Shop Smart This October to Benefit Breast Cancer Patients (StatePoint) It is not always easy to tell how your charitable dollars are going to be used, especially during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Honored every October, this is a time of year when many companies use pink logos on product packaging to symbolize support for breast cancerrelated charities. Unfortunately, these symbols are not always backed by a promise that proceeds will directly support research or those living with breast cancer. In the case of Susan G. Komen and its Live Pink program, the organization works closely with all its partners to ensure program details are transparent to consumers. And this year, 18 companies are donating a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of select products to Komen. As many consumers are doing much of their shopping online these days, Komen has created a site that makes it easy and safe to shop for a cause. Visit livepink.org to shop and learn more. “It just takes a moment to get involved and make a difference in the fight against breast cancer,” says Sarah Rosales, vice president of Corporate Partnerships, Susan G. Komen. “We’re honored to have so many partners giving consumers an opportunity to support breast cancer patients and fund lifesaving research.” Want to ensure you are making the biggest impact possible? Before making any purchase you assume benefits the fight against breast cancer, Susan G. Komen recommends asking the following questions:

1. Who is the program supporting? Is it clear what charity is benefiting from the program? Susan G. Komen, for example, requires all of its partners to clearly state that their program benefits the organization. In many cases, they will include Komen’s iconic logo on their packaging.

2. How will the charity use the donation? It should be clear where the proceeds go. Look for programs that support organizations which take a 360-degree approach to fighting the disease by funding breakthrough research, supporting compassionate public policy and providing patient support.

3. How is the program structured? Transparency is key. Is the company clearly stating how the money is raised and how much will be going to charity? For example, if it’s a donation per purchase structure, ask how much of the purchase price benefits the charity. Is there is a minimum or maximum contribution? Is it a flat donation regardless of sale?

By shopping savvy this National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, you can ensure your purchases are making the biggest impact possible. 3

Pro tips for leveling up your battlestation

(BPT) - Whether you're an avid or casual PC gamer, chances are you could improve your gameplay set-up. Most people develop their gaming station gradually, over time. The result? A hodgepodge of equipment and furniture that often falls short. The more you play, the more you may notice your setup isn't ideal - and could be throwing you off your game. Champion gamer and Evil Geniuses team member Tarik "Tarik" Celik offers his top tips for improving your gaming environment, and he should know: Tarik is a champion Counter-Strike player most recently winning ESL One: NY 2019. His advice? Start with the basics, like comfort, and go from there to play your best. 1. Location Where do you play? If your setup is far from your wireless router, or if walls and furniture stand in the way, you could have connectivity problems. You don't want internet speed or unreliability to disrupt your game play. If you can't change your location, the best solution is to create a hardwired connection as an easy fix. If you are forced to play wireless, try to reduce the distance and obstacles between your router. 2. Sit comfortably If you've ever gotten up from gaming with a sore back or neck, your chair could be the culprit. Investing in a comfortable chair can prevent pain and help you focus. 4

* Adjustable: This is crucial, especially if you have a desk that's not the ideal height. If you can also adjust the back's incline, this can keep you from hunching over while you game. * Cushioned: This goes without saying. A hard seat can hurt! The head rest should be cushioned too, helping to prevent you from slouching your head forward. * Lower back support: Long gaming sessions can mess you up, no matter how old you are. If you find yourself grabbing pillows to put behind you, get a chair with better lower back (lumbar) support. * Arm rests: Adjustable arm rests are ideal, since your height and arm length will differ from someone else's. Fully adjustable wrist-rests can also make a huge difference. Since you may not know how comfortable a chair is until you've given it a fair trial, buy from a company with a generous return policy. 3. Choose the best PC Whether you're new to gaming or upgrading, you'll want a gaming PC with the best processor to handle high-end games, plus a dedicated graphics card that will deliver a smoother frame rate and less lag. To avoid overheating, you'll also need a PC with a cooling system. 4. It's all about the visuals and settings Upgrading to a top-of-the-line monitor takes your gaming experience to the next level. LG Electronics' new UltraGear 27GN950 monitor with 4K Nano IPS 1ms Display is recommended by Tarik of Evil Geniuses for gamers who want to play multiple titles (including multiplayer and single player games). "When you compete at the top level, gear is very important. If you are not playing on the best gear possible, then you are going to be at a disadvantage," says Tarik. "Something really special about this LG monitor is that it is the world's first 4K resolution IPS gaming monitors with a 1ms response rate and it really does set it a head of the curve." "Monitors are extremely important for being able to play at your best. Apart from your computer, the monitor is the main component for your gameplay and you want to make sure that your visuals look good, your refresh rate is good and everything is smooth on your screen," adds Tarik. "Another thing I like about this LG monitor is that it is virtually borderless. It makes it look really sleek and keeps the distractions away so you can focus on your game." LG UltraGear provides the most immersive and competitive PC gaming experience, so your flow is never interrupted. 5. Sound also matters While gaming may be primarily visual, a high-quality headset brings sound to the next level. Beyond excellent sound quality, consider: 5

* Comfort: Check ear cup size as well as how adjustable the headband is. People with smaller ears may find round on-ear cups more comfortable, while others may prefer larger over-ear oval ear cups. * Microphone: If you play with others, you need a quality microphone with adjustable volume. * Dual-wireless audio system: This allows you to listen to music or chat while playing. * Noise cancelling: To immerse yourself in the game, this blocks distracting sounds in your environment. 6. Bells and whistles When choosing the best gear, details affect both comfort and appearance. * RGB lighting for walls, keyboard or headset can create a cool atmosphere for your space. * Keyboard - While full-sized keyboards may offer lots of great features, make sure you've got enough room for it. Most gaming professionals prefer a 10-keyless keyboard that's easy to use and ergonomic. * Gaming mouse options are a matter of personal preference. Wired or wireless? How does it feel in your hand? Experiment to see which style helps you play your best. Check out all the possibilities for state-of-the-art gaming technology at LG.com. LG Electronics' new UltraGear 27GN950 monitor offers a 144HZhigh-speed refresh rate, along with a 1ms response rate. What does that mean? You'll enjoy smoother, clearer action without tearing, blurring or ghosting for a seamless gaming experience. Plus its crisp, vivid colors and sharp details will let you fully immerse yourself in the game play, thanks to the 4K Nano IPS Display and VESA Display Stream Compression (DSC) Technology. Another bonus? You can raise, lower, tilt and pivot the monitor stand any way you want - in case you haven't found the perfect chair yet. Great Ways to Celebrate National Piano Month

(StatePoint) September is National Piano Month, a month-long celebration of a versatile and beautiful instrument. Whether you are a novice, a virtuoso or just a fan, there are many ways to celebrate pianos and the music that they make. To get inspired, check out these great ideas from singer, musician and lifestyle blogger, Rachael Burgess: • Listen to piano music. Piano music is versatile, from soft coffee house instrumental, to powerful ballads. This is the perfect time to delve into piano music and discover what you love. Make a playlist of your favorites, and listen all month long. • Play. You don’t have to be a seasoned musician to enjoy playing a keyboard. Most popular songs are made up of very simple chord progressions that anyone can learn to play -- and you are never too old or too young to try. • Support a pianist. Know any piano players? Tell them you would love to listen to them play and set up a time for a mini concert. • Mix up your practice routine. Are you already a pianist? Sit down and write out some musical goals you have for the month of September. Figure out ways you can practice better so you can achieve them. • Record a new piece. Learn a new song. Once you’ve nailed it, record it. You don’t have to share it, but it’s fun to look back and see how you’ve improved over the years. Or compose your own piece, choosing a topic that resonates with your soul. • Invest in a new keyboard. There is nothing like a new instrument to give you a greater appreciation for music. If you are shopping around, consider the expansive portfolio of digital keyboards and pianos from Casio, which have features that appeal to musicians of all skill levels. The Privia PX-S1000, for example, can be connected to your smartphone and controlled via the free Chordana Play for Piano app. You can also digitally record music by connecting your keyboard via USB to your computer. With keys meant to imitate real ivory and a warm rich sound, it’s a compact, portable option that’s modern and stylish. • Broadcast your talent. If you’re not ready to perform in front of a live audience, sharing your talent online can feel less intimidating. It gives you the ability to tape your performance, one or 100 times, so you can get it just right. From honing your skills to deepening your appreciation for the instrument, there are many ways to celebrate the piano this month and beyond.

Tips for Enjoying a Drive-In Movie Experience

(StatePoint) Social distancing guidelines across the country have made visiting a conventional movie theater difficult, if not impossible. However, what was once a relic of the past has now become an innovation in entertainment, the drive-in movie theater. The drive-in movie theater is nearly as old as the automobile itself. While today, there are about 300 drive-in theaters across the country, many more are popping up wherever there is space. Indeed, Walmart recently announced more than 160 of its parking lots will be converted into drive-in movie theaters around the country and many small businesses are doing the same. “A drive-in movie is the ideal event for anyone with a car because they can get out for a drive to enjoy a common experience with friends and family while taking appropriate social distancing precautions,” says Rah Mahtani, marketing communications manager for MINI USA. To shed light on this rediscovered institution of cinema, MINI USA created a guide for drivers to help them make the most of the experience. Here are five of their top tips: 1. Arrive early. Many theaters allow guests to arrive up to an hour before the show begins. Take advantage of this time to pick the best parking spot and stretch your legs. If the snack bar is open, grab a treat! 2. Bring the right car. A MINI Convertible is ideal for an open air viewing experience under the stars, while the MINI Countryman has room for the whole family. 3. Bring snacks. If your drive-in allows it, bring your favorite movie-viewing snacks like popcorn, soft pretzels, candy and soda. 4. Safely enjoy with friends. You can still safely go to the movies with your friends while staying socially distanced. Meet at a nearby location to rally to the drive-in in separate cars. If you’re a MINI owner, check with your local MINI owner’s club about a drive-in movie rally. You can even bring two-way radios or set up a group chat on your phone for live commentary of the movie. 5. Pack strategically. Be sure to pack a blanket in case there’s an evening chill in the air. A small pillow can also help support your back through the movie. Bring a small trash bag, too for all of your wrappers, empty cups and popcorn buckets. And lastly, if your car doesn’t already have one, bring a phone charger. No drive-in theater near you? No problem. Try hosting your own. For more drive-in tips and fun facts, visit miniusa.com/drivein. It’s no secret that over the past several months, almost everything we took for granted in our lives has changed dramatically, even nights at the movies. By taking a cue from the past, you can still enjoy the silver screen with extended family and friends.

Global flavors for your weeknight meals

(BPT) - What turns a recipe into a weeknight favorite? How about something easy and packed with flavor that can be made partly in advance? Add excitement by exploring cuisines like those of North Africa, with flavor contrasts of spicy, sweet and tart. The following recipes use grapes as a fresh accent to the flavorful North African spices in each dish. Grapes are also a handy snack while putting the finishing touches on dinner.

Harissa-spiced Steak with Grapes and Preserved Lemon delivers big flavor in an easy and quick way. Two North African ingredients, spicy harissa paste, a staple in Moroccan cuisine, and preserved lemon, a flavorful condiment with a mildly tart, but intensely lemony flavor, offer a zesty contrast to the refreshing and lightly dressed grape salad. Marinate the steak ahead of time - in the refrigerator during the day, overnight for more intense flavor, or even shortly before grilling. 15

Quinoa with Grapes and Roasted Carrots reprises the North African theme with a flavorful seasoning of cumin, coriander, paprika and cinnamon, accented by the subtle sweetness of crisp, juicy grapes. To save time, make the carrots and quinoa in advance and assemble this side dish right before serving. Double the recipe to make enough for leftovers for lunch the next day.

Keep grapes on your weekly shopping list so that they're handy for weeknight meals, a quick and refreshing dessert, or snack any time of day.

Deliver Taste and Nutrition with Comforting Dairy Dishes

(Family Features) Cooler weather calls for comfort foods, and it’s hard to top risotto for a heartwarming dish to share with the family on chilly days.

To achieve delicious taste without ditching your healthy eating plan, consider nutritionally balanced one-pot recipes like those from “Whole in One” by Ellie Krieger, several of which call for dairy to help fuel your loved ones’ meals. Milk is commonly viewed as a versatile staple to have on-hand for cooking and a nutritious beverage for families with essential nutrients such as calcium that promote bone health in children and teens.

“I’m always trying to create recipes that make it easier for people to cook and eat well,” Krieger said. “As a food lover and dietitian, I’m always looking for that amazing balance between health and taste. Dairy really can help get you there because it provides you not only great nutrition, but also great taste, texture and satisfaction.”

Turn to dairy-fueled comfort foods with recipes from Krieger like nutrient-dense Cauliflower Risotto with Shrimp and Peas. This dish offers a balanced, health-conscious way to enjoy flavorful meals while delivering essential nutrients found in dairy.

“Milk, cheese and yogurt all contain protein, and I think most people don’t realize that a cup of milk has 8 grams of highquality protein, which is more than an egg,” Krieger said. “When I tell people that, it’s really news to them. Protein really is key in many ways because people are often looking to get more protein into their diets.”

How to Make Kids’ Birthdays Special While Social Distancing

(StatePoint) While some of the traditions of a typical birthday are not possible these days, parents can find new ways to celebrate these important milestones. Here are a few ideas for making your child’s upcoming birthday feel special:

• Host a Virtual Party: Use video conferencing tools to host a party for your child. Consider picking a theme or activity for the event. Start with a meet and greet and then dive right in -- from painting and pottery to sing-alongs and science projects, there are many fun themes that work well from a distance. Remember to tell all your guests in advance what they will need to participate or even drop off pre-made goody bags with supplies and snacks to celebrate. • Plan a Drive-by Birthday Parade: These days, drive-by celebration parades are all the rage for graduations, birthdays and more -- and this is for good reason. What better way to honor a special occasion than by seeing everyone you love? Tell friends and family what time to drive by, encouraging participants to use signs, music, balloons and banners to make a splash. • Request Cards: Make a secret request to friends and family asking them to send cards in the mail. Kids love receiving mail, especially on their birthdays. Alternatively, ask loved ones to create video greetings or other electronic messages. • Give Fun Gifts: Don’t forget the presents! Colorful, interactive toys will brighten the occasion, making your child’s birthday and year to come special. Consider Myla’s Sparkling Friends from VTech, a new collection of interactive toys that talk, sing and light up with a kaleidoscope of colors. With flapping wings and tail feathers that wag, colorful accessories and unique songs and sayings, this line -- which includes Mia the Unicorn, Ava the Fox, Penny the Peacock and more – is packed with value at a great giftable price. • Take an Outing: Parents comfortable doing so might consider planning a socially distanced picnic in the park. Bring your child’s favorite foods, treats and games for a fun-filled day.

Birthdays may look a bit different this year, but that doesn’t mean your family can’t celebrate. Virtual parties, gifts and special greetings can give your child a sense of normalcy and make them feel special on their birthday.

Social Media and Kids: What Parents Can Do to Ensure Safe Use

(StatePoint) The negative effects of social media have been much discussed as of late, thanks to the recently released documentary on Netflix, “The Social Dilemma.” The documentary argues that while platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook have at times been used to facilitate social movements and meaningful change, they can also make people more anxious, polarized, and inclined to believe misinformation. What’s more, according to the documentary, these apps are structured to make their users obsessed with them. As many parents know, children can be susceptible to the most common pitfalls of social media, but there are some key steps that they can take to help ensure that children’s usage remains balanced, healthy and safe: • Sorting fact from fiction: Information about the world is often delivered via social media tools. Unfortunately, much of that content is actually misinformation. Parents can help stem the tide of “fake news” by teaching kids how to sort fact from fiction and pointing them in the direction of trusted sources of information. • Privacy measures: An enormous amount of data is gathered by social media companies. Parents should teach kids to be wary of sharing private information and opinions online. They can also add privacy settings to children’s profiles to ensure they are connected only to their friends and family. • Social media and feelings: Social media usage can be an emotional roller coaster. Parents should consider having a conversation with children about the way social media makes them feel. As part of this discussion, parents can remind kids that while “likes” and nice comments may make them feel good, it’s important not to rely too heavily on social media for emotional validation or real connection with friends. Unfortunately, cyberbullies and online “trolls” are active social media users, too, making social media apps a sometimes unfriendly place. • Monitoring usage: New tools are helping parents seamlessly monitor social media usage and protect kids from unsafe content. In fact, over 1.2 million families use the screen time management solution, OurPact. The app, which allows parents to block or limit app access automatically, gives families the flexibility to set schedules for usage around recurring activities like school and bedtime, keeping access well-balanced. Parents can even view screenshots of kids’ digital activity. Available at the iOS App Store and Google Play Store, parents can also sign up for an account at www.ourpact.com.

While the ever-evolving social media landscape can make it difficult for adults to keep up with the way their children are interacting with these platforms, parents can help protect their kids by communicating regularly and by using new tools.

How to Bring More Space into Bathrooms (Family Features) Today’s designers, architects and builders are creating modern bathrooms that are practical, luxurious, comfortable and accommodating. They know homeowners and homebuyers desire – even demand – these features regardless of the bathroom’s size or layout. Therein lies the challenge: How to create a feeling of spaciousness and openness without sacrificing valuable floor space, obstructing traffic flow or forfeiting storage space. Despite these impediments, building professionals can meet these bathdesign challenges and even exceed them with an option like Johnson Pocket Door Frame Kits.

Pocket doors can be installed in virtually any room but are particularly well suited for use in bathrooms, where space is often at a premium. The typical hinged door requires up to 14 square feet of floor space to swing open. A pocket door, conversely, slides into the wall, leaving the space in front of and on either side of the doorway open and available.

Pocket doors are commonly installed at the entrances to bathrooms and can also be used to conceal linen closets and washers and dryers when the bathroom serves double duty as a laundry room.

There’s also a growing bathroom remodeling trend of enclosing the toilet alcove to create a toilet “room” within the bathroom. However, space restrictions seldom allow for the installation of a swinging door, so remodelers often install pocket doors.

Pocket door frames also allow for items to be mounted on the pocket wall. For instance, when used with Johnson’s 151558PL Pocket Wall Reinforcement Clip Set and 5/8-inch thick plywood, the 1500SC Pocket Door Frame with all-steel split studs can support wall-mounted fixtures such as towel bars, shelves, framed mirrors or artwork. The pocket door frame kit comes equipped with soft-close hardware that allows doors up to 200 pounds to be opened and closed by the touch of a fingertip for less risk of pinched fingers and slammed doors. The frame also comes with self-tapping screws that work for both drywall and finish trim, and the smooth-rolling pocket door hardware and track exceed ANSI standards, meaning they can successfully complete 100,000 opening and closing cycles.

Another potentially unexpected benefit of using pocket doors in bathrooms is the free space gained can be used to install larger vanity cabinets, freestanding shelving units, bigger bathtubs and other fixtures that may have been squeezed out in order to accommodate swinging doors.

Bring personalized expression into kitchen design

(BPT) - Personalizing a kitchen's design is an opportunity to showcase true individuality. The space will feel like a true reflection of self when finished with handpicked details. Adding special touches throughout a space, from unique materials to striking statement pieces, can work together to form that cohesive, yet individualized feel. Merged aesthetic Merge classic and modern design elements, such as wood cabinetry or richly veined marble, with smaller personalized touches that help to bring the room together. To unite varying design elements, consider adding a mixed stone backsplash to complement a central color scheme. By rooting the color palette in opulent shades of white, the space will evoke a sense of comfort. Warmer shades add polished neutrality, allowing striking details to shine against casement windows for a flood of natural light. Streamlined synergy Select integrated appliances that seamlessly blend into the kitchen, rather than distract. Adding a stove-side niche places all essential seasonings within reach, while a mounted pot rack above the range keeps cookware in close proximity. Refresh existing storage options with brass and marble shelves to elevate traditional kitchen shelving. Customized expression Embrace elements that bring individuality into the space by opting for customizable, functional statement pieces. The Odin Kitchen Collection by Brizo provides expansive options for versatility, with seven warm-to-cool finishes, each creating a distinctively different expression. Additionally, maintain the clean, simple and functional Scandinavian design of the Odin Kitchen Collection by integrating personalized touches. A variety of handle options, from all-metal - matching finish or split finish - to wood, offer the ability to tailor the look. Contemporary nuances Choosing impactful lighting, such as oversized, contemporary golden pendants, helps to guide the eye and create a primary focal point. Complete the kitchen with chic counter stools that create a sleek, sophisticated edge. The kitchen should reflect just the right amount of expression with accent pieces, letting the space tell a personalized story through sophisticated touches that speak for themselves.

Healthy sleep is vital for school success

(BPT) - Healthy sleep is vital for student success. Yet, a new survey from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) shows that many students are not getting enough sleep, according to more than half of American parents surveyed. No matter where classes are held - in-person, online or in a hybrid format - the group is highlighting the importance of healthy sleep for students. "As many parents and caregivers try to create a routine for their kids, incorporating the right amount of healthy sleep is an important component," said AASM President Dr. Kannan Ramar. What's keeping kids up on school nights? From classwork to social media use, there are many things competing for the attention of schoolaged children and teens, interfering with their nightly sleep. According to 90% of parents, homework and early school start times are the top barriers impacting the healthy sleep students need each night, followed by time with friends (87%), social media/electronics use (86%), hobbies (86%), sports (85%), chores or jobs (83%), and band/music/clubs (78%). COVID-19 impact on sleep consistency

26

Another disrupter to sleep? The COVID-19 pandemic. One of the biggest challenges students have been facing during the pandemic has been maintaining a consistent and healthy sleep/wake schedule. According to the survey, four out of 10 parents acknowledge that remote learning affects their children's bedtime and/or waketime consistency. "Even though students may not need to catch the bus or carpool this school year, they should continue with morning and bedtime rituals, including getting up and going to bed at regular times so they get enough sleep," added Ramar. Parents are aware of impact of sleep About 94% of parents acknowledge that sleep impacts their children's mood, and 93% understand its correlation to performance in school. Impacts on physical health (92%), mental health (90%), and performance in sports or other activities (90%) are also widely reported by parents. Getting the recommended hours of healthy sleep on a regular basis is associated with better outcomes, including improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, emotional regulation, quality of life, and mental and physical health. Sufficient sleep also helps students: * Excel in the classroom by maximizing attention, memory and learning abilities * Perform better in sports by being faster, stronger and more accurate * Feel their best and have a more optimistic attitude toward life * Look their best and maintain a healthy weight * Have fun and enjoy life by making better decisions and staying safe The benefits of healthy sleep require not only adequate sleep duration, but also appropriate timing, daily regularity, good sleep quality and the absence of sleep disorders. The AASM recommends children 6-12 years of age sleep nine to 12 hours on a regular basis to promote optimal health, while teenagers 13-18 years of age should sleep eight to 10 hours per night. Parenting an online student? 5 reasons to include exercise

(BPT) - As the pandemic continues, health experts and physicians are concerned that with home and online schooling replacing in-person curricula - including PE classes - our children may not be getting the physical activity they need to promote their health. And that may be a bigger deal than parents realize. "Exercise during adolescent years is vital for building strong bones," states Jennifer Weiss, MD, FAAOS orthopedic surgeon and spokesperson for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS). "The bone mass gained during childhood helps determine how healthy bones and the musculoskeletal system will be throughout life." Stephanie Morris, CEO of SHAPE America, agrees adding, "Whether participating in remote learning or in-person classes, health and physical education remain essential for students' physical, mental and social-emotional health. And the more we can encourage kids to be physically active and maintain healthy bones and joints, the better they will be equipped to manage the challenges and stresses that are inevitably being felt in this COVID-19 era." Here are five facts for parents and guardians to understand when it comes to promoting healthy physical activity for your child.

Obesity is projected to rise. It's already a significant issue, and according to the CDC, children with obesity are more likely to have high blood pressure, high cholesterol impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and breathing problems such as asthma and sleep apnea. What's more, obesity can have a harmful effect on the entire musculoskeletal system, creating risk for several orthopaedic conditions. Unfortunately, current models estimate the childhood obesity rate could increase by 2.4% if school closures continue through December. Activity is crucial to health. Children and youth who are physically active tend to be healthier, have less body fat and lead more active lifestyles as adults. Still, the American Academy of Pediatrics reported in one study that fewer than half of all U.S. children were getting their recommended 60 minutes of daily exercise. Activity can boost academic performance. A CDC study found multiple links between physical activity and cognitive skills and attitudes, as well as academic performance, achievement and behavior. Instruction may be available. Parents or guardians are encouraged to check with a child's school to seek direction, since many phys ed teachers are offering online or printed instruction that can help devise at-home fitness programs during the pandemic. Seek out information for social-distance friendly muscle-strengthening movements such as cycling, weight training, yoga or climbing stairs. Alternately, bone-strengthening activities such as running, jumping rope or dancing can offer needed energy breaks that require little formal instruction. Parents can lead by example. The AAOS recommends guiding kids through stretches and warmup exercises, trying out a variety of games and activities, de-emphasizing winning, using activity as a reward and making the process as enjoyable as possible. For the sake of convenience, the activity could be broken up into 15-minute intervals throughout the day. The whole family could participate as a bonding experience, perhaps by walking the dog, raking leaves or going on a bike ride. Regardless of whether your child is studying online, attending in-person classes or combining those opportunities, it's important not to forgo the physical activity that will help protect their health during the pandemic. Take steps now to work at least one hour of exercise into the daily schedule. How to help your teen balance screen time in a virtual world

(BPT) - The new school year is here - and it may look a little different. Teens are gearing up for more homework, more papers, and especially this year, more screen time. As of March 2020, teen use of apps and digital services is up 70% in the U.S.(1), and 70% of kids ages 12 to 15 get more than the recommended hours of screen time per day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With screen time ever-increasing, teens are exposed to more blue light, which are high-energy wavelengths emitted from the sun, LEDs, and digital devices such as smartphones, computers, and tablets. Overexposure to blue light can lead to difficulty falling asleep and inhibit the ability to reach REM sleep. To help reduce effects of blue light, here are some strategies to help find a better balance for your teen. Be a healthy-habit role model Parents have an important opportunity to be a positive influence when it comes to healthy behaviors. They learn from everything you say - and more importantly, what you do. Limiting your screen time is the most effective way of reducing blue light exposure, by limiting your own screen time you show your kids how to treat media as a privilege. Encourage time together as a family without screens or devices present. Supplement with vitamins and minerals As kids spend more time outdoors and in front of screens, it's important to make sure they're equipped with the right nutritional support. Alive! Teen Gummy Multivitamins are an excellent source of 16 vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C, D, and Lutemax 2020, to help eyes filter blue light produced by the sun, LEDs and electronic devices*.

Set clear rules Teens often lack the maturity to moderate screen time on their own. Establishing clear rules will provide structure and help your kids make better choices in the future. For example, try sticking to a rule of no screen time during the hour before bed and enforcing electronics-free meal times. This allows everyone the opportunity to sleep better and wake up refreshed - as well as more engaging family communication. Make time for physical activity Go for an evening walk. Play a game of catch. Find a sport the whole family enjoys. A little physical activity goes a long way. It provides time away from screens and numerous benefits for physical and social health. Remember: Pay attention to what's on your kids' screens Before you let your teen buy a new video or computer game, do a little research, and find out what they are getting. Pay attention to ratings and try to limit them to games rated T (for teens) or younger. You can also use screening tools on TVs, computers, and tablets to block your teen's access to inappropriate material. And remember, a productive conversation goes a long way. Be open with your teens and follow these tips to help them set screen time boundaries. Back to school in the new normal: What teachers need most this fall

(BPT) - Heading back to school during the COVID-19 pandemic means most of our nation's teachers are facing unprecedented challenges this year. Some teachers are implementing new rules, procedures and classroom configurations to limit the spread of the illness. Others are creating entirely new online curricula for students who will be learning from home. Many teachers are tasked with doing both at the same time, often without additional financial resources to make it all happen. A recent survey of 1,000 U.S. teachers by the education nonprofit DonorsChoose found that 42% of teachers are planning to teach in a hybrid format this fall, with students undergoing a combination of online learning and in-person learning. Thirty-five percent will teach entirely remotely, while 8% will teach in person and 14% were unsure at survey time. Eighty-six percent of teachers report feeling uncertain, anxious and overwhelmed as they prepare for the coming school year, and 81% expect that their schools will be forced to go online only at some point this school year. "I feel like waiting for answers is the hardest part," notes Rosemarie, a teacher who responded to the DonorsChoose survey. "It is a wait-and-see with the health and safety of students, families and staff members always in the forefront." In the survey, teachers also revealed the resources they most needed as the school year began. Teachers in the classroom: Cleaning supplies and PPE Of those teachers who expect to return to the classroom, 79% say they need cleaning supplies and personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep their students healthy and safe. In fact, DonorsChoose - which allows teachers to create requests for school resources that the public can help fund - saw a surge over the summer in teacher requests for hand sanitizer, cleaning wipes, and air filters. Teachers have also been quick to request basic supplies like glue, scissors, crayons, and pencils, since 72% of teachers report their schools are no longer allowing students to share materials. 32

Teachers online: Instructional technology Many teachers began teaching online at the end of last school year. As school starts this fall, 52% of teachers report feeling more prepared to teach online than they did last spring, but there are still a number of challenges. The hardest part of teaching online, teachers report, is keeping students engaged. To do so, their greatest need is for instructional technology: laptops, tablets, document cameras, and other technology to help them do demonstrations and keep their students interested in the content. Fifty-three percent of teachers also report a greater need for technology for their students, so they can follow along at home. All teachers: Professional development

Even for teachers who have been teaching for years, this school year will likely feel like the first year of teaching all over again. The lessons they've built and refined over years of experience will have to be recreated to work for online or socially distanced learning. In the DonorsChoose survey, 41% of teachers say the professional development they need most is for online instruction techniques; 20% are interested in learning more about online tools and technology to help them become stronger at remote teaching. All of these resource needs can add up quickly for teachers as the school year begins. "There will be a much greater need for classroom supplies as teachers have to change many things in their classrooms to keep materials, belongings and children separated," says Gwendolyn, a teacher who responded to the DonorsChoose survey. "This expense will fall on the teachers." Since July, thousands of people have helped fund more than 70,000 teacher requests on DonorsChoose to help teachers start their year strong whether they're teaching at home or in the classroom. Still, there are nearly 50,000 teacher requests awaiting support.

The Knicker Revolution for Busy Women We've all had that moment. You're caught short and are forced to use the festival's filthy portable toilet or contort yourself in the inappropriately-named convenience on board a long haul flight. Trying to remove underwear for girls means you have to struggle to remove everything below your waist - a pretty tall order when you're trying to balance on one leg to avoid dropping anything on an offensive-looking floor. Inventor Aurora Tyas suffered one too many such experiences and was determined to do something about it. Travelling on a night bus in Peru, she looked down at the filthy floor of the toilet cubicle and shuddered in horror at the thought of how she was going to change her knickers. The unsanitary conditions were all totally unconducive to dropping anything on the floor, let alone trying to change her underwear as the vehicle swayed from side to side. Once safely home, Aurora got down to business and commissioned a survey which showed that women have been crying out for help in the underwear department. Key findings revealed that 35% said they change their knickers more than once a day while 67% of women who regularly travel or exercise said they wish they could change their knickers more quickly and easily. So she came up with Pop&Go Knickers which are designed to give wearers all the benefits of clean underwear with none of the discomfort of paper pants and are easily removed and quickly changed just by unfastening the clips at the front. Designed for hygiene and comfort, as well as ease of use, the knickers - a thong or briefs - are made from high quality cotton that is breathable, hygienic and long-lasting. These are not disposable knickers - they come with their own pouch that means you can keep a clean pair in your bag and once you've changed, can store the dirty pair in there too. Pop&Go went down a storm at their first outing at an outdoor adventure show, so Aurora has now gone national with her invention which she says will revolutionise life for women on the move. Aurora says: "I've timed it and balancing on your own shoes as you try to hold your trousers in one hand and change your underwear with the other takes nearly two minutes in a stable environment.

"Add in a dirty toilet floor, trying to keep your possessions safe and possibly a moving vehicle, you're going to end up sweatier and more stressed than when you started. "With Pop&Go Knickers you can complete the whole procedure in 40 seconds while standing up, or about 59 if sitting on a seat (and being discreet). And you don't come out of it feeling filthier than when you started." So whether you're travelling, going to festivals, embarking on a marathon walk in a hot climate of even at the end a long day in the office, Aurora says you need never worry again about not feeling fresh and clean at your destination.

The UK's $30 billion wardrobe revealed

Most of us will admit to a dark secret part of our wardrobes that conceal our fashion mistakes and outfits we aim to get back into, just as soon as we've lost that extra stone. But now new research reveals that UK consumers have around $30 billion worth of clothes which they haven't worn for a year hanging around in their closets. In the last year alone we left a staggering 1.7 billion items unwanted and untouched in our wardrobes. But with more than two thirds of shoppers willing to buy and wear pre-owned clothing, the report highlights ways in which consumers and businesses can benefit from taking at a fresh look at our leftovers - both financially and environmentally. The Valuing our Clothes report from WRAP, the UK's leading body on resource efficiency, provides the first big picture of the impact of our clothing choices. It also offers a fresh look at the financial and environmental aspects of the whole journey of clothing from raw material, to manufacture, purchase, use and disposal of our clothes. Each stage of that journey has a significant environmental impact, the authors point out. For example over 90% of the water footprint occurs during fibre and garment supply. Washing and drying clothes is the equivalent of around 10% of total carbon emissions from cars in the UK while the majority of the waste arises once an item is no longer wanted. But a third of all of the clothes we buy end up in landfill, which is bad for the environment and bad value. However there are significant opportunities to generate revenue of around $140 million if all these clothes were given to charities, local authorities or other organizations for recycling or re-use. WRAP say these existing options, or indeed new business opportunities, could keep more clothing out of the bin and landfill, ensuring value is retained for longer. Liz Goodwin, CEO, WRAP, says: "The way we make and use clothes consumes a huge amount of the earth's precious resources, and accounts for a major chunk of family spending. "But by increasing the active use of clothing by an extra nine months we could reduce the water, carbon and waste impacts by up to 20-30% each and save Ă‚ÂŁ5 billion. 35

"Consumers can realize the value of clothing by updating existing items for their own use, or selling or donating them for others to use. There are also significant opportunities for industry to capitalize on consumer interest and gain financially." The body says that making more use of these clothes through re-use and other routes such as design changes, alteration, repair and recycling, will benefit both families and firms across the country. It also goes a step further by identifying potential new business models for industry that can add to the bottom line, increase the range of services or stimulate markets. The recently-launched M&S & Oxfam Shwopping initiative has provided clear evidence that there's both retailer awareness and customer interest in new approaches. Another new business opportunity is retailers establishing 'buy-back' schemes which enable customers to sell own-brand clothes they no longer want back to the shop for re-sale. With more than half of those surveyed saying they would sell back items and over two-thirds happy to consider buying returned clothes, this type of initiative could provide an extra income stream from a ready customer base. Liz concludes: "This research clearly shows there are real financial and environmental benefits to be reaped from valuing our clothes more.
