fternearlyayearofrestrictions placed onparents, schools have finally re-opened.Parentscan droplittleones offtoYear 1, theycanattendsportingevents, andcan supporttheschoolsinvariouswaysthrough engaginginfundraisingand thelike.
Parents, carersandguardiansare importantstakeholderstoschools, and schools need toclarify the rules or conditions ofengagementwith themparticularlywithrespecttoacademic matters.Currently I heartoo oftenthat parentsare nottrusted, theyareclassified as "pushy", "helicopterparents", or"Tiger mums anddads"foraskinglegitimate questions aboutwhattheschool isdoingto support theirchild's learning.
Parents are, appropriately, thechild's foremost advocates.Thequestionis howto achievesuccessfuladvocacy orinclusion, withoutbeinglabelledornegatively construed?Toanswer this, startwithfacts.
Whoknowsthechildbest?
Parents, thosewhohave lovedand nurtured theirchild since birth, know more thananyone else about theirchild includinga hostofthings the school cannot know: whatthe fa1nily hasbeen through, therolesofbothparents, thecommunicationpatterns between parentsandchildrenandinteractionwith siblings. They alsoknowthechild's likes anddislikes, some oftheiranxietiesand theirpriorlearninghistory. Schools see snippetsand teachers maymake astute observations, buttheydonothave this wealth ofunderstandingaboutanychild, letalone 25 in aclass.
School-parentcom1nunications
Otherthanformalised, regular, predictable communications - such as tbeweekly enewsletter ortheSemesterreport, thereis generally very littledirectcommunkation thatschoolsprovideparentsabouttheir child orchild'slearning. Regularinformal communications betweenteachersand parentsdo occurin Primary School, butwitheachyearachild advances, communicationbecomesmore sparce and controlled.

Eachandevery parentand teacherhas said theywouldfeelanxious and stressed.Theytellme they expect thatthecommunicationwould bebecause theirchildisinjured orintrouble. l ask the teachershowthiscouldbeacceptable - thatnoparentyet(includingthosewho are educators) thinks that the callwouldbe directly aboutthechild'slearning. 24
Aparent ofaYear8boy told me recently thatherchildhadbeen called"average", "middle ofthe road" and "unremarkable" sinceYear2.Theparentsassumed this meant thathewasworkingtohisacademic potential. Alas, his academicpotential wasnotactuallyeven noticed. To me,all thisindicatedwashisteacherswerenot preparedtodoanythingtoraisebim. I askedthe parenthowitwas possiblefora childto remainaverage: if his performance inYear2was "average", surely his teachers hadplans tohelp himachievebeyondthis. Apparentlynot.Hesimplycontinued for 6yearswithoutanyexpectation from his teachersthathedomore, ordo better.
Afterbasicassessmentitwasclearthat thisboywas underachievinganddidnot knowit.Hehadneverthoughtto push himselfacademicallybecausehebadnever beenrequiredtodo it.
Whatlearningneedstocommunicate?
