Hindu Campsite Fundraiser Raises $5.6MM Investment in Future Generations

houston: The South Asian community across the nation has been growing at a fast clip as also in Texas. But nowhere has the community been as active in the past decade – COVID notwithstanding – as it has been in the Houston area. It is not only in the typical draw for new immigrants –religious places of worship – but the attention has turned to building institutions that can serve generations to come.

Of these, an idea that has percolated in the minds of elders has been to merge religious teachings with cultural assimilation of Indian values within the context of the mainstream American landscape we all live in.

The result has been the Hindu Heritage Youth Camp which has been catering to young kids for the past 39 years with activities each year at different campsites in the region. Over 5,000 youth have attended the HHYC in over 39 years. The need for the camp is overwhelming as 600 applications are received each year and only 200 are accepted.

Just three years ago, these same elders led the effort to buy their own site near Columbus, with initial seed money coming from a generous $1.7million donation by benefactors Subhash and Saroj Gupta.

A first ever fundraiser was held for the Texas Hindu Campsite this past Sunday, October 1 at a sold-out event for 725 people at the GSHS Event Center on West Bellfort. Dinner was catered by Dawat Catering. The Gala CoChairs were Maneesh Mehra, Bharat Pallod, Rishi Bhutada and Nikki Malani Shukla, all past Youth Camp Directors who have been involved with the camp since childhood.

The campsite is projected to cost close to $5.6 million and Phase one is underway. The plan includes multipurpose building, theater, cabins for campers, kitchen, swimming pool, basketball court, soccer field, outdoor amphitheater, lake, and walking trails. The goal is to host the first youth camp in the summer of 2024. The campsite could also be utilized for a variety of events, every temple and other organizations for their retreats for youth and adults, corporate retreats, and family gatherings.

Gala Chairs, Subhash and Saroj Gupta spoke passionately about this project and how “Every child should be able to attend and no one should be denied the opportunity of this valuable life enhancing experience”.

Subash Gupta thanked the Baru Goyal Family, Ashok Danda family and Vijay Pallod Family for joining him in purchasing the land for the First Hindu Campsite.

Ramesh Bhutada, CEO of Star Pipe Products, in his video mes-

sage, urged everyone to contribute to the cause as we are far from India, and the camp is a way to educate the youth and develop their Hindu identity. He generously has donated $1 million for this cause and his son Rishi Bhutada gave a further $100,000.

Sushma Pallod spoke about how the youth make friends for life at these camps. She also narrated the need for having our own camp site considering development of future generations. She has been the “Camp Chef” for the past 26 years, organizing the complete meal schedule for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. She is fondly known as “Maa Annapurana”.

The Pallod family has been involved with the camp for 36 years and donated over $300,000. Vijay and Sushma Pallod and their children, Bharat, Kavita and Namita – who all have been camp directorshave been dedicated volunteers year after year in various capacities.

The event featured entertainment by Krishna Gana Sudha Music Academy under the direction of Vidushi Rajesshwary Bhat who opened the event with World Peace Prayer - beautiful chants of Vedic prayers. A vibrant dance performance followed by students of the Shri Natraj School of Dance and choreographed by founder Kusum Sharma.

A star attraction was Rajiv Satyal, comedian from Los Angeles, who had the crowd roaring with laughter. He was the emcee for PM Modi’s welcome reception in San Jose, California in 2015.

Puja Bhuta, a 13-yearold camper gave testimony of her experience at the camp and Partha Dargan also spoke about his many years of attending the camp, as a camper, counselor and now a camp director.

Dr. Nikita Malani Shukla, spoke about how attending the camp since childhood gave her a great foundation of Hindu values and second generation in the USA, regardless of becoming doctors, engineers, lawyers and any profession they choose, are able to implement the values they have learned. The Malani Family Foundation generously donated $500,000 to the campsite project.

A generational walk showcased seven families of three genera-

tions who have participated in the HHYC, with many young grandchildren who will be future campers. The seven families are of Suresh Patel, first camp direc-

tor and founding member; Usha Mehra; Vijay Pallod; Dilip Mehta founding member; Gopal Agarwal; Neelam Verma and Kiran Bhutada.

This event brought many 15 temples and organizations from the Greater Houston Community together to participate for “OUR” campsite, a place for all for generations to come! The Arya Samaj donated $150,000, VHPA $50,000, HSS $25,000.

The event was coordinated and emceed by Manisha Gandhi. She was a camp counselor in the early years of the camp and her son Manan was a camper and a counselor in recent years.

Texas Hindu Campsite will serve many future generations to educate these children about culture, heritage, and Hindu values. It will help build a foundation of dharma. It is located at 1655 Smith Rau Road, Columbus, TX 78934 . For more information visit https:// www.texashinducampsite.org

Eternal Gandhi Museum of Houston Opens on Gandhi Jayanti

houston: Martin Luther King’s nephew, Isaac Newton Farris Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson, Dr. Rajmohan Gandhi, were among those who gathered Monday afternoon to celebrate the grand opening of the Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston.

Held on Oct. 2, 2023, Gandhi’s 154th birthday, the ribbon-cutting marked the culmination of months of effort and fundraising by founder Atul Kothari and museum board members, who have been working on this project since 2016.

“I read Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography and it went straight to my heart,” Kothari said. “You must practice your truth, whatever it is, to be the change you want to be.”

This first of its kind, interactive museum offers insights into different chapters of Gandhi’s life, including his childhood in India and early adulthood as a lawyer in Africa.

It also allows visitors to learn about other civic leaders, from King to Nelson Mandela and Cesar Chavez — who embraced nonviolent civil disobedience in their pursuit of social progress.

“Knowledge of how past historical events affected people differ-

ently can create empathy in the present for other people of different racial, ethnic, economic, religious or social classes whose history may differ from the mainstream,” Farris said. “In recognition of that impact that the great Mahatma had on my uncle, my aunt, Coretta Scott King, established the Gandhi

Room in the Martin Luther King’s center’s Freedom Hall building, where the millions of tourists who visit the King Center each year can view personal items that belong to the great Mahatma.”

Fort Bend County elected officials lauded the museum’s opening.

“Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy remains deeply relevant in today’s world, where we face pressing global challenges,” U.S. Rep. Al Green said in a statement. “From military conflicts to social injustice movements, his teachings offer guidance for peaceful solu-

tions and social change.”

Green helped the EGMH board secure $3 million through the Community Project Funding to get the project off the ground.

“When we heard about the vision for this facility — going through a pandemic, at a time when there was so much division in our country and our global society — we couldn’t think of a more perfect thing than this to get behind and to support,” said Dexter L. McCoy, Fort Bend County Precinct 4 commissioner.

The museum received a grant of $450,000 from Fort Bend County under the American Rescue Plan in 2021.

The goal is to create a cultural and educational hub for Texas students in grades six-12 by offering curriculum-based tours, inspiring the next generation of leaders to advocate for peace and social justice.

“Thanks to this museum, you can meet Gandhi, King and Mandela,” said Dr. Rajmohan Gandhi. “I salute all of you who created it, the donors, architects, builders. Almost everyone visiting this museum will feel lifted up, they will breathe the air of hope.”

Hometown Dallas Mustangs: 2023 Sunoco MLC Champions

houston: Under the lights at America’s premier cricket venue in Grand Prairie, TX, the Lone Star State’s own Dallas Mustangs claimed the 2023 Sunoco Minor League Cricket Championship on Sunday night. The Mustangs’ victory was anchored by a tremendous all-round performance from Nosthush Kenjige, whose 27 runs and three wickets won him Bru Player of the Final honors.

The hometown Mustangs won the toss and elected to bat, but quickly lost star batter Andries Gous in the second over. The Mustangs struggled to score early on, reduced to 46/5 by the end of the 10th over. However, a 56-run lower order partnership between Ali Sheikh and Kenjige gave Dallas a fighting chance, with Sheikh scoring 36 from 25 balls.

Kenjige continued to anchor the inning and contributed 27 before being run out in the twentieth over.

The Mustangs reached 121 runs, leaving the Cavaliers what seemed to be a highly attainable target to chase down. For New Jersey, three bowlers — Junaid Nadir Mahsood, Sunny Patel and Adil Bhatti

— each claimed two wickets, in an outstanding performance in the field by the Cavaliers.

New Jersey seemed intent on popping the champagne as soon as possible, coming out firing with

38 runs from the first five overs, led by 27 from Kennar Lewis. The champagne was soon put back on ice, though, as Dallas picked up wickets at a rapid rate while clamping down on the Cavaliers’

scoring, including a match-winning bowling performance from Kenjige who conceded only nine runs for his three wickets across four overs.

Ehsan Adil and Hammad Azam also claimed a pair of wickets each as Dallas ran through the New Jersey lineup, bowling out the Cavaliers for only 77 to win by 44 runs and lift the championship trophy under a moonlit Texan sky.

The Mustangs’ victory saw them win the MiLC title for the first time in the tournament’s third season, following victories by the Silicon Valley Strikers in 2021 and the Seattle Thunderbolts in 2022.

There was further hardware awarded to Dallas’ lineup as Andries Gous won the Laxmi Most Valuable Player of the Tournament honors, the South African star leading all-run scorers in MiLC with 516 at a strike rate of 140.98.

Indian American Sally ‘Shobana’ Grimes is CEO of the Maker of Guinness

ChiCago: Spirits company Diageo has named Indian American Sally Grimes as Chief Executive Officer, North America, effective Oct. 1, the global beverage giant that makes Guinness and Johnnie Walker, announced earlier this week. The daughter of Indian immigrants, she has “over 25 years’ experience in the food and beverage sector,” and “is a proven leader in consumer goods and is wellknown as a world-class innovator and brand builder,” Diageo said in the Sept. 21 announcement. She will report to Debra Crew, chief executive, and will join the Diageo Executive Committee.

Grimes was most recently the chief executive officer at Clif Bar & Company, the leading maker of organic energy bars in North America. In that role, she “successfully led the development of a 10-year strategic growth plan, designed the company’s purpose, created a clear portfolio strategy, and ultimately completed the successful sale of the company to Mondelez International,” the announcement said.

She grew up in Bourbonnais, about an hour south of Chicago, according to a 2014 profile in the Chicago Tribune. Her parents emigrated from India in the 1960s to pursue their education. Grimes’

first name is Shobana, and her middle name, Sally, “was picked to honor her mother’s first American friend after she arrived in the U.S.,” the Tribune report said. Her mother was a dietitian focused on the science of food, while her father was an administrator at a veterans hospital. Grimes told the

Tribune that she “credits her parents for her empathy, remembering their open-door way of helping people, something she associates with the immigrant culture.”

In an interview with the Chicago Booth School of Business, she said her interest in all things food goes back as far as she can remember.

”Growing up, I remember at every meal always talking about what we were going to have for the next meal,” she said. She had entrepreneurial aspirations focused more on creativity than culinary arts, she told her alma mater, adding that her first job was selling homemade greeting cards door-to-door. “My

father was supportive, but also very traditional and conservative, and as I got older, he said, ‘I’m not sure art should be your career path of choice.’”

Before joining Clif, she was group president of the Prepared Foods segment of Tyson Foods, where she ran a $10 billion, 25,000-person organization, reporting to the Global CEO. Her early career began in banking, followed by multiple positions within large consumer goods companies.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in finance from Valparaiso University, Indiana, she spent a few years at First Citizens Bank before heading to the University of Chicago for an MBA. Her first job after business school was at Kraft, where she started as an associate brand manager on the iconic “blue box” Kraft Macaroni & Cheese business. She started working on the shapes portfolio, with her first product launch being SpongeBob SquarePants Macaroni & Cheese. Later assignments included Kraft salad dressing, DiGiorno pizza, and Jell-O.

She left Kraft in 2007 to run marketing for Newell Rubbermaid’s writing business, including Sharpie and Paper Mate. -- American Kahani

Story: Choocha inadvertently challenges Bholi Punjaban in an election for the legislative assembly. But when he and Hunny end up with a gift to create petrol, it lands them in trouble with the water mafia. Will they get out of the pickle?

Review: The viewer is set to crash land into the world of fukreys (no-gooders), Hunny (Pulkit Samrat), Choocha (Varun Sharma), Laali (Manjot Singh), and Panditji (Pankaj Tripathi) for the third time. As fun introductory credits roll, a recap of the previous two parts is weaved into a song to bring the viewers up to speed with the story. This time around, Bholi Punjaban (Richa Chadha) is contesting the election for the portfolio of Water Resources Minister, and Choocha emerges as her unlikely opponent and a public favourite, vowing to help them overcome their water woes. As this threatens Bholi’s prospects, she devises a plan to prevent Choocha from campaigning, setting a series of outrageous events into motion.

a hodgepodge of sequences. Initially, you think the story will be about who among Choocha and Bholi will be elected. Instead, it turns out to be about the latter’s vile ways to defeat the former, stuffing in a love triangle, kidnapping, and how the fukreys try to save themselves from a water mafioso who wants to exploit their gift to make petrol. Some sequences are funny, but many are overstretched, over-the-top, and do not complement the overall narrative. The movie also touches upon day zero — a situation when there will be no water — and gives a glimpse of what that could mean for us, but that’s not explored further, which could have been an interesting take.
