IndyFringe is a place, an event, an environment, an attitude, a movement, an incubator for new talent and a magnet for imaginative, thoughtful, hopeful and transformational people.

IndyFringe

from an idea to an institution in 10 years. IndyFringe has a deep commitment to our community to strengthen and build quality of life. IndyFringe has enjoyed remarkable growth and each and every year audience numbers grow; in 2013 we reached over 36,000. The 100 seat IndyFringe Basile Theatre is booked every weekend and most nights throughout the year. We cannot meet the demand of our remarkable growth.

Ways you can donate Call Pauline Moffat, executive director, (317) 522-8099 To donate securely online: www.indyfringe.org. BY PHONE by calling (317) 869-6660 IN PERSON at every venue and at IndyFringe, 719E St Clair Street, 46202. BY MAIL IndyFringe, PO Box 44121, Indianapolis, 46244 See the list of donors at www.indyfringe.org. Add your name today with your gift.

Thank you. Join our generous benefactors who have contributed to the restoration, purchase and the on-going capital campaign – Frank and Katrina Basile, The Indianapolis Foundation, Central Indiana Community Foundation, the City of Indianapolis, Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation, Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, the Herbert Simon Family Foundation, Bader Foundation, Ms. Deborah Simon, Sherlock Family Foundation, Cunningham Group of Companies and the Massachusetts Avenue Community Development Corporation.

To meet the demand for more space, IndyFringe has embarked on Phase II of its capital improvements to create the IndyFringe “Trailhead”. The Trailhead is part community space, part theater and part support facility for the Cultural Trail. The theater will take the form of a simple “black box” on the exterior and a versatile multi-purpose space within. A movable wall will allow this fabulous community space to open to IndyFringe’s green space - an enticing asset along Indy’s Cultural Trail. The Trailhead addition will include a lobby, ticket office, elevator, restrooms, artist green room and

backstage access to both the existing theater and new community/theater space. As we celebrate our l0th Anniversary of providing a hub for performances and rehearsals for independent artists, we would ask you to help us complete the capital campaign. The vision to improve the Basile Theatre and construct new, adjoining public spaces will have a profound effect on the beautiful and historically rich nearby neighborhoods, the businesses of Mass Ave and our community of artists and audiences. Every gift, regardless of size, makes a difference.

Message from Mayor Ballard : Greetings! On behalf of the City of Indianapolis, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 10th Annual Indianapolis Theatre Fringe Festival (IndyFringe Festival). For 11 days every August, Indianapolis’ own Massachusetts Avenue is infused with theatre, art, and creativity as more than 25,000 fans from Chicago to Louisville come to watch performers experiment with new artistic expressions. IndyFringe is an important contributor to our vibrant arts and cultural scene and is a boost to local businesses as attendees explore the area and enjoy some of the City’s finest stores and restaurants.

Our community welcomes the local performers as well as artists from around the world who contribute to the City’s creativity. I extend my sincerest thanks to the performers, staff, volunteers, and community partners who ensure IndyFringe’s success. Best wishes for another successful event. Best regards,

Gregory A. Ballard Mayor City of Indianapolis

Message from CEO of CICF Brian Payne : The IndyFringe Festival is about theater, yes. It is about art and entertainment and showcasing the wonderful emerging and established artists who perform on each of the eight stages. But the Central Indiana Community Foundation also believes that IndyFringe is about community. Year after year we are delighted to see diverse audiences unite in their enthusiasm for the festival. We see them watch, enjoy, discuss and debate the huge range of Fringe creations and explore Mass Ave. As one of the five Cultural Districts connected by the Indianapolis Cultural

Trail, it is truly wonderful to see the area explode in a whirlwind of activity as IndyFringe unites with local businesses to support our community as well as the performers directly involved with the festival. Each year IndyFringe delivers on all the dreams we had for it when we first supported the idea of a Fringe Festival in 2005. Do yourself the favor of seeing as many performances as possible.

Brian Payne President and CEO Central Indiana Community Foundation

Message from BMO Harris Bank: It gives us great pleasure to be the lead sponsor as IndyFringe celebrates its l0th Anniversary and we thank the countless volunteers for all their dedicated, tireless work towards making this Festival such a tremendous success over the years. From humble beginnings ten years ago IndyFringe has grown from an idea to a world class festival, but it has not lost touch with its origins. Audiences love everything about IndyFringe - the theaters, the performers, the diversity, the energy and the

support given through the festival to the Indianapolis theater community. We believe BMO and IndyFringe are a perfect fit. BMO also lives and breathes the values and vision of Diversity plus Inclusion equals Innovation. IndyFringe is a true incubator for the arts and we congratulate them on 10 years in our community!

IndyFringe is a rollicking celebration of theatre old and new, edgy and not-so edgy that happens over 11 days, August 14-24, in the Mass Ave Cultural District. It features eight stages presenting comedy, cabaret, dance, drama, magic, music and multi-media performances. The festival exploded in Indianapolis ten years ago and has grown into an annual cultural attraction that continues to draw in record audiences.

Don’t miss out!

Buy tickets for an eclectic group of shows, or just come hang out in the Beer Tent. IndyFringe brings the subculture to the surface.

What makes IndyFringe unique? It is extremely rare for performers at any venue to have full artistic freedom and even more rare to receive a percentage of the box office. Over the past nine years IndyFringe performers have earned $850,000 from box office. These two things are what set IndyFringe apart from other organizations and make it truly unique.

How to Fringe:

1. Pick Some Plays

What can I do at the Fringe? THEATRE PERFORMANCES See a show! Read descriptions, synopses and reviews to find something that interests you, or try your luck and see something outside your comfort zone.

2. Buy a Ticket

INDOOR SHOWS IndyFringe theatres are located both on and off Massachusetts Avenue in air-conditioned theaters. Refer to the map on pg 20. OUTDOOR SHOWS Outdoor performances take place at the Outdoor Tent, on the corner of Mass Ave and St Clair Street. See page 22 for more information. Admission is FREE but please be generous with a donation as you enter. STREET PERFORMANCES AND BUSKERS A variety of performances are taking place around Mass Ave — remember to tip the Buskers! These folks can be anything from Musicians, Poets and Storytellers, to Magicians, Fire Jugglers and Hoopers. They come from all walks of life and bring fun, and entertainment with them. They want to share their art-form with the world on the oldest stage in the world. The oldest stage in the world is outside! In the streets, on the sidewalks, and in the parks — this is where theatre began a long time ago, and these Buskers are living out a tradition that has been passed down through the ages.

• Tickets are available at the door half an hour before the show starts.

• Shows start on time. Remember we will not admit latecomers to any Fringe performance under any circumstance!

3. Find Your Fringe Theater

• Check out the venue map on page 20. Once you get to Mass Ave, drop off the car. All sites are within walking distance of one another.

4. Make Fringeships

• There’s half an hour between each performance. Take advantage of it! Talk to people about shows, connect with performers on social media, and post about your adventure at #Fringe14

5. Share the Love

• If you have fun, use #Fringe14 to tell your friends about us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. If you have lots of fun, consider supporting IndyFringe by donating at any Fringe Festival location or at indyfringe. org/donate-fringe

• Part of the Fringe experience is to see something new. Word of mouth is a great way to select a Fringe show – so don’t be shy! Ask someone.

• Read the warnings and descriptions and then see something outside your comfort zone – be bold – be courageous - see something outrageous.

10th Anniversary Our festival is a success because of you! From the performers, the board and staff, we applaud our audiences for embracing the fringe movement in Indianapolis. We thank our donors and funders whose generous contributions allow us to continue to produce shows year-round at the IndyFringe Basile Theatre. We are excited to present the tenth annual festival which highlights our amazing local talent and talent from across the country and around the world! My special thanks to Lee Dykstra, my husband and an amazing volunteer. Together we have spent the last 10 years as a team at IndyFringe. His invaluable help in restoring and maintaining the IndyFringe Building and working with Blackline Architects on The Trailhead addition will ensure IndyFringe’s home on Mass Ave is a valuable asset to our community for years to come. Buy some tickets, attend shows and have a fabulous time. And if you have a spare dollar, donate to IndyFringe. — Pauline Moffat, Executive Director

A Brief History Of Fringe Festivals In 1947, eight theatre groups turned up – uninvited – to perform at the newly established and curated Edinburgh International Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Although not listed in the official program, the groups performed anyway at

venues they found themselves. The following year a journalist coined the term “fringe festival” to describe these non-juried shows that were turning up annually. The Edinburgh Fringe is now the largest arts festival in the world with 2,871 shows.
