A Streaming Solution for Subscription Fatigue

(Family Features) Entertainment seekers have an almost overwhelming number of options available today when it comes to viewing television shows and movies. The rise in alternative entertainment options, such as streaming video services, has only increased the amount of choices. With cable and satellite television costs continuing to rise, plus the monthly subscription fees charged by many of those streaming services, joining more entertainment platforms can add up over time. However, an option like Tubi, which allows entertainment fans to stream thousands of movies and TV shows without the hassle of credit cards, can help alleviate that; via its free, advertiser-supported service. “I admit it - I found someone new,” said singer, actress and dancer Carmen Electra of “Baywatch” fame, who is featured in new commercials alongside “Sex and the City” star Chris Noth as they look to find the cure for subscription fatigue during what appear to be typical therapy sessions. “At first, I felt guilty for leaving my first streaming love, but not anymore. Tubi has thousands of movies and TV shows and, to be honest, those monthly fees were starting to get old.” The service features more than 15,000 premium movies and TV shows - more than double the content library of other popular streaming providers - including everything from Hollywood blockbusters like Electra’s “Scary Movie” to smaller independent and foreign films, all of which are available right at your fingertips on nearly every type of device, including Android and iOS mobile devices, video game consoles, plug-and-play streaming devices and more. Entertain in Style (Family Features) It’s never too early to plan ahead, especially when you are expecting guests in your home. Your family and friends know and might love your style, but it can be important to spice things up now and again to impress your visitors. Factors such as lights, music and food can affect your guests experience in your home. To remain stylish and keep your party going, consider these tips for fun and festive home entertaining. Back to Basics Staying organized is key while entertaining guests in your home. Try to plan out every detail before the big event, which can allow things to go more smoothly on the big day. As you think out your plan ahead of time, making lists can be a helpful way to stay organized and ensure you get everything done. List out your guests, what needs to be picked up from the store and possible decorations you might need to buy or craft yourself. The possibilities can seem endless, but it’s important to have a plan in place before you start putting things together. Think about Theme There are numerous ways your style can be shown while entertaining. One way is to pick a theme or themerelated food dishes. One way to show your theme is through decorations. Placing them throughout your home can give the party some life and help guests get into the overall theme of the party. Light up the Party Transforming your home can be made simpler by changing the lighting. It’s typical for lights to be dimmed for parties to set a more relaxed mood. Other ideas include using candles, lamps or even hanging lanterns if you are entertaining outside. Make sure it’s bright enough so everyone can see, but dimmed enough to set the mood for the evening’s events. Set the Mood with Music Pick music that matches your theme and inspires that same feel throughout the house. If you’re going for a fun, energetic atmosphere, try something with a quick tempo, such as pop. If you’re wanting to relax, go for subtler, soothing tones. Try making your playlist before you entertain and listen to it a few times through, that way you can know what to expect and how guests will react to your music selections. Enjoy it Through all the anxiety and stress of entertainment planning, make sure you take time to enjoy yourself during the time guests are in your home. Some guests will notice if you’re not having a good time. Smile and remember to be present in the moment. Foster a Love for Literacy (Family Features) Reading plays an obvious role in academic performance, but it’s also an essential life skill. Literacy and effective communication go hand-in-hand, and inspiring a child to embrace reading and writing can help open a world of opportunity. Celebrate the importance of literacy and help the children in your life develop a love of reading with these ideas: Make literacy a gift they’ll treasure. Few kids remember what toys they received or when, but many have special memories of the books they read as children. Whether you gift a book that’s a classic childhood favorite, a story that held special meaning for you or even a book dedicated to today’s popular characters, encouraging reading is a gift that can keep giving for a lifetime. Do business where literacy is a priority. You can show your support for literacy by conducting business with retailers who not only support the cause, but also offer opportunities for the community to get involved. For example, The UPS Store is the exclusive sponsor of the Toys for Tots Literacy Program, which provides direct access to books and educational resources to the nation’s most economically disadvantaged children. Thanks in part to community contributions, the retailer has contributed more than $5.1 million, representing nearly 41 million books, to children across the country. Plant seeds of interest. Kids are most likely to embrace reading when the topics they’re reading about capture their attention. Whether it’s comic books or chapter books, there’s no right or wrong source of reading material. If you’re not sure where to start, consider introducing books that come in a set or series. Once your children find a favorite, they’ll likely be eager to read additional books that take their favorite characters on new and exciting adventures. Make reading a rewarding part of your routine. Encourage reading as part of your family’s everyday schedule. Wind down with a book at bedtime or make story time together a reward for good behavior. When you visit the store, make a visit to the book aisle just as exciting as a trip to the toy department. Attend events that celebrate literacy. Each year, the Rose Paradecaptivates millions of viewers with floats that are as beautiful as they are inspiring. To culminate its annual Toys for Tots Literacy Program, The UPS Store, which won last year’s top parade prize, will showcase tamarin monkeys, an endangered species, alongside toucans, salamanders, butterflies and parrots to represent hope and strong community ties on its 2020 float titled “Stories Change Our World.” In addition, the float was the inspiration for “Tell Your Tale,” a contest for young authors across the nation. The winning entries will be published in a special anthology book that will be handed out to 10,000 guests at the Post Parade: A Showcase of Floats event and available online. Steps to Plan a Remodel

(Family Features) Remodeling your home can be one of the most exciting projects to undertake. Whether you’re thinking about a bathroom update, kitchen overhaul or a new room addition, planning and setting realistic expectations are critical in ensuring your project goes as smoothly as possible. Consider these steps from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) before you get started. 1.Determine your goals and needs. Understand why you are undertaking the project, whether it’s for resale value or so you can enjoy your home more. If looking to increase resale value, consider the neighborhood and potential upgrades that can have the highest impact when going to market. If remodeling can make for a more comfortable space, create a list of must-haves and nice-to-haves then evaluate what’s feasible. Being realistic about needs and wants can help you create a budget. 2.Get inspired. Whether watching home improvement shows or browsing the internet, finding photos of styles and looks you admire can be beneficial when sharing your vision with a remodeling contractor. 3. Understand your budget. Setting a budget and staying within it is critical to the project’s success. Be sure to build in a contingency fund for unforeseen expenses. Project expenses should factor in the cost of products, labor and project management. There are also possible additional costs such as long-term maintenance, repairs, energy use and a dining out budget if undergoing a full kitchen remodel or hotel costs sometimes necessary with large-scale projects. To avoid any unpleasant surprises, be sure to get a written estimate and scope of work once you’ve selected a contractor.

15

4. Determine timing. If there is a specific event driving your remodel, work backward through the various project stages to determine a realistic timeline. Build in additional time as a buffer for unexpected delays and recognize remodeling contractors typically have long lead times and may require flexibility to deliver optimal results. 5. Find a contractor you trust. Home remodeling can be stressful no matter how well you plan, but a dependable partner can make the process go smoother. While some of the best references may come from neighbors, friends or family members, a trade association like NARI can help with its online “Find a Remodeler” tool. Make sure any contractor you’re considering has several years of relevant experience, as well as liability insurance. 6. Check references. When it comes to remodeling your home, you can never be too careful when choosing who to work with. Be sure to follow up on references, read reviews online and even check out the work of any remodelers you’re considering hiring, if possible. 7. Prepare for the process. Regardless of the size of the project, there will almost surely be inconvenience, noise, dust and potential delays. Your daily routine will most likely be disrupted. Because it can be especially stressful when redoing the kitchen or an essential bathroom, you’ll probably need to consider a backup plan or other arrangements throughout the duration of the project. Remember to also declutter the work area and protect or pack away any belongings that might be in the way during the renovation. (BPT) - During the blustery cold days and cozy nights at home this winter, there's no better time to rediscover the simple pleasures and quiet joys of indoor activities that help you relax and reconnect with family. Over the holidays, through winter break and beyond, families everywhere are eager to unplug, get away from screens, and spend quality time together. One great activity to help you do that is puzzling, which you can enjoy alone or with friends and family. Did you know that 1 in 2 Americans puzzle at least once a year? A study conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Ravensburger found that American adults puzzle for a number of different reasons - from millennials looking for an escape from their digital world to seniors who like activities that help them stay mentally fit. Perhaps also not surprisingly, 3 in 4 of those surveyed said that they puzzle most during the winter months. Here are a few of the benefits of taking a little time in your day to work on a jigsaw puzzle. "Me" time It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, especially after the holiday season has wrapped and the coldest winter months set in. This time of year, it's more important than ever to be checking in on your self-care habits and creating a sense of wellness in your life. Jigsaw puzzles provide a relaxing, tactile and meditative outlet that is sure to keep the winter blues at bay. You can choose a picture that is sure to bring you joy once it's completed - from a beautiful piece of art or a cultural icon such as a 3D replica of a double-decker London bus - puzzling gives you the opportunity to bring your favorite things to life in a fun new way. The results are all positive - puzzling helps you de-stress, improves your memory, and boosts your problem-solving skills. Puzzling on your own lets you choose how often and for how long you enjoy the activity. Leaving a puzzle in progress on a kitchen or dining room table lets you complete your puzzle at your own pace and reminds you to pause and take a moment to slow down every so often. "We" time In the Ipsos study, 7 out of 10 (69%) respondents who puzzle saw it as a family tradition activity, and 59% said that they like to do puzzles while they're on vacation or over holiday break. Jigsaw puzzles can be a fun and effortless way to reconnect with family and friends of all ages. When everyone gathers around the table to puzzle together, it offers opportunities for relaxed conversations and connection with each other, away from the formality of a meal or structured activity. You may learn something special and new from one of your loved ones during a casual "side conversation" while working on a jigsaw puzzle together. From piecing together the riddles in an "escape the room" puzzle to your own customized puzzle of a treasured family photo - Ravensburger offers collaborative puzzles that are perfect for family time. Working on puzzles allows everyone to unplug from technology, slow down and live in the moment together. In fact, 84% of those surveyed said that they usually puzzled together with others. Why do people like to puzzle, whether alone or together? Those who regularly puzzle said that their main reasons are relaxation (59%), fun (57%), stress relief (47%), and brain boosting (42%) - all of which are especially important to maintain during the short, cold winter days. No matter your age, you can open up the experience of puzzling to your friends and family this winter and beyond to take a break from your tech-fueled lives and enjoy spending time together. Kids, teens, parents and grandparents can all puzzle together - no user manual, batteries or complicated directions required!

TURNING GAMING INTO A CAREER: HOW GIRLS ARE TAKING THE REINS (BPT) - Careers in the video game industry are highly desirable, and for good reason. Working for a video game company can be rewarding, and equally important, turns a favorite pastime into an exciting career. However, for tween and teen girl gamers, the prospect of one day working in the video game industry may seem daunting. While 46% of the U.S. gamer population is female, women account for only 22% of video game developers. Women are taking the reins developing, designing and marketing video games. Lisa Wackenhuth Svanström, a 3D Artist at Star Stable Entertainment, a multiplayer game full of horses, magic and adventure, offers career advice to young women who may want a career in the video game industry: 1. What inspired you to build a career in the video game industry? “I am a life-long gamer, artist and digital creator and now, my official title at Star Stable is 3D Artist. Working for a company like this allows me to unite my interests and skills to create magic for girl gamers around the world. The artistic process of designing the 3D horses inspires me the most. It is so rewarding to have an idea in my mind, sketch out a new design and work with all the visuals such as 3D models, characters, textures, environments, props and ultimately release the final product for horse-loving girls who play our game every day. 2. What are the types of jobs for women in the development studio? To build a game, artists (3D, 2D, VFX and animators), designers and programmers need to work closely together from start to finish. Artists work on the overall creative vision. Designers work with the mechanics and features. Then, programmers use their coding knowledge to bring it all to life. We work with producers to make sure that all tasks associated with the development process are completed on time and tracking with the overall vision of the project. As the industry continues to grow and evolve, developers focused on mobile and virtual/mixed reality are in high demand, as are tech animators, who use a combination of creative and animation skills to solve issues related to art production. 3. What other types of jobs do women have in the industry outside the development studio? I have built my career in game art, but it takes dozens of people with specific skillsets for a video game company to succeed. Community managers interact with players daily to ensure they are having a positive experience with the game and make sure fan feedback is implemented. We also have women running the business at the executive level and as product managers and business developers. There are multiple opportunities, inside and out of the development studio, so you must embrace your skills and interests to find which career path you would enjoy most. 4. What are the most important skills needed to succeed? I recommend that budding video game developers find a network, get to know different game engines, become familiar with 2D and 3D software, and try new games all the time. Then, become a specialist in the aspect that interests you the most. Developing specific skills is important but developing into a well-rounded person with a broad view of the world is equally important. It is also good to dive into sports, learn the arts, take a computer class or explore theater. Never stop learning and challenging yourself. 5. What advice do you have for young girls who want a career in video games? “A career in the video game industry, perhaps born out of a hobby or passion, is legitimate and can be profitable too. Today, there are dedicated game developing programs at universities. And, whether a teen dreaming of a future career, a university student or already in a career, finding a role model is key. I am fortunate to work with smart, talented women across all disciplines in the business of video games, each of whom bring something different to the table. Seek opinions from colleagues or bosses who have different work than yours - find a marketer, back-end programmer or member of the executive team and learn from them. “It’s also important to find a company that embraces women in all roles and embodies a culture of inclusivity and accessibility - the Star Stable team is more than 50% women. Finally, give back. If every woman who is part of the 22% proactively mentors other young women, imagine the next generation who will one day grow up to become our colleagues!”

5 tips to help keep kids healthy during cold and flu season (BPT) – It’s here again that time of year when everyone seems to unwittingly pass colds and other illnesses around. As every parent knows, kids can bring germs home from school and share them with the entire family, spreading illness at warp speed. In fact, 60 million school days are missed every year by children nationwide due to preventable illnesses like cold and flu. What can you do to fight the spread of illness and help keep your kids — and you — healthier during cold and flu season this year? It's all about practicing healthy habits and making sure you have the right tools. Here for Healthy Schools campaign is working with schools, educators and parents to help reinforce healthy practices and curb the spread of illnesses in the classroom. As part of the program, Here for Healthy Schools spokesperson, actress and parent Sarah Michelle Gellar shared five tips for keeping your kids healthy during cold and flu season, and beyond: 1. Model healthy habits Your children pay closer attention to smaller things than you’d expect, says Gellar. She advises modeling the habits you want your children to follow. Demonstrate how you use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze. And be sure that they see you washing your hands often, especially before eating a meal. Actions do speak louder than words, so practicing what you preach can go a long way to instilling these healthy habits in your kids. 2. Reinforce healthy habits with caregivers Gellar explains how important it is that caregivers and others who spend time with her children follow the same healthy habits she wants to teach her children. I truly rely on my village to help me, says Gellar. This means my children interact with many different people within their day-to-day activities, and inevitably come in contact with even more germs. She makes sure everyone who spends time with her children understands the vital role these healthy habits play in helping to avoid preventable illnesses. 3. Involve kids in preparing healthy meals Food is so important in our family, says Gellar. Most of our fondest memories take place in the kitchen. By making her children part of the process of planning, preparing and serving meals, she stresses, they are constantly learning not only how to eat healthy, balanced meals, but also how to create one for themselves. 4. Get a flu shot Gellar insists that everyone in her household get a flu shot each year, at the beginning of flu season, to help her family stay flu-free throughout the year. This also helps prevent spreading the flu to anyone else who might be vulnerable. 5. Keep kids home when they’re sick. While we want to limit the number of days out of school for children to ensure they’re thriving and growing, Gellar explains, it’s important as parents to understand when to keep them home. Because colds, flu and other illnesses are easily spread, sending children to school when they’re clearly under the weather will likely lead to more children in the classroom getting sick and missing school. Following these healthy habits will help keep everyone's sick days to a minimum this year, so children can learn, grow and thrive at school.

5 tips to keep vintage clothing fresh anytime

(BPT) - Vintage clothing, while beautiful and unique, can be tricky to take care of. No one knows how to properly take care of these delicate items better than luxury vintage clothing retailer, What Goes Around Comes Around. Below you will find simple ways their team keeps clothing in the top condition that it deserves: 1. Wear layers: With packed schedules and hectic work days, you often end up wearing the same thing from the office to your evening plans. To ensure garments stay fresh and odorless during those long days (and nights!), try layering your vintage pieces over camis and slips. 2. Try gentle steaming: Should you need to do a quick outfit change during the day, try this: instead of spending hours steaming your clothes or racking up the dry-cleaning bills, consider LG Styler - an athome steam closet that reduces light wrinkles and odors, and sanitizes fabric items in 20 minutes with the gentle power of steam - no chemicals! 3. Line your pockets: An industry-insider tip is to keep dryer sheets inside the pockets of your vintage jackets, denim and pants. This will keep your clothes smelling fresh throughout your busy day. 4. Read the labels: Always pay attention to the care instructions of your clothing. Many delicates call for dry-cleaning or hand-wash only - especially cherished vintage denim, which should be kept chemical free, and rarely (if ever) washed. LG Styler is a great option to care for these garments that you don't want to risk dry-cleaning or washing on your own. This system is gentle on clothes and chemical-free to ensure your items won't tarnish. 5. Store neatly: Store handbags and shoes in dust bags, fold sweaters neatly on a shelf or in a drawer and bring lesser worn items out to refresh every few months. 24

Don't let winter sports injuries freeze your fun (BPT) - For many people, dropping temperatures mean it's time to bundle up and head outdoors for their favorite winter activities. Whether you're a sports enthusiast hitting the ski slope, a casual skater heading to the local rink or a parent ready to tackle the nearby sledding hill with your child, great times and memories await. However, it's important to make sure your fun winter day isn't spoiled by an accident or injury. "Winter sports and recreational activities have great health and cardiovascular benefits," says Joseph Bosco, M.D., FAAOS, orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine and first vice president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. "However, it's important not to underestimate the risks that cold weather can bring. Hospitals and health care clinics across the country see an increase of bone and joint injuries related to winter activities, and many could be prevented with the right planning and preparation." Injuries can happen to anyone at any time, whether you're on the ice or on the slopes. You don't have to be an extreme athlete to experience the risks. Common winter sports injuries include sprains, strains, dislocations and fractures, but more traumatic injuries to the head and spine can also occur. Consider these tips from Dr. Bosco and the experts at the AAOS. Be prepared: Keep in shape and condition muscles before participating in winter activities. What's more, on the day of your activity, warm up thoroughly before playing outdoors. Cold muscles, tendons and ligaments are vulnerable to injury. Finally, have ample supplies ready, including water for before, during and after activities. Dress correctly: Always wear well-fitting protective gear, including goggles, helmets, gloves and padding. Wear several layers of light, loose and water- and wind-resistant clothing for warmth and protection. Finally, proper footwear that provides warmth, dryness and ankle support is key. Know the rules: Know and abide by all rules of the sport in which you are participating. If you're new or need a refresher, consider taking lessons from a qualified instructor, especially in sports like skiing and snowboarding. Learning rules of the hill and skills like falling correctly and safely can reduce the risk of injury. Watch the weather: Pay attention to warnings about upcoming storms and severe drops in temperature. Seek shelter and medical attention immediately if anyone is experiencing hypothermia or frostbite. Make sure everyone is aware of proper procedures for getting help, if injuries occur. Use common sense: Never participate in an outdoor sport or activity alone. If you become injured, you need someone to help you and respond appropriately so you can get necessary medical care. What's more, if you become exhausted or start to feel pain, stop the activity for the day to avoid injury. "Don't let winter sports injuries freeze your fun," adds Dr. Bosco. "By keeping in good physical condition, staying alert and stopping when you're tired or in pain, you can enjoy the best of winter and reduce your risk of injury." Vast majority of Americans lose sleep to binge-watch TV (BPT) - A new survey from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) found that 88% of U.S. adults admitted to losing sleep due to staying up late to watch multiple episodes of a TV show or streaming series - and this number jumps to 95% when looking at 18- to 44-year-olds. The same survey shows that Americans rank sleep as their second most important priority, following family. But actions speak louder than words, and it's not just TV shows that are taking precedence over sleep. Two-thirds of adults have lost sleep due to reading, 75% of men have lost sleep watching sporting events, and 72% of those aged 18-34 have put video games ahead of bedtime. "Choosing to binge on entertainment at night instead of sleeping has serious ramifications," said AASM President Dr. Kelly A. Carden. "Sleep is essential to health, well-being and safety, and chronic insufficient sleep can lead to an increased risk of health problems, mood disorders and motor vehicle accidents." Here are a few tips to help binge-watch responsibly: Set an episode limit. Commit to a specific number of episodes at the beginning of your watching session. To decide how many episodes you can fit in, determine your bedtime. The AASM recommends adults get seven or more hours of sleep for optimal health. Use this bedtime calculator to find out when you need to go to bed based on your wake time. Get out of the "auto-play" loop. Many streaming services will automatically launch episodes one after another to ensure you keep watching. This makes it easy to think "OK, one more episode," leading to late nights and sleepy mornings. Check settings to turn off the "auto-play" and ensure you are consciously choosing when to continue watching, and when to power off for bed. Make time on the weekend. If you enjoy streaming for longer periods, set aside part of your weekend to catch up on your favorite shows. Reserving Saturday or Sunday afternoon will provide more time for getting immersed in your shows, while still providing adequate time for sleep. Filter out blue light at night. If you stream content on a cell phone or tablet, make sure you have altered the device's blue light setting to minimize the alerting effects of screens at night. Bright light, such as that from a mobile device, sends signals to your brain that indicate you should be awake. This can make it difficult to fall asleep. Adjust your screen's brightness in the evening and avoid any electronics at least 30 minutes before bedtime. Avoid using devices in bed. Streaming from the comfort of bed can also impede your ability to fall asleep. It's best to keep electronics out of the bed so that you associate your bed with sleep when you lay down at night. If you are experiencing ongoing sleep problems, talk to your medical provider, who may direct you to the sleep team at an accredited sleep center for help. How to win 'Best Awards Show Party' this year

(BPT) - Crazy about the movies? Love inviting friends over to watch the awards shows every year? Or maybe thinking about throwing an awards-watching party for the first time? Thrill your friends with a party worthy of the stars, with a focus on fun. You can win "best producer" for throwing an unforgettable party for your friends, using some of these tips. Dress the part Get out your best outfit and encourage all your guests to glam it up for the big night, too. For those who don't have formal wear and aren't inclined to rent, you could suggest they dress up as one of their favorite movie characters instead. Make it sparkle Look for glittery gold and silver decorations, tableware and party props for your soiree. Otherwise keep the color palette for your party decorations simple and elegant, like black and white with red accents. Usher them in with style Consider renting a red carpet for your porch or foyer or create a "walk of stars" on the floor - cut out stars from gold craft paper and write your guests' names on each one. Place them along the floor of your front hall or entrance. 27

Treat them like VIPs Awards shows are long, so make sure you have plenty of food to keep your guests happy! You don't need a sit-down meal, but if you like to cook, conjure up some fancy hors d'oeuvres to share. Or you can create a large charcuterie board for your guests to sample a variety of meats and cheeses, sliced bread or crackers and colorful olives and veggies. Follow up with snacks like movie-theater type popcorn and candy. Limited space? Create a "canape cart" to present your snacks for an extra elegant touch. Pour the champagne of the stars Nothing says "awards night" like a great bottle of bubbly. Drink what the stars enjoy by pouring PiperHeidsieck Cuvee Brut, the sole champagne of Hollywood's most famous red carpet event for the last six years. At this year's awards it'll be served in a limited-edition magnum offering a special tribute to cinema in the Roaring Twenties: a replica of their label from the Prohibition era, which began 100 years ago. Piper-Heidsieck has long been connected with the movies. In 1933, one of their bottles made its film debut in Laurel and Hardy's "Sons of the Desert." And in 1964, the champagne celebrated Rex Harrison's award for "My Fair Lady" with a tailor-made 48-liter bottle that was as tall as the 5-foot-10 actor himself. Learn more about the rich cinematic history of this unique champagne at PiperHeidsieck.com. That's entertainment Make the night memorable by turning it into an extra-special event, especially during breaks or when the action slows down. * Set up a "red carpet" selfie spot with a special backdrop curtain where guests can pose and post pics on social media. * Create games like awards show bingo, with squares for things like when a winner thanks their agent or a presenter flubs a name. * Provide ballots for everyone to vote for the winners, giving fun prizes for winners - including "fewest correct predictions." * Invite guests to offer their best (or worst!) movie star impressions and guess who they're impersonating. * Play "name that film" using movie soundtrack music. Thank them for the memories Give your guests "swag bags" as they're leaving, complete with treats, a movie-themed game, DVD or other fun mementos - like their star from your "walk of fame" or a snap of their best selfie pose. They're bound to ask you for an invite to the next awards show party!

MY WORDS TO SINGLE PARENT FAMILIES: WHY NO ONE SHOULD EVER GIVE UP. I became a Single Mother of a charming baby boy, on July 24, 1994. I never thought I’d become a Single Parent. My Mom & Dad was married for 40 years. Back then, it was rare and often times, got ridiculed or judged for being in a one parent household. At times, some people would say, “You can’t teach a boy how to be a man!” Then there were others who made Single Parenthood the most sinful thing one can do. Truth is, we never know how someone may become a Single Parent. There are so many reasons, however, many assume the worse - a deadbeat parent. Everything in life has its ups and downs, including being married. I never viewed Single Parenting from a negative perspective. I wouldn’t change my experience for anything in the world. I was a party-goer in my early adulthood, but when my son was born, I promise you I never missed it the night life. I lost my own Mom tragically 2 years before he was born, so having this little guy around bought me joy. He actually saved my life. Not only was I still able to pursuit my dreams, so was he. When my son was 2 years old, I had a final TV Production class to attend, but no babysitter. I recall asking my Instructor if i could make up the class. He told me no and that I would have to start from scratch. I began explaining my situation to him and could not believe it when he said, “bring him with you.” After bursting out in tears, I guaranteed him that my baby would not be a distraction. It seemed everyone was drawn to him. Not only was he a good baby, my son was there when I received my certification. At that moment, I knew that as long as I am upfront, things meant for me will work in my favor. I launched INFINI Productions in May 1991, lost my mom, had a child and he inspired me to continue with my original goals with the company I planned to build. We both fell in love with Fine Arts. I was a Single Parent for the first 10 years of his life. He was named Student of the Year in Fine Arts by our hometown Mayor, in his high school senior year. Kendall dedicated his time to coach children, including his little sisters, to perform live in front of an audience, he attended and graduated from American Musical & Dramatic Academy (AMDA) in NYC and is now studying Television & Film in Hollywood, California. Together, he and I produced multiple feature films, a game show, radio and a musical stage play, that became a huge success locally. In 2015, we launched Self Talent Exchange and decided to revive Infini Entertainment Studio in 2020. I dreamed of someday planting my feet down on the grounds of Time Square in New York City and Los Angeles/Hollywood, California. Little did I know, my son’s accomplishments would earn me the opportunity. Kendall received the FUTURE FILMMAKER Scholarship and will remake my first movie title IT TAKES A VILLAGE in Chicago April 2020. To all Singie Parent Families - never give up on your dreams. Just because you’re a Single Parent or are being raised by one, doesn’t mean you can’t be successful.. I know based off experience, how challenging it is but putforth the effort. You can do anything you’re passionate about continue shooting for stars. Ametra Self
