Celebrations of India’s 75th Republic Day from the Himalayas to Houston

New Delhi: Thousands of people lined a ceremonial boulevard in the heart of India’s capital on Friday to watch a colorful parade showcasing the country’s military power and cultural heritage to mark its 75th Republic Day. French President Emmanuel Macron attended the parade as the chief guest at the celebration of the adoption of the country’s Constitution on Jan. 26, 1950, following India’s independence from British colonial rule. Indian President Draupadi Murmu escorted Macron in a ceremonial horse-drawn carriage from the nearby president’s palace to the viewing stand. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wearing a saffron-and-yellow– colored turban, greeted Macron at the viewing stand. Both leaders strongly condemned the terrorist attack on Israel on 7 October and expressed solidarity with the people of Israel. Condemning the huge loss of civilian lives in the ongoing conflict, they emphasised the need to respect international humanitarian law and to create conditions, including through a humanitarian ceasefire, for aid to flow to the affected population in the Gaza region. They also called for an immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.

Houston Hindus Brave Chill to Celebrate Ram Mandir

By Kapil Sharma Houston: Despite the frosty bite of winter, Houston’s Hindu community embraced warmth and devotion on Saturday, 27th January, celebrating the momentous Prana Pratishtha of the Shri Ram Mandir at Blalock Rd in Houston. Over 600 devotees from diverse backgrounds filled the venue, hosted by the Shri Sita Ram Foundation USA, proving that a little chill couldn’t dampen the fervent spirit of faith and celebration of Houston’s Hindu community. The day began with the soulful chants of ISKCON’s kirtan, setting the stage for a vibrant atmosphere of prayer and song. The sacred recitation of the Sundarkand followed, resonating with auspicious beginnings. As the morning unfolded, the venue came alive with a rich display of cultural programs. Captivating Ram Leela performances brought the epic Ramayana to life, each scene a tableau of devotion and artistry. Graceful songs and dances in Lord Ram’s honor painted the stage with colorful vibrancy, while the melodious strains of Ram bhajans played on the flute wove a web of divine serenity through the air. An elaborate havan ceremony, with its specially designed vedika, stood as a centerpiece of the festivities. Amidst the crackling flames and fervent chanting of mantras, the air hummed with an electric devotion. The spectacular Aarti was accompanied by a helicopter showering fragrant petals on the crowds, further elevating the spiritual fervor, and the helicopter’s impressive maneuvers in the wind added a touch of mes-

merizing wonder. Taking to the streets, a vibrant parade pulsated with music, vividly depicting different phases of Lord Ram’s life. Young and old devotees danced and sang with unbridled enthusiasm, their voices merging in a melodious chorus of “Jai Shri Ram,” echoing through the venue. A particular highlight was the 4’x8’ authentic replica of the Ram Mandir, that captured the hearts and attention of our devotees. Adding to the celebratory spirit were esteemed guests like Judge Julie Mathews, Shri Surendran Pattel, Dr. Dasika from Shri Sharadamba temple, Umang Mehta from Deep Foods, and priests from several temples, all gracing the occasion with their presence and blessings. The celebration finally reached its heartwarming conclusion with the distribution of a specially flown-in prasad from Ayodhya. This sacred offering, carrying the blessings of the newly consecrated temple, left a lasting impression

and a tangible connection to the momentous occasion in Ayodhya. “With the grace of Lord Ram, the Shri Sita Ram Foundation celebrated His return to His home after 500 years,” said Dr. Arun Verma, the foundation’s founder. “Over 600 individuals, including prominent community leaders and priests from various temples, joined the festivities, making it a day to remember with havan, cultural performances, and a breathtaking flower shower. My heartfelt gratitude to the devotees, the volunteers, the performers and the guests for joining us in the celebration of this momentous occasion.” As the echoes of “Jai Shri Ram” faded away, one thing was clear: the spirit of Lord Ram and the unwavering faith of his devotees had ignited a warmth that defied the winter chill, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who witnessed these historic celebrations in Houston.

Faith in Action: The Tireless Contributors to Hinduism’s Fourishing Diaspora

By Thara Narasimhan & Rajesh Kumar On the momentous day of January 21st, 2024, the Hindus of Greater Houston gathered in celebration for the inauguration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, India. This historic event was marked by a profound gesture of recognition towards those steadfast individuals whose unwavering commitment to Shri Ram and the principles of Hindu Dharma has significantly enriched the community. These individuals, revered as “Ram Bhakth,” were honored for their devotion and service, embodying the very essence of gratitude and respect on this auspicious occasion. In a proud acknowledgment of enduring dedication, Beth Kulkarni, a founding pillar of the Hindus of Greater Houston and the Hindu Temple of Woodlands, was celebrated. Even in her octogenarian years, she remains a beacon of guidance and support, her wisdom an invaluable asset, particularly in her media liaison efforts for the organization. Her initiative in organizing a pivotal gathering at the Mahatma Gandhi Center on December 6th, 1992, played a crucial role in the historical claim to rebuild the sacred Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Her successful endeavor to feature this significant event in the Houston Chronicle highlighted the communal spirit and dedication to the cause. Kusum Vyas, a visionary force, magnified the presence of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir cause with striking billboard displays along Highway 59. These captivating visuals, heralding the connected car

The global resonance of Shri Ram Lalla and the Ram Janmabhumi Prana Prathistha celebrations, amplified by the aerial banner proclaiming “Universe chants Jai Shree Ram,” beautifully encapsulated the timeless wisdom of Hindu Dharma. This event, bridging ancient traditions with the modern era, has not only celebrated a pivotal moment in Hindu spirituality but has also set a benchmark for how devotion and unity can create a lasting impact, echoing the universal message of peace, devotion, and unity across the globe.

The documentary Colours of Life, directed by Praveen Morchhale who also stars in the film, is about the awardwinning film director who revisits the Himalayan Mountain villages 5 years after shooting a national award-winning film in which local villagers appeared.    Naam, a short film directed by Sooraj Gunjal, is the story of a single parent who changes her identity to get a job as house help in order to survive. The ladies forged a deep connection, often sharing their personal pregnancy experiences. Their bond is tested due to a significant understanding.  Following a reception, the final film, a feature again by director Suman Ghosh, Kabuliwala, the timeless tale written by Rabindranath Tagore, is about a middleaged Afghan man, Rahmat, whose heart overflows with fatherly love for a little girl. Set in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) during 1965, it captures a time in which warm relationships knew no boundaries— transcending borders, religions, and cultures.  The highlight of every Indian Film Festival of Houston is the presentation of awards for the best short, documentary, and feature. This year will be no exception.   We invite you to see more information and to purchase tickets at IFFH (iffhinc.org). Join us at this exciting two-day event.
