PM Narendra Modi Has a Clear Vision for India: Barack Obama

U

S President Barack Obama who has held meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at several occasions, has found in him a politician who is honest and has a clear vision for India, the White House has said. “President Obama has found Prime Minister December 2015 Edition (epaper)

Modi to be somebody who is honest and direct, somebody who has good command of the facts, somebody who has a clear understanding of the issues that confront his country and our relationship,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters at his daily news conference

yesterday. On Monday President Obama met PM Modi in Paris on the sidelines of the United Nation’s Climate Change Summit. This was the sixth meeting between the two leaders since the met first at the White House last September.“He (Modi) also is somebody that has a clear vision for where he

wants to take his country, and it makes him not just an effective politician, but an effective Prime Minister,” Mr Earnest said. “Obama certainly does respect Prime Minister Modi and has appreciation for his skills and abilities as a politician. He also is somebody who is given a very difficult challenge of sitting atop the world’s largest democracy,” he said. “That’s not easy to work and it’s not easy work and the president of the US has special insight into how difficult it is,” he added. Referring to the frequent meetings between the two leaders, Mr Earnest said President Obama had the opportunity to consult with PM Modi on a number of occasions. “I think that isn’t just a testament to their good working relationship, it

actually is a testament to the important issues that are at stake between our two countries and the ability of the leaders of our two countries to work through those issues and to advance our shared interests is a good thing,” Mr Earnest said. “It’s a good thing for the world, it’s also a good thing for the citizens of our two countries,” he said. Responding to another question, the White House press secretary said he is not aware of any immediate visit of the Prime Minister to the White House, but did not rule it before the end of next year. “I’m not aware of any meetings that are on the agenda at this point, but I certainly wouldn’t rule out another visit by Prime Minister Modi before the end of next year,” Mr Earnest said. www.indian-times.com.au

Facebook’s CEO and wife to give 99 pct of shares to their new foundation

company that were then worth $31 billion to Gates’ foundation in 2006, and at the time ranked as the largest single gift.

M

ark Zuckerberg will put 99 percent of his Facebook Inc shares, currently worth about $45 billion, into a new philanthropy project focusing on human potential and equality, he and his wife said Tuesday in a letter to their newborn daughter. The plan, which was posted on the Facebook founder and chief executive officer’s page, attracted more than 570,000 “likes,” including from singer Shakira, former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Melinda Gates, wife of Microsoft founder Bill Gates. The Gates and other high-profile billionaires such as Warren Buffett have set up foundations of their own to dedicate their massive fortunes to philanthropic endeavors.

Zuckerberg, 31, who will control the new initiative jointly with his wife, Priscilla Chan, while remaining in charge of the world’s largest online social network, said he would sell or give up to $1 billion in shares in each of the next three years. Zuckerberg will keep a controlling stake in Facebook, valued at $303 billion as of Tuesday’s close, for what the company called the “foreseeable future.” According to Facebook’s most recent proxy statement, Zuckerberg owned 4 million Class A shares and 422.3 million Class B shares, which have 10 times the voting power of A shares. Combined he held 54 percent of the voting power of the company’s shares. Zuckerberg said he plans to

remain CEO of Facebook for “many, many years to come.” Zuckerberg’s new project, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, is not his first in the world of philanthropy. When he was 26, he signed the Giving Pledge, which invites the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to commit to giving more than half of their wealth to philanthropy or charitable causes over their lifetime or in their will.“Mark and Priscilla are breaking the mold with this breathtaking commitment,” Buffett said on Facebook. “A combination of brains, passion and resources on this scale will change the lives of millions. On behalf of future generations, I thank them.” Buffett himself pledged shares of his Berkshire Hathaway Inc

A YOUNG PHILANTHROPIST Zuckerberg is relatively young to commit so much of his wealth. Microsoft Corp co-founder Gates was 45 in 2000, the year he and his wife founded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Buffett was 76 in 2006 when he committed to give away all of his Berkshire Hathaway stock to philanthropic organizations. About $350 billion is given away each year in the United States by charities, said Stacy Palmer, editor of the Chronicle of Philanthropy. She said Zuckerberg and his wife’s announcement was remarkable not just because of the size of the donation, but because of their ages.“Our lists of the top donors are usually dominated by people in their 70s or 80s,” she said. “This is a message to other young people who are deciding what to do with their great wealth.”In welcoming the birth of his first child on his Facebook page, Zuckerberg posted a photo of himself, his wife and their daughter, Maxima, nicknamed Max, along with a post entitled “A letter to our daughter.” In the 2,220-word letter, Zuckerberg and Chan, a pediatrician, touched on issues including health, education, Internet access and learning before announcing the Chan

Zuckerberg Initiative, which aims to “advance human potential and promote equality.” They plan to give away 99 percent of their Facebook shares over their lifetimes to advance the initiative, which was formed as a limited liability company. It will begin by focusing on curing disease, Internet connectivity, community building and personalized learning - the idea that technology can help students learn at different paces. Maxima Chan Zuckerberg was born early last week — though Facebook did not specify her birth date — and weighed 7 lbs 8 ounces (3.4 kg) at birth. Last month, Zuckerberg announced he would take two months of paternity leave after the birth. Chan and Zuckerberg have so far committed $1.6 billion to their philanthropy. They have given several donations this year, including to public schools, initiatives to bring better wireless Internet access and to San Francisco General Hospital, where Chan works as a pediatrician. Zuckerberg and Chan said they will share more details when they return from their maternity and paternity leaves. Zuckerberg has started his leave, a Facebook representative said, and will be available if “absolutely needed.” Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer, and Mike Schroepfer, chief technology officer, will run the company in Zuckerberg’s absence.

Islamic State’s latest manifesto vows to expand war to India

T

he Islamic State has vowed to expand its fight to India, citing prophecies that refer to a global war. The threat is made in a new manifesto — Black Flags from the Islamic State — released online on jihadist platforms Tuesday. “The Islamic State would now expand beyond Iraq and Syria,” states the manifesto. “It would now expand into… India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan (and several other countries).”

In a first, the organisation also offers an analysis of the political situation in India. It notes that “a movement of Hindus is growing who kill Muslims who eat beef. The people who fund these organisations want to grow a huge following of Islam-haters who can turn into potential recruits for future wars in their countries”. It states that “President Narender Modi (sic) is a right-wing Hindu nationalist who worships

weapons and is preparing his people for a future war against Muslims”. “They have a political wing for the propaganda to get more recruits, and armed militia who can start a terror campaign against their number 1 enemy — the Muslims,” it states. Future Islamic State battles, it claims, “will rage in every country, and this is why there is (sic) over one-and-a-half billion Muslims in the world”. “They will fight the New

ith the Supreme Court agreeing to hear a public interest litigation seeking a ban on jokes lampooning the Sikh community, the issue is well and trhas come under the spotlight. Now, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has expressed his support for the ban, and has signed a petition on change.org opposing such jokes. Kejriwal signed a hard copy of the petition when it was circulated in a gurudwara, and said that people ‘should not be making jokes on religious and caste lines,’ The Hindu reported. Kejriwal expression

of support for the issue comes even as the Aam Aadmi Party is planning to contest elections in Punjab, The Hindu report notes. “While we are a fun loving community, and love our culture — the bhangra, the language — we DO NOT like it when ‘12 baje jokes’ or ‘Santa Banta jokes’ are cracked at our expense,” the petition says, adding, “It is not about Sikhs not being able to take a joke, it’s about hurting our religious sentiments.” The petition was filed by RPS Kohli, a businessman from West Delhi. In article in The Times

December 2015 Edition (epaper)

of India, Kohli has said that bigotry ‘should not go unchallenged’ and that such humour is a form of physical, psychological and spiritual exploitation of the Sikh community. Kohi recalled an incident in which a group of Sikhs saved a group of drowning boys by tossing their turbans to them and questioned how the saviours would feel if the rescued persons were to say to them, “Sardar, baara baj gaye the kya?” A petition demanding that such jokes should be pulled down from websites has been filed by senior lawyer Harvinder Chowdhury. In an interview with Debobrat Ghosh of Firstpost, she said, “It’s high time that we came out strongly against the wrong portrayal of Sikhs through Santa Banta jokes. Many of the jokes are highly objectionable and have pornographic content.” Chowdhury has claimed that she was ridiculed in a courtroom even on the day that she filed her PIL before the Supreme Court bench.

World Order in every land and every place. The peak of this war against the New World Order will be the battle against al-Dajjal (the Antichrist),” it states. “You will be sucked into the New World Order if you stay in your comfort zone and accept submission to the oppressors, or you can emigrate and fight to defend your religion and your life,” it states. In the manifesto, the Islamic State describes its theory of

how insurgencies against regimes can be developed, and gives supporters detailed instructions on how to operate covert cells, build explosives, and maintain operational secrecy to defeat security service surveillance. The Islamic State’s strategy, the manifesto states, is to “do hit and run tactics and then go into hiding so (the world) can waste millions or billions of Euros on 100,000-plus police, investigators, and it can shut down its major cities and lose its money”. It claims that the shutdown after the Paris terror attack cost Belgium 53 million Euros per day. “For what,” it asks. “To hunt 20 people who have basic AK-47 rifles which cost a few thousand dollars maximum.” Future attacks, it states, “will make groups in the West attack Islam and Muslims in Europe, forcing Muslims in the West to pick up weapons and start a fight to defend themselves”. The key to building successful covert cells, it states, is recruiting individuals whose commitment can be vouched for, and not using electronic devices. Fugitive Paris attack mastermind Abdelhamid Abaaoud, it states, did not use phones or email to communicate with other members of the cell, which carried out the plot.

Can’t Free Rajiv Gandhi Killers Without Consulting Centre

T

amil Nadu cannot free Rajiv Gandhi’s killers without consulting the Centre, the Supreme Court A Constitutional bench said that the Tamil Nadu government has no power to release the convicts on its own as the case was investigated by the CBI or Central Bureau of Investigation. “In cases where the state tries a case, the state has powers to grant remission,” the court said. Last year, the Centre moved court after the Jayalalithaa government announced that it would release seven people convicted for the

former prime minister’s assassination in 1991 by a suicide bomber. It was seen as a populist move by the state in the months before the national election. For years, the case has been linked to Tamil sentiment and all regional parties in the state have campaigned for the convicts’ release. The seven people have spent over 20 years in jail. Three assassins Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan - were spared execution because of an exceptional delay in a decision on their mercy plea. Four others, including Murugan’s wife Nalini Sriharan, Robert Pious, Jayakumar and

Ravichandran are serving life terms. Nalini, who was earlier on death row, was granted mercy on the intervention of Rajiv Gandhi’s widow and Congress president Sonia Gandhi. The Tamil Nadu government had in August argued that a convict in Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, Gopal Vinayakram Godse, had been released in 1964 after being sentenced to a life term. Vinayakram Godse was the brother of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse.

Lucy Turnbull slated for Greater Sydney Commission planning role

T

he Turnbull family’s remarkable ascendancy to the apex of Australian political life appears set to continue with Lucy Turnbull favoured to be appointed head of the new agency charged with reshaping Sydney. Ms Turnbull, a former lord mayor of Sydney and the author of a book about the city, is firming as the frontrunner to oversee the Greater Sydney Commission, the superagency to manage planning across the city. If appointed chair, Ms Turnbull and her commissioners would have extraordinary powers to override local council planning controls and guide infrastructure spending. The position would dovetail with the determination of her husband, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, to use the power of the federal

government to improve Australian cities, and would be sure to raise questions about the two working together. But there is a strong view by some in NSW politics that Ms Turnbull’s relationship should not count against her candidacy from the job, for which her background and interests make her well qualified. The NSW cabinet has not signed off on any names for positions in the new organisation. And Ms Turnbull told Fairfax Media on Friday she had not been approached for the job. “If I was offered a role like that it would be a very great honour,” she said. “The Greater Sydney Commission has the great potential to be a transformational way of having a collaborative working model for state and local government which

December 2015 Edition (epaper)

has often not been the case in metropolitan Sydney,” said Ms Turnbull, who also chairs advocacy group the Committee for Sydney. Other names discussed as candidates for roles in the commission include the ubiquitous business executive and adviser David Gonski, sustainability consultant Heather Nesbitt, urban planner Sarah Hill and environment consultant Geoff Roberts. Explaining the legislation establishing the commission to Parliament last week, Planning Minister Rob Stokes credited Ms Turnbull’s 1999 book Sydney: Biography of a City for proposing a “Greater City Movement’’. “There should be a way of looking at this great city in its entirety rather than as a maze of fiefdoms, each with its own agenda and set of

priorities,” Ms Turnbull’s book said. NSW Labor has said it would support the commission, and Opposition Leader Luke Foley has proposed a better-resourced and more independent organisation than that proposed by the government. However, the commission nevertheless risks inflaming old tensions between developers and local activists and environmental lawyers. Concerns have already been raised about the quantum of powers invested in the new agency. Legislation introduced last week and not yet passed allows the commission to draw up local environment plans that could override council plans. And a surprise element included in the legislation could see a similar approach to planning rolled out across the entire state. The Planning Minister has the prerogative to divide NSW up into regions governed by similar ‘regional’ bodies – but much of the detail of how the plan would work outside Sydney is absent from the bill. That has critics accusing the government of making policy on the run. “It is outrageous that the government is ramming these changes though Parliament without proper public consultation,” said the chief executive of the Nature Conservation Council, Kate Smolski. “It will reduce the input people will have into how their communities can be developed, and concentrate power into the

hands of the minister and planning bureaucrats.” Greens MP David Shoebridge warned communities around the state could lost control over local bushland and the environment to Macquarie Street. “Every protection people thought they had, every bit of local order is all up for grabs,” Mr Shoebridge said. Mr Stokes said fears communities could lose out were “misleading” and said they would play a role in decision-making through the appointment of six district commissioners – appointments which would be determined by local councils. “The only person losing power in this bill is the Planning Minister,” he said. “Local environment plans will remain the key document for local planning and decision-making.” As well as an independent chairman who will report to the minister, other commissioners include an independent environment commissioner, economic and social commissioners and the six district commissioners nominated by councils. The chief executive of development lobby the Urban Development Institute of Australia, Stephen Albin, said this week the commission would “change the way our city will be shaped”. “I think you’ll find … they will start really getting involved and forcing the hand of local governments and other stakeholders in areas to ensure we get development.”

National anthem evokes sense of respect: Farhan Akhtar

A

ctor Farhan Akhtar today shared his thoughts on standing up in attention while the national anthem is being played. Talking about himself and how he would respond when he hears our national anthem being played, Farhan said, “Personally if I hear the national anthem being played, I will stand because it evokes a certain respect in me.” The ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ actor, however, refused to pass his opinion on the recent episode where a family was

forced to leave a multiplex for not standing while the national anthem was being played. “There is a Supreme Court ruling as to what a person should do when the national anthem is being played. It is up to each individual to decide whether they want to follow or not follow the ruling. Supreme Court is supreme court and their judgement is there for anyone to follow or challenge if they want to,” said Farhan.

Shah Rukh on intolerance and Aamir Khan

S

hah Rukh Khan weighed in on the debate surrounding rising incidents of intolerance in India and fellow actor Aamir Khan’s recent statement on the issue. Speaking to CNN-IBN, Shah Rukh said, “You don’t have to prove your patriotism in any other way, except for thinking good for the country and doing good. You have to work for the benefit of the country. f I work for the country in the most kindest way in what I am good at, my country is going to benefit from that. But if I am corrupt, and regional about it, I will be harming my country.” This was Shah Rukh’s first reaction to Aamir’s statement where he had said that he was “alarmed” by a number of incidents and his wife Kiran Rao even suggested that they should probably leave the country. AFP image. AFP image. At a time when social media reach is baffling and almost unaccountable for, users chip in with quick and easy judgment. Shah Rukh echoed the concern and said that nothing less can be expected from such a medium. “Twitter and social media is about free voice, people do take very radical steps, they get abusive. Even a generic statement can be turned into radical statements by people,” he said. Shah Rukh added that social media should not be taken very seriously and a few things need to be ignored. “I have never been disappointed. It is not a medium to have a deep conversation,” said Shah Rukh with a smile, “Since people take a very radical stand sometimes and start jump-

ing the gun and at the end when you dont know what to say, you resort to teri **ki, etc.” Adding that just because an actor has been in the industry for 25 years, he does not have to speak on all issues, the actor said, “You realise even a generic, logical thing can be turned around into a radical statement. I think I should only speak on matters to do with my work.”

Speaking at the Ramnath Goenka Awards event last week, Aamir had said, “When I chat with Kiran at home, she says ‘Should we move out of India?’ That’s a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make. She fears for her child. She fears about what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers every day. That does indicate that there is this sense of growing dis-

quiet, there is growing despondency apart from alarm. You feel why this is happening, you feel low. That sense does exist in me.” However, after two days, the actor clarified that neither he nor his wife Kiran, have any intention of leaving the country as he is proud to be an Indian, and stand by everything that he said in the interview.

The Heyy Babyy director said getting good writers on board for the film was difficult as most of them are really busy. “The biggest difficulty in film industry today is not that of getting dates, actors or finance, but writers. Of how many writers have written the film, Sajid said, “I’ve got three writers, one of them is Hussain Dalal who wrote Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and 2 States.” However, Sajid did not divulge any further details regarding the movie. But there are many who can see but not hear and some who can hear but not see, they all should go and enjoy and should be provided with the necessary facilities.” During a question-answer session, Kabir Khan said that while he was making “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”, he never thought of focusing on the issue of differently-abled people, but in the whole film, everyone treated Munni like a normal

ctor Ranveer Singh said that he decided to go bald because he wanted to look like Bajirao in his upcoming film Bajirao Mastani. “I LEFT MY FAMILY, FRIENDS AND PHONE FOR ABOUT 21 DAYS AND CONFINED MYSELF TO THE ROOM OF A HOTEL IN JUHU. I COMPLETELY IMMERSED MYSELF IN THE ROLE. WHEN I CAME OUT OF THE HOTEL, I WAS BUBBLING WITH ENTHUSIASM. THERE WAS A COMPLETELY CHANGED BAJIRAO IN ME,” SAID RANVEER SINGH “I had the option of using an artificial head cover like other co-stars in the film. But that was not a practical solution because it required more than an hour to apply before shooting and another hour to remove it. I decided to go bald because I

wanted to look like Bajirao,” said Ranveer. “I thought it would be better to go bald. After tonsuring, I had the biggest satisfaction of living up to the expectation of the role, since I knew that it will not affect my other films as Bajirao continued for the next one and a half year,” added Ranveer. Bajirao Mastani casts Ranveer as the Maratha leader Peshwa Bajirao I, Deepika Padukone as his warrior queen Mastani and Priyanka Chopra as his first wife Kashibai. “I left my family, friends and phone for about 21 days and confined myself to the room of a hotel in Juhu. I completely immersed myself in the role. When I came out of the hotel, I was bubbling with enthusiasm. There was a completely changed Bajirao in me,” added Ranveer.

Music Review :

he album opener Deewani Mastani is a classic! While Bhansali gives the Marathi touch with the opening folksy rendition (lyrics and vocals by Ganesh Chandanshive), this Siddharth-Garima written song segues into a romantic number with Shreya Ghoshal taking over the mike and giving a soulful and beautiful rendition. The song ends with a qawalli (lyrics by Nasir Faraaz) bit by Mujtaba Aziz Naza, Shahdab Faridi, Altmash Faridi and Farhan Sabri (probably to emphasise Mastani’s Muslim lineage). Though the singers, especially Shreya, have given a wonderful performance, it is the DirectorComposer who manages to stand out with his composition with his masterstroke of bringing in three diverse genres in a single number and making it work! Go for this one, you will not regret it! Aayat tests the versatility of the flavor of the season, Arijit Singh and he comes up trumps! The opening classical humming had me hooked and Arijit progresses seemingly effortlessly in the same vein delivering the layered lyrics like a seasoned performer and totally bowls you over. Bhansali again surprises us with the SemiClassical-Ghazal-Qawalli (qawalli

voiced by Mujtaba Aziz Naza, Shahdab Faridi, Altamash Faridi and Farhan Sabri and written by Nasir Faraaz) combination which seems complex at first glance but then the master delivers and how! Compared with the first two tracks, Prashant Ingole written Malhari falls short. For one, the song sounds out of place for the era in which the film is set with its contemporary sounds and the throaty high-pitched singing by Composer-Singer Vishal Dadlani. Of course, the song has a celebratory mood and a powerhouse singer was the need of the hour and therefore Dadlani fit in perfectly. Having said that, the track sounds situational and therefore should hopefully have a better visual impact. Shreya Ghoshal’s sugary sweet vocals waft over your senses in the Kathak number, Mohe Rang Do Lal. Bhansali, who was the first director to give a chance to Shreya in Devdas (2002), yet again gives the opportunity to the singer to showcase her versatility in this classical number which also features Pandit Birju Maharaj while Siddharth-Garima create poetical magic with the written word. Together they create a musical fairy tale making this song a must-

have in your playlist especially if you are a connoisseur of classical music. That he is quite partial to the classic 1970 Ustad Khan number Albela Sajan becomes quite evident with the Director giving his own twist to the evergreen number in this film despite having done the same in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam albeit with the help of Ismail Darbar. While the HDDCS track was more soft, this one is sprightlier and

much more cheerful and also not to mention the number of singers that have come together to deliver this track (Shashi Suman, Kunal Pandit, Prithvi Gandharva, Kanika Joshi, Geetikka Manjrekar and Rashi Ragga)! Bhansali delivers well with the arrangement as well as with the mood and setting of the track but it is also to be said that if it comes to a choice, I will stick to the HDDCS version any day! The mood shifts to a more poignant one with Ab Tohe Jane

Na Doongi which is a bit surprising since this is essentially a romantic number! But to their credit, both the lyricist A.M. Turaz and the composer Bhansali recreate the old world romance (Peshwa Style!) quite well and are well supported by the singers (Payal Dev and Shreyas Puranik). But all said and done, the song despite its soft and sweet melody does not manage to make an impact and loses steam midway.

acebook is evaluating the possibility of investing T$10 billion ($300 million) to build its first data centre in the Asia-Pacific region in Taiwan, joining Google, an official said on Wednesday. The centre would require 6 acres (2.43 hectares) of land, with the possibility to expand to 20 acres in the future, according to Magistrate Wei Ming-ku of Changhua County in central Taiwan. “We’ve made all-out efforts to ensure sufficient supply of water and electricity … We hope they will come,” Wei said. Facebook, the world’s largest online social media network, said no decision had been made. “As a global company working to connect billions of people around the world, we are always evaluating potential sites for new data centres, but we don’t have anything to announce at this time,” a Facebook spokeswoman said in an email. It would be Facebook’s first data centre in Asia, following four others in the United States and one in Sweden, Taiwanese media reported.

New camera can measure greenhouse gases

R

esearchers have developed a new camera that can photograph and film methane in the air. It can be an important part of the efforts to measure and monitor greenhouse gases, according to researchers from Linkoping University and Stockholm University in Sweden. “The camera is very sensitive, which means that the methane is both visible and measurable close to ground level, with much higher resolution than previously. Being able to measure on a small scale is crucial,” said study leader Magnus Galfalk from Linkoping University. The advanced hyperspectral infrared camera weighs 35 kilos and measures 50x45x25 centimetres. It is optimised to measure the same radiation that methane

absorbs and which makes methane such a powerful greenhouse gas. The camera can be used to measure emissions from many environments including sewage sludge deposits, combustion processes, animal husbandry and lakes. For each pixel in the image the camera records a high-resolution spectrum, which makes it possible to quantify the methane separately from the other gases. “This gives us new possibilities for mapping and monitoring methane sources and sinks, and it will help us understand how methane emissions are regulated and how we can reduce emissions,” said principal investigator David Bastviken from Linkoping University.

handigarh is a place to see India as it would like to be seen – prosperous, comfortable and cosmopolitan. Officially a Union Territory controlled by the central government, Chandigarh is the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana. It is also the first planned city of independent India. When the Swiss architect Le Corbusier was commissioned in 1950, he conceived a people-oriented city of sweeping boulevards, lakes and gardens and grand civic buildings, executed in his favourite material, reinforced concrete. So Chandigarh came into being; turn the clocks forward 60 years and the parks, monuments and civic squares are still here, albeit aged somewhat. Each sector of the city

is self-contained and pedestrian-friendly. Most visitors concentrate their attention on Sector 17 (for shops and restaurants) and Sector 22 (for hotels).

Famous Places and Places to visit Chandigarh has various visitor attractions including theme gardens within the city. Some notable sites are:

How to Get There Road The 8-lane national highway 21 road passing through Chandigarh. Chandigarh has the largest number of vehicles per capita in India. Wide, well maintained roads and parking spaces all over the city ease local transport.

Sukhna Lake

Rock Garden

The Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) operates public transport buses from its Inter State Bus Terminals (ISBT) in Sectors 17 and 43 of the city.

Chandigarh has scheduled commercial flights to major cities of India including Delhi, Mumbai, Indore, Jaipur, Bangalore and Srinagar. Flights are available to Kullu-Manali also with Himalayan Bulls. A new international terminal has been constructed on the same runway in Chandigarh and portions of Ajitgarh. International flights were initially scheduled to ply from March 2015, however due to delays, the same will ply from October 2015.

Olympic about country, not individual: Sushil Kumar

N

arrsingh Yadav’s bronze-winning performance at the Las Vegas World Championship in September this year led to speculations in the wrestling fraternity as he earned a Rio Olympics quota place in twotime Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar’s weight category (75kg). However, Sushil himself is clear that Olympics is about representing the country and not about an individual. “Narsingh did a splendid job at the World Championship and I have congratulated him for his achievement. Who goes to Rio is federation’s call but Olympics is about representing your country and not about an individual. So, the best man should be selected be it me or Narsingh,” Sushil said on the sidelines of

an event. Sushil, who has been out of action due to a shoulder injury since his silver-winning performance at the 2012 London Olympics, underwent 20-day training in Georgia and is confident of returning to form. “I am training really hard for the Olympics. I have every one’s blessings and that motivates me to come back stronger every time. Given our record at international tournaments, everyone has hopes of good performance from wrestling. I have just returned from Georgia where I trained with their best grapplers and European champions. They helped me a lot,” Sushil, whose right hand wrist was strapped, said.

FIFA sponsors want independent oversight of reform process

L

eading sponsors of football`s world governing body have demanded independent oversight of FIFA`s reform process in an open letter published on Tuesday ahead of a key meeting to finalise proposed reforms at the scandal-plagued organisation. FIFA`s reform committee chairman Francois Carrard will put its recommendations to the executive committee on Wednesday and Thursday and they will be publicly presented afterwards. Last month the reform committee published its “preliminary recommendations” which suggested an age limit of 74 for all leading officials, but only mentioned termlimits for the president, who would be restricted to three mandates. The final list of proposed reforms will be put to FIFA`s 209 member associations at an emergency Congress in February. FIFA is facing unprecedented

pressure to overhaul its governance and improve transparency following the May indictment by U.S. authorities of 14 football officials and sports marketing executives on corruption-related charges. “We are aware of the positive work that the reform committee has been doing on governance reform but we still believe any reforms should be subject to independent oversight,” the sponsors` letter, published on www. coca-colacompany.com, said. “It has also become clear to us that such independent oversight needs to run long-term through the implementation and evolution of the reform process. “We encourage you to become champions of this independent oversight as it will only enhance FIFA’s credibility.” Domenico Scala, who heads FIFA`s audit and compliance committee, has produced an extensive package of proposed reforms that

he has made public and given to the executive committee. They include 12-year term limits for elected FIFA officials from the president down, full disclosure of the financial compensation of the president, general secretary and executive committee members, and more detailed integrity checks on members of committees.“Reforms can set the proper framework for these characteristics, but a cultural change is also needed,” the letter added. The sponsors` letter added: “We urge you (the executive committee members) to embrace positive changes and recognise that this is just one step towards creating a credible future for FIFA.” The companies also said transparency, accountability, respect for human rights, integrity, leadership and gender equality were crucial to the future of FIFA.“The culture change has to begin within FIFA and filter through to the Confederations and FIFA’s Football Associations.” The FIFA crisis escalated in October when its president Sepp Blatter and UEFA chief Michel Platini, who had been favourite to succeed him, were banned for 90 days by FIFA`s ethics committee pending a full investigation into a two million Swiss francs ($1.95 million) payment from FIFA to Platini in 2011.Swiss public prosecutors are also investigating alleged irregularities in decisions to award the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2022 tournament to Qatar, both taken at a vote in Zurich in Dec 2010.

It’s a special opportunity to lead India at my home: Kohli

December 2015 Edition (epaper)

I

t is a matter of pride for any cricketer to lead his side but it becomes a special homecoming when he gets to lead his country in front of his own people at the ground where it all started for him. India’s Test captain Virat Kohli must be going through a gamut of emotions as he gets ready to lead the national team for the first time at the Feroz Shah Kotla. The 27-year-old walked down the memory lane recollecting his first century in a trial match for an age-group team to scoring an ODI hundred at the venue. “My cricket started here with the state team. Played my first Ranji match here. Lot of special memories attached to this ground. It is a special opportunity for me to captain the Indian side at my home ground,” Kohli said when asked about his feeling of leading the side at Kotla. “This is the ground where everything fell in place for me. This is the ground where I scored a century in a trial game. All the selectors and administrators were watching and probably were impressed. That’s how I was drafted into the team after being rejected the earlier year. This ground literally

saw me start my career,” Kohli took a trip down memory lane. He spoke about his achievements on this ground. “Ranji Trophy debut was special day. Scored a lot of runs in IPL, in ODIs, I have got a

hundred and a 70-odd against West Indies. I really like the feel of the ground. I can relate to the ground. I like batting out there in the middle,” the skipper said.

Playing for the country is a big enough achievement but leading the side at home is something that no player can actually target, feels Kohli. “I did not imagine that this day will come in my life. When you

start as a cricketer, you dream to play for India. But captaincy is one thing that you can never target. Responsibility entrusted to me, I am lucky that I have captained at various levels. So I love it and enjoy it,” said Kohli.

16 Health Hormone supplements with estrogen linked to breast cancer

P

ost-menopausal women who use female hormone supplements containing estrogen and progestin (“combination” therapy) are at an increased risk for estrogen receptor positive breast cancer, says a new study. The study found that the overall increase in risk was 50 percent, with greater increases for recent and long-term users. Prior epidemiologic studies have been based largely in white women, which stated, use of combination therapy was associated with an increased risk of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer, the most commonly occurring breast cancer subtype, which is known to be sensitive to hormonal factors. Whether postmenopausal female hormone therapy has the same effects in black women has been unknown up to this point. Researchers from the Boston University in the US led an investigation of this association in data from the four large studies of black women. Two types of postmenopausal female hormone use, combination therapy and use of

estrogen alone were assessed in relation to risk of estrogen receptor positive and negative breast cancer. Similar to findings in white women, use of combination therapy was associated with increased risk of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer, with risk increasing as the duration increased. “The present findings establish that combination therapy in black women is associated with increased risk of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer, similar to the pattern in white women,” explained co-author Lynn Rosenberg from the Slone Epidemiology Centre in the US.The risk declined after cessation of use but was still somewhat elevated up to 10 years later. There was no increase in risk associated with use of estrogen alone, nor was there any increase in risk of estrogen receptor negative breast cancer associated with use of either combination therapy or estrogen alone. The study appeared in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute

hildren who are left without direct parental care for extended periods of time show larger gray matter volumes in the brain and may also show delay in brain development, according to a new study. The researchers wanted to study children who are left in the care of relatives for a period of more than six months without direct parental care. “Previous studies support the hypothesis that parental care can directly affect brain development in offspring. We looked at children who were left with relatives when the parents left to seek employment far from home,” said study author Yuan Xiao from the Sichuan University in China. MRI exams from 38 left-behind children (ages seven to 13) were compared to MRI exams from a control group of 30 children (ages seven to 14) living with their parents.

Asthma may lead to chronic migraine

The researchers then compared the gray matter volume between the two groups and measured the intelligence quotient (IQ) of each participant to assess cognitive function. They found larger gray matter volumes in multiple brain regions, especially in emotional brain circuitry, in the left-behind children compared to children living with their parents. “Our study provides the first empirical evidence showing that the lack of direct parental care alters the trajectory of brain development in leftbehind children,” Xiao stated. Since larger gray matter volume may reflect insufficient pruning and maturity of the brain, the negative correlation between the gray matter volume and IQ scores suggests that growing without parental care may delay brain development. The study was presented recently at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

ccording to researchers from the University of Cincinnati (UC) in the US, pre-existing asthma may be a strong predictor of future chronic migraine attacks in individuals experiencing occasional migraine headaches. “If you have asthma along with episodic or occasional migraine, then your headaches are more likely to evolve into a more disabling form known as chronic migraine,” said Author Vincent Martin from the UC. About 12 percent of the US population experiences migraine, which is almost three times more common in women than in men, according to Martin.“Migraine and asthma are disorders that involve inflammation and activation of smooth muscle either in blood vessels or in the airways,” said Richard Lipton, director of Montefiore Headache Centre. “Therefore, asthmarelated inflammation may lead to migraine progression,” Lipton added.

Specialized treatments available for: • Arthritis • Psoriasis • Erectile Dysfunction • Premature ejaculation • Impotency • Depression • Anxiety • Knee pain • Back pain/sciatica • UTI • PMS • Pregnancy care • Weight loss • Paralysis • Haemorrhoids • Fistula-In-Ano • & various ailments

A study was conducted of 4,500 individuals who experienced episodic migraine — or fewer than 15 headaches per month — in 2008. Study participants completed written questionnaires both in 2008 and 2009. Based on responses to the 2008 questionnaire, they were divided into two groups — one with episodic migraine and coexisting asthma and another with episodic migraine and no asthma. They were also asked about medication usage, depression and smoking status. There can be a possibility that patients with asthma may have an overactive parasympathetic nervous system that predisposes them to attacks of both migraine and asthma, Martin stated. It is also possible that asthma may not directly cause chronic migraine, but that a shared environmental or genetic factor, like air pollution, which can trigger both asthma and migraine attacks may be involved, he noted.

n Australia, Christmas comes in the towards the beginning of the summer holidays! Children have their summer holidays from mid December to early February, so some people might even be camping at Christmas. Because it's so hot at Christmas time in Australia, there are quite often massive bush fires across the country. Many volunteer bush fire fighters are involved in saving people and property and travel from all over Australia to help in other states. Australians hang wreaths on their front doors and sometimes go out Christmas carol singing on Christmas eve. People also decorate their houses and gardens with Christmas Trees and Christmas lights. Neighbors sometimes have little competitions to see who has got the best light display. The neighbors often visit each other to look at the light displays at night. Sometimes the displays are put out as early as December 1st. One street in Sydney raises over $(AUS)35,000 every year for charity with their co-ordinated street display! Australians also decorate their houses with bunches of 'Christmas Bush', a native Australian tree with small green leaves and cream coloured flowers. In summer the flowers turn a deep shiny red over a period of weeks (generally by the week of Christmas in Sydney). In each State capital city there is a large Carols by Candlelight service. Famous Australian singers like The Wiggles, John Farnham, Anthony Warlow, Colin Gery, Niki Webster and many more help to sing the carols. These carol services, held in different cities, are broadcast on TV across Australia. There are also huge Christmas pageants in each state capital city, that are also broadcast across the country. Most towns and cities have festivals and parades. In some places, there is a fireworks display at the local park. Many towns, cities and schools also hold their own Carols by Candlelight services, with local bands and choirs sometimes helping to perform the Christmas Carols and songs. As it is the middle of Summer in Australia at Christmas time, the words to the Carols about snow and the cold winter are sometimes changed to special Australian words! There are also some original Australian Carols. When he gets to Australia, Santa gives the reindeer a rest and uses kangaroos or 'six white boomers' (a popular Australian Christmas song!). He also changes his clothes for less 'hot' ones!On Boxing Day most people go and visit their friends and often have barbecues at the beach. A famous Yacht race from Sydney to Hobart in Tasmania is also held on Boxing Day. The Christmas story Long ago, about 2000 years, when King Herod ruled Judea (now part of Israel), God sent the angel Gabriel to a young women who lived in the northern town of Nazareth. The girl’s name was Mary and she was engaged to marry Joseph. The angel Gabriel said to Mary: ‘Peace be with you! God has blessed you and is pleased with you.’ Mary was very surprised by this and wondered what the angel meant. The angel said to her ‘Don’t be afraid, God has been very kind to you. You will become pregnant by the Holy Spirit and

give birth to a baby boy and you will call him Jesus. He will be God’s own Son and his kingdom will never end.’ Mary was very afraid but she trusted God. ‘Let it happen as God chooses.’ She replied to the angel. Gabriel also told Mary that her cousin, Elizabeth who everyone thought was too old to have children, would have a baby boy whom God had chosen to prepare the way for Jesus. Mary said goodbye to her family and friends and went to visit her cousin Elizabeth and her husband Zechariah. Elizabeth was very happy to see Mary. She knew that Mary had been chosen by God to be the mother of his Son. An angel had already told Zechariah that Elizabeth’s baby would prepare people to welcome Jesus. He was to be called John. Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then returned home to Nazareth. Joseph was worried when he found out that Mary was expecting a baby before their marriage had taken place. He wondered if he should put off the wedding altogether. Then an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said: ‘Don’t be afraid to have Mary as your wife.’ The angel explained that Mary had been chosen by God to be the mother of his Son and told Joseph that the baby would be named Jesus which means ‘Saviour’ because he would save people. When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel had told him to do and took Mary as his wife. At this time, the land where Mary and Joseph lived was part of the Roman Empire. The Roman Emperor Augustus wanted to have a list of all the people in the empire, to make sure they paid their taxes. He ordered everyone to return to the town where their families originally came from, and enter their names in a register (or census) there. Mary and Joseph travelled a long way (about 70 miles) from Nazareth to Bethlehem, because that is where Joseph’s family came from. Most people walked but some lucky people had a donkey to help carry the goods needed for the journey. Joseph and Mary travelled very slowly because Mary’s baby was due to be born soon. When they reached Bethlehem they had problems finding somewhere to stay. So many people had come to register their names in the census, that every house was full and every bed was taken in all of the guest rooms. The only place to stay that they could find was with the animals. People often kept animals in the house, especially at night, and used them like ‘central heating’! People normally slept on a raised/upper level with the animals below to give them extra warmth. So in the place where the animals slept, Mary gave birth to Jesus, the Son of God. In those days it was the custom to wrap newborn babies tightly in a long cloth called ‘swaddling clothes’. Jesus’ bed was the manger that the animals ate their hay from. In the hills and fields outside Bethlehem, shepherds looked after their sheep through the long night. As the new day began, suddenly an angel appeared before them and the glory of God shone around them. The shepherds were very, very scared, but the angel said, ‘Don’t be afraid. I have good news for you and everyone. Today in Bethlehem a Saviour has been born for you. You will find the baby lying in a manger.’. Then many more angels appeared, lighting up the sky. The shepherds heard them praising God singing: ‘Glory to God in highest, and peace to everyone on earth.’ When

the angels had gone the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem to see what has happened.’ So the shepherds went to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph. The baby Jesus was lying in a manger as they had been told. When they saw him, they told everyone what the angel had said and everyone who heard the story were astonished. Then the shepherds returned to their sheep, praising God for sending his Son to be their Saviour. When Jesus was born, a brand new bright star appeared in sky. Some Wise Men in faraway countries saw the star and guessed what it meant. They were very clever men that studied the stars and had read in very old writings that a new star would appear when a great king was born. They set out to find the new king and bring him gifts. The Wise Men followed the star towards the country of Judea and when they got to the capital called Jerusalem they began to ask people: ‘Where is the child who is born to be king of the Jews?’ Herod, the king of Judea, heard this and it made him very angry to think that someone might be going to take his place as king. Herod sent for the Wise Men to come to him. He told them to go on following the star until they had found the baby king. He said: ‘When you have found him, let me know where he is, so that I can go and worship him.’. But Herod did not tell them that he really had an evil plan in mind to kill the new king. The Wise Men followed the star towards Bethlehem (where it said that the king would be born in the old writings). It seemed to stop and shine directly down upon the place where Jesus was. The Wise Men entered the house where they now lived and found Jesus with Mary, they bowed down and worshipped him. The Wise Men spread the the gifts they had brought before Jesus. The gifts were gold, frankincense and myrrh. The Wise Men were warned in a dream, by God, not to go back to Herod. So they returned home to their countries in the East by a different way. When the Wise Men had gone, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream. ‘Get up,’ the angel said, ‘take Jesus and Mary and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for Jesus to kill him.’ So Joseph got up, took Jesus and Mary during the night they left for Egypt, where he stayed until Herod died. When Herod realized that he had been tricked by the Wise Men, he was furious and he gave orders to kill all the boys aged two or younger in Bethlehem and the surrounding area. This was to try and kill the new King, as his plan to find the location of the new king from the Wise Men had failed. After Herod had died, Joseph had another dream in which an angel appeared to him. The angel said, ‘Get up, take Jesus and Mary and go back to Israel, for those who were trying kill Jesus are dead.’ So Joseph got up, took Jesus and Mary and they went back to Israel. But when he heard that Herod’s son was now king of Judea, he was afraid to go there. So instead they went to Galilee, and lived in their old town of Nazareth.
