Sharing Ananzac Moment

Ever since I was young, I was told stories by my grandparents and school teachers about those who sacrificed their lives for India's independence. Many years ago my family migrated toAustralia, and ever since then the Anzac Day parade has constantly reminded me of the similar Republic Day parades I used to watch as a child.

This year, along with six other leaders and the school band, I got to represent my school in theAnzac Day parade. Walking in between the tram tracks with the heavy weight of the school banner up against my arms; the smell of diesel from the vintage car infront of us, carrying veterans too frail to walk; watching the soldiers marching, proudly holding their military units banner; hearing the school band play 'Waltzing Matilda' for the cheering crowd; these images brought this memorable experience to life.

Throughout the march, many gleaming medalscaught my eye, making me realise just how real and strong theAnzac spirit is and will continue to be.

While the parade had everyone cheering, clapping, giggling and having a good time, the Shrine of Remembrance showed us the real reason why Anzac Day is important. The mood turnedsolemn as we marched up the stairs and read the words 'Let all men know this is holy ground, we will remember then' that are etched on to the stairs leading up to the eternal flame. Looking around I could see these words reminded everyone of the soldiers who went to Gallipoli and sacrificed their lives for their country.

Although the entire march was a great experience, the highlight of the day was just after we f nished paying our respects to the fallen heroes, when a soldier from WW2 came up to me and gave anAnzac penny minted in 1934 as a token of his gratitude. I felt humbled, clasped the penny in my hand and stood there for a moment in silence to pay my homage to the fallen.

Lest we forget.
