Tavis Smiley Reports: Too Important To Fail This program looks at the status of black teenage boys and examines what it will take to make certain these at-risk males are not dismissed as throw-away kids. The program captures how educators are making a difference for these boys—what teaching techniques work and how community outreach and mentorship can compensate for the lack of other personal and social resources.

Surviving the Tsunami: A NOVA Special Presentation Wednesday, September 28 at 10pm

Courtesy of NHK

The earthquake that hit the northern coast of Japan in March was the worst ever recorded in Japan. It generated an unprecedented tsunami, obliterating coastal villages and towns. Amazingly, amateur and professional photographers captured it all on video, including remarkable tales of human survival. Their stories provide lessons for how we should all act in the face of life-threatening disasters. Refugees comfort one another.

“Education, From the Capitol to the Classroom” As students across the state head back to school, WTIU wants to make our viewers aware of a new initiative called StateImpact Indiana. Indiana faces many challenges in education, the legislation that supports it, and continued declines in revenue. There is a need for increased news coverage on issues such as: • Public schools are funded increasingly less by local property tax and more with state income and sales taxes, meaning education finance is tied to an unpredictable economy. • The high dropout rate. How will it affect personal income, crime, and healthcare, as well as Indiana employers’ demand for an educated workforce? • The creation of privately-owned charter schools. How will the state balance individual freedom of choice with preserving funding for public schools? • What are the merits or pitfalls associated with outcome-based systems that link teacher compensation to student performance on tests and attendance? • The need for remediation. Many students entering college need remediation, costing Indiana $40 million a year. Even then, most students entering a two- or four-year degree program fail to graduate. StateImpact is a project of National Public Radio (NPR) who selected eight pilot states, including Indiana, to deploy new two-person teams of journalists to report on issues that affect the entire state. WFIU-FM is the lead station for StateImpact Indiana, which will focus on “Education, from the Capitol to the Classroom.” WFIU, along with the entire Indiana Public Media News team, will be working with a highly-trained team of NPR editors, producers, and interactive specialists. We have hired Ben Skirvin and Kyle Stokes, who will be creating an in-depth and far-reaching blog and online experience that will be updated almost daily. Additionally, Ben and Kyle will be producing three to five in-depth on-air features that will air on WFIU each month. These reporters will focus intensively on issues of critical importance to Indiana. The focus is on the impact of legislation on people, not parliamentary maneuvering. Information at the state level will yield valuable insights into patterns of government spending, regulation, performance, and demographic trends both Scan this QR regionally and nationally. code with your
