The perfect shot: The story of a boy and his photography

(BPT) - In a year like 2020, dreams can still come true, even for those with a critical illness. Just ask Colton, a young boy from South Carolina. After he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Colton found he loved taking pictures with his smartphone. He's been at the beach every day, taking photos of the calming waves at sunrise and sunset. Colton's passion for photography has become a vital distraction for him as he undergoes treatment. His mom, Sharon, said when she would take Colton for his monthly scans, the two would pick locations where they could stop afterward and take some good photos. One spot Colton really liked in particular was the public garden. "The opportunity to think about taking photographs helps him feel less anxious about his appointments," his mom said. "[It] provides him better focus and relief after we've left the doctor's office." A perfect shot at his dream career

Colton's distraction eventually turned into a passion. He said it's his dream to become a photographer. He even discussed his ambitions in a "life plan" project he did for school. However, Colton knew that if he wanted that perfect shot, he would need quality equipment. Colton's wish didn't go unheard. Make-A-WishŽ, along with partner Hadwin-White Subaru, worked to make Colton's desires of being a professional photographer a reality as part of the Subaru of America Share The Love™ event. With support from community donors, enough money was raised to get Colton his own professional photography gear. After receiving it, he embarked on an adventure to take photos along the South Carolina coast. But, of course, to be a professional photographer he needed a professional photoshoot. Gathered together with volunteers, family and representatives from Hadwin-White Subaru and Make-A-Wish South Carolina, Colton captured photos of a 2021 Subaru Forester among the moss-draped oaks at famous Brookgreen Gardens. "Because of his wish, Colton has something to look forward to," his mom said. "He can be creative and truly set his goals for the future." With his wish granted, Colton can remain resilient as he powers through treatment. His story provides hope and insight to others walking in his shoes. An inspiration to us all A wish is empowering and life-affirming. For many, it's the start of feeling normal again; for others, it serves as a launching point into new treatments; for some, it's the beginning of hope. The Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation, a national charity that provides financial assistance to help people pay for their prescription medications, offers these tips for reducing your out-of-pocket costs for the lifesaving medications you need. Talk to your healthcare team. Be honest with your doctor and pharmacist about the challenge of affording your medications. It may be difficult for you to talk about your finances, but remember, your healthcare team is on your side. Let them know what you can afford and they may be able to tailor a treatment plan that fits within your budget. 7


Look into 'Extra Help.' Medicare beneficiaries may qualify for programs like, Extra Help, also known as the Low-Income Subsidy program. This program can significantly reduce your prescription costs. Ask for generics. Many name-brand drugs now have generic equivalents, especially if the drugs you're taking have been on the market for a while. Generics are significantly cheaper than their namebrand versions. And don't worry. Generics are run through the same safety and efficacy tests by the FDA to ensure their quality and effectiveness. Resolve to achieve healthy sleep in 2021

(BPT) - According to a recent survey from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), 85% of U.S. adults do not get the recommended seven hours or more of sleep every night. After a challenging and stressful year, the New Year provides Americans with the opportunity to refocus on the importance of making healthy sleep a priority. "Our survey findings show a worrying trend of national sleep deprivation," said AASM president Dr. Kannan Ramar. "Insufficient sleep contributes to the risk for several of today's public health epidemics, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. As such, it is critical that we incorporate healthy sleep habits and routines into our daily lives to be our best in 2021." Why should we make healthy sleep a New Year's resolution? The AASM recommends that adults sleep at least seven hours each night to promote optimal health and well-being. In the same survey, slightly more than one-third (34%) of Americans said they sleep for seven or more hours only two nights - or fewer - each week, in line with findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Regularly sleeping less than seven hours per day is associated with an increased risk of developing chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and frequent mental distress. What is inhibiting us from achieving the recommended seven hours of sleep? Despite evidence showing the importance of adequate sleep, it often can take a back seat to other behaviors we find important. According to the AASM's July 2020 survey, a vast majority (68%) of U.S. adults lose sleep due to drinking alcohol past bedtime. Americans also report staying up past their bedtime to binge-watch a TV show or stream a video series (88%), read a book (66%), watch a sporting event (58%) and play video games (50%). How has the pandemic impacted sleep? With a change in daily routines, the COVID-19 pandemic is also disrupting sleep for Americans. According to the AASM survey, one in five Americans (22%) are sleeping worse due to the pandemic, and 19% are getting less nightly sleep. "Despite the fact that many Americans are no longer commuting to and from work, it is paramount to establish and maintain morning and bedtime rituals, such as getting up and going to bed at regular times to achieve adequate sleep," added Ramar. What are some tips to kick off the New Year with healthy sleep?

* Obtain adequate sleep - Set a bedtime that allows you to get enough sleep so you wake up feeling refreshed and alert. Identify an appropriate bedtime for your age and lifestyle using the AASM bedtime calculator. * Establish a bedtime and waketime routine - Consider developing a nightly routine that evokes calm and relaxation, which may include reading, journaling or meditating. Even for those working remotely, allow ample time to wake, reflect and prepare for the day ahead. * Ensure the bedroom is a space for sleep - Limit noise and distractions by making your bedroom quiet, dark and a little bit cool - and only use the bed for sleeping, not watching TV or reading. * Set boundaries for blue light exposure - Consider setting a technology curfew by turning off your TV and other electronic devices 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime. Silence your notifications and charge your devices away from your bed so you are not tempted to look at social media or news alerts. * Limit alcohol, caffeine and large meals before bed - Avoid consuming caffeine after lunch and avoid alcohol near bedtime, as both can disrupt sleep. Finding confidence in quarantine: Survey shows how COVID-19 influences makeup usage

(BPT) - As being in quarantine and weathering the COVID-19 pandemic continues to put a damper on things, American women are turning to their makeup routines to feel a sense of control and comfort, according to new research. In September, marketing firm OnePoll asked 2,000 American women about how they're staying positive and confident as their time in quarantine and social distancing drags on. According to the findings, 51% said wearing makeup and changing up their looks turned out to be a small way to help them escape the stress of current affairs. If you're feeling the need to switch things up, you're not alone. Read on to discover more survey findings to inspire ideas to help you feel your best. Going for natural beauty: Since the onset of the pandemic, we've seen a palpable shift in mood to a more low-key, understated aesthetic. For that reason, respondents identified a rise in more natural makeup looks as a key trend of 2021.

While nearly half of respondents (49%) admit to ditching their normal makeup routine, just over a third (36%) say that wearing at least some makeup actually gives their mood a lift. One in four (24%) have gone as far as trying new cosmetics, while just over half (51%) say that using makeup to change up their appearance - perhaps to compensate for the face-covering - lets them feel a sense of control and comfort during a stressful time. Underwear through the years: How styles evolved

(BPT) - From tag-free boxer briefs and seamless bikinis to weightless cotton fabrics and moisturewicking technology, there's a go-to type of underwear for everyone. Influenced by notable pop culture moments and the evolving fashion industry, underwear styles have taken huge leaps throughout the years. 5 ways COVID-19 changed our daily drive

(BPT) - It is an indisputable fact that the COVID-19 pandemic changed a lot about our daily lives, including our relationships with our vehicles. While Hankook Tire's latest Gauge Index found that 60% of Americans are driving every day, as opposed to only 19% in April 2020, many of our habits behind the wheel have shifted in light of everything this year put in front of us. 1) We're spending less money at the gas pump. The COVID-19 pandemic quickly closed many regular driving destinations, including office buildings, schools, restaurants and retail, which in turn gave drivers fewer places to go. While the amount of driving we'll be doing over the next few months is still uncertain, the positive impact on wallets is still there: 70% of Americans say that they have spent less money on gas since the start of the pandemic. And when they do need to fill up the tank, drivers are strategic about it. Since the pandemic, over three-fourths (77%) make a plan to get gas while running errands to limit their time out of the house. 2) There are designated errand runs - and designated runners. Americans are also strategic with how and when they leave the house for essentials. Many are not comfortable making a quick run to the store to pick up something they forgot for dinner. Nearly two44


thirds (64%) say they now save all of their errands for one day or do curbside orders to limit potential exposure to the virus. Another half (53%) have a designated errand runner, so only one person has to leave the house. 3) Rush hour is less rushed. With more Americans continuing to work from home and students taking classes online, rush hour is proving less intense. Nearly two-thirds (63%) of drivers recognize that normal traffic patterns have shifted since the start of 2020. Another 65% confirm there is less traffic on their regular routes though that largely depends on where you live. Hankook found that drivers in the Northeast saw the most significant impact on their regular traffic flow, where 71% of drivers say their daily routes have fewer cars on the road. 4) Comfort levels are shifting gears. As a result of the pandemic, 75% of Americans are not comfortable using public transportation. However, confidence behind the wheel is down, too - just over a third (36%) say they are less confident driving since the start of the pandemic, perhaps because they aren't doing so as often. Interestingly enough, men are almost twice as likely to say they're less confident behind the wheel as women ... 44% vs. 28%. Additionally, people are careful about who they drive with. Two-thirds (66%) are not comfortable getting into a car that belongs to someone outside their household. Another two-thirds (63%) are not comfortable having passengers from outside their household in their own vehicle. 5) Face masks are the new sunglasses. 2020 has not just changed when and where we use our cars, it is also changing what we keep in them. Most Americans (81%) keep a face mask in their car, the Gauge found. More than half (55%) have a designated spot for it in their vehicles - be it in the glove compartment, center console, rearview mirror, or the gear shift. And 72% say they have hand sanitizer in their vehicle, too. We will have to wait and see which of these trends will stick around and which are more temporary reactions to a tumultuous year. However, one thing is for certain: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted how we view, use and depend on our vehicles.

These stability and manufacturing issues can lead to limited production capabilities, leaving governments and communities fighting for available supplies. Distribution and storage is complex, with one option requiring more than -70 degrees Celsius refrigeration. Supply chain issues may be an ongoing issue. Small biotech with big ideas and the potential to save lives While leading pharmaceutical companies are spearheading the fight against COVID-19, it's important to consider the potential technologies that smaller organizations are researching. While celebrity chefs across Britain have spent years on a mission to make cooking more accessible, it appears youngsters still have a way to go when it comes to the basics. Indeed, according to research from Mintel, nearly a quarter of 16-24-year olds confess to having problems cooking pasta correctly. And more than one in five adults, rising to two fifths of young cooks, admit making rice gives them the noodle. Some 34% of men agree that fresh pasta is easier to prepare than dry pasta - rising to 39% of 16-24s. By contrast, women, are more confident cooking dry pasta with only 28% agreeing fresh is easier to prepare. Regionally it’s Londoners who have the most problems with 18% failing to capture that al dente texture, compared with just eight per cent in the north east and Scotland. However, when it comes to rice it’s all change - as 35% in the east and west Midlands have difficulty with the dish, falling to 20% in London and 17% in the south east and east Anglia. It appears that the efforts of some of Britain’s best loved chefs to make cooking easier and more accessible have gone rather off the boil. Indeed, it seems that this lack of confidence in being able to cook has resulted in an added cost being passed on, as consumers stump up for pricier chilled pasta as an easier option. Pasta is seen as an affordable meal solution - a massive 86% of those polled agree, rising to 89% of 16-24 and 45-54 year olds. Meanwhile, rice is deemed a healthy and nutritious meal by eight in 10 people, but only 30% are convinced it’s healthier than pasta and potatoes. Reflecting Britain’s curry culture, Basmati tops the list of favourites with 69% tucking into the tasty accompaniment while 63% prefer long grain, 40% opt for microwavable, 28% select savoury and 27% enjoy wholegrain or brown. Thai or Jasmine at 13% and Arborio or risotto 17% are lower down the shopping list.

If you are eating a healthy balanced diet and take some moderate, regular exercise then chances are your bloated tummy is down to your stressful lifestyle. In the UK, more than a quarter of women find they can expand by as much as a whole dress size when suffering from an upset stomach, according to a survey by anti-diarrhea tablet manufacturer Imodium Plus.

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that stress is bad for your health, but while most women are aware of this, many still haven’t made the link between stress and stomach upsets. So, while many women try to watch their weight, only a fifth of them believe stress can be associated with diarrhea and bloating.

This problem is set to become even more widespread as two- thirds of women experience poor worklife balance levels, according to the study. With high stress levels and little time to eat and exercise properly, the chance of women developing stress-related digestive health problems such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and diarrhea is significantly increased.

This stressful modern lifestyle is not only affecting women’s waistlines but also their self-esteem and happiness. A bloated stomach leaves more than half of female sufferers feeling self-conscious, while 56 per cent feel unattractive because of it. Furthermore, two-thirds of sufferers say their clothes don’t fit them properly because of the bloating.

The psychological implications of an unsightly blown-out gut are far-reaching as half of all women say they just do not enjoy life when they are bloated. Eight per cent even say it is affecting their work. This is bad news when you consider that a fifth of women suffer from the condition more than once a month.

Younger women are incapacitated the most and half suffer from not only an upset stomach but the associated symptoms such as bloating too. A quarter of women admit they would like to do something about it but just don’t know how to treat the problem.

Experts are calling the poor digestive health trend ‘stomach stress’ but claim it can be successfully managed and even dispelled with the right treatment. Gastroenterology expert Nick Read says: “The increase in the incidence of IBS and regular bouts of diarrhea, cramps and bloating, particularly for those with stress-prone personalities, clearly demonstrate that the effects of stress for many women are commonly felt in the stomach. Desire for a View of the Sea And it seems we are keen to have our friends around as a large open plan kitchen/diner and living area, perfect for entertaining, is the most sought-after feature of our perfect home. The study, carried out as part of the AA’s investigation into the state of the nation’s homes, found that 18% of adults aspire to own a semi-detached house with two or three bedrooms, the most popular type of property. While semi-detached, two- or three-bedroom homes top the aspirational league;16% of homeowners still hanker after a detached, four- or five-bedroom house while 13% desire a detached, two- or three-bedroom abode. The most desired location is a rural village, which is top of the list for 28% of people, while 17% want to snuggle down in the suburbs and an upwardly-mobile two per cent are trying for a detached six-bedroom spread. Battle of the Sexes Half of adults long for mountain or countryside views, marginally more than would like to see the sea from their windows although plenty of us are keen on coastal locations with villages and seaside towns the perfect spot for 16% and 15% of homeowners. While men and women are well matched in their desired panorama, there could however be a battle between the sexes over the interior layout - and priorities. Twice as many men as women - 37% v 18% - would include a games room in their ultimate home and twice as many men than women want their own cinema. Somewhat predictably, more women opt for a large open plan kitchen, diner or living area, 64% compared with 56% of men, while 42% of women think a swimming pool would be a spectacular addition to their perfect family home. More men than women want their own personal gym - 27% compared with 23% of female fitness fans. While the view that females are the more nurturing sex is borne out by the fact that 29% of women want their dream home to have grounds for livestock, such as a chicken run, compared with just 22% of men. The research also indicates that in the long run, increased demand could see the price of rural properties rise significantly as 34% of people want to live in a rural location, yet these areas currently account for only 18% of the housing stock. We are used to drivers dreaming about owning cars most of us are never likely to afford, such as a Ferrari. However, when it comes to houses, the research shows that we are much more realistic and that for many of us, our dream home is likely to be within our reach.

THINK PINK Red and white wines are routinely served without question as an accompaniment to food. But although some wine snobs look down their noses at rosé, it makes the ideal accompaniment to light meals, poultry, seafood, and barbecues when it is well chilled. It is also delicious with spicy foods and curries. What's in a Name? Rosé wines can be referred to as a rosé, a pink wine, or a blush wine - whatever name you give them, they’re usually made from red grapes that are only allowed to ferment a few days, too short a time for the grape skins to impart a deeper color to the wine. It is interesting to speculate where the first rosé wine came from - probably Greece in ancient times. According to the myth, Amphictyon, son of Deucalion and Pyrrah, ordered the wine mixed with water at meetings of his counselors to dilute its strength and therefore cut down on drunkenness and quarrels. So, we can assume that it was then, mythologically speaking, that rosé was born. Where Does Rose Come From? Excellent rosé wines come from areas in Portugal, France, Spain, Canada, Australia, and the USA, where blush wine has gained a real foothold. Sutter Home White Zinfandel is produced from red zinfandel grapes grown in the Upper Sacramento and Northern San Joaquin valleys. This wine is a classic example of the style established by Bob Trinchero when he invented the varietal - which is delicate blush pink in color with sweet aromas of strawberries and watermelon – nearly 50 years ago. On the palate, the wine is fresh and lively and bursting with fruit. A light creaminess is evident, with a refreshing crisp finish. Delicious enjoyed well-chilled as an aperitif, White Zinfandel is the perfect partner to all types of foods, particularly those which have slight heat or spiciness such as Asian or Latin cuisine. Rose Grapes Back in the 1970s, before we all became sophisticated foodies, flask-shaped bottles of Mateus Rosé could be found in just about every middle class home and were often used after the wine was finished to act as a candle-holder. Rosé then gained a reputation for being unsophisticated and out-of-date, which has thankfully been shaken off. In the south of France they drink rosé by the tanker-load - wander past the bistros in trendy Cannes, St Tropez or Cassis and you’ll see what they drink with their bouillabaisse. Not white, not red, but pink. Rosés of some sort are produced in almost all wine-growing countries, the best of them from the grenache, pinot noir, cabernet franc, gamay and several Italian grape varieties. They should be served chilled and drunk young. Several excellent rosés are now being made in California, above all from the grenache grape. The best French come from Tavel, Marsannay, the Loire Valley, Beaujolais, northern Alsace, and Provence. Rose Champagne Rosé wines reach their peak as champagne. These beautiful crafted sparkling wines have that unique French signature which many connoisseurs reckon easily beats anything produced in America. Every champagne house of note makes a rosé - usually a non-vintage or vintage brut - and many also make a vintage brut rosé of the prestige cuvee class. It is the latter that are spectacular and spectacularly priced. But you can pick up a bottle of very acceptable and reasonably priced rosé wine off the supermarket or off-license shelf. Forget the old snobbery attached to thinking pink - you may be pleasantly surprised! 62

Some of the best toners out there are the ones that contain natural ingredients including herbs and essential oils like witch hazel, geranium, honey, lemon, ivy, sage, nettle, and burdock. FOR OILY SKIN Toners that contain witch hazel, juniper and lemongrass are great for oily skin. The only catch is that witch hazel, in particular, tends to dry the skin. So, it may be best to use moisturizers that contain hydrating agents like vitamin E and honey alongside your witch hazel toner. FOR NORMAL, DRY OR SENSITIVE SKIN Toners that have a rosewater base are great for normal or dry/sensitive skin. Rosewater helps to keep the face moisturized and fresh. It also balances the skin's pH levels. For drier skins, try toners that contain rose or sandalwood. HOW TO APPLY A TONER Simply spray the skin toner directly onto your face after a deep cleanse or apply it to a cotton ball and sweep it gently across your face using smooth, gentle upward strokes. Note that if you have cleansed your skin properly, the cotton wool should come out relatively clean when toning. Also, do not be tempted to use your toner as a skin cleanser. The important thing to remember is that you won't be doing a marathon on day one. The key to developing a running or jogging routine is to take a gradual step-by-step approach. When done correctly, running increases the density of your bones and can significantly improve your health and fitness. However, getting past the initial mental barrier of starting to run is arguably the most difficult part of the sport. Five Steps to Becoming a Jogger The key is to start off gently, then progress gradually and before you know it, you'll be running 10k without thinking. To help you get started, here is a simple guide aimed at complete beginners. So, what are you waiting for? Get those running shoes on and give it a go. Step One : You have to walk before you can run. Besides, if you can't walk a circuit of your local park without getting seriously out of breath, you're not going to be able to run round it. So, to get your fitness levels up, start walking for an amount of time that feels comfortable— anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. Step Two: Once you can walk for 30 minutes easily, sprinkle one to two-minute running intervals into your walks. As time goes on, make the running intervals longer and the time you spend walking shorter until you are running for 30 minutes straight. Step Three : The first goal is to set out a maximum time period or distance to cover. This should be something you can realistically do a few times a week— maybe in your lunch hour or in the time before or after work. Then build toward achieving that. Step Four: There’s no need to run or jog with pain. Instead, take a step back and examine what’s going wrong. Fitness experts say that when jogging, the perceived exertion should not go past 15 out of 20 where 5/20 is easy, 10/20 is comfortable, 15/20 is hard and 20/20 is collapse. Use this as a guide to know when to stop pushing yourself. Joggers are among the most stubborn of all sportsmen for ignoring aches and pains and causing more significant damage as a result. (StatePoint) High blood pressure -- the leading risk factor for heart attack and stroke -- continues to disproportionately affect communities of color. Addressing this health inequity is especially important right now, as people with hypertension and serious heart conditions are at an increased risk for more severe outcomes if they acquire COVID-19. According to the American Heart Association, the prevalence of high blood pressure among Black adults in the U.S. is among the highest in the world, with the prevalence of high blood pressure in Black women nearly 40 percent higher than white women in the U.S. While many long-standing inequities and stressors produced by structural racism have created and continue to exacerbate these conditions, there are steps individuals can take to help improve their blood pressure right now. The New Year is a great opportunity to prioritize self-care and get started. This is why the American Medical Association (AMA), the AMA Foundation, Association of Black Cardiologists, American Heart Association, Minority Health Institute and National Medical Association have launched the “Release the Pressure” campaign with ESSENCE. The campaign is aimed at partnering with Black women to help improve their heart health and be part of a movement for healthy blood pressure, with a shared goal of engaging more than 300,000 Black women.

For homeowners with a Freddie Mac loan, COVID19 mortgage assistance is available in the form of “forbearance,” which temporarily suspends or reduces your mortgage payment without penalty so you can get back on your feet. Here is how forbearance works and what happens when it ends: How do I request forbearance? To request forbearance, you must contact your loan servicer (the company listed on your mortgage statement) who will help you understand your options. Forbearance is available for up to a year, though servicers will typically start you on a shorter forbearance plan and reassess to see if your financial situation has changed. What happens when forbearance ends? It’s important to remember mortgage forbearance is not the same as mortgage forgiveness and you will have to repay your missed payments. About 30 days before the forbearance plan is scheduled to end, you and your servicer will determine next steps. This could include additional forbearance or a workout option to make up the missed payments. Just remember, you are never required to pay back missed payments in a lump sum if your loan is owned by Freddie Mac. How does repayment work? Even though you must pay back payments that were missed during forbearance, you have several options for doing so. Additionally, you won’t accrue additional fees, penalties or interest beyond the amounts already scheduled or calculated based on the terms of your mortgage. For example, let’s say you enter into a forbearance agreement of three months.
