless network setup, eliminating the mess of wires previously necessary. But there is always a need for a space that can be dedicated to “work”. A place that can be setup to function as an office where the day's

work which isn’t quite completed can be left for another time without interfering with any other activity and the storage needs of such work are met effectively. This is where having a home office comes and cleans things up. When planning a home office you need to determine what you require from the space. Are you bringing in clients or other persons from the public for consultations or presentations? Is a private room better suited to the work or will a common-area be sufficient? What kind of storage is needed and how much? Will you be the sole person using the space or will coworkers/employees or family members also be working there? Once the functional needs have been addressed you can go about the design process, adding in your personal style to ensure the space is one you’ll want to be in. This is where working with

If built-ins are not an option, then free standing desks can also accomplish much of the same. Many come with optional hutches, file drawers and shelving which can be configured to fit most spaces. With plenty of finishes available, you’ll be sure to find one that fits your homes décor with the added convenience of portability if your needs change over time.

One of the most critical components to any office, whether built-in or not, is seating. No matter how well the space looks and functions it’s the comfort factor that will win out. And if you can’t enjoy it, you won’t use it. Take the time to shop around and find the chair that suits you best. Options like lumbar support and height adjustment are valuable features. Chair styles have also evolved to more casual or elegant designs instead of the institutional office chair we all know, allowing you to seamlessly blend your home office with the rest of your home décor. With a little planning and professional direction, your home office will be a pleasure to work in to matter how mundane or tedious the task. Who knows, you may even want to spend more time there than in the Lazy Boy! A beautiful desk with an adjoining hutch can function as a home office anywhere in your home.

a kitchen/cabinet designer helps put it all together. Using built-in cabinetry is one of the most efficient ways to take care of all storage issues while maintaining a proper fit and custom feel adding value to your home. Appropriate size drawers for supplies and files, custom cabinets to hold specific hardware like printers, and pull-out shelves to easily access materials are invaluable in proper organization. Just like a kitchen, the flow and function in a home office is just as important and working with a professional will ensure everything fits and looks great!

Looking for a change? For an instant makeover, toss a few pillows into your décor for a fresh style. Throw pillows are a quick and inexpensive way to transform a room; which makes it one of the most fun decisions to make when decorating. The use of decorative pillows allows you to express your personality and adds your own style to the space. Draw your color inspirations from area rugs, furniture, window treatments and artwork. Adding decorative pillows that pick up the colors in the opposite side of the room will give your decor a more cohesive look. To achieve a customized and layered design, use multiple fabrics, colours, sizes and patterns. Here are a few styles to look for: Size: choice different sized pillows and layer them. A larger pillow with substance (1) creates a perfect foundation for placing smaller pillows in front. Colour: A great way to colour a room is by popping hits of colour. This bright pillow (2) will punch up the space. A more pastel hue (3) releases a calm expression.

Pattern: Soft or bold patterns can enhance any space and make it feel complete with your own personality. This bold style (7) gives off some definite pizzazz. A more whimsical pattern (8) can showcase your fun side or a monochromatic pattern scheme (9) will enhance a classy conservative style.

Stay on trend this spring and toss an orange pillow onto your furniture. Orange is a must-have accent colour this season. (11)

Fabric: Texture is another great element to layer your design. Fabric with sheen (4) will reflect light and a heavy texture (5 and 6) will add richness to the room.

Shape: Add visual interest by choosing shapes beyond square. Round, rectangle (10) and bolster styles will give a space a thoughtful pillow dimension.

Are we Boxed In?

Everyone loves to shop and with the recent economic challenges, we all need to save whenever we can. This is where the 'chickenegg' dilemma confronts us. The simple fact is 'big-box' shopping means you can save on those everyday essentials - but what is the truth? Every time you decide to shop at a big box store, you may jeopardize the stability of your local economy.

What are the facts about the 'big box' take-over, does it really matter if you choose to shop at a local independent retailer verses a 'big-box' store? If you think global warming is an issue - think about the real effects of the 'big-box' invasion on local economies. There are significant studies about the effects of 'big-box' on local economies, often they are ignored and media coverage is sparse, but, burying your head in the sand won't change the facts. According to a study done in the United States, three times as much money stays in the local economy when you buy goods and services from locally owned businesses instead of large chain stores, according to an analysis, which tracked the revenue and expenditures of eight locally owned businesses in Midcoast Maine. The survey found that the businesses, with had combined sales of $5.7 million in 2002, spent 44.6 percent of their revenue within the surrounding two counties. Another 8.7 percent was spent elsewhere in the state of Maine. The four largest components of this local spending were: wages and benefits paid to local employees; goods and services purchased from other local businesses; profits that accrued to local owners; and taxes paid to local and state government. Using a variety of sources, the analysis estimates that a national big box retailer operating in Midcoast Maine returns just 14.1 percent of its revenue to the local economy, mostly in the form of payroll. The rest leaves the state, flowing to out-of-state suppliers or back to corporate headquarters. The survey also found that the local businesses contributed more to charity than national chains. Canadians should realize just how important small businesses are to the business sector and how small-to medium-sized companies need our support just as much as the big box stores and bigger corporations. Smaller businesses are a huge driving force of our Canadian economy and without the support from local consumers, the little guys can’t survive. We are pretty lucky to have the support of our small-to mediumsized businesses in our community, as they are often the ones who give money to local charities, sponsor the local hockey teams and give generously to community projects. They are the driving force of our local economy that feeds the provincial and national economy.

According to a June 2011 Statistics Canada report, small to medium-sized businesses, which have less than 500 employees, accounted for more than 54 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) in the non-agricultural sector in 2005. The number of small businesses (which have fewer than 100 employees) in Canada is also growing, with 98 per cent of businesses in Canada considered to be small businesses, according to July 2010 stats. Local small businesses are crucial to the Canadian economy, and their impact is sometimes taken for granted. Although the big box stores provide variety and generally cheaper prices, shoppers need to also remember the local shops. The larger corporations are not the only ones who drive the economy in Canada, they are not the only ones who are supporting our financial market, nor are they the only ones who help provide economic stability in the country. It is the smaller stores who help support Canada’s economy and will continue to make the national economy strong as long as they receive the support from their fellow Canadians. So, what do these facts really mean to your community? Will choosing a big box store truly have an affect on you? Think about this... a local retailer owner will spend 80% of it's profit in the local market through wages, advertising, community support and personal spending. A big box retailer will spend a mere 10-15% and in addition, will most often offer minimum wage salaries, part-time hours and limited benefits. A majority of the revenue will not only leave the community, but in some cases, will leave the country. The cycle of shopping big box to save money due to economic hardship will simply escalate when you choose not to support local business. You have a choice to make, will you continue to advance the bottom line for corporate America or grow your local independent business community? It's up to you. My advice? Spend that extra few dollars with a locally-owned business, you never know - you could be creating a competitively waged job for someone close to you or an opportunity for a local sports team, charity or maybe (who knows) a better life for yourself and your family right here at home. Are we boxed in? I hope not. Make a change in your community - choose local, choose your independent retailer and watch your community grow, it's up to you.

As first time customers of Corell Custom Cabinetry we found the service to be excellent. From the beginning to the end, from choosing a suitable kitchen, to installation, everything went flawless. Having a custom kitchen/bar/book shelves/hutch to the dining room table is not an easy task. It turned out to be an enjoyable experience. The extra design of our dining area, book shelves, bar, dining room table and vanities, etc, selection and design went very well and was organized. We found that cost wise was fair and workmanship was very good. We would not hesitate to call Corell Custom Cabinetry if every needed again for anything.
