VILLE Brockville is known as the “Pride of the St. Lawrence” but those of us who live here just call it “home”. I have been lucky to have lived in many places, both big cities like Calgary and truly rural places like the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia, but of all the places I have lived, Brockville is my true home. Brockville is a perfect combination of small town values and big city amenities, our downtown is rich with history, evident in the architecture lining King St., the waterfront which was once the “highway’ for those who settled this area and the abundance of parks and walkways. Merely minutes from downtown you find a growing retail sector with offerings all the conveniences associated with our larger urban neighbours.

in style. The Brock Trail is a 6 km scenic pathway that runs along Brockville’s beautiful waterfront and through city parks. ormer Brockville mayor Ben TeKamp is no stranger to challenges in life. He started the first of his three terms as mayor by dealing with a major natural disaster, the Ice Storm of 1998, and ended his political career in order to deal with kidney failure. A successful kidney transplant (from his daughter, Robin) put him back on his feet again – and back into the classroom of the Self Employment Benefit (SEB) program.
love what you do, you’ll eventually break even and eventually make a profit,” he promised us. He warned us from the start that we were going to work hard in our eight-week course –and we did – but he fostered an atmosphere of fun and cooperation as well. When we started in May, some were hesitant to speak out and few of us understood what a business plan is or how powerful a motivator it can be; by July we were sharing our plans and giving each other ideas to make them better. Ben TeKamp is an outstanding “people” person. Everyone who graduates from his SEB course knows he’s always there to advise, not only during the 30week financial support period after the course ends, but any time we need to hear an encouraging word.
For the past few years, this classroom has been where he has taken up a different challenge: to show budding entrepreneurs how to write a personalized business plan and to prepare them for their own challenges as small business owners. Today numerous small businesses in Brockville, such as Cranks Bicycle Shop, Savvy shoes and Healthy Pets, wouldn’t exist had it not been for Ben’s help and the SEB program. The program, for eligible people receiving employment insurance, is delivered here for Employment Ontario by both the Grenville and the Thousand Islands Community Futures Development Corporations. I was a participant in the spring 2008 SEB course and I can confidently say it wouldn’t have been near as informative or entertaining with any other teacher. Ben came armed with (in his favourite phrase) “a whole host” of stories of highly successful entrepreneurs and sad failures. To these he added examples from his 27year experience in the telecommunications industry and as a local motel owner for five years. In his folksy way, in stories and tips laced with humour – often at his own expense – he helped us believe that if we had enough skill, determination and preparation, we could succeed in our chosen business, whether it was a retail operation, a trade or a service. Step by step he showed us how to get started in business and how to stay there. “You’re going to agonize over money, but if you

In
a perfect world, your heart would not stop – suddenly, unexpectedly, painfully – at age 45, 55, or 65, as the hearts of a half million North American women and men do each year. It would pump bravely on, just breezing by the seemingly impossible odds to survive well past your 100th birthday. Yet too often, this fist-sized always-beating muscle machine is done in by everyday temptations (the bacon cheeseburger, the double re-runs of your favorite sitcom, the extra helping of pecan fudge pie!) and the modern conveniences and gadgets of our fast paced world. What’s more, we often live in states of intense stress that boost the levels of damaging stress hormones and leave us little time for the heart-nurturing company of our family and friends. Is it really possible to live a super-heart-healthy lifestyle? Yes, absolutely – clinical experiments and investigations of some of the world’s oldest living people (in Okinawa, Japan) concur that a simple and traditional lifestyle that prizes serenity and
spirituality, daily exercise and a slow, low-calorie eating practice that’s light on saturated fat and heavy on fruit, vegetables, soy and fish will do just that! What’s more surprising is that further studies of longevity have shown that genetics are responsible for only 20% of the super health - which means that if North Americans adopted a similar approach, we would put most of our coronary care units out of business. Ah, but wait you say – my doctor will fix me, give me the chemical cocktail that will keep my cholesterol low and my blood pressure calm, that will ease the pain of a complaining heart and then I can have my double-double, greasy doughnut and “refreshing” cigarette. And if that fails, I can always get a new heart, right? Wrong! Within six years of their first heart attacks, 18% of male survivors and 35% of female survivors will have a second attack. Of those that survive, one in five men and one in two women will live the rest of their lives with disabling fatigue and worry of heart failure; many ultimately need heart transplants and die waiting. The path to a healthy heart is best traveled with small steps. Only this way does healthy living become simple, automatic, even pleasurable.

So, where to begin? Well, the fact that you are reading this article shows that you care enough about your heart to start making healthy changes for its benefit. And that’s great news, but if you are one of the folks who may not have even thought about your health during recent years, it can also be a little overwhelming to tackle eating, exercise and lifestyle habits all in one day. A better plan is to talk to your doctor first and find out where you need the most help and start there. Maybe you may just need to add a healthy breakfast of oatmeal and fruit, and take some almonds to work with you for a mid-afternoon snack – that in itself may curb your evening snacking habits. What about parking at the far end of the parking lot and taking the stairs at work – this is active living and, added up over the week, can equal a considerable amount of time exercising without getting changed into fitness gear and
paying membership costs at a local club. Need help everywhere? Don’t despair, just pick one area that you think would be the easiest to tackle first and go from there. Small steps are easier to adjust to over the long haul, rather than trying to change everything all at once. And remember to share your plans with your family and friends, they are your best supporters and everyone needs a cheer leading team for motivation and accountability. Better yet, have them participate with you – enlist your partner in finding healthier recipes and shopping at the local markets with you, take your kids and dog to the park or on your after dinner walks and make it a challenge to see how many days you can go without saying “oh well, I think I’m fit enough now”. Not only is it more fun but the time flies by and before you know it the streetlights are on and you need to come inside! Fun? Yes, fun with a smile – it really is easy to begin today to make just one small change and before you know it your health and your heart have improved. Look at it as an investment towards your arterial health – the returns? Priceless! And finally, don’t forget to reward yourself on achieving results – celebrate with a shopping trip for that new CD you’ve been wanting or, a new pair of fitness shoes or better yet, new bicycles for the entire family! United Way of Leeds & Grenville Annual Fundraising indoor Triathlon

On Saturday, Nov. 23 we are giving 20 area teams their chance to see if they can come out on top in this year’s edition of the Indoor Triathlon. The event, the third annual, see teams of two completing a 1.5 km swim, 25 km cycle, and 10 km run at the Brockville & Area YMCA. Partners can tag each other off as many times as they like, and the clock will stop for transition times.In order to register each participant must be 19 years or older, sign a waiver form releasing the United Way and their members from liability and each team must collect a minimum of $300 in pledges (per team).The team that raises the most money will receive three minutes shaved off of their final time.

Dukakis comments to the effect.... “I’ll bet she paid $500.00 for that dress and didn’t even bother with a girdle!” She then goes on to drawl.... “Looks like 2 pigs fightin’ under a blanket!”, referring to the woman’s profile on the dance floor. I’ve seen that movie several times and that line always gets to me! It’s the epitome of the profile none of us want. The kids are finally going off to University, you’ve decided to downsize to a smaller home, you are selling your home or simply surrounded by clutter. These are all good reasons to de-clutter your home.
honest, if you’re the same age as me, (a tad over forty) you will probably never wear a size four again.
My nineteen year old daughter recently moved into her own apartment and I find it strange that although she no longer lives here - her “junk” seems to have stayed behind. I am completely surrounded by the vast amount of childhood memorabilia (aka junk) she refused to part with... until it was time to pack! So, if you are like me, de-cluttering is an absolute must!
An easy way to determine what to keep and what to dispose of is to remove everything from your closet. Make three piles, the things you wear now, items you haven’t worn in the past year and items that are stained or damaged. Be brutal...if you haven’t worn an item for the past year, you probably never will. Donate these to friends, family or community groups. Only allow yourself to keep the clothing you know you will wear! Yes, that means it’s time to say good-bye to your favorite red miniskirt with the rhinestone fringe. An additional alternative is to take your clothing to a consignment store, these stores will sell your items for you and you will receive a percentage of the sale. But, keep in mind many of these stores will not accept items that are too old, damaged or stained. Many will also accept jewellery, purses, shoes and accessories. This is a great way to re-coup some of your investment.
Now that you’ve made up your mind, don’t put it off! De-clutter one room or even just one closet or drawer at a time; it’s not as difficult as you think. Most items can be donated or recycled, there are many community groups that appreciate donations of clothing, furniture or household items – but, only if they are in good condition! Items that no longer work properly or clothing that has worn out can be disposed of using a variety of services, one such service is “Goodbye Junk”. They will come to your home, give you a free estimate and take away any items that you no longer want. Goodbye Junk will donate any suitable items to local charities; it’s a simple process to de-clutter your home and your life. There are also local companies that will come into your home and help you organize and de-clutter. Clothing is one of the most common items we tend to hold on to long after we need them. DE-CLUTTER! Many of us have too much furniture in our homes, we often find it difficult to let items go – or we simply don’t know where to dispose of them. Yard sales are a great method, but be sure to clean everything and present it properly. If a yard sale seems like too much work, donate to a local charity such as Goodwill or the Salvation Army. It is a great way to support your community. Keep in mind, Brockville has a “treasure-hunt” day. You simply place your unwanted items by the roadside, and ‘wa-la’..someone takes it away. (this is also a great way to get new “junk”, but that’s a different article.) We all know the importance of de-cluttering when selling your home, there are many shows on T. V. that highlight how vital this step is to attract buyers. Investing in a storage locker for a few months, packing up items you don’t use
or won’t be needing until the move will make your home more appealing and seem larger to potential buyers. But, de-cluttering isn’t just reserved for the home-seller, it’s just a great way to make your space easier to live in - everyone hates to be surrounded by “junk”. Diana Dodge-Phillips is the recently appointed Executive Director of The Brockville and District Chamber of Commerce.
A
native of Brockville, Diana was born in 1960 and spent her childhood in Cardinal Ontario. In her late teens she moved to Switzerland for a year, but returned to attend University at Queens and St. Mary’s in Halifax. Although she graduated with a Geography degree and minor in English, she decided to follow her family into the hotel industry. Diana spent the past twenty five years in the hospitality industry working with companies in the full service and limited service hotel sector. Some of these companies included Delta Hotels, Comfort Inn, and Journeys End Motels. After sixteen years in Toronto, Diana has returned to Brockville to reside with her family, (husband, Doug Phillips, two children Jackson and Juliana and their friend Darin Llorca who moved to Canada from Singapore six years ago to assist with raising the children. Diana’s father continues to reside in Brockville but winters in Florida where her brother Tim also lives. Due to the fact that her husband’s family also live in Brockville, this move from Toronto put them in the hub of family connections. Diana took over the role of Executive Director at the Chamber of Commerce in Brockville bringing with her years of experience. She was involved in many hotel organizations and continues to sit on the Choice Hotel franchise advisory board. Diana was involved with the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce in Toronto, where she held a Board position for the prior four years before coming to Brockville. She resigned as the Chair of this Board to take the Executive Director position here in Brockville.

Diana holds the vision of the Chamber as the “Voice of Business” in Brockville and District and it is an entrusted responsibility that she does not take lightly. “I recognize that I am speaking on behalf of my membership and therefore need to know what they think and believe. The Board and I are keenly aware of this fact. This is why I have hired a dedicated Membership Services person to solely be responsible for customer sales and service. This way we can be in touch on a more consistent basis with more of our membership, hear their feedback and react to assist them with their business opportunities.” The Mission statement of the Chamber is to foster a competitive business environment in the Brockville region that benefits the people of this region through the growth of jobs, wealth, and quality of life. Diana says, “The last part of this statement affects us all. I take it to heart that I can make a difference not only to your business but to your life and therefore your family’s. I have small children and as a business owner, I want to know there are people out in the business community that believe they can make a difference. I do! I know that with 100% effort, I am able to make the community a better place not only to do business but to live. And, at the end of the day if it is a better place to live, it will be a great place to do business. The current economy is unpredictable. It will affect us all in many ways that we can’t foresee now. The good news is that the economy is always moving and although it can move down, it can also move up; it is cyclical. It will be strong and flourish again, but in this time of uncertainty, we need to adapt and look at new thoughts and ideas. We can all benefit from this, if we look outside
Diana believes that with her experience in the Tourism world, her business experience from the past twenty five years coupled with her family’s business expertise, has equipped her to support our business community and enhance the opportunities for our community here in Brockville and the District. The Chamber in Brockville is a strong one, and has excelled in many ways that a number of smaller city chambers failed to do. Some of these areas are the social networking events, the high quality standards of performance, and being an advocate of tourism and small business in the community. These are some of the reasons this Chamber recently received the Accreditation Award with Distinction from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Brockville is one of a handful of Chambers NOVEMBER 2008

ourselves and look to others. I have always believed more heads bring more ideas, and some of my best ideas came from someone not remotely attached to my field. It is the philosophy of the out of the box thinking, that we hear so often. This time is a time of partnerships. We need to work together and see how we can help each other in business. This winter we will be putting together some networking forums to bring that theme to life for our members.” Diana offers this advice to the chamber members, “In the days ahead I encourage our membership to be active, and include us in your thoughts and plans, helping us to support you and letting us know how we can better serve you. We all need to know more, do more, and plan more so that we can truly achieve our best results. Look at the business next to yours and ask yourself, is there a way we can partner to help each other in these tough times? Maybe it is worth a look? ” The Chamber offers many things, and while some may not be of benefit to your business, there is such a variety of valuable tools, choosing not to be a member of your local Chamber of Commerce is eliminating a valuable resource for your business.
“Talk to us before making the decision not to become a member, and if we can’t pass on some worthwhile ideas, we can understand your reasons. The key is to ensure you are making an informed decision.” Looking forward to our community’s future, Diana shared her thoughts. “Brockville is at a time of opportunity. I see it, as do many others that have returned to this area. I have met many Brockville natives and many that are new to the area and once here, they are amazed at the untapped potential we hold. Our city is taking this opportunity and looking to the future in updating the Official Plan of the City as well as, doing the strategic plan, the service delivery reviews, and looking at the plan for the waterfronts’ development. Now is an exciting time to be in Brockville and to be a part of what is happening in our city. It is part of the attraction for my family to be here. We are a community that is looking to the future and determining where we will be positioned. To be a part of that, we need to be involved. I encourage people to participate in any of the forums or public meetings, so we can shape our futures together. If you belong to an association or group - be active, and be a part of the future.” Diana expressed her feelings for Brockville, “We live in one of the most beautiful places on earth and we need to protect it, but - at the same time, encourage visitors to see what we have to offer. Tourism can provide a vibrant opportunity for our lives, our children’s lives, for our businesses to excel, provide learning from others and also provide financial gain. This is an area where Brockville has been moving forward in a great way. Mini Cheesecake PREP TIME 20 Min COOK TIME 25 Min READY IN 45 Min Yield 6 cupcakes INGREDIENTS 1/3 cup graham cracker crumbs 1 tablespoon white sugar 1 tablespoon margarine, melted 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup white sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 egg Fresh or frozen fruit of choice DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease a 6 cup muffin pan. In a medium bowl, mix together the graham cracker crumbs, sugar and margarine with a fork until combined. Measure a rounded tablespoon of the mixture into the bottom of each muffin cup, pressing firmly. Bake in the pre-heated oven for 5 minutes, then remove to cool. Keep the oven on. Beat together the cream cheese, sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest and vanilla until fluffy. Mix in the egg. Pour the cream cheese mixture into the muffin cups, filling each until 3/4 full. Bake at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) for 25 minutes. Cool completely in pan before removing. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Top with fruit just before serving.

orts & Recreation Why it matters to our community
Written By: Dawn Edgley Sports enthusiasts or athletes are drawn to the word “sports” - while others skip over the word entirely, assuming the subject doesn’t apply to them. Brockville is well known across North America for producing some high profile athletes and individuals who are held in high esteem in the sporting world. But sports are not just about being a top performer. Sport is a continuum or part of a sequence of distinct elements that include: active living, leisure, recreation as well as professional sport. The truth is, “sport” affects each and every person in our community. Sport and recreation in Canada is gaining more attention by the government. We, as Canadians are advocating for more government support. In the last Federal election, The Canadian “Sports Matters” organization developed an “I believe in the power of sport campaign”. The core strategies of this program include more financial support, infrastructure funding, innovative tax measures to encourage greater participation in sport and the formation of an agency responsible for sport and physical activity policy implementation. All of this directly affects our community. We have close to one hundred sports and recreation groups and clubs, over thirty sports clubs, eight workout facilities, golf clubs, rinks and ball diamonds throughout and around the city. We are still in desperate need of more public facilities and upgrades. We are, without question, a very active community and proud of it! City councillors have recognized the need as well. In August of 2008, City Council supported the development of a ‘Sport and Recreation Advisory Committee”. The focus of this committee is to collaborate with local clubs and organizations, to address issues relating to sports venues such as facility upgrades and equal access, to access government funding, event and marketing support, program development and to promote health and well being for city residents.

community; it our responsibility to ensure that every child has an opportunity to participate and benefit from what sports and recreation can provide. Sports can help them live confident, happy, healthy and successful lives. “Living in Brockville” magazine goes into the corners of our community. We hope over the months our reports on sport, leisure, recreation and active living will prove to be informative and interesting. We will feature local clubs and organizations within our community and provide the information necessary to be educated and informed. Dawn Edgley is a sports & fitness advocate in Brockville, she pursures challenges through her active position as the Member Services Coordinator with “Downtown Brockville”. An active member of our community, Dawn continues to work dilengently to educate Brockville in regards to the important role fitness plays in living healthy. Look for additional editorial from Dawn in future iisues of Living in Brockville Magazine.
In addition to high profile athletes, Brockville is also host to many high profile events. The city is reviewing the logistics and requirements to host even more. This affects us all on multiple levels. The economic spin off is the most obvious as it makes a significant contribution to the quality of life our community. Events such as the Can Am slow-pitch tournament brought 450 players to the ball diamonds in and around our community for three days this past summer. Brockville Sports hosted the 2008 Ontario Masters East Regional Track and Field Championships bringing athletes into the city from Montreal to Toronto. We have received vast recognition for winning our bid against Edmonton to host the 2010 Canada 55+ games and for hosting the eastern European nation’s top junior hockey team from Latvia before they head to the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championship tournament in Ottawa. Most importantly, we see how sport and recreation strengthens a community. It creates a social network for families, coaches, volunteers and supporters. It brings families closer together by providing opportunities for them to share activities. For our children, it not only gives them physical health. Numerous studies have proven that it also provides them with increased self esteem, respect for themselves and others, a sense of purpose and aids in development of new friendships and crime reduction. Sports teach important life skills that will useful as our children grow into adults. Children are the future of our

Kit Vincent is a full-time studio artist who lives in Elizabethtown, Ontario, Canada. She has always loved art and fabric. In 2002, she retired from a corporate career to dedicate all her time to this pursuit. In the beginning Kit focused on developing a body of work made up of pieced fabrics which she hand dyed. More recently, her focus has been on acquiring a better understanding of how fabrics can be manipulated to enhance the tactile nature of the quilt. Kit is an avid enthusiast of most textile mediums and techniques that can be combined and translated into a new visual vocabulary. She quilts using non-traditional techniques, relying on improvisation and working directly on the wall. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is through art that I discover more about the world I live in. I am inspired by human and natural events, both historical and current. This interest usually expresses itself through the exploration of line, colour, and shape on painted or occasionally recycled fibre mediums. My work serves as a record of this exploration. I love to combine spontaneous painting with the more technical and time-honoured quilting and embroidery processes. I see cloth less as fabric and more as un-primed, un-stretched ground. The material is soft and pliable. It is easy to colour, paint, fold, rip, slice, seam and embroider at will. The processes I use allow me to build in texture and layered meaning into my work. I feel that there is more to discover with this approach as it is less constraining than with stretched canvas. For instance, I can build up a large
top and then crop it back if desired.” “Lately, I have been preoccupied with the stitched drawing (hand or machine). I am less interested in quilt embellishment and more with how the stitched line and its relationship to drawing can be incorporated into fibre art. I want to generate new imagery through this medium.”

He pursued his formal Education at George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology in Toronto Ontario, Canada. Chef Tim graduated in 1976 at the top of his class, obtaining his Red Seal and Master Chef certifications. Just recently relocating to Brockville, Chef Tim is looking forward to setting his roots and securing his future in our great region. Tarik Tuna & family immigrated from Turkey.
