Yahoo and many other media outlets covered the event of a lifetime when Juanita Hubbard, affectionately known as Mother Hubbard, met Denzel Washington at the front door of her house. Her story went viral and her beautiful face was on television, the internet, social media, newspapers and radio stations all over the world. Denzel Washington might be one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood, but that doesn't mean he'll pass up an opportunity to hang out with one of his biggest fans. “This really made my grandmother and family day. It's not to often you see a legend come through the hood and shoot the breeze.” Posted by Juanita M. Hubbard on Saturday, September 30, 2017. “The 62-year-old and his driver pulled over to ask a Chicago family for directions on Saturday when the group mentioned his biggest fan lived nearby,” People reports. “That's when the A-list celeb decided to pay a surprise visit on 86-year-old Juanita Hubbard.” "Mama Hubbard," who's lived in her South Side home for almost 50 years, was waiting on a Sears delivery when she saw the A-lister's car pull up. She'd been watching his 2002 flick John Q. on Friday night, but she doesn't have a favorite Denzel movie. "Everything he plays, every film he's in, that's my favorite," she later told the Chicago Sun-Times. "I never would have thought he would show up on my doorstep." Luckily, some nearby family members recorded the meeting on their phones and the footage couldn't be any cuter. The great-grandmother wouldn't stop beaming as Denzel shared stories of his childhood visits to Chicago and posed for pictures. Hubbard's granddaughter later posted the videos and photos to Facebook, where they soon went viral with over 40,000 shares and viewed over 4 million times. While Hubbard worried about feeling starstruck, she later told the Sun-Times that talking to her favorite star "was just like talking to one of my own sons." The best part of the whole thing, however, was her reaction at the end. After holding Denzel's hand for most of their encounter, Hubbard shared that she wasn't so ready to see him leave. "I'm not going to let him go!" she joked. You can find coverage of this event from multiple major media/press sources.

AMETRA: Introduce yourself to our readers. KURT: I'm Kurt Farquhar, television and film music composer for shows such as "Black Lightning" (CW), "The Neighborhood" (CBS), "American Soul: The Untold Story of Soul Train" (BET), "Games People Play" (BET), "The Kamiyah Mobley Story" (LIFETIME), "King of Queens" (CBS), "Sister Sister" (ABC), "Moesha" (UPN), "Girlfriends" (UPN), "The Game" (UPN/BET), "Soulfood" (SHOWTIME), "The Perfect Match" (Lionsgate), "Dark Girls" (OWN), "Ambitions" (OWN), and many, many more. AMETRA: Many of my favorites! When did you get your start as a Music Composer? KURT: Well, I've heard melodies in my head all my life. Even when I was a young child of 3 or 4...melodies swirled around in my head constantly. I wrote my first symphony when I was twelve years old. That said, I think what you're probably asking is... when did I start writing for television? That was 30 years ago this season. AMETRA: You are gifted. Who or what inspired you to become a Music Composer? KURT: My brother Ralph was a script writer for the TV show "Happy Days". He is the person who suggested that composing for TV would be a good fit for me. I don't know how he figured that, since (at the time) I didn't even watch TV, but he was right! I'm definitely where I should be! AMETRA: Did you attend college or have special training in your field? If not, how did you prepare yourself to become successful? KURT: I attended CVS high school in Chicago. At the time, they had a really strong music department, where you could major in music. They had a full band, choir, orchestra and jazz ensemble! I was in the orchestra. They allowed me to fill my days with music and write arrangements for the orchestra. Beyond that, I also went to a summer program at Berklee in Boston. When I graduated CVS, I went to the Conservatoire Nationale des Arte et Musique at Versaille France and finally to Eastern Illinois University, where I studied with noted percussion teacher Johnny Lee Lane. I always wrote and extensively studied music theory throughout my time in college, but I never studied composition for TV and film...or any other composition for that matter. AMETRA: Was the initial goal to become a Hollywood Music Composer working on major television productions? KURT: No. As I said earlier...I didn't even watch TV at that time. I practiced eight hours a day! Original goal was to tour and play with famous artists and maybe someday do an album of my own. AMETRA: How long did it take to get to mainstream? KURT: Still don't know if I'm there yet. Working on it! AMETRA: Who gave you your big break in Hollywood? KURT: I don't know that there was one single "Big Break" as much a series steps. I just put one foot in front of the other, put my head down and focused on the work. The work is the thing! Along the way there have been many amazing people who helped me on my journey. I love and thank them all! AMETRA: Are you a Music Composer exclusive to television? If not, do you compose music for film, plays and musicals? KURT: I do television and film, but mostly television. I love both areas. AMETRA: What was the first major production you worked as a Music Composer? KURT: "Livin’ Large", a pilot for FOX.

15

AMETRA: What would you consider the most challenging aspect of composing music? KURT: In television...it's the schedule. The schedule can be unforgiving! It's something you get used to though! AMETRA: I was amazed to discover you’re the Music Composer on a lot of my favorite TV shows. Do you have a favorite? If yes, what titles? KURT: My shows are like babies...I love them all! I've been blessed to work with a lot of brilliant and truly creative producers, writers and directors who have given me the most amazing opportunities. The opportunity to be a part of something special. I am so incredibly thankful to them all! AMETRA: Do you conduct workshops or have shadowing programs for those who may want to become a Music Composer? KURT: I have spoken at film festivals, schools and churches. Anywhere that wants me and yes, I do mentor as much as I can, I especially like showing minorities and women that...You BELONG here too! Maybe seeing me will inspire one of them to take the chance on them self. Inside their head and their heart is where the real "Big Break" is found! AMETRA: Have you been nominated and/or won any awards and/or honors? KURT: I am a seven time BMI Award winner for "The King of Queens", "The Game" and "Being Mary Jane". I've also received the LA Confidential Impact Award for my work on "American Soul: The Untold Story of Soul Train" AMETRA: Do you have any advice for someone who may be reading about you and wants to become a Hollywood Music Composer? KURT: Belief in yourself and an unwavering, relentless work ethic will be needed. Your patience will be needed. Your family will be needed. Your tears will be needed. Your love of the game will be needed. Your understanding will be needed. Your preparedness will be needed. Your fearlessness will be needed. Your creativity will be needed. Your joy will be needed. Your life experiences will be needed. You and all your mixed up, sometimes crazy, always complicated mish mosh of thoughts will be needed. You with the good and the bad...with all you imperfections will be needed. Because you will be tested! Like Neo in The Matrix...You have to know that You can do this! Welcome to Hollywood! Now get to work! AMETRA: If a Producer or Production Company wants to hire you to compose music for their next production, what are the steps to take? KURT: Call me or email me or my agents at Gorfaine Schwartz. AMETRA: How may our readers support you online ie website, social media links? KURT: @Farquharkurt on Instagram kurt farquhar Facebook Kurtfarquhar Twitter AMETRA: I want to thank you, Kurt, for sharing your journey with Infini Magazine. Check out Kurt’s General Reel below. I look forward to that album you mentioned. Best wishes & much success! GENERAL REEL: https://soundcloud.com/kurtfarquhar/sets/2019-general-reel

Last year I started at the bottom of the terrain. I started scared, alone, and broke. I couldn't see the light. All I had was hope. I knew that I had way more love to share with the world. Now in 2020...the terrain looks totally different. Im up higher. I've manifested happiness and health in my life. I've manifested a tribe that supports me and inspires me to keep pushing. I can see the light, the challenges, the opportunities, and the bottom. Truthfully it looks even scarier up here! Plus I have the opportunity to stop right here or turn around and go back. It's still a lonely place cause you have to focus to climb. I've decided to keep going. My purpose is to lead by example. I don't get to stop. Too many Souls need to know that they can climb out of the pit to bigger, better, and greater. The climb is steep y'all, but you got this! For those who need it...do it scared, do it alone, and do it for the people that are rooting for you! You got this!
