Ninth & Broad
A
s a student, venturing to Ninth & Broad presented a rare reprieve from Duke’s suffocatingly manicured campuses. (For our purposes, while both Ninth Street and Broad Street fall just west of Duke’s east campus, we’re stretching this neighborhood to include the west campus as well.) I bought ramen noodles and two-for-one shampoo and conditioner from the Dollar General. I huddled over my laptop in Bean Traders-turned-Market Street-turned-Ninth Street-turned-Triangle Coffee House. And I went on my first grown-up date at Vin Rouge, thinking French food was appropriately flirtatious, even as I ordered the French onion soup. Now that I’ve moved back to Durham as a more seasoned adult, I laugh at eighteen-year-old me and her romantic enthrallment with this quaint corner of Durham. But like all first romances, they stay with us. Francesca’s has gone out of business, along with the beloved Play House toy store. There’s now a poke place, an upscale salad bar, even a Harris Teeter with a Starbucks. But if you walk along Ninth Street, right as you see the fire station poking up on the horizon, the air is still thick with the sickeningly clean smell of laundry wafting from White Star, and that’s enough to inspire youthful romance once again. —Katie Jane Fernelius
