MIRZA GHALIB: Theatrical & musical tribute

Texas Governor Greg Abbott, left, with festival organizer Arun Verma of Shri Sitaram Foundation, USA and Durga Agrawal, noted Indian community leader, addresses a huge gathering at Sugar Land’s Constellation Field on Saturday, Oct. 20. The festival showcased India’s ancient culture through various activities and presentations like Folk Dance Ensemble, historical plays, bridal fusion show, cuisines from different parts of India, and a parade comprising about 50 floats showcasing historical representations. U.S. Rep. Pete Olson was the grand marshal of the parade. Story on Page 13

On Sunday Nov. 4, 7 p. m, Indo-American Association will present a specially commissioned production, MIRZA GHALIBandaaz- e-bayaan aur at Stafford Centre (Cash Road). Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib (1797-1869), noble, poet, and wit of Mughal Delhi became something of a legend in his own lifetime. He was historically placed to witness the decline of one culture and rise of another and he reacted with writings that could sublimate all the pathos and pain in a most creative manner. Conceived, directed, and presented by Prithvi Theater regulars Salim Arif and Lubna Salim, the multi-media production MIRZA GHALIB creatively brings together Ghalib’s poetry, writings, letters, and interesting anecdotes of Ghalib’s life in a tribute to one of the greatest literary icons of the subcontinent. IAA’s MIRZA GHALIB is a tribute not only to the great poet, but also to the legendary singers who were instrumental in popularizing Ghalib among the masses. Artistically interwoven in Salim Arif and Lubna Salim narration and video footages, Dattaprasad Ranade and Anjali Marathe, two celebrated Ghazal singers and accompanying musicians soulfully render Ghalib ghazals as sung by legendary singers like K.L. Saigal, Iqbal Bano, Suraiya, Talat Mehmood, Habib Wali Mohammed, Mehdi Hassan, and Jagjit Singh. Tickets to MIRZA GHALIB are available online at iaahouston. com. Group discount of 20% is available on all tickets by calling 832.231.3086.

U.S. Rep. Pete Olson presents a Texas cowboy hat to Prime Minister Modi on his first U.S. visit in New York on 09/28/14

I’m proud to represent one of the most diverse congressional districts in America and value the contributions that add to the rich tapestry of our region. I routinely seek counsel of people from diverse backgrounds. Whether visiting BAPS, participating in Diwali, Holi or India Independence Day celebrations, speaking with minority-owned business leaders, or welcoming newly elected Prime Minister Modi to America, I work to understand the issues of all I’m honored to represent. I’ve traveled to India (twice) to develop trade partnerships, strengthen ties and promote free Democracies that value liberty like we do in the U.S. On the Energy and Commerce Committee I’m working to increase energy trade between the U.S. and India. It’s an honor to represent such a diverse district. PAID FOR BY PETE OLSON FOR CONGRESS

Community leaders in support of Sri Kulkarni. Voting is the bedrock of Democracy. It is a right fought for since the grand experiment of America first began over two hundred years ago. Voting is a right that wars and marches and lawsuits had to protect and expand throughout our nation’s history. Whether it’s with black thumbs, colored pebbles in jars, or ballot boxes, the idea that every human being has a right to have their opinion expressed in how they are governed is the heart of democracy. On Monday October 22nd until November 6th, we need you to express that right. We need you to vote. When I first started this campaign, I was advised to ignore the votes of immigrant communities. I was told by elected officials and consultants that don’t bother, they don’t vote. But after talking to so many of you, it was apparent that maybe our communities don’t vote because we never bothered. So we ran our campaign the hard way, the right way, by reaching out to people wherever they are and to listen and speak to them in whatever manner they would feel most comfortable with. We went to high schools to listen to young people. We went to temples, mosques, churches, and other places of worship to register voters and pray. We went to HOA meetings and block parties to engage neighbors and friends. We crisscrossed this district with the simple goal to meet and listen to every community regardless of partisanship, faith, ideology, or ethnicity. We are the second most diverse district in the country and it’s time we had a representative who engaged with all of us. Throughout my fourteen years in the Foreign Service, I was stationed all over the world from Taiwan and Russia to Iraq, Israel, and Jamaica. I have seen democracies fall and nation-states struggle, and although America remains a place of hope and optimism to others around the world, our light is faltering. America is strongest when all of its citizens participate and are engaged with government. When all of our voices rise together and speak. When all of us vote. Texas is one of the two lowest voter turnout states in America. Immigrant communities vote at lower levels than the national average. This year we need

to change that. So as we head into these next few days I’m asking you for your help. I’m asking you to call your friends, drive your neighbors to the polls, and push your family to vote. If you can volunteer or donate, please join us. America doesn’t have to be divisive. We don’t have to have leaders who spread fear and stir hate. We can vote and change that. We can choose leaders who inspire, who will ensure government is an advocate for the people not corporations, and who represent the best in all of us. So Vote. Early voting begins Monday, October 22nd. Vote early. If you don’t, expect calls from your friends and neighbors until you do because this election is too important for us not to. We are voting for affordable healthcare for our families; for safe, well-funded schools for our children; for an environment that is protected; for families to be re-united; for criminal justice reform; and for democracy itself. Together our votes can change our communities and our country. We can be the next great American story. We can bring reason, compassion, and decency to Congress and fight for true American values. The values of hope that drew so many of our parents and ancestors to these shores, of optimism that hard work and perseverance could lead to a better life for ourselves and our children, and of safety – because America has always been a nation of refugees and immigrants fleeing famine, war, and hate and seeking a better life. And so we must vote. It is our right, our civic duty, and our obligation to those who came before us and to one another. So vote. October 22nd early voting begins. You can vote at any early voting location in the county in which you are a resident. You need your driver’s license or passport as ID. You can find voting locations at mytexasvotes.org. Thank you for all your support. Now vote. -Sri Preston Kularni Democratic Nominee for U.S. Congress TX-22

Olson From Page 3 fully funding projects such as Clear Creek, which will help protect several thousand homes from future flooding and damage within our community. This funding will also be used to find new and innovative ways to make our community resilient from future natural disaster. I was also successful in authoring legislation to expedite Army Corps projects that are located in federally declared disaster areas, such as our community, to help ensure that we receive needed prioritization of government resources. We’ve had Republican control of the House, the Senate and the White House for the past two years and have already accomplished so much for our country. I know we can continue our momentum and accomplish even more for Texas and for America over the next two years. What are your policy positions on healthcare, gun control, climate change, and immigration? The American people deserve access to quality, affordable healthcare. The Democrats made false promises about Obamacare and we will do everything we can to fix that. The Republican healthcare solution will benefit all Americans and protect those who need healthcare coverage the most those with pre-existing conditions. We’ll also ensure children can stay on their parent’s healthcare plan until they are 26 and expand access to group coverage through associated health plans so people can get more affordable and comprehensive plans. Extremist Democrats, like my opponent, want complete government control of healthcare forcing nearly 676,000 residents in our district into government-run healthcare hurting our senior citizens as their healthcare would no longer be prioritized. I will never support single-payer healthcare. I was honored to serve for nearly ten years in the U.S. Navy defending our Constitution, our freedoms, and all of our guaranteed rights as Americans. Liberals are determined to strip law-abiding citizens of their 2nd Amendment rights. They believe only criminals want to own guns. They don’t realize that we own guns to spend quality time with our friends at the range or out hunting and to keep our families safe. Our Founding Fathers intended for Americans to keep and bear arms and I’m proud to support the decision they ingrained as part of the fabric of our country 241 years ago. We have laws in place to stop criminals from obtaining firearms. The courageous men and women in our law enforcement enforce these laws every single day keeping our communities safe. I will always work to ensure they have the funding and support they need from the federal government to protect our families and keep our communities safe. I’m also committed to helping those with mental health conditions get the help they need, provide them with counseling and guidance, and that’s why I helped develop and voted for the 21st Century Cures Act which provides necessary

funding for mental health services. Finally, we must protect our loved ones from being harmed by evil people by hardening targets like schools and entertainment venues. I’m a big supporter of clean water and air - after all, we’re neighbors and we’re all drinking from the same water source and breathing the same air. But I also believe we need to be pragmatic in our approach and not be frightened by the scare tactics of environmental extremists who are against any meaningful form of American energy production. If these extremists truly wanted us to be able to power American industry, cool our homes, and fuel America’s economy, they never would have so violently opposed the development of more American nuclear energy plants which have zero emissions while helping us meet the base load power for our manufacturing industry and brutally hot summers. Houston is the epicenter of energy production, and we’ve worked hard to improve air quality in our region. Our local industry has reduced ozone levels by 18% over the last decade. We can protect our environment and boost our economy by responsible practices, not senseless overregulation. Every year we allow more than one million people to legally immigrate to our country providing America with a wealth of knowledge and useful skills. I fully support legal immigration because I believe the diversity of thoughts and backgrounds is beneficial to America’s growth as a nation. With that being said, the federal government has the responsibility of ensuring drug smugglers, human traffickers and murderers aren’t entering our country, terrorizing our neighborhoods and harming our families. But for years Democrats have stood in the way of sensible immigration reform, whereas Republicans stand ready to fix a broken immigration system. It’s not just about simply letting an individual cross our border, it’s about keeping our country safe. Just this year I was proud to help pass a few bills that enhance border security through cracking down on border tunnel threats, protecting our drones and ensuring all Customs and Border Protection agents have the equipment they need, such as secure radios or other two-way communications devices. Are you in favor of continuing tax reform? America is once again known as the most competitive nation in the world with more than seven million job opportunities, the most energy being produced, and the best environment for economic growth in the world. Hardworking Americans across the country are reaping the benefits from the historic tax reform bill that the Republican-controlled House of Representatives introduced and passed a year ago. Small business owners are investing in their businesses and their employees. Families across the 22nd district are taking home an average of $3,158 more in pay. Our economy has gotten stronger and the unemployment rate is at its lowest in 49 years. I was proud to vote in favor of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act for the people of our

district. Democrats, including my opponent, want nothing more than to repeal this important reform that is empowering our nation, expanding our economy, and helping to create millions of job opportunities. Democrats want more control of our money so they can expand programs, expand job-killing regulations, and expand Washington bureaucracies. I am excited about the positive outcomes stemming from our tax reform, and I will not let Nancy Pelosi take away the so-called “crumbs” from the American people. Explain your position on India-U.S. relations and your friendship with the Indian American community. I’m proud to represent one of the most diverse congressional districts in America and greatly value the contributions the Indian American community makes in adding to the rich tapestry of our region. I prioritize my friendship with the Indian-American community by participating in Diwali, Holi or India Independence Day celebrations, speaking with minority-owned business leaders, and traveling to New York City to welcome newly elected Prime Minister Modi to America. I have traveled to India (twice), and across Asia to better develop trading partnerships, strengthen ties to our country and seek ways to further promote free Democracies around the world that value liberty and opportunity as much as we do in the United States. In Congress we’re blessed that India understands our mission as they are the largest democracy in the world. I’ve worked on the Energy and Commerce Committee to increase energy trade between the U.S. and India. This is important because it connects two world powers in a mutual friendship. It’s an honor to represent such a diverse district and have such a special friendship with the IndianAmerican community.

Kulkarni From Page 1 dollars. That’s not sustainable. A more reasonable tax policy would prioritize growth in small businesses and middle class jobs. If that sort of tax policy is on the table then I’m all for it, but that’s not what we got last year. You have made special outreach to Hindus and Muslims in your constituency. What are the issues or concerns these communities have and how will you address them? One of the greatest features of our district is its diversity, including our vibrant Hindu and Muslim communities. I’m running to represent all of Texas’s 22nd District. No matter their background. Are you a Bernie Sanders supporter? Back during the primary, I had people in my rallies that voted for Trump, Sanders, and Clinton. I have had conversations with voters all across this district with different political views. Beginning with labels -- like “Bernie supporter” or “Trump supporter,” or slogans like “abolish ICE” or “make America great again” -- prevents us from coming to common sense solutions. My campaign is not about party politics; it’s about core human values. Elsewhere in a campaign appeal to minority voters, Kulkarni wrote: When I first started this campaign, I was advised to ignore the votes of immigrant communities. But after talking to so many of you, it was apparent that maybe our communities don’t vote because we never bothered. Ekal Vidyalaya earns a record $5.5 million

The week October 6 -13, 2018 saw Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation hosting three fund-raising galas in USA and earned a record $5.5 million in pledges. This was in addition to the $7.5 million it had already realized through its annual 50+ fund-raising concerts across USA. On Oct. 6, Ekal-Houston, hosted a Gala where generous donors collectively gave $1.5 million. In a similar fashion, Ekal-Washington hosted a Gala in Bethesda, MD on October 12 and raised $1.1 million. In 2017, New York had successfully initiated a Gala for high net-worth philanthropic donors, and consequently all eyes were on the magnificent ‘Cipriani-Wall Street’ banquet Hall in New York as the grand finale of this gala-phase. where $3 million was raised. This crowning achievement pushed Ekal’s donation total for 2018 way beyond $10 million it had initially hoped for. At the NYC Ekal-Gala, the presence of John Sculley, for-

mer CEO of Apple & Pepsi and veteran film actor Anupam Kher as two key-note speakers was the highlight of the evening. Sandeep Chakravorty, Consul General of India was the Chief Guest of this event. Mohan Wanchoo’s opening remarks, after the national anthems of USA & India, set the tone for the evening. As the chairman of the Gala, he touched on aspirations of village folks and what could be done to bring them into the mainstream. Chirag Patel, as the co-chair of the event, emphasized urgency to transform villages so that India could tackle the challenges of the future. Ranjani Saigal’s presentation of ‘EKAL’ and real-life examples of the ecliptic rise of some of the Ekal alumnus made the first-timers to Ekal, including the keynote speakers, knowledgeable about the crucial aspects of the movement. John Sculley and Anupam Kher were brilliant as keynote

speakers. John Sculley commended the innovativeness of Indians and lauded Ekal’s dedication to bring changes in rural life by empowering women and boosting the self-esteem of rural people in general. Anupam Kher drew parallels between his life and the life of poor village-folks and elaborated how he overcame obstacles in his own life by believing in himself. Laminated letters of Ekalschool children on every table was soul-touching and immediately connected the attendees with the village-based children in India. On this occasion, Ekal India Team – Bajarang Bagra and Naresh Jain – was also felicitated. Honoring them, Mohan Wanchoo said,” we in USA only raise funds for rural folks but the real hard work is done by ‘Ekal-India’. The pledging process was focused on supporting a variety of projects in the fields of education, health and skill development. Inspired by a matching donation from the ‘Sarva Mangal Family Trust’ to

bring ‘tablets’ to Ekal schools, $150,000 was raised instantaneously so that it could turn into $300,000 and equip 600 schools with hand-held tablets. Chintu Patel, Co-Founder and CEO of Amneal Pharmaceuticals gave a passionate speech on the importance of supporting the eye initiative of Ekal which he personally promised to support in partnership with ‘Irada’, a foundation started by his family. As of this moment Ekal has 77,000 schools across India grooming 2 million children more than half of them girls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given Ekal a goal to establish 100,000 schools by 2022. The highest bid - $500,000 – came from an anonymous donor who wanted to support the expansion of the schools specifically to reach this target. With the overwhelming support Ekal witnessed in the Galas, it is very likely that Ekal will reach PM Modi’s target 100,000 schools by 2020, way ahead of time. This unprecedented support from patrons has also given

Ekal the confidence to revise and aggressively pursue its developmental agenda as 2018 saw the highest ever growth in Ekal’s 30-year history. New schools were opened in 18,000 villages. E-Shiksha - tutoring by ‘Tablets’ – was initiated in 180 schools, as a pilot project. For digital literacy, 10 ‘Ekalon-wheels’ mobile digital labs have been added. Each van can educate 5,000 youths, each year, in basic computer skills. Four ‘Gramotthan Centers’ that directly benefit 400,000 farmers (indirectly up to 4 million) have been planned along with ‘Satellite Skill Centers’. A first ‘Tele-Medicine’ project, with support from John Hopkins University was undertaken in Odisha to bring expert Medical advice to the doorsteps of remote villagers. As Bajrang Bagra, CEO of Ekal-India said, “the primary objective of this all-round integrated development is to give dignity and self-esteem to rural-tribal folks of India. For the first time, Ekal went ‘live’ on Facebook and Twitter for this event.

Puja Samithi of Greater Houston celebrates Durga Puja

By SANCHALI BASU Under the able leadership and guidance of Houston’s favorite priest Dr. Bishnupada Goswami, Puja Samithi of Greater Houston celebrated Durga Puja at the ISKCON temple grounds the weekend of Nov 19 to 21. The spiritual ambience and setting of the Puja this year created a divine atmosphere. The festivities started on Thursday with decorating the dais and the idol of Maa Durga. Friday’s puja included Chandipath, Maha Sashthi and Saptami Puja. Despite being a weekday, several participated in the afternoon pushpanjali, and enjoyed the Arati and Bhog Prasad lunch. The Sandhyarati was followed by an invocatory Devi Vandana by Salil Banerje and his team. The rest of the entertainment program featured local Bollywood singing talents, briefly interspersed by a mix of Bollywood dance numbers. The evening rain and cold dampened the spirits and attendance somewhat, but Atanu Das from Atlanta, with his mix of Bengali favorites and Hindi medleys, kept the audience engaged with his powerful singing. Saturday morning was glorious with a slight nip in the air to

start off Maha Ashtami. What set this Puja apart was the Kumari Puja that ensued a la Belur Math, where 4 young girls ranging from the ages of 5 to 8 were dressed up like the Goddess Durga and worshipped. After the regular pushpanjali and Bhog Prasad, one of the most important rituals of Durga Puja, the Sandhi Puja was performed. It is done at the exact juncture when Asthami ends and Navami begins, the exact time at which Devi Durga slayed the notorious demons Chando and Munda. An hour of children’s program was followed by extremely talented locals of the likes of Shreya Guhathakurta, with her melodious renditions of Rabindra Sangeet, and Rajneeta Bandopadhyay with her captivating semi classical music. Invited artist from Kolkata, Dr. Kaberi Sen was very impressive with her Odissi dance in honor of Ma Durga and Pallavi. The dynamic duo of Anjan Saha, sitarist and Amit Chatterjee on the tabla, artists from Kolkata, left the audience asking for more. Pandit Suman Ghosh delighted classical music lovers with his impeccable offerings of raga Bageshree and others. Such was the tone he set for the evening that the audience was ready to listen to him all night.

Sunday, Mahanavami celebrated Durga’s victory over Mahisasura with a Vedic style homa (fire oblation). Vijaya Dashami always brings about an air of sadness amongst Bengalis when Mother Durga leaves her father’s house and is believed to return to Mount Kailasha, her abode with Shiva. It begins with the joyful Sindoor Khela, where women smear vermillion on the idol’s forehead and feet, before smearing it on each other and offering sweets. Nabapatrika was then immersed to bid adieu to Ma Durga for a year. The evening’s entertainment was provided by local talented artists. Most of the meals were catered by Govinda’s, ISKCON’s own restaurant and were delicious. PSGH will be celebrating Kali Puja on November 3, at the same location. A ticketed entertainment program will feature Parnava Banerjee from Kolkata. Please visit www.houstonpujasamithi.org for further information. More than 10,000 people attend the Dussehra-Diwali festival

Sri Ravula in Maha Vishnu costume

A scene from the Ramayana Houston area community at large thronged the Constellation Field in Sugar Land to celebrate the annual Diwali festival, the festival of lights, on Oct. 20. As Texas Governor Greg Abbott joined the Indo-American community as the chief guest, representatives of the consulates of India, Indonesia, Brazil, Republic of China and Mexico attended the celebrations as well. This was the 7th annual Diwali Dussehra Festival organized by Shri Sita Ram Foundation, a non proďŹ t engaged in promoting Vedic culture and heritage of India. The Foundation also provides funds to support 30 nonproďŹ t organizations annually,oers a limited number of scholarships and assists disadvantaged people in the local community. Celebrations showcased different and unique aspects of India. The entire stadium was decorated inside and out with close to a million multicolored lights which was seen from a distance as people drove in. The entire concourse was decorated with garlands & owers to welcome guests in the spirit of “Athiti Devo Bhavaâ€?, which mean guests are to be seen as god. High school volunteers welcomed the visitors with folded hands saying “Namastheâ€?. A huge deity of Hindu God Ganesha known to be the remover of obstacles adorned the entrance. Attendees were treated with further visual delights as they walked in to see 70 beautifully decorated red satin draped shops glittering with lights adorning the entire concourse, selling traditional jewelry, clothing and sundry items briskly, and a food court oering cuisine from different parts of India. Children had a wonderful time with a variety of treats to engage their interest in e.g. free balloons, face painting, henna, playground, moon walks, petting zoo, pony rides, exploring ďŹ re engine and police cruiser. There were games such as shooting the demon with bow and arrow and demon shaped

piĂąatas ďŹ lled with candy, which the children delighted in breaking with a stick. Divine meet & Greet was arranged in the concourse wherein audience could interact with artists dressed up as historical characters. Both kids and parents enjoyed taking pictures with them. Beating of musical drums accompanied merriment and dancing by many. The Constellation ďŹ eld was a visual delight with eďŹƒgies of demons (to be consumed by ďŹ re later) on one hand; a beautiful temple of the prominent Hindu God ‘Ram’ decorated with 6 feet high elephants on either side in the center ďŹ eld; and a towering 25 feet high inatable replica of Hindu God, Hanuman on the other side. The huge concert style stage built on the second base of the stadium with large LED screens held everyone’s attention, where a number of stage performances continued from 5 p.m. onwards. Several children dressed up as inspirational characters from Indian history, enthusiastically participated in the costume contest. Houston’s best dance schools performed variety of dances in the spirit of Diwali Dussehra Theme. Mesmerizing performances such as Brides of India, 10 Vishnus, Egyptian Spiritual Dance by Tanoura dancer, Action packed Ram leela Yuddh Kand, Eight minute Ramayan Dance kept audience captivated. A helicopter rose petals shower to Coronate GOD Ram grandly concluded stage performances. The chief guest for the event was Texas Governor Gregg Abbott who ew in from Austin to celebrate Diwali with 10,000 plus attendees at Skeeter’s stadium. He fondly talked about his visit to India earlier this year, his meeting with Prime Minister Modi, and with Indian Industry leaders. He spoke about the growing friendship and trade between India and Texas and the similarities between Indian and Texan values. Abbott talked about values that Diwali stands for, i.e.

‘Victory of good over Evil’, ‘Knowledge over ignorance’, ‘light over darkness’ and ‘hope over despair’. The growing similarity of shared values such as education, entrepreneurship, economic advancement, and compassion will continue to bring the communities of India, Texas and Indian Americans closer to each other. Congressman Pete Olson was The Parade Marshal for the Dussehra Parade, the highlight of the evening for which audience patiently waited. Dussehra Parade lead by Olson holding the Indian ag was followed by community at large. Many Temples, Ismaili Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, local groups, cultural organizations, faith and service based organizations participated in the parade, representing unity in diversity. Floats from 45 different organizations depicted Indian culture, heritage and

scenes from Indian History. Wells Fargo stage coach majestically pulled by four horses followed by Jagganath Chariot by Orissa Culture Center concluded the spectacular parade. Priest from dierent temples in Houston together performed Maha Aarti, the ďŹ nal prayers to conclude the event; a ritual to worship, glorify and thank Lord Ram (God) for the celebrations and for the wellbeing of all living beings in the world. Thousands at the stadium switched on their phone ash lights while kids switched on their ďŹ nger lights given earlier and participated silently in Maha Aarti. The event concluded with the countdown for eďŹƒgy burning of the demons, followed by remarkable Diwali ďŹ reworks to celebrate the ‘Victory of Good over Evil’. The event not only featured people from various back-

grounds but also made everyone feel welcome. For example, Jessica Gonzalez from the Swami Dayanand Education Foundation noted “This is such a lively event, and although I am not Indian, I feel like I am a part of it.â€? Ranjit Singh of the Sikh National Center echoed this sentiment by saying “I have celebrated this event since I was a child, and this celebration does a great job of representing various cultures and religions.â€? When asked about their experience, another visitor said “The Dusherra Diwali mela was the most spectacular event I had ever attended. I have not seen something so big in India too. The maha-aarti was cherry on the cake, thousands of people doing Aarti together reminded me of Shri ganga river Aarti in Haridwar. This was my ďŹ rst time here and I’m bounded for a lifetime nowâ€?.

To mark the Navaratri festival and in keeping with the tradition, Sri Meenakshi Temple in Pearland organized an unusual display of dolls. The top tableau is the famous battlefield of Kurukshetra from the epic Mahabharat. The Pandavas and Kauravas are facing each other in the battlefield. Arjuna, perturbed by the ensuing battle where he would be killing his own kith and kin, vacillates and Lord Krishna through the Bhagavad Gita renders advice to Arjuna to get ready for the battle and do his “duty” with “non-attachment.” Each person has to fight his own battle of Kurukshetra. In the divine order of the universe and of the eternal relationship between the soul and God, the war must be won. The display at the bottom left depicts a typical Indian village as Mahatma Gandhi said “India’s soul lives in the villages.” The other display shows a typical south Indian Vaishnavite temple tradition of the deity in a procession carried by Garuda and also in a chariot. The doll exhibits were set up at the initiative of Dr. Padmini Ranganathan, who is currently chairing the board of Sri Meenakshi Temple Society.

NEWS SC to hear Sabarimala review petitions on Nov. 13

The Supreme Court on Tuesday fixed the date for hearing the review petitions against its September 28 majority judgment allowing women of all ages entry into the hill shrine at Sabarimala in Kerala, on November 13, 2018. On Monday. Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said the date would be fixed for a hearing on a mentioning made by the National Ayyappa Devotees Association. The court had declined to stay the judgment. It had also refused to hear them before it closed for Dussehra holidays on October 12. The petitions, including the one filed by Shylaja Vijayan, president of the National Ayyappa Devotees Association, argued that ‘reform’ does not mean rendering a religious practice out of existence on the basis of a PIL petition filed by “third parties” who do not believe in the Sabarimala deity. A Constitution Bench of the court, in the 4:1 majority judgment, upheld the 12-year-old PIL plea filed by the Indian Young Lawyers Association challenging the prohibition of women aged between 10 and 50 from undertaking the pilgrimage to the temple. The Bench found that a restriction on women solely based on her menstrual status was a smear on her individual dignity. It was like “treating women as the children of a lesser God is to blink at the Constitution.” It was

a “form of untouchability” abolished decades ago. The ban on women was derogatory to equal citizenship. The right to practise religion should yield to the right of dignity of women aged between 10 and 50. Nair Service Society’s plea The Nair Service Society, in its review petition, contended that the court should take judicial notice that an “overwhelmingly large section of women worshippers are supporting the custom of prohibiting entry of females between the age of 10 and 50 years at Sabarimala temple.” The lifting of the prohibition at the instance of third parties, in spite of opposition by a large section of women worshippers, is anomalous, the petition said. A review by Chetna Conscience of Women argued that a Pandora’s box would be opened if a constitution court began entertaining petitions that purely pertain to faith, customs, practices and beliefs. Meanwhile, a petition filed by the Akhila Bharatheeya Ayyappa Dharma Prachara Sabha asked the court to direct the Kerala government and the Travancore Devaswaom Board to bar “nonHindu” women from trekking up the hill to the temple. The Sabha, represented by advocate V. Usha Nandini, said action should be taken against “erring officials” from using the State machinery to create communal disharmony by promoting non-Hindu women to trek up the hill to the temple.
