Odisha Tragedy: How The Three Trains Collided into Each Other

Houston: A series of disasterous events unfolded in Odisha’s Balasore last Friday evening when three trains got involved in one of India’s deadliest railway tragedies in history.

In the first few hours after the accident, there was some confusion about how the accident had occured exactly and which train got derailed first.

Initial reports after the accident suggested that only one train, the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, got derailed about 300 metres from the Bahanaga Bazar station in Odisha. Later, reports suggested that it had rammed into the derailed coaches of another goods train, which caused the crash. Then it emerged that another train, Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express (Yesvantpur Express), was also involved in the crash, making it a tripletrain collision.

However, officials have given an exact sequence of the events that led to the deadly train crash, which killed over 270 people and injured nearly 800. According to officials, the Coromandel Express entered the wrong track and rammed into a goods train. Upon collision, some of its coaches tossed over to another track where they collided with the Yesvantpur Express.

Notably, the goods train did not get derailed since it was carry-

* At 6.58 pm, the Chennaibound Coromandel Express mistakenly entered the loopline instead of continuing on the mainline towards Chennai.

* The Coromandel Express then crashed into a stationary freight train that was on the loopline at the Bahanaga Bazar station.

* The impact caused the engine

of the Coromandel Express train to mount on top of the freight train, causing the derailment of its 22 compartments. However, the goods train didn’t get derailed.

* Following the first derailment, three coaches of the Coro-

mandal Express veered off onto a parallel line and collided with the rear two coaches of the Bengaluru-Howrah train which was coming through from the opposite side at a speed of 126km/ hour.

* The Bengaluru-Howrah train had almost crossed the Coromandel. Unfortunately, the last two coaches were still crossing the parallel track when the derailed coaches of the Coromandel Express rammed into them.

* The five coaches — three from the Coromandel Express and two from the BengaluruHowrah Express — that collided into each other were among the worst hit and saw the maximum casualties.

* There were about 1,257 reserved passengers onboard Coromandel Express and 1,039 reserved passengers onboard the Bengaluru-Howrah train.

India’s Central Bureau of Investigations has taken over the investigatin of the train accident, including the possibility of human error in signalling.

Col. Vipin Kumar Reappointed to Food Insecurity Board

Houston: On Wednesday, May 31, 2023 India House’s Executive Director, Col. Vipin Kumar (Retired) was re-appointed for 2 more years as a Director on the City of Houston’s Food Insecurity Board, approved by a unanimous vote by the Mayor and City Council. The board is responsible for advising and making recommendations to the Mayor, Council, and Department Directors to address issues pertaining to food insecurity based on a topic of study which will be assigned by the Mayor each year.

Over the past 3.5 years India House has been conducting bimonthly food distribution drives

feeding over 500 families every month, around 6,000 families every year.

The Food Insecurity Board will consist of 19 members. The Food Insecurity Board is expected to focus on key food, nutrition, and agriculture policy issues and opportunities that are affected by government and legislation; create recommended policy priorities that best suit the needs of Houston, with an emphasis on community food security; and educate the public and policymakers about food system.

Taral Patel Announces Run for FB County Commissioner

Houston: A high profile IndianAmerican policy expert, Taral V Patel, who works with the Biden administration on domestic US policy issues in Washington DC, has announced that he is running for the post of commissioner in Fort Bend county, Texas, precinct 3.

Patel announced on social media that he is running to flip the seat from red (Republican) to blue (Democrat), and to make Fort Bend a forward thinking stronghold in Texas.

Commissioners are elected officials who are policy makers, overseeing the operation and administration of the county. They are responsible for overseeing the county’s management and administration, representing county interests at the state and federal level, participating in long-range planning, and managing the county budget and finances.

Patel announced his candidacy on Twitter earlier this week and posted a campaign video. “I’m announcing my campaign for Fort Bend County Commissioner. Together, we can push past the divisive politics that we see in the news — and build a stronger, diverse, & more united Fort Bend,” he said.

litical roles and was the youngest chief of staff to serve for the Fort Bend county’s judge’s office when another high profile Indian American, KP George, was elected as judge. Patel had worked as a strategist during George’s campaign in the 2018 midterm elections. Earlier, he had held positions on many campaigns including Mayor Bill White, Senator Rodney Ellis and Wendy Davis.

Patel’s parents immigrated to the US from India and he grew up in Greater Houston studying at Cinco Ranch High School and graduating from University of Texas at Austin.

“One of the things we have to think about is the bridge between India and the United States,” he said. “How do we compete with the challenge the Chinese have

placed on the table,” he asked, specifically citing issues of mobility and the world's energy supply.

The Congress Party defeated the BJP in recent state elections in the Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka states, wins that came after a series of state elections defeats after Modi became India’s prime minister in 2014.

Fraudulent Malabar Gold & Diamonds Showroom in Pakistan Shut Down

The case was filed by Ma- • labar Gold & Diamonds against Mr. Muhammad Faizan, who illegally used the Malabar Gold & Diamonds brand name to operate a jewellery store in Islamabad, Pakistan.

A civil case was filed by the • brand in Pakistan, which resulted in a court order that immediately halted the illegal usage.

Malabar Gold & Diamonds • clarified that it does not operate any showroom in Pakistan.

Malabar Gold & Diamonds, the 6th largest jewellery retailer globally with 317 retail outlets across the Middle East, the Far East, the USA & India, has won a major legal battle against brand impersonation in Islamabad, Pakistan. The case was filed by the brand against Mr. Muhammad Faizan, a Pakistani national, who was operating a jewellery store illegally in the name of Malabar Gold & Diamonds in Islamabad, Pakistan. In addition to using the brand name and other trademarks of Malabar Gold & Diamonds to operate his jewellery store, Mr. Faizan also managed social media pages in Pakistan using the brand name, brand ambassadors, and product images of Malabar Gold & Diamonds.

Upon the filing of the civil case by the legal team of Malabar Gold & Diamonds, the Pakistani court immediately ordered the takedown of all “Malabar Gold & Diamonds” sign boards and to stop all usage of the brand name and trademarks.

As the accused refused to abide by the court orders, Malabar Gold & Diamonds filed a contempt pe-

tition in court, resulting in the accused being arrested, imprisoned, and presented in the Court.

Since jail imprisonment was an assured outcome of the civil case, Mr. Faizan approached Malabar Gold & Diamonds for a settlement and subsequent agreement to the conditions put forth by the brand. This included the withdrawal of the trademark application filed by the accused for registering ‘Malabar Gold & Diamonds’ under his name, and publishing confession and declaration in all editions of major English and Urdu newspapers chosen by Malabar Gold & Diamonds; all of which Mr. Fai-

zan agreed to and complied.

IAA Hosts Niche Entertaintment’s ‘Dil Se’: Superlative Singing & Dancing

Houston: The musical genius of composer A.R. Rahman was on display through a superlative audio-visual and live performance by Niche Entertainment of Pune. Niche has presented a series of such unique performances for over a decade, including “Bhairav to Bahiravi”, “Black and White” and “Prabhat to Sairat”.

Niche Entertainment is currently on a 14-city USA tour with the “Dil Se ...” show. Indo-American Association of Houston was the national sponsor of the entire USA tour. The Houston show took place last Friday, June 2 at the Stafford Civic Centre on Cash Road. After the Houston show, the troupe had four more to go.

IAA Board of Directors member Radhika Day came on stage and announced a discounted ticket package for IAA patrons for upcoming performances of Mika Singh and theatrical production of ‘Mughal-e-Azam’. Day also urged

“Dil Se ...” is directed by Milind Oak. The performance script was written by Ashay Walamb with Nachiket Devasthali as the narrator. The singers are Abhilasha Chellam, Ashutosh Joshi, Deepika Datar and Abhishek Telang. The dancers were Kunal Phadke, Abhishek Havaragi, Rutuja Ingle, and Riya Desai.

The show traced Rahman’s life and his musical growth. The presentation also focused on his close relationship with Director Mani Ratnam and his appearance on the international scene through the composition of “Jai Ho” for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and Shekhar Kapur’s ‘Bombay Dreams’

Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’s central conflict is one that makes it instantly relatable to millions of middle-class Indians. When it comes right down to it, young Indore-based couple Kapil (Vicky Kaushal) and Soumya (Sara Ali Khan) have some tough calls to take: will they be able to go through with it?

Both are constricted for space in their house, with mummyji, daddyji, mamaji, mamiji, and a too smart for his own good nephew, who is constantly inserting himself in between the young couple when they want to get cosy. The only way out, as Soumya sees it, is an abode in which they can enjoy their privacy, and to which end, the two embark on a path on which there are several roadblocks, including (spoiler alert) a fake divorce

As for Kaushal and Khan, the former does better at his ‘kanjoos’ self (representing people who deduct portions from their ‘aaj’ to save for their ‘kal’); the latter needs to build in significantly more variation in delivery.
