THIS MONTH’S HIGHLIGHTS POV – Portraits and Dreams Monday, September 7 at 10pm

Portraits and Dreams revisits photographs created by Kentucky schoolchildren in the 1970s and the place where the photos were made. The film is about the students, their work as visionary photographers, and the lives they have led since then, as well as the linkage of personal memory to the passage of time.

Harbor from the Holocaust Tuesday, September 8 at 10pm

Harbor from the Holocaust tells the story of nearly 20,000 Jewish refugees fleeing from Nazi-occupied Europe to the Chinese port city of Shanghai during World War II. Take a deeper look into the acculturation of a new society through an intimate look at survivors’ families, their shared recipes, and historical context for the resettlement of Jewish communities during the Holocaust. The program also explores the relationship of the refugees and their host city and the survivors who carried on the traditions that would have been consigned to oblivion.

Van der Valk on Masterpiece Sundays at 9pm, beginning September 13

Amsterdam—city of bikes, boats, and bodies. At least, that’s the way steely-eyed cop Piet Van der Valk sees his murder-infested beat. Marc Warren stars as the title character in Van der Valk, an all-new, three-part series based on Nicolas Freeling’s legendary crime thrillers. Co-starring are Maimie McCoy as Van der Valk’s right-hand woman, Lucienne Hassell; Luke Allen-Gale as the scruffy sergeant, Brad de Vries; and Elliot Barnes-Worrell as the squad’s brainy new guy, Job Cloovers.

Islands of Wonder

Wednesdays at 8pm, beginning September 16 This three-part series takes viewers on a journey to the most exotic, mysterious and remote islands on planet Earth: Madagascar, Borneo, and Hawaii. These isolated and iconic tropical islands are home to remarkable wildlife and human castaways found nowhere else on earth. The fragile islands also serve as a vital gauge for the planet’s health. Madagascar maintains the largest collection of unique animals while Borneo cradles more diversity of life than any other island. Hawaii was colonized by intrepid whales, carnivorous caterpillars, and albatross. 2 / wtiu.org

Great Performances – Now Hear This, Series 2

Throughout the series, Yoo meets and collaborates with world-renowned virtuosos, local musical heroes across many genres, artisan instrument makers, music historians, and other charismatic characters on his travels through Italy, France, Germany, Spain, and Morocco.

Art in the Twenty-First Century Fridays at 10pm, beginning September 18

In the Peabody Award-winning biennial series Art in the TwentyFirst Century, intimate footage allows the viewer to observe the artists at work and watch their process as they transform inspiration into art. Discover how British history and modern upheaval collide in the works of today’s London artists and witness the maturing of this unique contemporary-art hub. Viewers will also meet artists who call Beijing home.

Last Tango in Halifax – Season 4 Sundays at 8pm, beginning September 20

Beloved British series Last Tango in Halifax returns for its fourth and final season. The four-episode series reunites its multiaward-winning ensemble of Derik Jacobi, Anne Reid, Nicola Walker, Sarah Lancashire, and Timothy West. Last Tango in Halifax tells the story of love-struck Alan Buttershaw (Jacobi) and Celia Dawson (Reid), who rediscover their love for each other 60 years after they first met. In the show’s culminating season, Alan and Celia discover wedded bliss isn’t all it seems after seven years of marriage.

NOVA – How Writing Changed the World Wednesdays at 9pm, beginning September 23

Writing shaped civilization itself, from the trading of goods to tales of ancient goddesses and kings. Follow the evolution of the written word, from millennia-old carvings in an Egyptian turquoise mine to our modern-day alphabets. Just as handwritten records changed how societies work, the printing press transformed the spread of information, igniting the Industrial Revolution. How did technologies—from pen to paper to printing press—make it all possible?

New Animated STEM Series ‘Elinor Wonders Why’ Premieres September 7 Preschoolers and their families from coast-to-coast will take a trip to Animal Town this Labor Day with the premiere of the newest PBS KIDS series, Elinor Wonders Why. The animated show encourages children to follow their curiosity, ask questions, figure out the answers, and learn about the natural world around them using their science inquiry skills. The multiplatform series debuts on Monday, September 7, 2020, at 10:30am with a special one-hour premiere that kicks off a week of new episodes. Developed for children ages 3-5, Elinor Wonders Why centers on the adventures of Elinor and her pals, Ari, a funny and imaginative bat; and Olive, a perceptive and warm elephant. As young viewers explore Animal Town along with Elinor, Ari, and Olive, they will meet all kinds of interesting, funny, and quirky characters, each with a lesson to share about respecting others, the importance of diversity, caring for the environment and working together to solve problems. Elinor models the foundational practices of science inquiry and engineering design in each episode, using her amazing powers of observation and willingness to ask questions. When she encounters something she doesn’t understand, like why birds have feathers or how tiny ants build massive anthills, she perseveres until she figures it out. In discovering the answers, Elinor often learns something about nature’s ingenious inventions and how they can relate to aspects of our designed world, as well as what it takes to live in a community.

Ken Burns: The National Parks – 3pm Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature’s most spectacular locales—from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska—the series is filled with incidents and characters as gripping and fascinating as American history has to offer. Ken Burns: Country Music – 5pm Country Music chronicles the history of a uniquely American art form that rose from the experiences of remarkable people in distinctive regions of our nation. From southern Appalachia’s songs of struggle, heartbreak and faith to the rollicking western swing of Texas, from California honky tonks to Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, follow the evolution of country music over the course of the 20th century, as it eventually emerged to become America’s music. Ken Burns: The Civil War – 7pm Explore the most important conflict in our nation’s history. The war was fought in 10,000 places, more than 3 million Americans fought in it, and over 600,000 men—2 percent of the population—died in it. It saw the end of slavery and the downfall of a southern planter aristocracy.

The Choice 2020: Trump vs. Biden Tuesday, September 22 at 9pm the next four years. And as it has for every election since 1988, FRONTLINE’s acclaimed series The Choice will investigate the life stories of the two candidates: the roots of their drive to be president, the moments that shaped them, and the life method that has brought them to this point.

Every four years, FRONTLINE tells the dual biography of the two presidential candidates that will step back and look beyond the heated political rhetoric, taking measure of the two individuals and the events that have shaped their lives and values. In the midst of a historic pandemic, surging unemployment, and growing economic uncertainty, American voters will head to the polls this fall to decide whether President Donald Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden will lead the country for

As the coronavirus pandemic has further inflamed partisan divisions and fueled misinformation and distrust, The Choice 2020: Trump vs. Biden offers trustworthy journalism that tells the story of the two candidates through revealing interviews with those who know them best. From veteran filmmaker Michael Kirk, who has made four prior installments of The Choice, this two-hour special will prepare Americans not just to vote in the election, but to understand what drives the president who will be sworn in on January 20, 2021, to lead a country in crisis.
