THE EXPONENTIAL GROWTH OF SPORT CLIMBING

CLIMBING DEBUTED AT THE TOKYO 2020 OLYMPIC GAMES AND HAS BEEN CONFIRMED FOR PARIS 2024 AND LOS ANGELES 2028 WITH THREE DISCIPLINES: BOULDERING, DIFFICULTY AND THE NEW SPEED CLIMBING.

The increase in popularity was reflected in the last Olympic Games in Tokyo. In Spain, on the day of the final, the broadcast had the highest daily audience in terrestrial television.

The IFSC has reached an agreement with Discovery+ for the broadcasting on Eurosport for the next 3 years for the broadcasting of all World Cup events and the respective World Championships.

The IFSC Youtube channel has accumulated over 53 million views.

United States: The number of indoor climbers has grown from 4.45 million users in 2011 to 5.54 million in 2020. In 2016 there were 400 commercial climbing walls operating in the country, increasing to 478 in 2019.

United Kingdom: In 1988 there were 40 climbing walls, rising to over 350 by 2014.

Spain: Currently has 200 climbing walls, 25% more than the number counted in 2018.

France: In the city of Paris alone there are more than 350 climbing walls (many of them very small).

Germany: There are currently 500 climbing walls, with a high potential for growth given the population of 83M people.

Indoorwall is the leading chain with 15 climbing walls, followed by Climbat with 7 installations, and Sharma and Urban Monkey with 3. The Spanish Mountaineering and Climbing Federation has more than 248,000 federative license holders (2020 data) and is among the top 5 federations with more licenses in Spain.

Students enrolled in Mountaineering and Climbing sporting education represent 12% of the Middle Grades and 3.2% of higher grades.

Austria: In six years, the number of climbing has tripled.

Japan: In 2000 there were 96 climbing walls, rising to 435 in 2015. 120 are located in Tokyo.
