Range, or the distance traveled before needing to recharge, remains a secondary concern for PEV adopters. This could be addressed in two key ways: increasing battery capacity and increasing charging network availability. More of either could provide a greater back-stop for drivers, reducing anxiety. Higher capacity batteries, which provide longer range, will likely reduce customer concerns for charging availability for unplanned and spontaneous trips. Increased charging networks with more locations can similarly provide drivers with reassurance that they will be able to charge whenever needed. Regarding cost as an issue, with the increase in PEV demand and continual technology advancements, the cost of PEVs has decreased and is expected to continue decreasing over the next few years. This has helped to address the vehicle price premium minimizing the impact of this issue.

Another major concern is dealing with the specific vehicle and infrastructure availability. Navigant investigated the key challenges preventing PEV ownership across the United States. As seen in Figure 9, which is categorized into cost, capability, and charging, the results indicated that vehicle charging infrastructure, range, and price were the highest concerns in each category among potential PEV consumers.
