Emotionally Preparing Your Children for Back-to-School Season

(Family Features) Between sheltering-in-place, online learning and time away from friends, many children will need a little extra support as they head back to school this fall. Consider these tips from the experts at KinderCare to help you emotionally prepare your children to return to school with confidence, optimism and excitement. Address your feelings (and theirs) Children often take cues about how to react from their parents. Think about what it takes for you to feel calm and prepared (or even excited) for the start of a new school year. That could mean talking with your child's teacher or school about the safety precautions they're taking so you can feel more at ease, taking a few minutes to establish a morning routine or stepping away from news that makes you anxious. Focus instead on the positive aspects of school, like the opportunity your child will have to learn, make friends, interact with others and grow into his or her own person. "Children need a sense of belonging, and school provides an important connection point for them," said Dr. Elanna Yalow, chief academic officer for KinderCare Learning Centers. "Nothing builds a sense of community like personal contact with friends and teachers. That connection is essential in supporting a child's growth and development." Set expectations about what to expect before the first day 6

Some children may feel ready to go and eager to explore, while others can be more reserved or even fearful of new places, faces and routines. When your child knows what to expect, it can go a long way in soothing any worries he or she may have about leaving home and going to school. It's also important to respect your child's growing independence and empower him or her to help others. As you explain safety precautions like covering the mouth when sneezing or coughing, or proper hand washing, emphasize how your child's actions can help keep family, friends and teachers safe. "Children may already be apprehensive about returning to school, let alone trying to cope with new safety practices," said Dr. Joelle Simpson, a pediatric emergency medicine physician and medical director for emergency preparedness at Children's National Hospital. "Explaining these precautions ahead of time can help your children see them as part of the school day routine instead of something to fear. For parents, remember that while children can get sick from this virus, it occurs less frequently than in adults and at lower rates than the flu." Celebrate the start of a new school year Try to plan a special activity or some extra family time the week before school starts and encourage your child to participate in the planning. "Remember, children didn't have time for a clean break and celebration at the end of the last school year, and this can help your child mentally adjust to a new routine and schedule," Yalow said. Let your child know how proud you are to see him or her growing up, learning how to be a good friend and exploring and learning about the world. Be sure to talk with your child each school day - what was learned, funny things friends said, the things that seem little but are important to your child. How teachers can prepare for successful distance learning this fall (BPT) - The COVID-19 pandemic has been the most disruptive event in the history of K-12 education, closing 120,000 schools and affecting 55 million students in the U.S. And educators have been challenged like never before. According to a survey commissioned by University of Phoenix, K-12 teachers often felt overwhelmed and under-supported. Teachers reported spending almost as much time prepping for virtual teaching (3.13 hours) as they spent actively teaching (3.97 hours), and less than half (47%) felt that available training was good or excellent. Having too much information could be as taxing as not having enough, making it difficult to determine which tools were best. Forty-one percent of teachers felt overwhelmed by the many resources provided to help them navigate virtual learning. During the next 90 days, schools and teachers will develop their resources for teaching this fall. "Most schools are beginning their preparation by learning from what they experienced when schools closed what were they prepared for, and more importantly, where they fell short," says Pam Roggeman, dean of the college of education at University of Phoenix. "There are a number of learning and communication tools available that provide methods and space for education to happen, but tools are only as good as the teachers who are managing them." Roggeman offers tips for educators preparing for the upcoming year. Conduct a needs assessment of yourself "Before diving into the sea of free resources, apps, etc., first decide what you already know and then what you need to know to better serve the needs of your students," advises Roggeman. Stay positive, she says, and be open to adapting to changing needs and circumstances. Be willing to readjust plans when something isn't working. Learn from peers Talk to colleagues, sharing notes about what worked this past term, and what didn't. Explore articles and resources from educators who faced similar challenges. "Tap into one of the best free resources - your peers," says Roggeman. "Take this time to learn what sound distance learning looks like."

8

Collaborate with administrators and school counselors to focus not only on teaching methods, but also supporting the mental wellness of students during this uncertain time. Use resources designed in response to current circumstances For example, the Virtual Teaching Academy, taking place June 26-July 1, is a free resource for K-12 educators, leaders and administrators who are seeking expert guidance and tangible insights on best practices for navigating the upcoming school year. The Academy is hosted by The Alliance for Virtual Learning, a new initiative spearheaded by University of Phoenix and Blackboard - a leading education technology company for teaching, learning and student engagement - that unites a network of educators, experts and administrators who are shaping the blueprint for new education models that combine the best of virtual and classroom teaching. Virtual Teaching Academy attendees will acquire necessary insights to create a blueprint to help their schools and districts prepare for the uncertain school year ahead. Create a plan to stay connected to parents regardless of technology access level During this challenging time, parents and teachers rely on each other to educate their kids - the parent-teacher relationship is crucial for success of a child's virtual education. Make a plan to stay connected with even the least technologically well-equipped homes. "Technology is a tool for the educational process, not the answer to good distance learning," says Roggeman. "Many districts are dealing with how to reach all students, which includes solving access issues such as no WiFi in the home or homes whose only 'screens' are cell phones." Creative thinking is key to helping families bridge the digital divide. Find low-tech ways to deliver curriculum and feedback, using telephone and mail communication, television and books. Help parents find internet access and ways to use a cell phone to access content. Focus on the needs of each student Every student has a different home situation and unique learning needs, which requires teachers to approach virtual learning with flexibility and empathy. Despite distance, many of the same best practices apply as inclassroom teaching: * Connect with students * Give meaningful academic feedback * Diagnose learners' individual needs * Address the needs of the "whole" child Creating a plan for the upcoming school year is crucial in these uncertain times. By utilizing resources like the Virtual Teaching Academy and focusing on individual student needs, teachers can help students be more successful in their education - even at a distance. ™

7 simple tips to stay organized for back-to-school 2020

(BPT) - Whether it's the first day of middle school or the first day away at college, students of all ages are preparing for a new school year. Students might be learning at home, in the classroom or a combination of both, so now is the time to get organized and prepared to help you tackle the year ahead. Here are some useful tips and tricks to help you succeed this school year. 1. Designate a study space. Whether it's used for homeschooling or homework after school, a dedicated study space helps you stay organized and focused on learning. Once you have your desk area decided, add your go-to essentials for easy studying, including pencils, erasers and a Pop-up Note Vertical Dispenser Need to jot down a quick reminder for an upcoming assignment? The easy one-handed note dispensing has you covered for all of your study sessions. 2. Add some fun personality Make a study space you’ll want to be in by adding personalized touches throughout. Pictures of friends and family are always a fun way to make a space feel like your own. Adding favorite colors or designs can help as well, such as colorful folders, bright accessories and fun notes to easily jot down reminders or even affirmations to keep yourself motivated. 10

3. Use colors strategically Use different colors strategically to stay organized. For example, use Post-it Super Sticky Notes Marrakesh Collection in a Kanban board to help keep track of all your school assignments. Assigning different colors for each column (for example, yellow for in-progress and green for complete) will help call attention to the tasks at hand. 4. Create mobile study bins When the kitchen table or shared desk are being used, mobile study bins can make moving around hassle-free. Personalize a plastic bin for each student in your home and fill them with gradeappropriate essentials. Give your kindergartner their favorite box of crayons and your high school senior some flags and tabs for easy note taking. That way when space is at a premium, they can grab a bin and head to a quiet corner, their bedroom or even outdoors to study. 5. Keep a journal or calendar With so much going on, to-do's can slip through the cracks. That's why keeping a journal or calendar is a good habit to adopt. A personal agenda can go from home to the classroom and beyond so you never miss a beat. Additionally, a weekly family calendar can help keep everyone connected, especially when schedules get hectic. The Post-it Weekly Planner is great for hanging in the kitchen or mud room for everyone to easily access. That way the whole family can stay in the know. 6. Use a "do not disturb" system Studying at home can be full of distractions. Consider adopting a system that indicates if you are busy or not. For example, use Super Sticky notes to create door tags in different colors. Green can mean, "come on in." Yellow can mean, "knock first." Red can mean, "do not disturb." 7. Utilize lists Lists are one of the best tools you can use to stay organized. Whether it's a list of facts to study for an upcoming test or a list of supplies needed for an important project, writing items out in a memorable way will ensure you don't forget a thing. Plus, when you write something down you help your brain remember it better, so make a list to support cognitive function. No matter what the new school year has in store for your family, with a positive attitude and an organized approach, you'll be sure to have a successful and productive school year packed with learning and fun. 4 ways to get ready for school no matter where you're learning

(BPT) - The new school year will look different for everyone this year, but whether students are gearing up for an in-person, online or hybrid learning experience, the right school supplies can help keep them motivated and productive all year long. Now more than ever, teachers and parents are heading online to prepare for the school year. In fact, according to the National Retail Federation, online school supply shopping is on the rise, with more than half (55%) more than half (55%) of K-12 shoppers planning to buy their supplies online this year. If you’re setting up an at-home learning space or preparing for a safe return to the classroom, online stores like Amazon make it easy to get everything you need. Here are some tips on how you can prepare for the new school year: Stock up on essentials Start the year off fresh and organized with a new planner, an ample supply of notebooks and fun, colorful folders. A mesh desk organizer will help your kids stay organized so they never misplace their pens and pencils (or their homework). Sparkle Mechanical Pencils will have them feeling stylish and eliminate pencil shavings--which is especially helpful if your kitchen is doubling as your classroom this year. For younger students, stock up on crayons, markers and colored pencils to give them a chance to unleash their creative side. Amazon’s Ready for School store offers low prices on these essentials and more, all shipped safely to your door. 12

Additionally, if the kids are at home all day, you may need to load up on more snacks this year. Try something that comes in single-portion servings for an easy snack that won’t leave a mess in the kitchen. Set up an at-home learning space An organized and productive learning space can help keep students motivated while learning from home. With Amazon’s Educator Shop </a>, teachers — and parents-turned-teachers — can easily find everything they need to set up their learning space. Upgrade your student’s setup with a desk, a comfortable chair and a printer like the all-in one HP printer, to start. Add a cool lamp to help brighten up their space or a fun desk accessory, like a plant to add some color and life. Finally, boost connectivity with routers such as this eero router to ensure you have top-notch Wi-Fi throughout the house, making any room a perfect classroom. Upgrade your tech A whopping 40% of parents are looking to invest in digital resources to supplement school education, according to the 2020 Deloitte back-to-school survey. Whether it's full-time, part-time or supplemental, digital learning is an important part of education. Start by checking out Amazon’s digital education center which includes educational content and workbooks for students. Or with the All-new Fire HD 8 Kids Edition Tablet students and parents can research and download educational apps to supplement school in a fun and engaging way. The device comes with a kid-proof case to protect from drops and bumps and has a built-in stand for hands-free use. Finally, remember to manage screen time by setting rules for usage and providing children with Kids Blue Light Blocking Glasses to protect developing eyes from harsh light. Set up healthy routines Getting out of "summer mode," especially this year, can make sticking to a routine difficult. With the start of the new school year fast approaching, start easing back into healthy routines now by setting earlier alarms or having family reading time in the evening. As the school year gets going, make quick, healthy lunches extra fun by packing things ahead of time in colorful, reusable lunch containers like these Bento boxes And don’t forget hydration keeping a durable water bottle with your kids whether they’re at home or school is important. The Contigo Water Bottle is perfect for keeping kids hydrated and provides water in a personal, sanitary container that won't leak. But if your kids are spending their days learning from the kitchen table, don’t forget to take breaks throughout the day. Just taking a few breaks during the day to stretch or go for a walk can keep your family moving and active! Find all of your school-year essentials and more at amazon.com/readyforschool.

3 ways teachers, families and students can prepare for the school year

(BPT) - The beginning of a new school year always means change, but this back-to-school season will look a bit different. Whether students are taught virtually or in a classroom environment, it will create challenges for teachers, families and kids alike Kleenex brand child wellness expert and board-certified attending family physician, Deborah Gilboa, M.D., weighs in with her top tips for families to help prepare for the upcoming school year. Identify the right resources One thing in high demand for teachers this year is support from communities. It’s important to ensure teachers have the resources they need to lead student learning for both online and in-person settings. Everything from basic supplies to materials that promote learning and overall well-being can help kids manage stress, but teachers often need help acquiring those supplies. That's why Kleenex brand is donating up to $1.2 million in 2020 to fund requests from teachers on the education nonprofit crowdfunding site DonorsChoose. “When students have the resources they need to learn and stay well, achievement can thrive.” said Charles Best, founder of DonorsChoose. “This upcoming school year holds many unknowns for educators, and we’re grateful for this support from Kleenex brand, which has helped equip over 2,500 teachers and 176,500 students with materials they need to continue learning. 14

Prepare for a new routine A big part of going back to school is getting into a new routine as a family and being flexible knowing things will continue to change. Gilboa recommends introducing a similar school schedule weeks before school starts, so parents are able to help children adjust and make changes as needed. “Having kids practice what is expected of them with these new guidelines will help them feel more prepared when it’s time for school to start.” says Gilboa. “Whether it’s packing their backpack or starting the morning with structured activities such as reading or coloring, having this routine will help kids transition better into the school year.” Don’t underestimate a child’s stress Research shows that most elementary school children report some symptoms of nerves or anxiety around returning to school each year. In these unprecedented times, those numbers are expected to rise dramatically. According to Gilboa, the biggest signs of stress to look out for in kids include behavior, sleep and appetite changes, difficulty with normal communication, or not enjoying things they normally do. “Kids will pick up on their parents’ stress leading up to the school year, so it’s important to remember to manage your stress and reactions appropriately,” said Gilboa. “To help understand your kids’ true feelings, ask questions to encourage them to share good and bad experiences. This way, when your child is going through something stressful, they have the practice and expectation that they can talk about it with their parents.” Parents can start by encouraging kids to share a couple of good things that happened in the day, and also a challenge. Questions could include “what moment made you smile today” or “tell me about a moment you wish you could erase. The upcoming school year will feel overwhelming but taking extra time to understand and communicate with kids and their teachers will help everyone feel more in control and prepared for the school year. How are we equipping students to succeed in science? (BPT) – Scientists across the world are charging forward in the fight to prevent and treat COVID-19. And they’re harnessing the latest tech and science as they press down on the accelerator at a speed unattainable to date. But another fight is also playing out during this unprecedented challenge: the urgent need to educate young people while schools remain closed.

As science dominates headlines and dinner conversations, it’s integral that all young people better understand and appreciate science and the role it plays in society. Science literacy can no longer be a luxury or an add-on in an age when it should be embedded into how every sector responds to complex challenges. The shift to remote learning For many young people, their first introduction to science at school is through teachers, who clearly deserve appreciation and the deepest thanks right now. Yet as teachers everywhere — 63 million primary and secondary teachers around the world, according to UN News have had to rapidly transition to online learning to reach the 1.2 billion children currently out of school around the world, many don’t have the resources and support they need to teach successfully. Among schools in the United States, teachers in the most economically disadvantaged districts are least likely to be able to provide online learning opportunities for all students, according to Education Week Today’s school closures magnify the inequities that were always present in society and schooling before COVID-19. So how can science teachers, far from their classrooms, best encourage a scientific mindset that is needed now more than ever to understand the world? One solution is LabXchange an online community for learning, sharing and collaboration. This free platform, launched by Harvard University and the Amgen Foundation, makes science accessible to hundreds of thousands of high school and college students. Online science platforms support teachers LabXchange’s virtual simulations remove barriers of expensive equipment, safety issues, and the extra time teachers need to prepare materials for school labs, which is beneficial now more than ever when teachers are shifting how they deliver science education. Free, comprehensive online platforms like LabXchange, Khan Academy and others can meaningfully advance students’ learning and interest in science, even when they aren’t at school. 16

When young people learn science, they need to be able to make mistakes, to be creative, to try something again and again by experimenting without worrying about breaking something, says Dr. Scott Heimlich, vice president of the Amgen Foundation. “Failure is an inherent part of the scientific process, but too often the way science is taught in school leaves no time for mistakes or creativity or play,” Heimlich says. “Even with its limits, technology can indeed support teachers to meet their lesson goals by embedding our latest understanding of how students learn into the design process.” Meeting teachers and students needs Well-designed programs should put teachers in the driver’s seat. In-person lab programs like the 30-year-old Amgen Biotech Experience have laid a strong groundwork for how best to reach students, especially those in underserved communities, by engaging them in science. While technology is best used to complement or supplement in-person instruction, the Amgen Biotech Experience labs are now available virtually through LabXchange, showing how an online experience can be used to teach lab skills remotely. With a platform like this, science teachers can remix high-quality, curated resources into customized learning pathways for different groups of students with different needs. Teachers can also embed their own content along with assessments to gauge their students learning and understanding. A scientific mindset For science to be accessible to all, especially now, the world needs more forward-looking educational technology that gives teachers and students the tools they need to foster a scientific mindset. All around us today, scientists are leveraging the most powerful tools and platforms in the fight against this virus. Science teachers--and their students--deserve the same.

With the right online platforms, teachers can continue students science learning outside of school. 17

Prepping for a Successful School Year

(StatePoint) Whether heading back to the classroom or back to a digital device this fall, it is important to be prepared. Get your children set up for academic success with the following resources and gear:

• Comfortable workstation: A few considerations will improve ergonomics and comfort, for better focus when working at home. Consider a height-adjustable table or desk as well as an adjustable chair in order to accommodate your growing child’s needs. If possible, select an area for your child to work that gets plenty of natural light. A good desk lamp is also essential. • Math tools: Did you know that there are free math resources available online that can help to alleviate the challenges posed by remote-learning? Check out Casio’s learning site, available at CasioEducation.com/remote-learning, which provides math activities, YouTube videos, an online calculator and downloadable resources. School Season Tips for Productive Days and Restful Nights

(StatePoint) Whether your child is learning in a classroom or digitally, establishing a steady family dynamic is essential to a successful school year. One area where this is particularly important is ensuing that kids and parents alike get plenty of sleep. Good sleep equates to better health and performance, stronger immune systems, and plays a key role in the ability to learn, solve problems, and maintain a healthy mental outlook. Setting a regular bedtime and wake time, limiting screen time before bed, and turning to solutions such as Natrol Melatonin Gummies or Fast Dissolve can help get more restful sleep. To learn more, visit natrol.com. Kids crave routine: it lets them know they are in a secure and loving environment and helps them perform better at school. Maintaining the same meal time, down time and bedtime routines that you would during a typical school year can help establish a sense of normalcy during this period of uncertainty.

Support Students Through Community Programs

(Family Features) As kids prepare for the upcoming school year, school supplies remain critical to their success. While school districts struggle with the challenge of delivering education and resources to students amid a pandemic, many parents are working to determine how they will ensure their children have the necessary supplies. Community youth programs are innovating to fill gaps and ensure kids from low-income families in particular are equipped with learning materials and supplies, enrichment activities and food. For example, when schools closed, local corps of The Salvation Army started adapting creative alternatives to their youth programs to provide activities, snacks and educational materials like coloring sheets, scavenger hunts and more to keep kids entertained and learning. If you'd like to make a similar impact in your community, consider lending a hand in one of these ways: Tutor or mentor students. Although most kids across the nation face the same challenges with academics, some are at more of a disadvantage because their access to remote learning resources is limited or parents are unable to assist at home. You can help by volunteering to tutor students as they practice learned skills and get back into the swing of a new school year. Donate supplies. There are 30 million children in the United States whose parents will have to choose between buying school supplies or other necessities like putting food on the table. Consider adding extra common items like crayons, markers and glue when you shop for your own children and dropping them off at your local youth center. Campaigns like The Salvation Army's "Stuff the Bus" events allow shoppers to purchase and drop off requested items at collection bins located at the front of participating retailers. 21

Get involved with extracurricular activities. If you have a particular skillset or experience, for example as a high school or college athlete, lending your knowledge to a local youth group can help provide a constructive outlet for kids while enriching your own life. Volunteer for meal distribution. Many children rely heavily on schools for meals; in fact, the food some students receive through their schools' breakfast and lunch programs may be the only meals they get in a day. Across the country, organizations have partnered with local school districts to provide meal kits, coordinate food distribution routes and pickup locations to get meals to kids and families. Depending on the needs in your area, you may be able to donate food, assist with organizing the meal kits or help coordinate deliveries. Help fund youth programs. Uncertainty caused by COVID-19 has many people reconsidering their finances, and that means the donations and contributions many programs rely upon have slowed. If your situation allows, consider a monetary contribution to a youth-oriented cause, which can help deliver programming even if you're not able to volunteer in other ways. Learn more about getting involved in your community at salvationarmyusa.org.

Purposeful Youth Programs While many children from low-income families rarely experience life outside of their immediate neighborhoods, youth programs can help kids discover new skills, passions and hobbies while connecting with others in a safe, healthy way. Along with community centers dedicated to supporting the physical, emotional and spiritual growth of moms, dads and kids, organizations like The Salvation Army provide after-school programs for students of all ages and numerous music, art and athletic programs at its 7,600 centers across the country. The organization's "Stuff the Bus" program also helps make activities and programs more accessible to low-income youth in local communities, including: After-school programs offer homework assistance and counseling for children of all ages, as well as one-on-one assistance with homework, study skills and literacy advancement. Dance, art and music programs are offered in no- or low-cost environments. Classes range from choir, band and dancing to drawing, writing and acting. Sports, clubs and extracurricular activities give children from low-income neighborhoods a chance to play team sports and learn valuable athletic and life skills. Parental involvement coaching equips parents with the skills needed to support and sustain their children's educational needs. Source: The Salvation Army 22

Creating a Stable Back-to-School Routine for Children

(Family Features) If there's one thing parents know, it's children thrive on routines. When it seems like everything is changing, routines can create stability. "When children know what to expect, they don't feel powerless and out of control," said Rashelle Chase from KinderCare Learning Centers' education team. "Children like to plan just as much as adults do. When they know what will happen next, they can set their expectations."

Routines can also help children regulate their emotions - and avoid meltdowns or outbursts - because their days follow a pattern and are predictable. There's typically a sense of comfort in knowing what comes next. Whether your child's back-to-school routine includes actually going to school or distance learning, consider these tips to help create a sense of stability.

23

Set a schedule Talk with your child about his or her school day and how it will be different. Work together to come up with ways you can both ease into the new routine, whether your child is attending school part time, learning at home or going to a childcare center or program. Remember, little things can help create a sense of routine and stability. Even if your child is learning at home and could stay in pajamas all day, something as small as getting dressed in school clothes and brushing teeth before sitting down for lessons can signal it's time to study. Be flexible The things that make school fun - whatever that may be for your child - aren't at home. However, there are some things you can do at home, like eat a snack while studying or play with toys, that you cannot do at school that make learning more enjoyable. Be sure to build breaks into your child's day. Knowing there will be something fun after the next lesson can give your child something to look forward to and help him or her settle down to complete the task at hand. Plus, those breaks can be an opportunity for parents to get some work done, too. Talk with your child and with his or her teachers: Perhaps those 30 minutes of reading don't have to be done midmorning when your child is restless. Instead, maybe your family could do 30 minutes of reading before bed when your child is calmer. Talk it out Nearly everyone is experiencing strong emotions right now whether it's in reaction to an abnormal start to the school year or other factors that impact daily life. The difference is adults can contextualize a situation and adjust their reactions. Children haven't yet mastered those skills, so they react based on whatever nugget of information they have. Home is a safe place for most children, which means they know they can express their feelings freely. That may mean slamming laptops or books down in frustration, yelling or using hurtful words. Your child might be upset because he or she doesn't understand the schoolwork or might be afraid for safety or the safety of loved ones during these uncertain times. Talk with your child about his or her feelings and work together to find healthy ways to express those emotions, like taking three deep breaths or using a physical activity to vent, instead of keeping those feelings pent-up inside. Difference and change don't have to mean chaos and uncertainty. With a bit of thought and a stable routine, parents can help their children have an enjoyable, productive school year. Tips to create the ultimate backyard movie night

(BPT) - Backyard movie nights are trending in summer 2020. Whether you want a romantic evening with your partner, a fun family activity for all ages or a memorable event with friends, backyard movie nights are a great option that can be planned again and again. To create the ultimate movie night, you need a few essentials. Consider these six steps to get ready for a season of cinema fun. Step 1: The screen To help everyone enjoy a great view, you'll want a screen as the centerpiece of the event. The cheapest option is to iron and hang a white bed sheet. However, to get a better quality viewing experience, consider buying white blackout fabric from your local craft store. Of course if you are serious about your outdoor movie nights, you may want to invest in an outdoor projection screen that rolls up and can be stored after each event. Step 2: A projector Not all portable projectors are created equal, and it's worthwhile to invest in a good one for the best experience year after year. For example, the LG PH30N features a portable, lightweight design at 5by-5-by-1.5-inches and weighs just 1.1 pounds. A small size with big impact, you get an impressive home theater experience with a rich picture in 1280 by 720 HD resolution up to 100 inches (measured diagonally), and brightness of 250 ANSI lumens. The powerful LED light source displays bright images with a lamp lasting up to 30,000 hours (up to 10 years based on a usage of 8 hours a day). Learn more at www.lg.com.

25

Step 3: Seating Think high to low when setting up seating to allow everyone a good view of the screen. Blankets with pillows are perfect for up front and are popular with kids. In the back, folding chairs or lawn furniture is ideal for adults or others who like to sit up without blocking another's view. Stagger seating as necessary and add small tables as needed for food and drinks. You may want to add bins of blankets and pillows for extra comfort so people can grab them if desired. Step 4: Snacks and refreshments No movie experience is complete without favorite treats. For small groups, buy boxes of movie-style candy at your local store to give the experience an authentic feel. Popcorn in individual bowls and your favorite drinks will make for perfect snacking. For larger groups, set up a snack buffet with jars of candy such as licorice and gummies, plus coolers full of drinks. You might even create a popcorn bar where people can scoop their desired amount into bowls and top with a variety of savory, sweet and salty toppings. Step 5: Lighting The best time for an outdoor movie is after sunset. However, you might want to add some light for safety and convenience. String lights are an affordable way to light pathways back to the house or around landscaping. Additionally, small flashlights for guests are a great option. You can get some at your local dollar store and they make a great party favor to take home after the event. You may even plan a pre-movie activity where kids can decorate their flashlight with stickers, gems and markers. Step 6: Alert neighbors You want your movie night to be a positive experience for everyone. With these steps you have the makings of a fun evening for guests, but as a courtesy, you should alert your neighbors of your plans. That way they know there may be more activity outdoors than usual. You should also keep sound at a reasonable level and select PG films to ensure appropriate language and content for everyone.

DeVito Parker Jr. is a 14 year old actor, model, and rapper/songwriter. DeVito started acting about 3 years ago. His first job was a music video for a local artist. That is when DeVito realized he loved being in front of the camera. Most of the jobs DeVito has booked are outside of Cleveland, so we have traveled a lot! We have traveled to many different cities and states for job opportunities and auditions. This is when we decided to home school DeVito and enrolled him into Ohio Virtual Academy (OHVA). OHVA allowed him to travel and chase his dreams without missing school. DeVito auditioned for the Cleveland School of the Arts and was accepted to attend high school there. Unfortunately, due to coronavirus it looks like he will continue to attend school remotely for a while at CSA. DeVito, started off working featured background roles and short films and then eventually started to book speaking roles in major films and TV shows. His very first speaking role was in the short film called Vanish. His first major speaking role was in the film White Boy Rick that was filmed here in Cleveland. He was very excited to book this role but when the film came to theaters the scene he was in did not make the final cut. He was bummed but it was a great experience. It also taught him how these types of things happen all the time in the industry. The scene was cut but he still gets credit because he booked the role so it was very excited to see his name in the ending credits still. His next major speaking role was in the TV series The Chi on Showtime. This filmed in Chicago and was a lot of fun for DeVito. 90% of his work is in Chicago so he has a few acting buddies on set there. He was on Season 2 Episode 4. When the episode aired his friends and family were watching and very happy for him. I sent a short clip via We Transfer. After booking these speaking roles on Sag projects DeVito is now eligible for his Sag card. He is proud of this accomplishment. DeVito has also used his acting/model skills in National TV commercial for Dicks Sporting Goods and a National print ad for Adidas inside of Dicks Sporting Goods store. It was really cool to see DeVito's face all over the United States inside of the store and on the commercial. People in many different states sent him pictures when they saw him inside the stores. DeVito has worked many other projects that he did not have speaking roles but he is featured in. For example, Mindhunters, he was in Season 2 episode 7 in the march scene for the Atlanta child murders. This was filmed in Pennsylvania. He also was on season 4 of Chicago PD. He also didn't have a speaking on the movie Best of Enemies but he saw Taraji P Henson on set so that was exciting. He has many other projects listed on his resume. There are couple projects that have not come out yet. He co-stars in an independent film called Worst Christmas Ever filmed in Youngstown, OH. He also worked on a new series called LoveCraft Country that will be on HBO and premiere August 16, 2020. So he is excited to see the final results of these projects.

Unfortunately, DeVito's mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer so we were unable to travel this past year. His acting career slowed down due to her illness. She had several surgeries and hospitalizations so they were unable to travel as much. DeVito focused on his music during this difficult time. Her health has improved now so he will be back acting soon hopefully. DeVito(Vito is rap name)has released approximately 17 songs worldwide on all digital platforms such as iTunes, Spotify, and more. He writes all of his own music. During this difficult time he expresses himself through his music. He has an in house music studio where he works on his music and is learning to produce his own songs. He uses his acting skills in his music videos. His last music video shows him beating up "Cancer" for me. He is very creative. His music is clean music and age appropriate. His new song Laura & Urkel dropped today and the link to the music video is below. The video is inspired by an episode of Family Matters. Overall DeVito is a very talented young man. He is very ambitious and loves to entertain. He also keeps his grades up. His mother and father are very proud of him! Laura & Urkel music video

What your clothes say about you Nobody wants to be judgmental. Nevertheless, it's impossible not to make a few assumptions when it comes to what people are wearing. From trendies to hippies, mods to rockers, timeless gentlemen to classic ladies, it's safe to say we all have a style, and as such our clothes speak volumes about the types of people we are, and the sort of folk we would like to be seen as. Fascinated by the relationship between personality and attire, we've listed a few stereotypes below, along with what they would be wearing, so take a look and see if you can spot yourself amongst the crowd. The casual Once directly associated with football hooligans, it's safe to say Casual has come a long way since the late 1980s and early 90s. Brand such as Fred Perry, Burberry and Lacoste have made huge steps towards reinventing themselves for the new millennium, although the look and feel of their lines haven't changed much since the houses first began producing fashion items for men. The free spirit Hoodies made from hemp, thick-knitted multi-coloured jumpers, flowing trousers and more are all signs that you want to be seen as someone who thinks outside the box - although there's as much likelihood that you've spent the last 12 months treading the same worn path around Thailand and India as countless other travellers. Criticisms aside, hippy chic can be just as chic as anything else these days, meaning that this look is no longer indicative of self-righteous people with a chip on their shoulder about how straight everyone else is. The classicist Thanks to the prominence of shows like Mad Men and Masters of Sex , classic 20th century togs are truly back in fashion. For girls, that's long dresses, pencil skirts and cute blouses; for men, who arguably get the most from this particular trend, it's a case of well-fitted (and ideally individually tailored) suits, tie clips and shiny cufflinks, combined with a trilby or bowler hat if you're looking to recreate the London look of the same period. The mods Perhaps the most British of all styles, Mods are all about clean lines, close-fitted wear and an attitude that's as sharp as a pin. Ladies will be appearing in dresses, knee-high boots and pristine leather; for guys we're talking polos buttoned up to the neckline, checked jackets and slim-fit trousers - with both approaching hair with a no-nonsense attitude, creating angular, short, cropped aesthetics.

Goodbye Gloss

From June Sarpong to Victoria Beckham since the late 1990s celebrities have rarely gone as far as the corner shop for a pint of milk and a newspaper without slapping on their lipgloss. And where celebs go the beauty pages and the public follow. So, for a good ten years we've been stocking up on Juicy Tubes, slapping on Stila Lip Glaze and coveting DuWop's magical Lip Venom. But all of a sudden, and not just because winter is calling, the lip has gone seriously matte again⦠Rule One: Think Modern - If we've learnt one thing from gloss it's that lips should shine. Fashion may be harking back to the 1980’s but our make-up shouldn't have to thanks to ever more creative formulations. The new generation of lipsticks have a subtle shine or shimmer to them, even the most matte lip colours have a moisture to them which old school 'sticks were devoid of. Check out MAC for lipsticks which are easily separated in to eight different 'finishes' from lustre to glaze. Rule Two: Bold is Best After years of glossing it may come as a shock to swipe on a slick of lippy straight from the bullet, but deep pigmentation is where it's at. This winter bold, deep reds and plums take over from a summer of oranges and pinks so jump right in the deep end. A killer red lip may seem hard to wear but can be so flattering. Pillar box red is universally flattering - try Shu Uemura's Rouge Unlimited in RD190. Rule Three: Be Prepared What the Scouts said applies to make up artists too. Where the sheen of lip gloss was forgiving when wearing lipsticks nothing is more essential than a good foundation. Two simple ways to ensure an excellent lip are to gently brush with a dry toothbrush to remove dry flakiness and encourage blood flow and to use a great lip salve as often as needed. Rule Four: Neat or Not? Take a close look at any recent beauty shots from and you'll see two distinct trends - the 'done' lip and, of course, the 'undone' lip. The done lip is more carefully applied using a base of lip liner and layer upon layer of brushed on colour whereas the undone lip is more romantic, patted on to the centre of the lips for a fairy tale rosebud pout or gently smeared beyond the lipline using a finger. Which you choose should depend on the rest of your face and your outfit but, mostly, which you feel most comfortable in. Rule Five: Lips Alone It's an old rule but a good one. When wearing a statement lip, a face needs little else. A swipe of mascara, a pat of powder and a dusting of blusher and you're ready to go. [FF] 31

Give yourself a professional manicure If the credit crunch has got you tightening your purse strings, you might think a manicure is a luxury you just can't afford. However, you don't have to spend a lot of money to get your nails looking good, in fact you don't even need to step into a salon. You can get your nails looking salon-great in the comfort of your own home, with little effort, expense or time. Simply follow the four steps below to achieve salon-perfect talons. All you'll need is: nail polish remover, cotton wool pads, cuticle remover, cuticle stick (often called a hoof stick), an emery board and some clear or coloured nail polish. 1. Clean your hands The first thing you need to do before you start a manicure is make sure your hands and nails are nice and clean. Using the pointed end of a cuticle stick, dig out any dirt from underneath your nails, taking care not to jab your nail bed. 2. Remove cuticle Once your hands and nails are clean and dry, apply some cuticle remover to the cuticles which is the skin that covers the top of the nail. Let the remover sink in for a few minutes and then gently push back the moistened cuticle with the cuticle stick. This should not be painful, if it is then chances are you are pushing too hard with the stick. 3. File your nails Once your cuticles have been carefully pushed back you can start to file the nail ends. Make sure to move in one direction from the end of the nail to the centre and the same on the other side. Moving your emery board back and forth along the edge of your nails will weaken them and may cause them to split. Aim to create a natural looking oval shape, that is neither too square nor too pointed but in line with the natural shape of your fingers. When you are pleased with the shape, gently brush the nail file in a downwards movement across the end of your nail to get rid of any excess nail ends. 4. Apply nail polish Once you are happy with the shape of your nails, apply a coat of clear or coloured nail polish to each nail. Pick up a small amount of polish on your brush and paint one stroke down the centre of your nail. Your brush should hold just enough colour to accomplish this. Next, gently apply a stroke of polish to the sides of the nail. The nail should be completely coloured in three strokes. Allow to set for a minute or so before applying the second coat.

If you wear polish regularly it is advisable to take it off and leave nails bare for at least two days a week to ensure healthy growth. Give the salons a run for their money with a home manicure 32

Make up you can wake up in For most women in the UK, applying make-up in the morning is like getting dressed or having breakfast - it's just part of the normal routine. But what if you didn't have to spend a fortune on regularly buying beauty products or spend hours prettifying yourself? What if you woke up every day with your make-up looking as fresh as a character from a TV show? It may be possible, if you opt for semi-permanent make-up. One woman who investigated this area a few years ago and has since become an expert on it is Debra Robson-Lawrence. Based in her discreet Harley Street clinic, Robson-Lawrence pioneered semi-permanent make-up over 20 years ago and these days is acknowledged as a leader in her field. She is sought out by everyone from actresses desiring high-definition perfection right through to women who've lost their eyebrows through chemotherapy or alopecia and who want to look their confident best again. Cosmetic surgeon Dr Rajiv Grover has described Robson-Lawrence as having "a magic touch". So, what is semi-permanent make-up? It's easy for Hollywood horror stories to spring to mind when you think of this form of make-up. But we've come a long way since the days of bold and scarylooking tattooed-on eyebrows. These days the whole point is that it's subtle enough to make you simply look fresher and prettier, which is the main reason that it's good to visit a practitioner who really knows what they're doing. Semi-permanent make-up can be an option for a number of looks including enhancing brows, contouring and defining lips or adding a flattering infusion of rosiness to lips that are grey or have a lifeless appearance. It can even be used to successfully recreate the appearance of eyelashes - a godsend for anyone who has lost their own eyelashes through alopecia or cancer, or for burns patients. Robson-Lawrence has trademarked a micro-pigmentation technique called Fame (Facial Aesthetic Micro Enhancement), which is ultra-delicate. The clinic also has a technique that can be used for optical nipple and areola reconstruction in women who've had implants after partial or total mastectomies. Ten per cent of the cost of each reconstructive procedure is donated to Breast Cancer Care. So if you fancy turning back the clock a few years or simply correcting a few flaws, then semi-permanent make-up may well be worth considering. For more information visit: www.permanent-makeup.com. Tips for Healthy and Sustainable Outdoor Dining

(StatePoint) The fall season is the ideal time of year to dine outdoors. To create a healthy and sustainable outdoor dining experience, consider these tips: • Reduce and reuse/ditch the plastic: Ditch the single use cups, plates and utensils and instead, serve meals using reusable dinnerware made from sustainable, shatterproof materials designed for outdoor use. Use rimmed plates to help reduce spills and wine charms or a set of glasses with unique colors to make it easy for each person to identify their glasses. • Cook completely outdoors: Set up your cooking and prep stations outside for an authentic start to finish al fresco experience. Consider going beyond the grill and turning a portion of your backyard into a full outdoor kitchen, complete with coolers and storage and working space. This will not only make you a more versatile outdoor chef, but also, it eliminates the need to rush between the kitchen and your outdoor set-up, enabling you to enjoy more fresh air, more time with your family and a streamlined food prep experience. • Stay hydrated but ditch the bottled water: Bottled water contains microplastics and contributes to waste. Consider a more sustainable option with a reusable water filter pitcher that doesn’t ruin your outdoor look. One great option is the LifeStraw Home Water Filter Pitcher, which protects against over 30 contaminants, including bacteria, parasites, microplastics, lead, mercury and chemicals, including PFAS and chlorine. The sleek and sustainable design is available in 7-cup and 10-cup sizes made from either glass or BPA-free materials. Available at LifeStraw.com, Walmart.com and Target.com • Highlight fresh flavors: Fall can actually be prime planting season. Cultivate an organic garden for access to herbs such as mint, basil and dill, which you can toss into meals for a fresh and nutritious burst of flavor, as well as use to create herb bouquets for an aromatic tablescape. • Beat bugs: Evening meals are often enjoyed at dusk, which is, unfortunately, the most active time of day for biting bugs. Fend pests off naturally and keep diners comfortable safely with a citronella candle or other natural solutions like lemon eucalyptus, peppermint oil and lemongrass oil.

This fall, make your outdoor space the heart of the home by transforming it into an area where you can enjoy healthy, sustainable meals with your family. 37

5 Home Remodeling Tips from the Pros

(Family Features) With the extra time many Americans have spent at home over the past few months, there have been plenty of opportunities to think about how that living space could be improved. While this may not be the ideal time to tackle a full gut and renovate project, it may still be possible to do some smaller scale remodeling projects that update and improve your home. For example, simple cosmetic repairs like painting and replacing vanities can make a noticeable difference with minimal work or investment. Or if you're hesitant about bringing contractors into the house, outdoor projects like replacing fencing, adding paver stones or constructing outdoor living spaces may be a benefit for your family. Before you take on a project, consider these tips from Robi Kirsic, MCKBR, UDCP, chairman of the board of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and co-CEO of TimeLine Renovation & Design.

Define the Purpose The first consideration whether you're making changes for yourself or for future resale is the purpose of your project. This determines everything from the budget to the materials you select. Remember projects in the kitchen and bathroom typically bring the greatest return on investment. It's also a good idea to plan how you'll use the renovated area. When possible, incorporate elements of universal design that don't change how the space looks but will change how it works. For example, in the bathroom, install a curbless shower, taller toilet and block in walls to allow future installation of grab bars. 38

Stick to a Budget Another early decision is your budget. It's fruitless to spend time looking at materials and making design decisions based on products that exceed your budget or, conversely, fall below the quality level you prefer. Having a professional involved can help keep you from overspending and identify areas you may want to splurge or pull back.

Select a Remodeler Friends and family can be great resources when it comes to choosing a remodeling contractor since they're likely to give detailed and candid opinions about their experiences. When you begin interviewing companies yourself, verify they're licensed and insured, and ask what they offer above those minimum requirements. Are they certified or accredited? Do they specialize in the type of work you're considering? Also be sure to request and check references and search online for reviews.

Conduct Virtual Meetings While some projects may require an in-person assessment, many planning sessions can be conducted virtually. You can even shop products to be used in your project virtually since online catalogs typically show a variety of colors and finishes along with prices. For items you need to see or feel to choose, like flooring, request samples to test in your home. To make your virtual meetings most productive, prepare by providing a detailed scope of work and be ready to provide measurements and show the space cleared of clutter.

Keep it Safe For some families, sticking to outdoor projects may be more comfortable in the short term. For those who are ready to bring contractors inside, there are numerous steps you can take to create a safer working environment. Examples include asking everyone involved to wear face masks and gloves and using plastic at doorways to keep the work area separate from the living area. Regular disinfecting and a thorough cleaning at the end of the project are also important preventive steps. Fun in the sun: 5 things you should know to ride a watercraft

(BPT) - In this new era of staycations and social distancing, there has been a heightened interest in outdoor recreational activities, especially with watersports and watercraft. According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, watercraft sales are up as much as 75% compared to last year, making it one of the fastest growing activities out there. With the rise in popularity of watercraft and more boats out on the water, Sea-Doo maker BRP is offering tips to those who are ready to venture out in the open water.

"The Sea-Doo life is about adventure, fun and unforgettable experiences, and that's as important now as it has ever been," said Annick Lauzon, Director, Global Marketing, Sea-Doo. "More and more people are discovering motorized water sports, and they're getting to know what experienced riders have known all along: very few things in life eliminate stress like spending time on the open water. In fact, it's hard to find anyone on a Sea-Doo who has a frown!"

Here are five things Sea-Doo recommends before starting your adventure:

1. Check if you need a license.

With the increase in watercraft popularity, more riders will be out on the water, and it's important you have all the information when traveling lake-to-lake, finding your favorite river spot, or riding in the open ocean. Each state (province) has its own rules and regulations regarding licensing and proper

40

age to operate a watercraft. Check out the Boat U.S. Foundation or Boat-Ed.com to know the regulations in your region.

2. Have a good understanding of your watercraft before you hit the waves.

Get to know the general functions of your watercraft. It might be obvious, but spend some time on land learning the controls and functions so you can hit the water with confidence. Sea-Doo recommends you check out your operator's guide, know your fuel level, and understand the general best operational practices so you're good to go before heading away from shore.

3. Be chill and remember to share the water with others.

Respect everyone on the water and surroundings, and adopt a fun and safe riding style. Be mindful of signs and reminders to slow down or stay out of restricted areas. Also, keep a safe distance away from others and the shoreline. Watercraft were meant for social distancing even before it was a thing! Finally, never ride under the influence of drugs or alcohol as it puts everyone's safety at risk.

4. Wear the right gear.

A life jacket (aka Personal Flotation Device or PFD) is a no-brainer even if you know how to swim. For additional safety, Sea-Doo reminds riders to wear the tether cord connected to the ignition switch on your life jacket at all times. In the event you end up in the water, that tether cuts the engine power and you can get right back on. Also, you and your passenger should always wear a wetsuit bottom in neoprene for protection. And finally, take sunglasses to increase the cool factor and for protection from the sun and the elements!

5. Pay attention to the environment.

Leave your playground and surroundings cleaner than you found it. Protecting nature and the outdoors is what will keep watersports and recreational activities going for decades to come. Don't throw trash in the water or surrounding areas. And respect the animals in the area - after all, it's their home.

By following these tips, watercraft riders will not only be able to take advantage of water fun but get in some healthy escape therapy, recharge their metaphorical batteries and practice social distancing to create great memories from this unforgettable summer. 41

5 tips for making your bathroom a relaxation station

(BPT) - As Americans are spending more time at home in response to the pandemic, many are looking for ways to turn their living spaces into retreats of calm, comfort and well-being. For some people, that's meant major renovations. For others, it's meant making select improvements designed to add more tranquility and/or enjoyment to their lives in what has become a somewhat uncertain world. It's not so surprising then that home-improvement contractors listing their services on Houzz saw a 58% boost in homeowner requests in June 2020, relative to June 2019. "In terms of design, I think people are seeing their living spaces as their refuges - sanctuaries where they're safe and comforted," notes architect Ryan Leidner on Dwell.com. "As the outside world becomes less touchable, I can see a great desire for the materials, textures and objects within our homes to have more of a tactile quality that invites us to use them. And I can see people getting more creative and interested in ways to bring the outside in, possibly re-imagining their living spaces as indoor gardens and landscapes." A prime area of focus for many homeowners has been their bathrooms, which are now being converted into spa-like havens of self-care, instead of just functional spaces. At the same time, many are adding features that aim for better cleanliness, sustainability and multi-generational living.

If "your own private spa" sounds like the perfect place for your family to re-energize and rejuvenate from the cares of each day, here are ideas for creating such a space in your home. Add an extra-deep soaking tub. Gone are the days when a bath meant scrunching your limbs into a cramped basin of water and trying to stay warm. Today's roomy bathtubs are designed to let you stretch out and relax, fully immersed, in a soothing surround of hydrotherapeutic luxury. Install a curbless shower and linear drain. The most progressive shower configurations are ergonomically constructed with sleek, curb-free, ADA-compliant entries, so family members need not step in and out, but merely walk in. In conjunction, forward-thinking company QuickDrain USA offers ShowerLine PVC Linear Drains that swiftly eliminate surface water using one-directional sloping and smart engineering techniques developed in Europe. Unlike more traditional drains, a linear drain also allows for freedom of design; because it appears as an unobtrusive strip aligned with your shower wall, you can choose any kind of material for the rest of your shower floor - even larger-sized tiles. That means fewer seams that can collect mold, mildew and grime, and less cleaning for you. Invest in voice-activated smart features. With a few technology and equipment upgrades, Alexa, Siri or Google Home can now run your bath at your temperature of choice, power up your shower, light up your mirror, warm your toilet seat, diffuse your favorite fragrance, play all your top tunes and perform a number of other functions aimed at customizing your home spa experience and boosting its luxury level. Incorporate a steam shower. Equipment added right into your shower stall can pipe in fresh steam customized by temperature and duration. "Bathing" in the vapor can feel wonderfully soothing and hydrating, and it's said to produce health benefits ranging from better circulation and sinus drainage to clearer skin and rejuvenation of tired muscles.

Treat yourself to a towel warmer. Those living in cold climates may especially appreciate the luxury of having a warm, cozy towel in which to snuggle up after a relaxing bath or shower. These handy pieces of hardware are relatively easy to install and can be well worth the investment in terms of comfort.

When it comes to coping with the extra stress of COVID, your home can become a sanctuary that helps you relax and recharge. Consider making upgrades that will make time at home more peaceful and enjoyable for you and your family.

QuickDrain USA creates European-inspired shower systems designed to be sleeker, cleaner, more ergonomic and more efficient than traditional showers. They aim for sustainability by making many products from recycled materials. Find more information at QuickDrainUSA.com.

Simple solutions to create a modern home oasis (BPT) - When people think of modern homes, many picture classic floor-to-ceiling glass windows, white rooms and contemporary furniture. The reality is, adding modern touches to your home does not require a rebuild, a huge investment or a blank space. A few design tips and simple swaps can transform your existing space into an updated, modern oasis. Embrace clutter-free living areas According to the minimalist mantra, less is truly more. Bring this mantra to life by decluttering countertops, mantels, walls and other visible areas in the home. Renowned designer and Delta Design Trust Member Justina Blakeney advises, “Have a designated spot where items go. If you are a collector like I am, it’s important to have a flow of “stuff” so as you invite more objects into your home, make sure you usher other pieces out. One way to achieve minimalism is to opt for space-saving furniture. Add nesting tables or benches that double as stylish seating and storage. Use baskets and bins to hide inevitable items like shoes, blankets and board games when not in use. Implement hidden filing systems and pledge to digitize documents moving forward, freeing up the office while practicing sustainability. Swap old fixtures and statement pieces Substituting fixtures and statement pieces can bring dramatic change to your home. To create clean, intentional design, incorporate objects with sleek bold lines. In the bathroom, opt for the Delta Trillian Bath Collection which commands attention and provides a striking prismatic design fit for the modern bathroom. This fixture choice represents a bold evolution of modern style, making a substantial impact while not requiring a full-fledged remodel. In the bath space or elsewhere, the addition of a head-turning mirror will emphasize focal points of a space and open up the room to create the illusion of larger floor plans. For a larger investment, consider a floor upgrade. The addition of a large, geometric rug, fresh tile or restored hardwood floors can make a space feel entirely new.

Embrace greenery and natural light Invite the outside in by embracing foliage and natural sunlight, no matter the season. Consciously incorporate florals to add depth and life to your living space. Consider an oversized planter to serve as a main feature of the room, hanging florals as artwork or succulents as tabletop decor. Do you lack a green thumb? Not to worry; textured faux plants can do the trick, with little maintenance beyond a light dusting. When it comes to natural light, play up your windows with simple drapes that emphasize the outdoors. When additional light is needed, exposed bulbs and bold pendants are easy, modern swaps to illuminate the home and its decor without feeling jarring. With these simple design tricks, your current space will be transformed into a modern haven in no time. 44

Cocktail railing and more: 5 trends for your deck

(BPT) - When determining the look of your outdoor living space, decking is only half of the equation. In many cases, it’s the deck railings that are most visible and the design element that makes the first impression. Railings serve a necessary safety function, but they also play an important aesthetic role explains designer Alison Victoria, star of HGTV’s "Windy City Rehab" and "Rock the Block." They frame an outdoor space and define the setting’s style and personality. Following are five fresh ways to frame up your outdoor space for maximum enjoyment and curb appeal: Industrial inspiration Industrial styling is all the rage, as homeowners seek to replicate the clean lines and modern looks found in today’s hottest hotels, restaurants and craft breweries. In backyards across the country, this commercial-to-residential trend can be seen in the increased use of aluminum railing styles that deliver sleek sophistication. One such example is https://www.trex.com/products/railing/signature Trex Signature Railing which offers a range of designs, including horizontal rods, mesh panels or glass inserts, in addition to traditional spindles all with the low maintenance and durability of aluminum. 45

Mixed materials While railing matched to the decking remains perennially popular, an increasing number of homeowners are taking advantage of customizable design possibilities afforded by new railing materials, styles and finishes. Visual interest can be achieved by juxtaposing materials such as composite, aluminum, glass and brick. For an eye-catching color contrast, consider pairing chunky, white posts with slim, black balusters. Or, mix classic and contemporary looks by using a traditional, wide railing to frame the deck while installing a slimmer railing style on staircases.

View-optimizing options If you want to enjoy your view, thin balusters finished in black are a great choice as they tend to optically blend into the environment, putting more visual emphasis on the natural surroundings. Glass panels are also ideal, of course, as are cable and rod rail designs. Conversely, if you have nosy neighbors or a view you’d rather minimize, opt for railings with thicker posts and more tightly spaced balusters to enhance privacy.

Form and function In certain cases, deck railings can be as practical as they are pretty. One of the biggest trends is cocktail railing or a drink rail. This approach uses a deck board as a top rail to create a flat ledge at just the right height for holding drinks and plates. This level surface also offers an ideal resting spot for potted plants, candles and other decorative accessories. By using boards that match the decking, you can achieve a look that complements your deck, while making great use of space.

Inviting illumination Augment the beauty of your railing and lengthen the time you can spend enjoying your deck with discreet outdoor lighting that can be integrated into railing posts and caps. Not only will lighting set the mood, it also adds safety and security. Consider LED dimmable options to maximize energy efficiency, such as Trex Outdoor Lighting, which also are weatherproof and salt-air proof; ensuring they will last for years. Make Taste and Nutrition a Priority with Powerful Pairings (Family Features) According to the “Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior,” studies have proven that eating meals together as a family can improve communication and relationships, which is especially important during times of uncertainty and life’s more difficult moments. Great-tasting foods like pork and pulses can be combined to bring families together with quality nutrition, which helps bodies survive and thrive. Pulses are the nutritionally dense, edible seeds of legumes including dry peas, beans, lentils and chickpeas. Together with pork, this pairing provides critical nutrients to support weight management and immune function, along with plenty of protein – providing all nine essential amino acids – fiber, B vitamins, zinc, iron, potassium, selenium and folate. As part of the Powerful Pairings initiative, launched by the National Pork Board and USA Pulses in an effort to promote pairing whole foods to bring taste, balance and nutrition to the center of the plate, this recipe for Green Chili Jack Smash Burgers encourages a nutritious way to enjoy fresh taste.
