Shorter Darker Days Are Ahead: Make Your Home a Haven

(StatePoint) As more of life is centered around home, good design can help you augment and replace natural light, while creating a beautiful, productive, safe haven during the darker, shorter days of fall and winter. “As the home continues to serve as our collective sanctuary during the COVID pandemic, it’s critical to consider how lighting can keep a family thriving during this fall and winter season,” says Michael McCullough, director of PR at Progress Lighting. Fall has arrived, and with it, a new reality. The days are naturally growing shorter and darker. Daylight Saving Time expires November 1, ushering in the long winter nights and colder temperatures. This means more time spent inside working, learning and just plain living in our homes. “The stress of the COVID-19 crisis has emphasized the impact our environment plays on our wellbeing. There’s never been a more important time for interior design,” says Doris Pearlman, founder of Possibilities for Design of Denver. “Our goal is to create spaces that uplift and embrace, providing respite from daily pressures.” Pearlman’s team offers three design suggestions: • Add lighting above work areas to create functional, operational spaces. • Complement ambient lighting with pendant lighting around kitchen islands to facilitate collaboration. • Create inspiration by clustering pendants for a fun, unique centerpiece. • Hang pendants over nightstands to turn the bedroom into a retreat. Individual switches allow for customized lighting for easy bedtime reading. 4

Jayme and Nolan Fridley, of Fridley Homes in Oregon, who balance a busy custom home building business with their active family, are observing new trends. “The open-concept floor plan is not as charming when everyone’s working from home,” says Jayme Fridley. “Instead of a ‘great room,’ many families now think that having many areas designated for specific tasks is ‘great’.” Fridley’s strategies include: • Create specific learning areas for each child. • Let kids customize spaces, keeping clutter minimized to avoid distractions. • Encourage concentration with good (if possible natural) lighting. Design pros suggest homeowners incorporate light layering to maximize light throughout the day. Supplement daylight with overhead lighting from chandeliers, recessed and close-to-ceiling fixtures. Place task lighting such as pendants or desk lamps over work areas. Use accent lighting like wall sconces to add a soft glow as the day wanes. “Lighting should set the tone for productivity. For some, this might mean bright lighting and multiple sources. Others might prefer a moody vibe. Making it your own is what’s most important...oh, and a good backdrop for Zoom calls sure won’t hurt,” says Julie Wynalda, owner of True Vine Creations in Hudsonville, Mich. Instagram influencer Heather, of Operation Tudor Revival, who’s DIY-ing her home renovation says, “Office lighting can be both functional and fabulous! I went with an overhead chandelier with a drum shade for an updated look. The shade also helps diffuse light to avoid glare on my computer screen.” Technology can help spaces pull double-duty. Lifestyle blogger, Lindsey Dalton says, “We put our chandelier on a dimmer so it can be bright while my husband’s working but we can turn it down during dinner to transition the room from workday to relaxing evening.” With smart light fixtures, you can change lighting tone, brightness and color with a device or your voice. Control products from iDevices work with the three most popular voice assistants: Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri. Using the iDevices smart Dimmer Switch and Wall Switch, you can set lights on dynamic schedules and automations based on triggers like your local sunrise or presence at home. Delineating start and stop times to your day through lighting can help optimize productivity and boost your mood. Smart controls can also facilitate distance-learning. “With a voice assistant built inside the Instinct smart light switch, you have your own at-home teaching assistant, helping answer questions and assisting with exercises,” says Andrew Ragali, senior marketing manager for iDevices. “It also allows you to play music or audiobooks using voice commands to keep kids on task.” For more tips and to shop products, visit Progress Lighting. Your home environment impacts your family’s health and wellbeing. Well-lit, comfortable spaces can help your household thrive in the months ahead.

3 ways to break out of your echo chamber this election season

(BPT) - At a time when the nation is more divided than ever over politics, race and whether to wear a face mask, the opinion of one side is often not just opposed to that of the other side but incomprehensible. Living in separate digital spheres as well as different areas of the country, the two halves of America were "socially distant" even before the pandemic. Trying to understand our fellow citizens is critical as we approach the presidential election - not to mention the Thanksgiving dinner table - and yet, it feels harder now than ever before. But while the path toward greater division sometimes seems like a one-way street, there are actually many ways to bridge the gap of understanding. "Curiosity is no longer an option, it's required to understand the new world we are living in," says Emmy-winning journalist and OZY Media co-founder and CEO Carlos Watson, host of The Carlos Watson Show, a new show on YouTube that aims to heal America's wounds by presenting a series of meaningful conversations with diverse, influential guests. With more than 10 million views since its August debut, Watson's Anderson Cooper-meetsOprah style of conversation clearly resonates with an audience that craves insightful, impactful and surprising conversations on everything from Black Lives Matter to love, with public figures who might not normally show up in their social media news feeds - from Sean Spicer and Baker Mayfield to George Lopez, Malcolm Gladwell and Tina Knowles-Lawson. 6

Here are some tips, curated by Watson, for how to break out of your bubble, just as he has facilitated at his own virtual coffee table. 1. Listen to others from across the aisle This sounds like an obvious place to start, but in many ways it is the hardest step. Not just giving airtime but actively listening to opposing viewpoints is rarely practiced by TV talking heads. One good place to start is by following several people on social media with whom you disagree and seeking out interviews online - not for hot takes on the news of the day, but for in-depth profiles of their lives and careers. While fiery debates are what often trend online, YouTube's hidden gem is the respectful exchange of differing opinions - and they too can rack up view counts. "This is genuinely the first time I have seen two opposing sides having such a respect for each other in the political realm," comments Taylor Whiteside on an episode of The Carlos Watson Show in which Watson and actor Terry Crews debate the latter's controversial "Black supremacy" tweets. "This is what true discussions should look like," continues Whiteside in his comment on the most-viewed episode of the show so far, with 1.3 million views. 2. Seek out deep, meaningful conversations In 2020, we might have forgotten what it means to have a heart-to-heart with a friend over a bottle of wine, but those long-form discussions are still very much possible through a computer screen. Don't be afraid to talk about difficult issues like race and to openly advocate for change. But this doesn't mean just talking politics - the broader conversations you can have, the better. Instead of searching for the "gotcha" moment, find ways to learn the backstory behind someone's belief system. 3. Make the difficult choice to diversify your life Look around. Your church, your kids' school, your group of friends, your barbershop and your gym are probably all full of people who look like you and think like you. Start by diversifying your media consumption - check out OZY's 30-Day Justice Plan for some useful suggestions. To take the next step, would you send your kids to a more integrated school? Would you change employers for the opportunity to have co-workers who hold different opinions from yours? Would you bring your family to a new place of worship if it meant more fully integrating your social world? Building relationships that cross traditional social lines - whether in race, politics, age or place of origin - is the first step toward understanding, empathy and, ultimately, a sense of shared fate that will demand real change. Start your bubble-bursting journey by tuning into episodes of The Carlos Watson Show, every day on YouTube.

Navigating a new normal: Health and safety tips for kids in sports

(BPT) - This year when it comes to youth sports, seasons have shifted, practices may look different and competitions may be postponed, all of which have been difficult for kids who simply want to enjoy their time on and off the field, court, rink, mat or pool deck. As parents navigate this new normal for their kids in sports, it's more important than ever to support their kids' athletic pursuits while also keeping safety in mind. "In addition to performance, right now safety in youth sports is so important," says author and sports nutrition expert Leslie Bonci, nutrition consultant for the Kansas City Chiefs. "Parents want their children to thrive in athletics - whatever that might look like this year - but also want to keep their health and safety in mind, so it's important to take some proactive steps." To help guide parents, Bonci shares her top tips for maintaining a safe and healthy lifestyle for your child no matter their athletic interest: Prioritize safety steps at home and away As kids come together in youth sports settings, health and safety are of the utmost importance. Remind them to always wash hands with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds after using the restroom, blowing their nose, coughing or sneezing. They should also avoid touching their eyes, nose 8

and mouth with unwashed hands. In sports settings, discourage sharing bottles, clean and sanitize them daily with water and liquid household chlorine bleach and eliminate any bulk food or beverages during practice and games, using individually packaged items instead. When they get home from practice, get them in the habit of washing hands again before settling in. Stay hydrated to fuel the body and focus the mind Proper hydration is important both on and off the field of play. Rethink their drink and increase electrolyte intake with drinks such as Gatorade Juiced, a juice-based sports drink with a blend of fruit juices and electrolytes for hydration before, during and after physical exertion. It's the only juicebased sports drink made with no added sugar, no artificial sweeteners or flavors, no colors from artificial sources and adequate electrolytes, as recommended by the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, to help replace what athletes lose in sweat. Create balanced plates and customized meals A well-balanced diet is essential for growing athletes to maintain proper growth and optimize performance in athletic endeavors. Create a great plate by personalizing your child's meals based on their individual needs and strategizing to ensure the quality and quantity of their food intake. An ideal diet comprises 45% to 65% carbohydrates, 10% to 30% protein and 25% to 35% fat. For example, brown rice topped with baked chicken breast and a side of roasted carrots would be a wholesome meal. A good dessert could be a vanilla yogurt parfait with berries and granola. Promote smart snack and drink choices Stock your fridge and pantry with wholesome choices for growing bodies so kids make smart choices even when you're not around. Cheese sticks and nut butters are excellent protein sources. Wholegrain crackers can provide a high-quality carbohydrate. Nuts and trail mixes are easy on-the-go options that satisfy hungry bellies. Fluids, like Gatorade Juiced, are very important for maintaining hydration and should be consumed before, during and after athletic events to help kids stay properly hydrated. Stock individual bottles and packages of snacks for easy access and to discourage sharing which can cause cross-contamination. "Things are certainly different now in youth sports, but that doesn't mean kids can't continue to do the things they love in mindful ways," says Bonci. "A few smart steps to support wellness can help your young athlete be the best no matter the environment."

4 ways you can help support veterans

(BPT) - According to the National Institutes of Health, up to 30% of American military veterans experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after returning home from combat. Yet only about 40% of those individuals ever seek help. Service dogs are proving to help military veterans suffering from PTSD and other post-combat challenges in ways that no other therapy can. Unfortunately, due to the cost and time it takes to train a service dog, less than 1% of those in need can obtain one. Dog Chow is on a mission to help change that with its Service Dog Salute campaign, which supports the care and training of more service dogs for America's military veterans. If you're looking for ways to support veterans in your community and across the country, here are four ways you can help. 1. Get informed. Receiving a service dog can be life-changing for veterans. More than just companions, psychiatric service dogs are specially trained to help veterans live an improved quality of life. They can help ease stress and soothe anxiety through specific tasks like interrupting night terrors, calming panic attacks, reminding a veteran to take medication, providing security and more. 11

In fact, veterans who utilize service dogs report lower levels of depression and anxiety, fewer hospitalizations and a reduction in medical and psychiatric costs, among other benefits. This is particularly beneficial for those who struggle with PTSD. Contrary to what many believe, PTSD service dogs are not the same as emotional support, therapy or companion dogs. Like service dogs for the blind, deaf and physically disabled, PTSD service dogs for veterans must be specifically trained to help their handler perform tasks they cannot otherwise perform on their own. 2. Buy a bag of Purina Dog Chow Through its Service Dog Salute program, Purina Dog Chow is supporting the care and training of more service dogs for veterans, so that every military hero in need can find a canine hero of their own. From Sept. 1, 2020, through Thanksgiving (Nov. 26, 2020), for every purchase of a specially marked bag of Purina Dog Chow, Purina will make a donation to its two partnering service dog organizations (up to a total of $100,000). The donations will be split equally between the Pets & Vets program at Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation and Got Your Six Support Dogs. Over the last three years, Purina Dog Chow has donated over $700,000 to support the training of service dogs for military veterans. If you or a veteran you know could benefit from a service dog, or to learn more, visit DogChow.com/service. 3. Support veteran service dog organizations It takes on average between one and two and a half years and $25,000 to train and place one service dog. These costs include specialized training, food, veterinarian services, veteran therapy expenses and more. Especially now, as fundraisers and other events continue to be cancelled, non-profit organizations that serve our nation's veterans need help more than ever. Donating directly to your local nonprofits will help them continue their missions to help these men and women regain their lives through the healing power of dogs. 4. Support legislation Men and women returning from service suffer from invisible as well as physical wounds. Congress can give veterans the opportunity to utilize the treatments that work best for them. The PAWS for Veterans Therapy Act (HR4305) will create a pilot program in the VA to give veterans access to treatment derived from working with service dogs. The bill would change the existing Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) policy to recognize service dogs as a treatment option for PTSD, as well as create a program within the VA allowing veterans to train service dogs for their personal use or for other veterans facing physical disabilities. The bill has been approved by the House, but still awaits passage in the Senate. To support this legislation, visit dogchow.com/service to send an email to your state senators urging them to pass the bill. 12

Budget-friendly tips for a safe and joyous holiday 2020

(BPT) - Uncertainty continues into the 2020 holiday season, with limited travel, canceled events and strict budgets changing how Americans will celebrate this year. According to a recent Coinstar Holiday Survey, the majority of Americans said COVID-19 will influence how they celebrate the holidays. Fortunately, by thinking outside the box and keeping a positive attitude, you can stay healthy, stretch funds and create merry moments. Let these tips inspire you to celebrate the holiday season safely and on budget: Maintain traditions in new, safe ways Traditions bring comfort and hope, so rather than forgoing beloved activities due to coronavirus concerns, get creative instead. Plan a car caravan to look at holiday lights and have everyone keep a scorecard of favorite houses including winners for most creative, brightest, funniest and overall best. Set up a video chat and bake favorite holiday treats in real time from afar. Relatives can virtually tuck kids into bed by reading classic holiday books through a free digital video platform. These activities are safer to enjoy and will create meaningful memories to make the season special.

Make gifts to save money You can still have a wonderful holiday even on a tight budget. A budget-friendly option is to make it a homemade holiday this year. Face masks and hand sanitizer are great stocking stuffers that you can make and will be appreciated, especially this year. Patterns are readily available to make face masks and you can find recipes online for creating custom hand sanitizer. Another idea is to choose all handmade gifts from Etsy or local artists in your area, so you can give unique presents while supporting small businesses. Cash in spare change Even with fewer in-person gatherings and reduced gift giving this season, most people have increased expenses during the holiday season. Cashing in spare change is a good way to stretch your budget. Research shows Americans with spare change at home estimate that they have on average $113 in and around their homes. These funds can be used to buy gifts or apply to other holiday expenses. Coinstar kiosks found at most grocery stores are an easy way to convert loose change for cash, a no-fee eGift card or tax-deductible charity donation. Plan a virtual gift exchange According to the Coinstar Holiday Survey, two in five Americans who say their holiday will be different due to COVID-19 say they do not plan to travel or attend in-person gatherings. To enjoy the holidays safely, consider a virtual gift exchange with friends or family. Drop off or mail gifts and plan a time for everyone to video chat and open presents together. Get dressed in your favorite holiday attire to make the event feel special, whether that's festive formal wear or ugly sweaters and sweats. Then, take turns opening gifts and feel the joy. Give gifts with meaning Rather than a traditional present, consider alternative gifts that show you care. Do you have a talent that would benefit others, such as tutoring a friend's child who is studying remotely? Could you drop off a meal for a senior who's homebound? Could you donate a snack basket for hard-working delivery personnel? Lastly, instead of a present, you could make a donation in the recipient's name to a charity close to that person's heart. Delay holiday celebrations All of these ideas can help you maximize the holiday season, but if you still long to celebrate in person, consider planning a gathering for later in 2021. According the survey, about half said they would consider "Christmas in July" in 2021 for in-person celebrations. So, whether it's a summer Christmas event, an early Friendsgiving or another winter holiday, it's something to look forward to once it's safe again. Send out "save the date" invitations and put your creative juices to work for a summer get-together.

4 ways to make holiday shopping a breeze this year

(BPT) - This year more than ever, we're all ready to kick back and enjoy a relaxing holiday season. Shopping online is a great way to get your shopping done safely and conveniently this year - in fact, the majority (59 percent) of holiday shoppers plan to shift more of their shopping online compared with last year, according to the National Retail Federation's annual consumer holiday survey. Whether you love the thrill of holiday shopping or are usually more of a gifting procrastinator, here are a few simple strategies you can apply to your online shopping that will have you checking holiday errands off your list in no time, leaving you more time to celebrate with family and friends this year. 1. Make a list (and check it twice) First, make a list of those people in your life that you want to delight with a special gift this year. Next, create a workable budget for your gift shopping as a whole, then break down that budget per person, deciding who you might want to splurge a little more on this year, versus those that might be just as happy with something simpler. That way you'll know what you can afford before your list gets away from you. 15

2. Start early No need to wait until Black Friday this year to score incredible deals on everything you need this season. Beat the holiday rush by taking advantage of early savings and deals, so you can stress less and get on to enjoying the season. Amazon is kicking off the holiday shopping season earlier than ever with its Holiday Dash deals event, bringing Black Friday deals and discounts to all customers earlier than ever. Start snatching up deals now at www.Amazon.com/holidaydash, on the Amazon App, or by simply asking "Alexa, what are my deals?" With new deals dropping every day, you can shop with confidence that you're getting Black Friday-worthy deals and incredible savings on a huge selection of products, making it easy to check everyone off the gift list earlier than ever. Best of all, online shopping means everything is delivered quickly and safely - helping you save even more time and money by not having to visit multiple stores. 3. Let gift guides do the work for you Need gifting inspiration? If you've got your list and budget together but are stuck on a few ideas, gift guides are the perfect place to start. Amazon's holiday gift guides are easily sorted by things like price, age and areas of interest, so you can find something for everyone on your list, no matter the budget - just go to amazon.com/gifts. Still stumped? Let Alexa do the work for you by asking things like "Alexa, give me gift ideas under $50," for more gifting inspiration within your budget. 4. Get more for your dollar with easy saving hacks For many, budgets are tighter than ever this year - in fact, a recent survey conducted by Accenture showed that nearly 1 in 4 are cutting holiday spending because of a tough year - making it more important than ever to get more for your holiday dollar. Luckily, in addition to scouting out early holiday deals there are some easy ways to get the best bang for your buck throughout the whole season. Check out Amazon Coupons for special offers that are updated frequently on thousands of products - all without the hassle of clipping, and set up the Amazon Assistant to easily monitor and compare prices on all the products you want, so you can be sure you are getting the best deals on all the best gifts. Or check out some of Amazon's lesser known options, like Amazon's Renewed Deals, where you can discover professionally inspected pre-owned, refurbished and open-box products. Follow these tips and you'll feel more prepared than ever going into the holiday season!

Pros and cons of using credit cards today

(BPT) - One of the many changes spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic is a fundamental shift in how people are paying for the goods and services they need. Due to both health and safety concerns, consumers and retailers are more frequently choosing credit cards for online and in-person payments in an effort to make transactions as contactless as possible. Moreover, the pandemic has caused a national coin shortage, causing retailers to prefer and, at times, even require the use of a card instead of cash. If you've avoided using credit cards or feel worried about overusing them, now is an opportunity to rethink your spending strategy. If used smartly, they can be considered one of many effective tools to help you manage your money better. Here are some pros and cons of using credit cards instead of cash and tips for avoiding the pitfalls from the experts at Navy Federal Credit Union. Pros: Boost your credit. Using your credit cards on a regular basis may be a great way to improve your credit score. Not maxing out cards and paying your bills on time shows lenders that you can borrow responsibly, which can help you get better interest rates when you need to make big purchases such as a car or home. Earn rewards. Many credit cards offer rewards on everyday purchases like groceries, gas, and takeout. Some cards also offer a sign-up bonus, such as $150, when you spend $2,000 in the first three 17

months, even on purchases you were already planning to make. This is an easy way to earn rewards and let your regular purchases add up in your favor. According to Justin Zeidman, head of credit card products at Navy Federal, "the best credit cards give you flexibility both in the way you earn and in the way you redeem." Find a card that offers either extra cashback or rewards points on everyday purchases like groceries, restaurants and gas. Track your spending. If you're trying to stick to a budget, it's easy to track purchases made with a credit card, especially using mobile apps that update your purchases in real time. If you've ever lost track of cash in your purse or wallet, not remembering what you spent it on, a credit card can help you solve this problem and better understand your spending habits, by telling you exactly where your money's going. Better protection. You have complete protection if your card is ever lost or stolen. Not only that, but credit cards offer protection against fraud if someone uses your number for an unauthorized purchase. Some cards also offer safeguards against buying damaged or faulty products. "If you think your card is lost or stolen, report it to your financial institution immediately," said Zeidman. "When you're on the phone with your issuer, explain to them the full extent of your situation. They'll walk you through next steps such as filing a claim to dispute any unauthorized transactions." Cons: Missing payments. If you're not good at remembering deadlines, it can hurt you. Missing or late credit card payments can have a negative impact on your credit score. The solution: "One of the easiest ways to stay on top of your credit card payment is to set up automatic payments," says Zeidman. "Set it and forget it," he added. If you can, pay the full amount each month, or at least more than the minimum amount, to minimize interest accumulating. Finally, during a time when health and safety are paramount, in addition to convenience and value, credit cards with contactless capabilities can offer consumers more safety and peace of mind. When used responsibly, not only can they help you to boost your credit and earn rewards, cards with contactless technology allow you to make everyday purchases without having to fumble with card systems other people have been touching. While the increase in contactless payments among American consumers has been slower compared to other parts of the world, COVID-19 has accelerated credit card usage in the U.S., and that's a trend expected to continue after the pandemic has subsided. COVID-19 has resulted in many changes, and as Americans reevaluate their finances in economically uncertain times, they should be sure to look in their wallets and understand how they pay for everyday purchases. As everyone's situation is unique, make sure to carefully weigh the pros and cons of any big financial decisions. That said, there is a great opportunity for many Americans to make sure their credit cards are working for them, their rewards are maximized, and they're staying safe. 18

How to do laundry during COVID-19: Do's and dont's

(BPT) - Good laundry practices in the home are more important than ever. Recommendations from the North American Cleaning and Sanitization Expert Panel, which recently convened in a workshop hosted by the University of Arizona, offer guidelines to help reduce the spread of infections and illness when it comes to laundry practices in your home. These methods can give you better peace of mind, knowing that you're doing all you can to help reduce the spread of viruses that cause COVID19, the flu and colds. Here are some easy-to-follow do's and don'ts for laundry best practices in your home: DO use a deeper-cleaning, high-quality laundry detergent that removes deeply embedded soils and germs. According to one of the experts on the panel, microbiologist and University of Arizona professor Dr. Charles P. Gerba, regular good laundry practices, combined with the use of a deeper-cleaning, highquality detergent and precautions like washing your hands after handling soiled or wet laundry is enough to reduce the spread of respiratory viruses. "Viruses that cause colds, flu and COVID-19 are very sensitive to the surfactants found in deepercleaning, high-quality laundry detergents," said Dr. Gerba. "Combined with the regular laundry 19

process and special handling precautions including hand washing, deeper-cleaning detergents can provide better protection for you and your family versus the use of lighter cleaning detergents." DO always wash or sanitize hands after handling soiled laundry and transferring wet laundry from washer to dryer, even in healthy households. DO use special precautions if COVID-19, the flu, or a cold is suspected or confirmed. Wear disposable gloves if possible when handling dirty laundry (clothes and linens) from a person who is sick. Dirty laundry from a person who is sick can be washed with other people's items. Do not shake dirty laundry. Clean and disinfect clothes hampers, appliance and other surfaces that contact soiled laundry. Remove gloves, and wash or sanitize hands right away. Wash or sanitize hands again after transferring wet laundry from washer to dryer. DO frequently wash clothing and other items such as bath towels, hand towels and kitchen towels. Bedsheets and especially pillowcases also require frequent laundering. DO use the highest temperature clothes washer setting you can safely use, according to the care instructions for the items being laundered if a respiratory illness such as COVID-19, the flu or a cold is suspected or confirmed. Healthy households can wash clothes in cold water. DO regularly clean and disinfect your home's clothes hampers, appliances or other surfaces that come into contact with soiled laundry. DON'T use a laundry sanitizer for everyday cleaning. Laundry sanitizers are an added extra step needed during specific illnesses, such as the stomach flu, and are not needed to protect you and your family against the viruses that cause colds, the flu, and COVID-19. In special situations where a laundry sanitizer is recommended for use, it should always be used after washing with a deepercleaning laundry detergent. DON'T wait to wash soiled clothes or bedding of an ill family member - wash those items as soon as possible to avoid spreading infection in your household. DON'T wash bedding or clothes from a family member who is ill with an enteric virus (stomach bug, vomiting and diarrhea), has a weakened immune system, or work clothes contaminated by germs from sick people or animals together with laundry from other members of the household. Keeping that laundry separate can help prevent viruses or bacteria from spreading to others. Wash in hot water, using a deeper-cleaning laundry detergent plus a registered sanitizer and/or sanitizing cycle on the washing machine. Dry in a dryer on high heat. Wearing disposable gloves when handling soiled laundry from an ill household member can provide an extra layer of protection. Following these laundry practices can help ensure your family will be less likely to spread bacteria or viruses, says Dr. Gerba, helping to reduce the risk of illness for everyone in your home. Learn more about good laundry and cleaning practices as recommended by the North American Cleaning and Sanitization Expert Panel by visiting News.Arizona.edu/story/dirt-laundry-and-howreduce-your-risk-getting-sick. 20

A Skin Care Expert Weighs in: Take Care of Your Scalp

(StatePoint) When it comes to your skin and hair care routine, it can be all too easy to forget the scalp. After time though, this neglect can take a toll on the health of your hair, according to experts. “Think of your scalp as an extension of your skin from your face. If you put too much product on your face, your skin cannot breathe. The same is true for the scalp and hair follicles. Taking proper care of your scalp is important in preventing follicles from clogging and also avoids hair getting weighed down from too much product buildup,” says Dr. Rocio Rivera, Ph.D. The Problem Scalp buildup is caused by a number of factors, many of which are unfortunately beyond your control or simply caused by your everyday routine. These include environmental factors, dead skin cells that don’t shed quickly enough, sweat, sebum and hair care products. Over time, scalp buildup can cause issues like itching, shedding and clogged follicles, ultimately compromising healthy hair growth and your comfort.

21

The Solution While you’re not about to ditch your sweat session or your favorite hair care products, that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to live with scalp buildup. One important thing to consider is the frequency you shampoo your hair. While the right frequency will vary per head of hair, you can experiment until you strike the right balance for you. Be sure to always rinse shampoo out of your hair thoroughly with cool water during each wash. You may also want to incorporate a detox solution into your routine in order to deeply purify and cleanse the scalp of dirt, product buildup and oil, without stripping hair. To do so, consider new solutions like the EverPure Scalp Care + Detox system from L’Oréal Paris, which is recommended for twice a week use. Containing menthol and neem leaf extract, it leaves the scalp feeling fresh for 24 hours, and leaves hair healthy-looking, bouncy and soft. If you have colortreated hair, this can be an especially worthy option to consider, as this sulfate-free, paraben-free solution is color safe. “A sulfate-free shampoo is a great option to prevent scalp discomfort. The new system from L’Oréal Paris is quite effective and affordable. The products cleanse and relieve the scalp of excess dirt, product buildup, flakes and oils without stripping the hair. Plus, it’s been validated by hair colorists, so it is safe on your color-treated hair too,” says Dr. Rivera. Finally, for ultimate scalp and hair health, try adopting a diet that includes nutrients like omega 3 fatty acids and biotin. Don’t let life take its toll on your scalp. By counteracting the effects of buildup, you can help restore the health of your scalp and locks.

4 Simple Tips for a Safe and Healthy Holiday Season

(BPT) - Traditionally, the holiday season is a time to gather with family and friends to reminiscence and celebrate all that has happened throughout the year. But with an ongoing pandemic, many are left looking for new and unique ways to enjoy those time-honored traditions in a way that keeps everyone safe and healthy. So while things will likely look different than we are accustomed to, that doesn’t mean you and your loved ones have to miss out on those most important and cherished traditions. Instead, consider trying these tips and tricks for safe, socially distant holiday fun.

24

Host safely If you plan to host, there are a number of precautions you can take to keep guests safe. If possible, take your gatherings outside where you can increase physical distance and airflow. Choose outdoor activities, such as a bonfire or an active game. If you live in a colder climate, bring out the hats, coats and gloves -and try using a patio or porch heater to warm up. To limit travel, it is best to only invite people from your local area and limit the number of attendees. Provide information to guests about your local safety guidelines and take steps to prevent spread by providing masks and hand sanitizer. Food prices: Why they're rising and how to save

(BPT) - The COVID-19 pandemic has affected food prices more than nearly any other part of the household budget. In April, the Food-at-Home Consumer Price Index increased 2.7%, which was the largest monthly jump since 1974. From June 2019 to June 2020, food prices are up 5.6%. Why is this happening, and furthermore, how can you save on your family's grocery bills? The food supply chain and price fluctuations The food supply chain is made up of three parts: production, processing, and retail. As food items move down the supply chain, value is added to the product. * Production incudes the farms and ranches that grow the food. * Processing entails the manufacturers that turn food from the farm into consumer-ready options such as corn flakes or orange juice. * Retail includes the stores where shoppers purchase different food items. There are several factors that regularly influence food prices such as weather, farming production, growth in the population and trade. Sometimes there are shocks to the food supply chain that have big influences on prices, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 factors' influence on food prices As communities quickly responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, every stage of the food supply chain saw costs increase. There are four key trends that are influencing food costs: Shift to eating at home: In a matter of two months, approximately $23 billion in consumer spending away from home was redirected toward grocery stores as restaurants were forced to close due to COVID-19, according to FMI - The Food Industry Association.

27

Loss of foodservice demand: When restaurants closed, farmers and ranchers lost a key channel for their product. With fewer buyers, it is costly or impractical to harvest, preserve or store some food and beverage products. Increasing production and processing costs: During COVID-19, companies have made investments and adjustments to safeguard their products and employees. This means costs for food production are higher. Some manufacturers have been able to innovate and find new markets for their products, but these changes often entail added costs. Increasing operating costs for grocery stores: Compared to 2019, supermarket operating costs were up 7.9% in April 2020 and 6.7% in May 2020, according to USDA Economic Research Service. Grocery stores have remained open during the pandemic and have had to quickly adjust to new regulations, safety and sanitation practices and enhanced customer education - all requiring resources. In addition, some areas of the grocery store, including salad bars and hot bars, have had to shut down, meaning a loss of revenue. For additional information, visit www.FMI.org/FoodPrices101. How you can save money at the grocery store The experts at FMI - The Food Industry Association predict food prices may remain high for a while but stress the food supply chain is resilient and is likely to normalize over time. Regardless, there are ways shoppers can save money while at the store: Plan ahead: Planning meals and snacks for the week before heading to the grocery store helps ensure you only purchase what you need. Use a shopping list or app to help stay organized. Check your store's circular, website or app for coupons and specials ahead of time. Compare options: Consider purchasing store brands, usually priced less and with equal taste and nutrition. When possible, purchase bulk protein options for freezing extras. Compare unit prices of different brands and package sizes to save. The "unit price" is the price per ounce, pound or pint, and is typically listed on the shelf tag. Canned or frozen food options can have an extended shelf-life and help stretch your dollar. Seek out assistance programs: The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants & Children nutrition program, or WIC, help families during times of need. Visit FeedingAssistance.com for more information on these federal programs and eligibility.

5 tips for online grocery shopping success

(BPT) - Online grocery shopping is on the rise, and the options are plentiful - from having a shopper deliver goods at your door to curbside pickup and more. But even the most experienced grocery shoppers may find they need to learn some new tricks to achieve online grocery shopping success. Tip #1: Find the delivery method that best suits your needs Need lots of fresh produce delivered right away? Look for a service that gives your list to a personal shopper to take through a local store and deliver at your doorstep. If you're looking to stock up on pantry staples, a service that ships from a warehouse is a great way to get what you need without having to step foot inside a store. Many stores are also offering curbside pickup, where you pick out your items online, check out and drive to the store to have your order placed directly into your trunk. Tip #2: Be an eco-friendly online shopper There are plenty of opportunities to keep sustainability in mind while online grocery shopping. Packages that weigh less will translate to reduced carbon emissions during shipping. For example, carton packages are about 60% lighter than cans, and they are made mainly from renewable materials. Even pet food can be found in cartons. Keep in mind that many of your chilled favorites, such as milk or plant-based dairy alternatives, may also be available in shelf-stable cartons. This means the product doesn't need to be chilled during shipping, eliminating the need to pack items on ice. No matter how long shipping takes, or how long the box remains on the doorstep, your items will arrive safe to eat and with the quality you expect.

29

Tip #3: Plan ahead Take advantage of the ability to assemble your grocery cart at home by assessing any long-term needs for staple items, like pasta, broths and beans. If you're short on food storage space, look for foods packaged in square shapes. Stackable, shelf-stable cartons help make the most of every inch. Many canned goods now come in carton packages too. Tip #4: Give specific instructions to your shopper It's sad but true: Sometimes your favorite items will be out of stock. If you're using a personal shopping service, make sure to include notes for preferred replacement items, especially if there's another brand or flavor you'd like if your first choice is unavailable. You can even note how green you'd like your bananas or how ripe your ideal avocado may be. Tip #5: Pay attention to packaging Food packaging is designed to protect its contents - keeping the food safe and flavorful while preserving its nutrients. As you shop online, look for packaging that protects the planet once it has served its purpose. Many types of food and beverage packages can be recycled and turned into new materials. For example, cartons can be turned into paper products, such as tissues and paper towels, and even sustainable building materials!

Online grocery shopping might require you to approach shopping a bit differently, but with a little bit of planning and practice you can have the food and other supplies you and your family need delivered directly to your doorstep.

Make Quality Time Thanksgiving's Secret Ingredient

(Family Features) Perhaps more than usual, the centerpiece this Thanksgiving won’t be the turkey, the stuffing or even family-famous recipes for sweet potato casserole or pumpkin pie. Instead, when gathering around a table with loved ones, the precious moments of togetherness will be what many families treasure most. This year, give yourself permission to savor the holiday and all its pleasures as a participant, rather than a harried host. Make the prep part of the party. If you’re hosting a small group of friends or family, invite a few guests over early to fill your kitchen with laughter and plenty of able hands to help prepare the meal. If space is at a premium, enlist help by asking guests to do some of the prep work at home or simply plan a potluck meal with everyone bringing a dish that’s ready to serve. Ditch cleanup duty. More casual celebrations are in the plans for 65% of people this season, according to a survey conducted by the Chinet® brand, and more than 80% of respondents agreed using disposable tableware can help reduce stress that may arise during the holiday season. Cleanup may be a necessary evil after a large Thanksgiving meal, but it need not take hours from your day.

33

Instead, rely on a disposable option like Chinet Classic White plates, which are strong enough to serve the heaviest, messiest meals with style. The convenient, microwave-safe line makes cleanup easy since you can simply toss them when you’re done. For example, dinner and compartment plates and trays are perfect for enjoying full-scale meals along with platters, bowls and napkins. Or, if your family prefers a more casual get-together with snacks and treats, appetizer and dessert plates offer easy ways for guests to serve themselves. Stick to the essentials. Instead of giving into your urge to serve everyone’s favorites, limit your menu to a few crowd-pleasers. One style of stuffing will do, and it’s unlikely anyone will notice if you skip a few sides. Tone it down to the must-haves and let the others fall away. You may be surprised by how much time you can save. After all, you probably don’t need five different pies when you’ll end up serving just a slice or two from each. Shop for shortcuts. If there is a dish or two that everyone counts on, go ahead and honor tradition. Otherwise, shop for time-trimming alternatives at the store. The salad bar typically offers a wealth of prepped ingredients like chopped onion and crumbled bacon, and there are a wide range of prepared foods you can simply heat and serve. Also check into the deli’s holiday specials; many stores offer bulk orders of freshly prepared items like mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce and salads. Simpler serving. Using your fine china can lead to a time-consuming effort in both setting it all out and cleaning those dishes at the end of the night. With an option like Chinet Cut Crystal plates, cups and wineglasses, you can add a touch of style to any event. The fully coordinated line of tableware allows you to dine in style then toss it all and move on to enjoying the rest of the day. Make Way for New Traditions

34

Although there’s plenty of comfort to be found in holiday traditions, this year is the perfect excuse to mix things up a little and infuse some new ideas into your celebration. Pass on family recipes. A traditional turkey dinner complete with a variety of seasonal sides and desserts is a staple for many families. To help ensure the tradition continues, use the extra time you may have together to teach older children how to prepare specific dishes that have been passed down through the generations. You could also have different family members like siblings or adult children take over making specific dishes, such as the turkey or pumpkin pie. Share your good fortune. It’s been a rough year for many, in several different ways. If you and yours are able, dedicating a portion of your day to helping those who’ve fared worse can be a powerful bonding experience. Not only do you share the feel-good vibes that come from helping others, the experience can open your eyes to the many blessings you and your loved ones share. Add group entertainment. If your family’s norm is to scatter as soon as the meal is done, or to scarf down a plate before returning to the gridiron action, look for ways to bring everyone together. Organize a board game tournament or gather a group to take a walk through the neighborhood and reminisce. Learn a new skill. Discover something new about your loved ones by inviting one or two (or more) to share a special skill with the group. You can develop a new appreciation after an afternoon chatting while learning how to crochet, perform magic card tricks or make DIY decor for the holiday season. Make a game of giving thanks. Ask each guest to jot down something they’re thankful for as they arrive. Later, after everyone has settled in, take turns drawing the cards, reading them aloud and letting everyone guess whose good tidings they’re hearing. It can be an easy way to catch up and allow you to celebrate special moments with one another. Find more time-saving ideas for a Thanksgiving filled with warm memories at MyChinet.com SOURCE: Chinet

How small businesses can be ready for this holiday shopping season amidst the pandemic

(BPT) - Nearly every business has been disrupted by COVID-19 in some way, which makes this year’s holiday shopping season more important than ever for many small businesses. Small business owners have demonstrated incredible resilience and creativity this year, and there are ways they can prepare for a holiday shopping season unlike any we’ve seen before.

For consumers, the season is already underway --and the way to reach them is online. More than 70% of U.S. adults said they planned to do more than half of their shopping digitally this year, and those shoppers are open to buying from small retailers, especially local small businesses.

Below are a few ways businesses can be digitally ready to reach customers this holiday shopping season from Kim Spalding, Google’s global product director for small business ads.

43

Create a strong digital presence and keep customers informed To help you get ready for the holidays, we created a holiday hub where business owners can get personalized recommendations to reach shoppers where they are across search, shopping and maps. Sixty-six percent of people in the U.S. who plan to shop this holiday season said they will shop more at local small businesses. This is great news for business owners, especially as they can stand out by personalizing the customer experience. To ensure customers are finding the most up-to-date information about your business when they search on Google, be sure to claim and update your Business Profile During this holiday season, you can add links to your online store so shoppers can easily place a pickup or delivery order when researching your business on Google, and also let customers know the added safety precautions you're taking throughout COVID, like offering plexiglass at checkout. In just six months, we’ve seen people changing how they shop. Global searches for ‘curbside pickup” have grown by over 3,000% over this time last year. Knowing that curbside pickup is likely to be of interest for many holiday customers, you could showcase this service, as well as offering virtual shopping concierge services, gift certificates, customizable gift packages, or flexible return policies. Make sure to share this information on all of your online channels, including your website, and across your social media channels. Show up when shoppers are searching For small businesses owners, it’s critical for your products to be in front of consumers searching online. We recently announced that retailers offering e-commerce can list their products for free on Google, making what you offer more accessible to the hundreds of millions of people who shop online every day. You can get started by either submitting your product feed through our Merchant Center or by automating this through platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce or BigCommerce. You can also get your inventory online instantly by connecting to Pointy from Google via a compatible point-of-sale system or device. If you’re ready to advertise, you can use Smart campaigns built specifically for small businesses. If you don’t yet have a website, Smart campaigns can automatically build a landing page with your phone number, hours, photos and even your reviews. Platforms like Wix and WordPress also offer free accounts that help small business owners build affordable websites. Adapt to changing customer behavior To keep your finger on the pulse of customer trends in real time, our Rising Retail categories tool shows a list of the fastest growing retail-related search categories on Google at a national and state level including the most popular queries related to each category. We know customers want to shop locally and support small businesses. And this is even more evident this holiday season, so be sure to get your business in front of the people who are looking for your products and services.

5 tips: How to create your own private spa at home

(BPT) - As Americans are spending more time at home in response to the pandemic, many are looking for ways to turn their living spaces into retreats of calm, comfort and well-being. For some people, that means major renovations. For others, it means making select improvements designed to add more tranquility and enjoyment to their lives. It's not so surprising then that homeimprovement contractors listing their services on Houzz saw a 58% boost in homeowner requests in June 2020, relative to June 2019. "In terms of design, I think people are seeing their living spaces as their refuges - sanctuaries where they're safe and comforted," notes architect Ryan Leidner on Dwell.com. "As the outside world becomes less touchable, I can see a great desire for the materials, textures and objects within our homes to have more of a tactile quality that invites us to use them. And I can see people getting more creative and interested in ways to bring the outside in, possibly re-imagining their living spaces as indoor gardens and landscapes." A prime area of focus for many homeowners has been their bathrooms, which are now being converted into spa-like havens of self-care, instead of just functional spaces. At the same time, many are adding features that aim for better cleanliness, sustainability and multi-generational living. 45

If "your own private spa" sounds like the perfect place for your family to re-energize and rejuvenate from the cares of each day, here are ideas for creating such a space in your home.

Add an extra-deep soaking tub. Gone are the days when a bath meant scrunching your limbs into a cramped basin of water and trying to stay warm. Today's roomy bathtubs are designed to let you stretch out and relax, fully immersed, in a soothing surround of hydrotherapeutic luxury.

Install a curbless shower and linear drain. The most progressive shower configurations are ergonomically constructed with sleek, curb-free, ADA-compliant entries, so family members need not step in and out, but merely walk in. QuickDrain USA offers ShowerLine PVC Linear Drains that swiftly eliminate surface water using one-directional sloping and engineering techniques developed in Europe. Unlike more traditional drains, a linear drain also allows for freedom of design; because it appears as an unobtrusive strip aligned with your shower wall, you can choose any kind of material for the rest of your shower floor - even larger-sized tiles. That means fewer seams that can collect mold, mildew and grime, and less cleaning for you.

Invest in voice-activated smart features. With a few technology and equipment upgrades, Alexa, Siri or Google Home can now run your bath at your temperature of choice, power up your shower, light up your mirror, warm your toilet seat, diffuse your favorite fragrance, play all your top tunes and perform a number of other functions aimed at customizing your home spa experience and boosting its luxury level.

Incorporate a steam shower. Equipment added right into your shower stall can pipe in fresh steam customized by temperature and duration. "Bathing" in the vapor can feel wonderfully soothing and hydrating, and it's said to produce health benefits ranging from better circulation and sinus drainage to clearer skin and rejuvenation of tired muscles.

Treat yourself to a towel warmer. Those living in cold climates may especially appreciate the luxury of having a warm, cozy towel in which to snuggle up after a relaxing bath or shower. These handy pieces of hardware are relatively easy to install and can be well worth the investment in terms of comfort.

When it comes to coping with the extra stress of COVID, your home can become a sanctuary that helps you relax and recharge. Consider making upgrades that will make time at home more peaceful and enjoyable for you and your family.
